Just a little bit of history......

Candles appeared in everyday life back in the Middle Ages. Only rich people possessed them, since their cost was very high. They were made from various materials– paper, papyrus, plants, fat. Later, American colonists came up with a technology for producing wax. Then some research and experiments were carried out, but everything was wrong. Until a group of chemists invented paraffin in the twentieth century. Since then, it has been the most common material for the manufacture of these products. The most common, but not the only one...

This article is suitable for beginners, people who just want to start making candles with their own hands. For experienced craftsmen This article will most likely not be of interest. First of all, I want to briefly tell you what candles are made of, what materials and substances are used to make them.

Type of candles

Wax– as the name implies, they are made entirely of beeswax; this group also includes church candles (long and thin), created for a certain ritual. When burning, you can hear a crackling sound. They are considered the most useful, because the material of nature itself is used for their production. They do not contain harmful impurities; there is even no need for dyes. Beeswax candles are yellowish in color and emit a pleasant aroma when burned. In addition, it is useful to light them for colds, to purify and disinfect the air. Recently, natural and environmentally friendly products have become very popular. wax candles. This is the same beeswax, only with an embossed honeycomb pattern. The melting point of wax is about 60 degrees. But the higher the quality of the wax, the higher the melting point. They can be stored for decades, and the quality will not suffer from this. In my opinion, such candles do not need decoration. The only negative is the high cost.

Paraffin– are made from a fairly cheap material – paraffin. This substance is a product of petroleum refining. Most commercially available candles are made from it. It is believed that they are much inferior to wax ones in terms of environmental friendliness. For their manufacture, only the highest quality and purified paraffin should be used. He has White color and does not have a pronounced odor. But, unfortunately, our industry neglects this and often sells us cheap paraffin mass. When burned, carcinogenic substances are released that poison our body. They burn much less time than wax ones. Most often, this type of candle is decorated and scented, which is why it is very popular. There are no limits to imagination in this matter.

Gel candles Mostly poured into transparent glass containers. They look very beautiful and modern, and the decorations for them are beads, shells, flowers, etc., which are added to the candle mass. The main advantage is the duration of combustion, transparency, and the absence of any unpleasant odors during combustion. They are completely safe for humans. When burned, the jelly-like mass completely evaporates, leaving a small residue that is easily washed off with water. Their duration of use is 4 times longer than that of a paraffin candle.

What form should I take to make a candle?

It can be different, depending on what size and shape you prefer. Transparent glass containers, tea cups, jars are also suitable for these purposes. baby food, boxes made of thick cardboard, plastic cups (for yogurt, cottage cheese, cookies, etc.), orange peel, aluminum molds (for tea candles)….

DIY wick for candles

You can buy it ready-made, take it from a finished candle if you are melting it, or make it yourself.

For this we need:

• balsa wood or bamboo sticks
• olive or sunflower oil
• scissors
• napkins

Cut the stick to the required length, place it in olive oil for 20 minutes. This will extend the burning time of the wick. Take them out and blot them with a paper towel.

And the second option for making a wick from cotton thread. We will need:

• cotton thread, you can take floss threads
• salt
• water
• borax

Cut several strips of cotton thread. In a glass of water, mix 1 tablespoon of salt and 3 tablespoons of borax. Place the threads there and leave them to soak for 12 hours. Next, let the threads dry completely.

Flavors

Essential oils are ideal as flavoring agents. As they evaporate, they saturate the air with notes of aroma that have a healing effect on our body. If desired, you can make a mixture of oils for a specific purpose, for example, for relaxation, stimulation, uplifting, air disinfection, etc. The more essential oils you add to the candle mass, the more intense the scent will be. Also, beeswax candles are best avoided. I do not accept synthetic liquid or dry flavors, only plant esters. But if you are not against using them, then pay attention to quality and naturalness. As they say, do no harm!

Combination of essential oils for a scented candle

Dyes

The next component for making candles is dyes. This is also an optional ingredient. You can easily do without it. An ordinary wax crayon for children can act as a dye. First, it should be ground into fine crumbs and added to the already melted candle mass. Liquid food coloring will not work as it is made from... water based. They can be replaced by oil paints or special ones intended for candle making.

How to make a candle with your own hands at home?

So, we have decided on the shape, dyes, flavors and the candle mass itself. It's time to make the product itself.

Let's repeat what we need:

1. paraffin or wax
2. form
3. flavorings (if needed)
4. dyes (if needed)
5. a saucepan with water and a metal container for melting the base in a water bath
6. wick
7. glue gun
8. wick support sticks

The first thing to do is place the wick in a container where we will pour wax or paraffin. Using a glue gun, glue it to the bottom of the jar and fix it with a wooden stick (pencil).

Melt the candle mixture in a water bath. As soon as it takes on a liquid form, you can add dyes and flavors.

Pour it into the mold. Let cool for several hours. Trim the wick as needed.

Decor

A huge amount of material can be used as decoration. Some of them are easy to prepare yourself. For example, dried citrus fruits are suitable for aroma candles: oranges, tangerines, grapefruit. To do this, cut them into slices, place baking paper on a baking sheet and place them in one layer. Set the oven to 60-70 degrees. It is at this temperature that the fruits will not be baked, but dried. When you notice that the preparations have taken on the appearance of dried fruit, you can take them out.

Another decorative option for candles is ribbons, lace and decorative threads. Since these are flammable materials, you need to be careful when handling them. It is better to tie it, attach it to the candlestick itself.

Cinnamon sticks, whole coffee beans, pine cones and shells are great for this purpose. The main thing is to show imagination and creativity. Concerning gel suppositories, there can be no restrictions at all.

How to make a wick?

The choice of wick is influenced by the size and shape of the future candle, the type of wax and dyes. If you are using a glass beaker, a wick on a metal stand will keep the bottom from overheating, preventing the fire from reaching the base. The diameter of the candle determines its thickness, which determines the size of the flame.

To make a wick yourself, you need to take threads from natural yarn or floss and soak them in a solution of 1 tablespoon of salt, 2 tablespoons of boric acid mixed with a glass of water. Soak the threads in the liquid for at least 12 hours. After drying, the cord can be crocheted or weaved together.

Variety of molds

There are many ways and options for making candles with your own hands. They differ not only in color and internal content, but also in the variety of shapes used in their manufacture. Craftswomen create products in orange peels, large shells, and hand-made cardboard structures.

Very interesting solution are candles in sand form. Thanks to sand, you can get any shape of the product. The girl creates the candles, photos of which are shown below, on the beach. Of course, you can repeat this process at home. To do this, take moistened sand and place it in a wide container. Next, we remember our childhood and making Easter cakes in the sandbox. We are fiddling with the sand, squeezing out various shapes in it. Then you need to fill the recesses with liquid wax, which is poured using a spoon. The wax flows slowly over the metal, which prevents the mold from being destroyed in the sand. We wait for the contents to cool, then take out the finished candle.

Clear gel candles

Transparent products look very impressive. Let's consider making candles at home using gel. To create them you need tannin, glycerin and gelatin. To prepare the mixture, you need to dilute gelatin in water and add glycerin in a ratio of 20:5:25. Then heat the mass in a water bath until transparent. At this time, mix tannin with glycerin 2:10 and also heat and add to the first composition. Continue heating until the mixture becomes transparent. Pre-prepare the molds for pouring the mass. They must be transparent and resistant to high temperatures. These can be glasses, glasses, wine glasses or tumblers. The shape can be decorated with shells or glass beads placed on the bottom. We take the wick and secure it to a pencil located across the hole of the glass. Do not lower the wick close to the candle decorations; raise it 1 cm. Fighting bubbles

Making candles at home using gel is marred by the formation of unwanted air bubbles. If the presence of air is not specifically designed to create the realism of a carbonated drink, then we will consider several ways to get rid of bubbles.

Air comes out of the gel faster when it is not frozen and is warm. Therefore, do not remove the gel from the steam bath until all the bubbles have come out. The warmer the composition, the faster it will be freed from air. If the candle has already been filled, hold it near a warm oven, in the sun, or wrap it in a warm scarf. Gently heat the glass itself in which the product is placed.

If, when creating decorative candles with your own hands, you use little things, such as shells, fill them initially with gel and let them harden. Then use them for decoration without removing the gel mixture.

Decorative candles with coffee beans

Above we looked at how to create a candle using gel. Next, we will describe an example made from wax with the addition of decor from natural materials. To make a casing from coffee beans, you need to prepare two molds of different sizes. The main thing is that the smaller shape must fit in the mold bigger size and provide a wide space between them. Geometrically, the shapes can be anything.

We insert one form into another and fill the gap in our case with coffee beans. If desired, you can place any decor, beads, shells, dried flowers. Then the space with the contents is filled with wax and set aside until dry. After some time, the mold inside should be removed and the wick placed in the empty area. Next fill inner space candle mass. The wax candle is ready!

Scented candles

In some cases, natural ingredients that emit aroma can be used to create a romantic mood. Such products are short-lived and can be used one time.

To create, take an orange and cut it in half. Remove the pulp with a spoon, being careful not to damage the skin, which will serve as a mold for the future candle. Decoratively cut off the edges of the peel, leaving cloves. We install the wick and fill the inside of both halves with colored wax. We are waiting for the wax to harden. A candle can be used. When heated with a flame, the skin will release aromatic substances and give the atmosphere a special coziness of warmth and romanticism.

Stearine is easily obtained from laundry soap. Grate the soap on a coarse grater or slice it with a knife. Place the shavings in a metal container, fill with water until the liquid covers them and send to melt in a water bath. When the soap has dissolved, remove it from the heat and add the vinegar. A thick mass will float to the surface, which needs to be collected with a spoon after cooling. This mass is stearin; it must be rinsed several times under water and wrapped in a clean cloth to remove excess moisture.

4. Fill the mold with the melted mass, wait until it hardens completely, then remove the candle by pulling the wick. If the candle is difficult to remove, immerse the mold in hot water.
5. You can decorate candles in different ways, for example, place dried flowers, blades of grass and seeds around the edges of the mold and then pour in the melted mass. To make a coffee candle, you need to pour a layer of coffee beans on the bottom of the mold, fill them with liquid candle material and put the beans on top again. Decorating the product with beads, rhinestones and shells is best done after it has hardened and been removed from the mold.
