DIY wallpaper glue made from flour. How to make wallpaper glue from flour and starch with your own hands. Paste or ready-made products from the store

In those times when construction market was not rich in suggestions, our parents and grandmothers found an independent way out of the situation in order to properly glue wallpaper or make beautiful crafts with your own hands. Still self-cooking wallpaper glue from available means remains relevant.

The name “paste” itself has German roots and denotes a composition based on starch, water and flour . These ingredients are natural, are always available and easy to use, and are quite safe for the health of others.

What kind of work might you need a paste for?

The use of paste is very wide. The most popular direction- This renovation work: from filling cracks in windows to wallpapering. High-quality paste, welded with my own hands, is in no way inferior to products sold in construction supermarkets, but in terms of price it is much cheaper. A high-quality paste will not leave stains on the walls and will stick even heavy non-woven wallpaper.

How to cook properly

Make your own paste best made from wholemeal flour, 2nd or 3rd grade. These flour grinds have a higher degree of viscosity than higher grade flours, there is more bran in its composition, and it glues much better. If you have difficulties finding wholemeal flour, you can use flour as an option general purpose. Ideally, you should use whole grain flour, the so-called wallpaper. As for the choice of what type of flour to cook from, it depends on the tone of the surface being processed: in relation to dark walls you can take rye, wheat is better used for light walls. If you adhere to these principles, you can avoid problems with the appearance of excess glue stains.

Correct consistency

Liquid composition used for light paper wallpaper, thick wallpaper is prepared for dense wallpaper made of non-woven or vinyl. The thicker the density, the more flour you need to add.

The ratio recipe for liquid paste is 1 liter of water and 100 g of flour. The thickest one requires making up to 400 g of flour for the same volume of water. These recommendations are indicative, the final composition depends on the quality of the ingredients.

You need to prepare the glue before using it.. A stale composition loses its adhesive qualities.

If the paste has thickened, you can dilute it very hot water, stirring constantly. But the quality of such diluted glue will be slightly lower than that of freshly prepared glue. If the fresh paste turns out to be too thick, you can dilute it with boiling water, but be sure to boil this mixture.

If the paste is too liquid, cool the hot mixture first up to 30-40 degrees Celsius, and only then add the flour component in the form of a liquid dough, after which the glue must be boiled. If you add dry flour instead of a liquid consistency, lumps may form.

How to store glue

Do not store the finished mixture for more than 10 days. When storing the mixture, it is better to cover it with a lid or film. If mold has formed, this composition is unsuitable for work. During storage, the adhesive properties decrease, so you should store the finished paste only as a last resort.

Light composition

To make the composition for simple work with your own hands, for example, gluing light wallpaper, the following proportion: for 1 liter of water 200 grams of flour. And you also need two containers: a larger one and a smaller one. In one small container, cook the flour to a liquid consistency, in a large container, dilute with water and boil.

For gluing heavy vinyl wallpaper

Cook the composition according to the previous recipe, but with flour weighing 400 grams.

Industrial glue does not always satisfy the consumer, and sometimes force majeure circumstances arise when something needs to be glued, but there is nothing suitable at home. Self-prepared adhesives will help out.

PVA glue at home - an affordable recipe

When there is an urgent need to glue parts together, but there is nothing at hand, you can make glue yourself. There are many recipes that reveal the secrets of their manufacture. Most do not require any special components; all are available and commercially available. By adhering to the recipe and technology, you can be confident in the quality of the ingredients. (PVA) is one of the most popular due to its versatility and wide range of consumption. It is used to join paper, cardboard, leather, wood, fabrics, glass, and porcelain. In everyday life, it has proven itself well as wallpaper glue and a composition for furniture repair. PVA is widely used in construction as an additive to increase adhesion, gluing linoleum and tiles.

It is quite possible to make PVA at home; of course, the glue will not fully meet the industrial recipe, but the characteristics of such a home-made composition are similar to those of a store-bought one. We buy ingredients: distilled water, gelatin used in photography, glycerin, wheat flour, ethanol. If we buy glycerin and alcohol at the pharmacy, then photo gelatin can only be found in specialized photography stores. Distilled water is sold in auto stores.

First, soak 5 grams of gelatin in a small amount of water for a day so that it swells well. Immediately before preparing the PVA, stir cold water 100 grams of flour until smooth and without lumps. Heat a liter of water in a water bath, gradually pouring in a solution of gelatin and flour. Stirring constantly, bring to a boil and turn off the heat. Add 4 grams of glycerin and 20 ml of alcohol, mix everything for 5-10 minutes to obtain a thick, homogeneous mass. Cooled PVA is ready for use. Despite its versatility, the capabilities of PVA are still limited to certain materials. But there are alternatives, including homemade, which we will discuss below.

Wallpaper paste made from flour - how to prepare it correctly?

The variety of wallpaper adhesives and their recipes are amazing. Each package indicates what the glue is made from. various types wallpaper It is unlikely that you will be able to prepare this at home, but there is a recipe for flour paste - old and proven over the years.

Preparing the paste is simple and quick: you need flour or starch and water. For two or three rolls of wallpaper, one liter is enough. For this amount we take 6 tablespoons of starch or flour. We put a liter of water on the fire, and until it boils, in a small volume cold water separate the flour. Stir thoroughly so that there are not the slightest lumps. The thickness of the mixture should resemble sour cream. Slowly pour it into boiling water, stirring constantly. Let it boil again and leave to cool.

The finished composition should resemble thick jelly in consistency. The use of paste for gluing walls with wallpaper ensures that they will adhere perfectly to a wall made of any material. It is also capable of joining any kind of paper and cardboard. The advantages are undeniable: very cheap, environmentally friendly. The quality of a properly prepared paste is superior to some industrial samples.

How to join wooden materials - a simple solution

Wood glue is traditionally used for gluing wood, which is considered the best for these purposes. It has some features that do not allow it to be stored for a long time. finished form. In a liquid state, after a short time it turns into gelatin and is covered with mold. The gelatinous mass can be stored for a longer time, from which pieces are cut off for subsequent preparation of casein glue. There are several cooking methods.

According to the first method, we grind the most common wood glue and soak it in water until it swells completely. Ready mix soft, reminiscent of jelly. We melt this mass in a water bath in a container called a glue bottle. If it is not there, we use any utensils, even tin can. The fire should be very low, make sure that the mass does not burn. Burnt glue turns yellow and is weaker than properly prepared glue.

Constantly stir the gelatinous mass with a wooden stick until it becomes liquid. Add vodka to this liquid at the rate of one liter per 760 grams. You will need powdered alum - 12 grams per 100 grams of glue. This recipe allows you to prepare the most durable wood glue with water-repellent properties.

It’s easier to make wood glue using the second method. In a glass bottle, bring wood glue to a boil in the same ratio with water. When the mixture begins to cool and becomes thicker, pour it into a porcelain mortar and grind with a pestle until the mass becomes gelatinous. Place the mixture on a plate, wait until it cools, and cut into smaller pieces. If necessary, dissolve the piece in water 1:1 and vodka, with which we take half the mass of the workpiece. Boil the mixture and cool.

Another easy way. We take equal parts of wood glue, 9% vinegar and vodka. First, boil the vinegar and glue in a water bath until the mixture is completely dissolved. Stirring constantly, add vodka. According to another recipe, we heat equal parts of glue and water in a water bath until the mixture becomes thick. Add glycerin equal in mass to the glue and continue heating until the water has completely evaporated. Dry the finished mixture and, if necessary, dilute it with water in equal proportions.

The possibilities of wood glue – did you know about it?

The capabilities of wood glue are not limited to just gluing wooden products, they are much wider. Based on it, you can prepare many adhesive compositions for various purposes. We will talk about syndeticone below, but for now let’s focus on other recipes.

It turns out that you can glue wood with metal, stone, glass with it, you just need to prepare the adhesive paste. Wood ash sift through a fine sieve and add to hot wood glue. To restore book bindings or create new ones, we also use wood glue to which we add glycerin (by weight, 1 part glycerin for 20 parts of glue). You can make waterproof glue by adding 1 part of natural drying oil to 4 parts of hot wood glue.

How to isolate casein from cottage cheese and milk?

This universal remedy for household repair work, they are used not only for joining wood to wood, but also in combination with other materials: cardboard, plastic, fabric, leather. It is also capable of firmly gluing earthenware, plastic, and foam. Correct work with this glue ensures that the connection will be strong and durable.

Casein is commercially available as a heavy white powder, and all you need to make glue from it is water. But you can isolate casein from ordinary cow’s milk at home. The method is little known, but interesting. In addition to milk, vinegar is used, which separates it into liquid and solid components. With the addition of soda, an alkaline environment is formed, which dissolves casein. You should be aware that the resulting product is not food grade.

To make casein glue, we perform simple operations with our own hands:

  1. 1. In any container ( better frying pan) heat the milk, but do not bring it to a boil. Add 9 teaspoons of vinegar per liter of hot milk and heat, stirring until lumps of curd and whey form.
  2. 2. Through a sieve, separate the solid part from the liquid and put it back on the frying pan. Add a little water and 3 tablespoons of soda, heat until bubbles appear on the surface.
  3. 3. Mix the mass well and leave to cool. It can be used as glue.

You can also isolate casein from cottage cheese by defatting it. To do this, soak it in an alkaline solution for 20 minutes. Prepare an alkaline solution from two spoons baking soda, dissolved in water. Then rinse the cottage cheese thoroughly running water, squeeze and dry. Once dry it will become hard. We prepare a powder from it, which is casein.

Prepare glue from dry casein powder. We measure required amount powder and twice as much water. Pour the powder into a bowl with flat bottom, add water little by little without stopping stirring. The quality of the desired product depends on the quality of mixing. You can use a regular mixer, the work will go faster, but by hand it will take at least half an hour. The result will be a thick mass that must be used immediately, otherwise in about two hours it will harden and become unusable.

How to create hot melt adhesive - nothing could be easier

Perhaps the best invention that allows you to stick everything to everything is hot or thermoplastic glue. It has one feature that fundamentally distinguishes it from its counterparts - it passes from solid to liquid and back without losing its qualities and without changing volume. Industrially produced as rods different colors. To use it, you will need special equipment - a heat gun.

Do hot glue at home you can use ordinary plastic bottle. To do this, we cut strips of the required length, twice as wide as the parts to be glued. We bend the strip in half along its length and place it on one of the surfaces to be glued. Will need construction hair dryer, which we use to heat the plastic. When it softens, apply another part and wait until it hardens completely. Cut off excess glue with a knife.

The advantage of homemade hot glue is that it can be reused. If gluing does not work the first time, heat up the joint and repeat the process. If the parts are connected by mistake, it’s okay: we heat up and separate the parts, remove the remaining glue. The parts glued in this way are held tightly. Industrial hot melt adhesive is disposable - only rods are used for the hot melt gun.

Homemade superglue - a universal assistant for the master

You can get glue with the characteristics of a universal one using carpentry glue. Take 400 ml of water and dissolve half a glass of sugar, mix in slaked lime - 30 grams. Heat for an hour, stirring all the time. We get a transparent solution, drain it and add 120 grams of wood glue, cut into pieces. We wait for the moment of complete swelling and cook as usual until a homogeneous substance is obtained.

You can make superglue using another recipe. Very affordable way, which does not require large expenditures - based on acetone. We use pieces of linoleum or plastic as filler. Place in small pieces in a container, which can then be tightly closed. Fill the raw material with double the amount of acetone, seal the container hermetically and place it in a dark place. We watch when everything dissolves and use it to join wood, metal, porcelain and other things.

Minor household repairs - using improvised means

Occasionally you have to glue things together that are made from rare materials, or repair something. Some tips will help you get out of this difficult situation. If you need to connect organic glass (plexiglass), we make an adhesive composition from it. We prepare a small amount of small plexiglass sawdust and fill the bottle with it. We dilute acetone and amyl acetate equally and fill the sawdust with this solvent. organic glass. Place in a warm place and wait for complete dissolution. If we use only acetone, the plexiglass will not completely dissolve, but the composition is suitable for work.

In everyday life there is often a need to glue glass, porcelain and earthenware products. Take liquid glass and dissolve casein in it - the repair agent is ready. For porcelain and earthenware, a gypsum solution based on egg whites is especially good. It thickens almost instantly, we work quickly and carefully. We are preparing another composition for earthenware and porcelain. Whisk the egg whites and place in the refrigerator for 24 hours. Separate the settled protein and thoroughly grind it with quicklime until a dough is obtained. Glue quickly, spreading with a thin layer.

Paste linoleum tiles You can use unusual instant glue. We crumble the foam and fill it with the place that needs to be glued. Spray the foam with acetone, which immediately begins to melt, and press the parts to be glued. This is a very convenient means for gluing soles. We push the foam balls into the place that needs repair, drip acetone and press.

To help your hobby - original ideas for adhesives

If you are interested in origami, paper appliqué, or quilling, then you undoubtedly know that the best glue for such activities is dextrin-based. It is not at all necessary to search for it in stores. Dextrin can be easily prepared at home from starch. Let's take it required quantity, pour into a heat-resistant container and place in a slightly heated electrical cabinet. Then we gradually increase the temperature until it reaches 160°. We maintain this temperature for an hour and a half, during which time the starch will be converted into dextrin.

Let's start making glue. You will need three tablespoons of dry dextrin, no more than five tablespoons of water and a spoonful of glycerin. Mix the dextrin powder with water and heat slightly until the dry substance is completely dissolved. Don't forget to stir constantly. TO ready-made composition add glycerin.

A popular hobby among women is making flowers from various fabrics. Flowers with petals glued to each other are especially elegant and spectacular. The simplest glue is made from three tablespoons of flour and a glass of water. To cook the glue, first dilute the wheat flour a small amount cold water, and then gradually pour into a glass of boiling water and bring to a boil.

According to the second method, mix thoroughly in a glass of water so that there are no lumps, add a tablespoon of wheat flour, starch and sugar and bring to a boil. Good glue for making fabric flowers, it is obtained from a gelatin packet. Soak the gelatin for 12 hours in a third of a glass of water. After the allotted time, stir gelatin, two tablespoons of flour, and one tablespoon of sugar into ⅔ glass of water. Bring to a boil, cool, store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Homemade baking with decorations in the form of various figures and flowers made from food mastic is not only a hobby, but also a small business. To ensure that the entire decor adheres securely to the surface of the baked goods and retains its shape, food grade glue is used. People buy it often without knowing that glue can be made at home. We use starch, from four tablespoons of which we cook jelly in a glass of water and keep it warm until it becomes thick and viscous. According to the second method, boil a glass of sugar in a glass of water. You should get a slightly undercooked toffee caramel, which is food glue.

Not a single renovation, whether in an apartment or a house, can be completed without glue. Today, the selection of adhesive mixtures in the store is very, very large. But their quality sometimes leaves much to be desired. Many builders make homemade glue at home directly from improvised materials. However, we note that in each case the composition of the glue may be different, because it may be suitable for different materials, for example one for paper and another for wood.

In this article, we will look at various homemade adhesive mixtures that can be easily prepared in simple home conditions, without spending a lot of money on its preparation. So, let's go!

Traditional flour paste recipe

This glue is used quite often in a variety of situations. Most often, they resort to its preparationin case of urgent need, for example, when the glue from the store runs out, while updating the wallpaper. Therefore, in order not to run to the store for a new pack (which, apparently, will only be used 1/3), it’s easier to make your own glue, which will be no worse. Plus, this glue is non-toxic and completely safe for use at home. The main component is flour, which is probably found in every home. The glue ratio is as follows - 1 liter of glue is enough for 2 or 3 rolls of wallpaper.

Prepare the following components:

A container in which the glue will be mixed;

6 tablespoons of flour per liter of water;

Water, according to the amount of flour (1 liter per 6 tablespoons).

You need to prepare the glue as follows:

1. Heat water until boiling;

2. In a separate container, stir the flour with cold water until a mixture forms, similar to liquid sour cream (and always without lumps);

3. Now, pour boiling water into this mixture in a thin stream, while constantly stirring it with a spoon;

4. After mixing, boil the resulting mixture again and leave it to cool.

The finished consistency should resemble thick jelly. In a similar way, you can prepare such glue using starch instead of flour, and it will not differ one bit from flour. In some cases, such glue can even prove to be much more effective than store-bought glue. If you are afraid to apply this glue to wallpaper, test it on small pieces of wallpaper, gluing them to each other. In general, this glue can be used on any wall surface, gluing paper to cardboard and other types of paper. In a word, experiment and see everything with your own eyes.

Homemade PVA glue

The second, no less popular and effective is homemade PVA glue. If you think that glue is made at a factory using some special technology, you are mistaken, because exactly the same glue can be made at home. Agree, this type of glue is one of the most common. It is used both inin the office sector and in the construction industry, that is, in essence it can be called a universal glue. Well, it’s time to move on to how to actually make it. To do this you will need:

1. Distilled water in a volume of 1 l;

2. Photographic gelatin (can be bought at any camera supply store) in an amount of 5 grams;

3. Pharmacy glycerin (4 grams is enough);

4. Wheat flour, about 100-150 grams;

5. Ethyl alcohol in a volume of 20 ml (can be bought at any pharmacy).

Conventionally, production can be divided into two stages:

This preliminary preparation, during which gelatin needs to be soaked in a glass of water;

And the cooking process itself.

So, a day after the gelatin swells, you can start making PVA.

∙ Place distilled water in a water bath in some container. Next, add gelatin to it, and stir with flour mixed in a small amount of water (again, without lumps);

∙ Bring the mixed consistency to a boil, but do not boil. Notice how the mixture becomes thick and white, like sour cream. Stir it until the glue is homogeneous and without clots.

∙ All that remains is to add glycerin and ethyl alcohol. Constantly stir and stir the mixture again to make it as thick as possible. Stirring time should be about 10 minutes, so don't think that two stirrings with a spoon will be enough. You can use the glue only after it has completely cooled.

How to make wood glue yourself?

This glue is ideal for wood. It also effectively glues paper and cardboard, other cellulose materials, and in some cases even plastic. However, this glue has a couple of disadvantages:

Firstly, it is not stored for too long in liquid form and is perishable;

And secondly, it just has a disgusting and pungent smell that you just have to put up with.

Partially, this problem disappears if you first boil it and make a gelatinous mass. Then, its validity period increases, and if necessary, you can cut off a piece of the required size, heat it over low heat, and use it. There are several recipes for making this glue. We will describe the most basic and accessible ones below.

Method one.Take regular wood glue. Grind it and soak in water until it swells completely. So, it will soften and become like jelly. In the same state, place it in a melting container called a glue bottle. The easiest way to make such a container is from an ordinary tin can (condensed milk or canned pineapples). Place the gelatinous mass in a jar and place it in a water bath (the heat should be very low). Stir the heated mass with a wooden spoon or a stick (for example, a sushi stick). You need to stir constantly, because if it burns, the mass will acquire a yellowish color, while losing its adhesive qualities. After the mass transfers to liquid state, dilute it with vodka with the following ratio: 720 grams of glue need 950 grams of vodka. Then, for every 100 grams of glue, add 12 g of powdered alum. The resulting homemade wood glue will have a high degree of adhesiveness and excellent water-repellent characteristics.

Method two.In the same glue bowl, mix wood glue and water with a ratio of 1 to 1. After the mixture begins to boil, it will thicken a little, and at this stage it needs to be poured into a ceramic mortar and ground with a pestle until a gelatinous mass is formed. Afterwards, put the glue on a plate, cool, and cut into the necessary pieces. If necessary, mix glue with vodka in a different ratio - 720 g (glue) / 360 g (vodka). Bring the mixture to a boil, then cool and use it.

Method three.Boil in a water bath a mixture consisting of one liter of water, a kilogram of wood glue, and one liter of 9 percent table vinegar. After stirring this mixture, gradually add a liter of vodka to it.

Method four. Dilute wood glue with water in a one to one ratio. Heat it in a water bath until the mixture thickens completely. Afterwards, add one part of glycerin (equal to the part of the glue that was taken initially). Place on low heat and wait until the water has completely evaporated. All that remains is to put it in a mold and dry the glue. Before using it, mix it with water in a 1 to 1 ratio.

Homemade foam glue

Recently, the need for such glue has become acute. This is due to the fact that cases of wall insulation, sound insulation, which require the use of foam plastic, and other materials similar to it, have become more frequent. You can also use glue from the store, but, as a rule, it is afraid of solvents like acetone. Therefore, you can use the wood glue given above.

Otherwise, you can make glue, especially for polystyrene foam, from homemade cottage cheese. To do this, you will need to mix slaked lime with homemade cottage cheese in equal proportions, stirring, to obtain a homogeneous mass. Try to use this glue immediately after mixing, as it hardens quite quickly.

Casein-based adhesive for wood and leather

For gluing wooden or leather goods, casein glue will be very effective. This type of homemade glue is also suitable for other materials, for example, for gluing puzzles. But, in order to make such glue, you need to get the casein itself, so the entire process of preparing the glue must be divided into two stages.

The first stage will involve isolating casein from cottage cheese. To do this, the cottage cheese must be low-fat. To get such cottage cheese, you can soak it in a soda solution, and you need to dilute 1-2 tablespoons of soda per liter of water (about 15-20 minutes). Afterwards, it must be thoroughly rinsed with running water, squeezed and dried until hard. Now, all that remains is to prepare a powder from it, which will be dry casein.

At the second stage you need to prepare the glue itself. To make it, you need to pour casein into a flat bowl, pouring a thin stream of water into it. Don't forget to stir the resulting mixture. The ratio will be as follows: for one part casein, you need to take two parts water. It needs to be a thick mass. Now comes the most important part of the preparation, mixing this mass. The better and more efficiently you mix the mixture, the better the glue will turn out. In general, this procedure will take at least 30 minutes, although you can do it faster with a mixer. As a result, such glue will perfectly glue wooden fragments, as well as leather, for example, shoes. This glue should be used as quickly as possible, within 3 hours after production.

Craft glue

Many housewives do needlework. Quite often they make fabric flowers, the production of which requires special fabric glue. You can also make this glue yourself at home. There are a few simple ways, which we will now consider.

Method No. 1

To do this you will need 3 tablespoons of flour and a glass of water. Dilute the flour with a small amount of water, heat the rest of the water, and pour the flour mixed with water into it in a thin stream.

Method No. 2

In the second method we need a tablespoon of flour, also a tablespoon of starch, 1 tbsp. l. sugar and a glass of water. Mix all ingredients and bring to a boil, being careful not to form lumps.

Method No. 3

You will need a packet of gelatin, two tablespoons of flour, a tablespoon of sugar, and a glass of water. Soak the gelatin in 1/3 cup of water overnight, and in the morning mix the gelatin and other ingredients in the rest of the water. Bring to a boil, and then store the glue only in the refrigerator.

Dextrin based glue

When working with paper and various types of appliqué, it is not always possible to use PVA glue. For example, dextrin-based glue, which is easy to prepare at home, would be ideal. In order to get dextrin, you can use starch. Take a bowl, pour starch into it and place in the oven over low heat. Gradually increase the oven temperature to 160 °C, and maintain it for about an hour and a half. So, starch will break down and turn into dextrin.

For glue you will need 3 tablespoons of dextrin, 5 tablespoons of water, and a spoonful of glycerin. Mix dextrin with water, heat the mixture until the dextrin is completely dissolved, and only then add glycerin. Stir, and after cooling you get ready-made glue.

Acetone and linoleum based adhesive

To make homemade glue at home, you can read a lot of recipes, and one of the cheapest is this glue. So, to prepare it you need to take old linoleum, cut it into small pieces, and place it on the bottom of the vessel. Fill it with acetone in a ratio of 1 to 2 parts (1 part linoleum, 2 parts acetone). Then, seal the container tightly and leave for 12 hours (preferably in dark place). After this time, the glue will be ready. It can be used to glue metal, porcelain, wood or leather.

Universal moisture-resistant adhesive

A fairly simple recipe for homemade universal glue that is resistant to moisture. To do this, just take wood glue and soak it in water until it completely swells. Afterwards, bring to a gelatinous state by adding linseed oil to the container.

Well, as you can see, there are very, very many ways to make homemade glue at home. In addition, each adhesive is suitable for use with one or another type of material. Plus, these are not all the recipes homemade adhesives, because there are really a lot of them.

Polyurethane foam. Help in choosing. Secrets of application

Conducting a small cosmetic repairs rooms or apartments often consists of decorating the walls. Usually this happens by changing the wallpaper. This fact is not surprising, because by re-pasting the wallpaper and rearranging the furniture, you can get an updated interior of the room without spending almost any money from family budget. For repairs, you will only need finishing materials and special glue.

Today manufacturers offer big choice a variety of glues, but they are not always suitable for certain tasks. Thus, it is almost impossible to select an adhesive for walls covered with drying oil or oil paint.

This means that you will have to cook the glue on your own, using ingredients that are found in every home.

What is paste and what does it consist of?

Removing old wallpaper from walls: a – moistening with a roller, b – removing the whitewash layer with a spatula.

Even 20-30 years ago, wallpaper paste, made from flour or starch, successfully replaced all wallpaper adhesives offered modern manufacturers. It turns out that the popularity of paste does not decline even today. Despite some disadvantages, it is readily used for wallpapering.

The main disadvantage of flour paste is its low resistance to moisture. That is why it is not recommended for use in rooms with high humidity air, and even under normal conditions the wallpaper can come off if it rains outside for several days in a row. Today, this drawback can be eliminated with the help of special additives used during glue cooking.

But glue made from flour has many advantages: it is both environmentally friendly and unpleasant odor while gluing the finishing material, and the ability to easily remove old wallpaper. To clean the walls, just moisten them with hot water, and the canvases will fall off without the slightest effort. In addition, the walls will look perfectly clean, because the paste leaves no traces and does not require additional processing before a new finish.

Paste made from flour

High-quality and effective wallpaper glue can be made from flour or starch. This adhesive will also be useful when making papier-mâché crafts or gluing large quantities of paper. What is needed to make paste? If you are planning to weld glue with your own hands, use the following recipes and recommendations that will require:

  • flour (it is not advisable to use flour premium, it’s better to take 1st or 2nd grade);
  • water;
  • PVA glue or wood glue (it will serve as an additive that increases the moisture resistance of the adhesive).

The recipe for making glue is extremely simple, and if you choose the right ingredients, welding the glue will not be difficult:

To avoid lumps and improve the quality of the prepared paste, the flour should be sifted.

  1. To prepare 1 liter of substance, take 200-250 g of flour. The flour must be sifted: this will avoid the formation of lumps and significantly improve the quality of the paste.
  2. Add a small amount of water to the flour and then mix the ingredients thoroughly.
  3. Before welding the glue, make sure there are no lumps in the mixture. Then add boiling water to the container until the volume reaches 1 liter. Pour in the liquid in a thin stream and stir constantly to prevent lumps from forming. If the paste is thick, add a little hot water.
  4. Add 0.5 cups of wood glue or PVA glue to the resulting mixture. After this, cook the mixture in a water bath or low heat until bubbles appear on the surface of the mixture.
  5. Remove the finished mixture from heat and check for lumps. If lumps do not disappear during cooking or, on the contrary, appear, strain the paste through cheesecloth.
  6. Allow the substance to cool. Usually, when the paste hardens, a thick film appears on its surface. It needs to be removed.

The paste is ready and must be used as soon as possible. As noted by experts, the composition is most effective when its temperature is 40°C. Leave the paste for a while and it will lose its adhesive properties.

Paste made from starch

If you plan to glue very thin and easily torn paper wallpaper, flour paste can be replaced with starch glue. This composition will not leave unwanted stains on the surface finishing materials. In order to prepare the glue, you will need the following ingredients:

  • starch - 1 kg;
  • water - about 9 liters.

Starch glue is prepared as follows:

Using a wooden stick, the mixture must be thoroughly mixed until a homogeneous mass is formed.

  • 1 kg of starch is sifted through a fine sieve (this removes small debris and lumps);
  • starch is poured with a small amount of warm water and mixed gently;
  • the consistency of the mixture should resemble batter;
  • the prepared mixture is brewed with boiling water, bringing the volume of the substance to 10 l; boiling water is poured in a thin stream while thoroughly stirring the mixture;
  • the resulting mixture is thoroughly kneaded until smooth using a stick, then filtered through cheesecloth and heated in a water bath;
  • if necessary, PVA glue or wood glue is added to the paste.

The resulting composition can be used not only as an adhesive, but also for priming walls before gluing finishing materials. There are situations when it is not possible to complete all repair work in one day, and a large amount of unused paste remains.

Its shelf life can be extended by several days by adding alum or carbolic acid to the composition. The proportions are as follows: for 10 liters of glue - 50 g of alum or 25 g of acid. Before use, alum must be soaked in water. If a regular paste can be stored for no more than 3-4 days, then this composition can be used after a week.

Using a recipe for making a paste from flour or starch, you can hang wallpaper even on painted surfaces. At the same time, you will not be haunted by the smell of glue made from chemical substances, and the risk of stains on the wallpaper will be reduced to zero.

For gluing paper and cardboard, priming walls or gluing light wallpaper, it is not necessary to purchase special glue. It can be made from ordinary starch. In terms of efficiency, it is absolutely not inferior to, and sometimes even superior to, adhesives made in industrial production conditions.

Pros and cons of starch glue

Glue purchased in a store is not always pleased with the quality. And it’s not always at hand in the house. Plus, the starch composition, cooked with your own hands, is absolutely safe even for children - if it gets on the skin, just wash it off with water. Therefore, when making crafts - appliqués or papier-mâché products - it is better to use it.

Using starch paste as wallpaper glue also has its advantages. It sets securely, does not leave stains and does not turn yellow over time. When removing old wallpaper, just soak it a little warm water, and they will easily move away from the wall.

Advice! Starch paste room temperature It spoils quickly, so it’s not worth preparing a large volume. Immediately put the leftovers in the refrigerator. But even in it the paste can be stored without loss of quality for only a day or two.

Manufacturing instructions

Before cooking the starch paste, prepare a sieve, a suitable container, gauze for straining and a whisk or large spoon or spatula for stirring:

If the starch has been stored in the house for a long time and is slightly caked, the powder must be sifted to get rid of lumps; It’s better to take potato starch - its adhesive ability is higher;

Now you need to fill it with warm water; the consistency should not be too thick;

Mix starch with warm water

Pour boiling water into it; to get a mixture without lumps, pour water in a thin stream (about 30 g of starch, that is, 3 teaspoons, is needed per glass of water);

Quickly and thoroughly mix the paste with a whisk;

If the solution thickens too much, add more water;

We filter it through cheesecloth and heat it in a water bath;

Warm up the glue in a water bath

To avoid the formation of a film on the surface of the paste, it is necessary to stir constantly;

Cool the resulting glue and filter through cheesecloth again;

If it will be used as wallpaper glue, add a little PVA glue or wood glue.

Important! You should not add boiling water or dry powder to a ready-made paste heated in a water bath. If you didn’t get the consistency right, you need to weld an additional portion of glue and mix it with the previous composition in the required proportion.
