Make your own overhead gates. We make our own overhead garage doors. Main types of overhead gates

In the article we will look at how to make garage overhead gates with your own hands, the main advantage of such gates is that when the garage opens, the shutter moves under the ceiling in the garage, and this is much more convenient than in the case of swing gates.

So, you have decided to install overhead gates in your garage, and do it yourself. The most simple design lifting gates is the one that was installed on “shell” type garages. However, these gates have technological gap from the gate leaf to the opening. Naturally, this is unacceptable, since in our conditions the garage must be insulated, and the presence of even a small gap is completely inappropriate.

It is required that the fit of the closed gate to the opening be as tight as possible; in addition, it is necessary to provide a wicket in the gate, so that in winter, cold air does not blow into the garage building when the gate is fully opened.

Download drawing of overhead garage doors

To make a garage door frame, you can use aluminum profile, and to arrange the frame for the gate, you can use wooden blocks. From the outside, a corrugated sheet or any other lightweight finishing material is attached to the gate frame with self-tapping screws.

After performing these steps, we get a gate in which the gate opens to the street side. The gate should open in such a way that when the gate is raised, it does not open on its own (this is fraught with injury).

The size of the gate is larger than the length of the opening (about 10 cm). This is done in order to ensure that there is no gap between the gate and the wall of the building (5 cm on the inner sides).

The lower part of the canvas on the sides needs to be equipped with wheels; I used wheels from ordinary roller skates. And so that they could easily move along the wall of the garage, I installed vertical guides: I bought them in hardware store UD profile for installation of drywall (metal thickness 0.6 mm), and used as guides. From the beginning I thought it would bend, but practice has shown that there is not a very large load on the sidewalls of the profile and it can withstand it quite well.

The doors are hung with chains (later replaced with 25x4mm metal strips) on the front wall of the garage building in such a way that the center of gravity of the leaf is lower than their fastening, and the location of the upper part is close to the opening.

Gates that do not open with leaves, but slowly disappear from our eyes, “driving away” along the walls of the garage, are convenient because they do not interfere, are not bulky, and do not take up space. The owner of such a device does not need to think about where it will be placed when opening, when a garage is being built, there is no option “difficulties in winter due to snow.” When opening such an entrance, only the lower part of the gate door near the garage ceiling is visible. Overhead gates are very secure because they are essentially a single piece of wood or metal and are very difficult to break into. If you galvanize them, they will also be very resistant to corrosion. The door will reliably protect against thieves, keep heat inside the building and will become very convenient and easy to use, but buying it is very expensive. Much cheaper and more interesting to do

Do-it-yourself lifting garage doors.

Which model to choose?
A model with sections is a canvas made up of blocks of wood, plastic, or steel, about 1.5 m in size.

Lift-and-pivot doors - during movement, the doors “drive” under the roof using the action of hinges and levers.

Such a door is very reliable and it is very difficult for an attacker to break it in order to rob a garage. They are also quiet during lifting, because they do not use “moving” elements: guides and rollers, and when using them, it is quite difficult to pinch your finger. This is an expensive choice, about 60 thousand rubles. for the object and 15 thousand for installation.

Lift-and-swivel This type of door includes a frame, a lifting leaf and a mechanism that opens the door. Steel or wooden frame mounted in the opening, profiles directly for the canvas must be placed in the box. It is made from wooden planks , sandwich panels, it should be covered with metal. A door made from a single piece of wood is a very expensive pleasure; the simpler choice is boards impregnated chemical composition

, which will protect from the weather and covered with metal, painted in any color. You can cover the tree with pieces of pressed foam or other insulating material. Before you start making gates, you need to study available methods

  • rise. Method when using hinges and levers.
  • The simple design promises reliability, but you need to very successfully install the guide profiles and carefully adjust the spring tension. The profiles should be placed parallel and evenly. Counterbalance method.

The cable is attached downwards at the corners of the frame, passed through a block, led to the winch pulley, and at its end there is a counterweight. Its mass will be commensurate with the weight of the gate. This option means that the frame and frame will be subject to considerable load; it is recommended to choose such a mechanism exclusively for huge gates. Next step: gate design. We measure the opening and draw a sketch (we look for drawings on the Internet).

The box is assembled from wooden blocks, their ends are connected by steel plates or corners, and the bottom goes 2 cm deep into the floor, then we fix it into the opening with steel pins.

This type of door includes a frame, a lifting leaf and a mechanism that opens the door.

How to make a design The frame is made like this: take a thick corner, its parameters are directly dependent on the panel fabric, with 25, take the 75th, with 50, the 100th corner. Next, we measure the garage and prepare the opening for attaching the frame, you need to make sure that its surfaces are smooth and even, if this is not the case, we take the grinder in our hands and work. Next we look for the welding process. We will have 2 channels lying on the welding site, their parameters are 20 cm smaller than the frame. We cut the corners to length at both ends, making sure that they fit tightly. We weld them together, make cuts and use four (five) electrodes, create a frame, but do not weld them very tightly. We apply it to the opening and control the density; if it is not there, then we adjust what happened and weld it again, then we clean the seams. We do the same with the second part of the frame, then do the same on the second wall, the frame should be made double - internal and external, install it.

A support for the channel bracket is made from the corner, a hole is made in one shelf to secure it to the racks, and 3 holes are made in the other to secure the spring bracket. We secure the bracket by drilling 3 holes in one of the shelves. Next, we make an adjustment plate from an iron strip and use it to connect the spring and bracket. We bend the last turns of the spring with hooks, attaching a tension regulator from a rod to the bottom. We create a hinge corner for the lower part from the corner, drill a hole of 8.5 mm and weld it to the frame, retreating from the lower edge to the central part of the hole. Thus, we prepare for the manufacture of a lever for lifting on a 12-cm hinge. Next, we weld to its end and attach a plate for the voltage regulator.

Garage Doors

It is advised to pour concrete into a trench along the length of the stroke between the side posts, press the channel parallel to the ground, and when it hardens, weld both frames.

Installation of the canvas

We measure the diagonal, taking into account the dimensions, attach it by welding, all kinds of gaps are eliminated, we clean the seams and install the canvas. We attach the brackets and guides, their horizontal position must be made ideal, then: we insulate the canvas, fasten the metal sheet, clean the seams, degrease. We adjust the springs and secure the internal fittings. The entire celebration of work and construction will take two to three days.

Up-and-over sectional doors

The option is complicated, but they are airtight and better protect the room. They can be electric or manual. The first option is convenient; just press a button or remote control and you’re done. But the manual drive breaks less often, and it is easier to make a shield for it. Required Parts impossible to make at home. Parts cannot be purchased on the market; it is better to buy a factory kit.

The garage doorway should be measured and assessed whether a standard door leaf will fit, and also check that the side parts and the top and bottom of the opening are in the same plane. To the heights doorway add 50 cm (if the gate is with a drive - 100 cm), this is the length of the garage required for the gate to rest on its ceiling.

The option is complicated, but they are airtight and better protect the room

Sectional doors consist of a door leaf, locks, a movement mechanism, a spring balancing mechanism and guide modules. Tires are attached to the edges of the opening, which are driven under the ceiling, and the gate moves along them. It is better to buy polymer sections; they are practically resistant to corrosion, do not create noise, and can withstand temperatures of -50 - +60.

Installation diagram

Create markings to secure the frame and constituent elements. Collect frame structure(not much different from a similar algorithm for up-and-over gates). Everything is standard: we install the frame, bolt the guides to the ceiling, but there is no need to drill holes or make other structures to hold it suspended. We assemble the canvas, starting from the bottom, and equip the panel elements with rollers. We protect the structure with casings. We check - if everything is done correctly, the canvas will not move on its own, hovering at the level at which it was installed.

It’s worth saying in conclusion - homemade sectional doors must be safe. The bet is your own car, or even your life. You should be extremely careful about the installation rules, adhere to safety precautions and pay a small amount to a specialist who will check the quality of the door installation after the owner’s efforts.

Do-it-yourself lifting gates

Communities › Do It Yourself › Blog › Lifting garage doors.

Unfortunately, I cannot buy sectional doors, so I decided to make the doors myself.
I decided to do it as simply as possible, and from what was at hand and in any household. store, eventually came to this design.

I like it this option the fact that it is easy to manufacture, upper guides are unnecessary and the fact that the gate has an extension to the outside of the garage, convenient in the summer when it is raining or sunny from the side of the gate, cover it a little and there are no problems.
Well, the main factor is that this type of mechanism eats up less internal space when closing and opening, since if you put the car back to the gate, the simple design would touch it. But I don’t want to move the car back and forth to open and close the gates.

Well, actually about the design.
My gate opening dimensions are: width 298 cm, height 230 cm.

When making the gate I used:
Profile pipe 40 x 20 x 600 cm = 4 pcs.
Corner 35 x 35 x 600 cm = 4 pcs.
Corner 25 x 25 x 600 cm = 1 pc.
Polyurethane wheels = 2 pcs.
Corrugated sheet C8 120 x 200 = 6 sheets.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a 3-meter one, it’s out of stock, and the order quantity is very small.
Cable 3 mm = 5 meters.
Thumb for cable 3 mm = 4 pcs.
Cable mount = 4 pcs.
Block for cable 30 mm = 6 pcs. (Temporary solution, will be replaced with bearings).
Bolts, nuts = I had them.

I started by calculating the distance of the gate extension and the rod attachment.
I drew everything to scale on paper and checked how the gate would open.
I decided to make the distance from the bottom of the gate to the wheel 80 cm, that is, the gate overhang is 80 cm, but it turned out to be 81 cm.
At this distance, the gate did not touch the car when opening.

But with the distance for attaching the rod, we had to use the selection method.
I took a rail according to the height of the collar, marked on it the place where the wheel would be attached, 81 cm, then screwed in a self-tapping screw where the top fastening of the rod was planned, tied a rope, and with the other end on the rail I selected the required distance, I got 85 cm.
The selection principle is as in the photo below.

For the upper mount of the rod, one corner of the support post above the height of the gate opening was welded in the other direction (with the corner outward, see photo).
I drilled a hole for an M12 bolt, welded a shock absorber bushing from a Volga or Lada to the rod, I don’t remember exactly, it’s not a problem to find it in spare parts (see photo below).

To date, many different garage doors have been developed and successfully implemented in practice. Among all existing options Traditional overhead doors are particularly convenient and ergonomic, as they effectively slide under the garage ceiling when opened. At the same time, assemble and install lifting Garage Doors you can do it yourself.

Do-it-yourself garage doors

Types of overhead gates

There are 2 main types of overhead garage doors.

Lift-sectional gates

Lift-sectional gates

The leaf of such a gate consists of a number of individual panels, the height of each of which is about 50 cm. Steel, wood and plastic can be used to make the panels.

Hinges are used to connect the panels. Rollers, couplings and other moving elements are made of steel or plastic; stainless materials are used to make guides.

The inner part of the canvas is necessarily insulated (mainly with polyurethane foam), which allows you to retain additional heat inside the garage.

Types of lifting sectional garage doors

Among the main advantages of overhead sectional doors, the following points should be noted:

  • safety of use;
  • simplicity and maximum ease of use;
  • good strength characteristics.

The main disadvantage of this subtype of gate is the almost complete absence of the possibility of hacking and illegal entry. In addition, you cannot make such a gate yourself - it is extremely difficult.

The only one affordable option– buy a factory kit and install the gate yourself according to the instructions.

Up and over gates

You can assemble and install such a structure yourself. When you open this gate, the whole leaf rises at once. A hinge-lever type system is responsible for the movement of the moving part. The gates are characterized by excellent strength characteristics (the final indicator depends on the properties of the manufacturing material) and provide reliable protection garage from attacks by intruders.

Up-and-over gates

The structure can be assembled without the use of guides and rollers. Thanks to this, the canvas will move silently.

To assemble such a structure, narrow technical knowledge is not required. This event also does not require large financial investments.

Advantages and disadvantages

Like all existing mechanisms, overhead garage doors have a number of strong qualities and some disadvantages.

Advantages

The main advantage of the systems under consideration is increased burglary resistance. The only way to get inside the garage is to cut through the canvas. It is almost impossible to cut the frame and get inside without attracting attention.

Garage doors "Hörmann"

The second important advantage of the design is its long service life. However, in order for the gate to serve for a truly long time, high-quality galvanized metal should be used to make the door leaf.

Garage doors "Hörmann"

The gates do not take up space in front of the garage, which makes entry and exit as convenient as possible.

Flaws

Among the main disadvantages of overhead gates, the following provisions should be noted:

  • heavy weight of the structure. The disadvantage is relative - other existing structures weigh no less. But in order for the operation of lift gates to be safe, you need to pay attention Special attention quality and reliability of the frame;
  • slightly increased consumption of raw materials;
  • some inconvenience when entering the garage. For example, you will need to constantly get out of the car before reaching the garage by about 1.5-2 m - without such a reserve the gate simply will not open.
  • in the open position, the gate takes away approximately 20-30 cm of the opening height;
  • in case of significant damage to the canvas, it will have to be completely dismantled.

However, despite all its minor drawbacks, such gates are an incredibly convenient and ergonomic solution.

Features of the design

Do-it-yourself garage doors

Traditional overhead gates are made up of many elements. Check out the features of each one.

The frame serves as the basis for the entire structure. The frame should be as rigid as possible and securely fixed to the garage wall.

The side profile is the guide element along which the main part of the structure moves.

Guides - as already noted, you can do without them. But if possible, it is better not to exclude them from the structure.

Homemade lift gates

Canvas. Manufactured as a one-piece device. Usually made from corrugated sheets. Sometimes wood is also used to make canvases, but it is better to refuse such a solution - the material is heavy and relatively short-lived.

Insulation. Placed between sheets of canvas. It is most convenient to use polyurethane foam.

Rollers, springs and levers. These elements are responsible for the movement of the gate leaf. The sash rises along the guide element, takes a horizontal position closer to the ceiling and is finally fixed parallel to the ceiling surface.

Compensating springs. Provides easier lifting of the web.

Electric or mechanical drive. Electronics are more convenient - to control the gate you just need to press a button on the portable remote control. Mechanics are more reliable in most cases. If you decide to use an electric drive, remember important rule– the gate shield should have a somewhat lightweight design.

If desired, the finished canvas can be decorated with a variety of decorative elements. All of them are available for sale in specialized stores.

It is important to remember: any decorative element, especially if it is forging, contributes to an increase in the weight of the structure. Know your limits.

What to buy?

You can make most of the gate elements yourself. However, there are some things that are better to buy ready-made and not waste time. Give preference to devices made of metals good quality. In general, you will need the following:

  • limit bar. Located at the bottom of the system;
  • edging profile. Protects against moisture and prevents corrosion by preventing rain and melt water from entering the garage. Instead of this element, you can use high-quality and reliable sealing material;
  • decorative overlays. With their help you will close the gaps between the frame. Even if you follow the instructions and do everything as accurately as possible with regular level checks, you still won’t be able to align and adjust everything down to the millimeter;
  • thermal insulation materials;
  • decorative elements of your choice.

Do it yourself lifting garage doors

DIY gates

Making and installing gates yourself will allow you to save a significant amount of money on the purchase of a ready-made system and the services of third-party installers.

Video - Installation of sectional doors

Up-and-over garage doors

First step. Select the appropriate type of gate opener.

The most popular are hinged lever mechanisms. This design is durable and extremely simple. However, its installation requires increased precision from the installer at the stage of placing the guides and setting the spring tension level. The guides must be installed exclusively vertically and parallel.

The second option is a mechanism made using counterweights. The cable is attached to the corners of the support frame in its lower part, passes along the block in the direction of the pulley, and already at its (the cable’s) end there is some counterweight. The heavier and larger the blade, the heavier the counterweight used should be. It is recommended to give preference to this mechanism only when installing massive and very heavy overhead gates.

Second step. Design a gate. Pre-measure the existing opening and prepare a sketch (or choose ready-made option from open sources).

Third step. Prepare tools for assembling the gate. You will need the following:

  • high strength wooden blocks;
  • good quality metal pins;
  • corners;
  • brackets;
  • hard springs;
  • metal rods;
  • decorative elements.

Fourth step. Assemble the box of future gates from a transverse and a pair vertical bars. To connect the bars, use squares; plates are also suitable.

Fifth step. Recess the bottom of the box into concrete screed garage floor by about 20 mm and secure the product in the opening with metal pins.

Sixth step. Assemble the frame and cover it with the selected material.

Garage door installation

Seventh step. Make a support. Use a corner as a starting material. Using a drill, make a hole in the shelf for fixing to the posts. In the second shelf, prepare 3 holes for installing the bracket. To make a spring support, use a channel bracket.

Eighth step. Prepare a plate from a strip of steel. Connect the bracket and a suitable spring using a steel plate. Bend the outermost turns of the fixed spring like hooks. Connect a tension controller made of a metal rod from below.

Garage door installation

Ninth step. Make a bottom hinge corner. You need to drill a hole about 8.5 mm in diameter in the corner and weld the product to the supporting frame of the structure, stepping back from the bottom edge to the center of the prepared hole. The gap will allow you to place the lift arm in in the right place hinge

Tenth step. Attach the plate to the end of the lift arm. To securely fix the elements, use welding.

Eleventh step. Make rails for the movement of the gate leaf. Use a couple of corners as the starting material. Line them up and weld along one edge. The distance between the inner vertices of the steel angles should be 50 mm.

Twelfth step. Attach the finished rail to the previously prepared plate. Use welding for fastening. At the same time, leave an 8-centimeter gap between the axis of the guide part and the edge of the transverse product at the bottom. Attach a piece of channel to the second end of the rail by welding, retreating about 15 cm. Then screw the channel to the ceiling beam with a bolt.

Video - Guides for overhead garage doors, part 1

Video - Guides for overhead garage doors, part 2

Thirteenth step. Install several translucent inserts into the canvas. This is an optional item. Use translucent inserts if you need to improve natural lighting inside the garage.

Video - Lift gate frame, part 3

Video - Wheels for overhead gates, part 4

Fourteenth step. Glue on the rubber sealing edging. It also wouldn’t hurt to stick on compensating pads. Together, these elements will increase the stability of homemade overhead gates.

Fifteenth step. Secure the canvas in the box.

Thus, in self-assembly there are no super-complicated tasks for lifting garage doors, but this work must be approached with maximum responsibility and knowledge of the matter. Follow the instructions, do everything as accurately as possible, and your garage door will become its reliable and durable protection.

Do-it-yourself lifting garage doors: how to do it better

Lifting garage doors are convenient, reliable, practical design to protect the premises from entry by unauthorized persons. When opened, they take a horizontal position, moving forward slightly, forming above the entrance small sizes visor.

How to make garage doors with your own hands, their advantages and disadvantages will be discussed in this article.

Types of overhead gates, their advantages and disadvantages

There are two types of overhead garage doors:

  • Devices in which the canvas has several sections about half a meter high. When opened, such a canvas, consisting of panels, is “pulled” into the garage under the ceiling, and then falls back vertically down. The materials for the manufacture of elements can be:
  1. tree;
  2. plastic;
  3. metal.

The space inside the door leaf is filled with insulation - polyurethane, which provides effective thermal insulation designs.

The door panels, in this case, are connected using hinges. In such products, rollers, couplings and other moving elements are made of metal or plastic; materials that are resistant to corrosion are used for guide rails.

Advantages of this design:

  1. easy to use;
  2. sufficient reliability.
  1. low resistance to burglary;
  2. It is unrealistic to make such a device completely on your own.

To reduce the cost you can:

  1. leave the manual drive, but refuse mechanical device, impairs ease of use;
  2. reduce the size of the gate opening - adjust its width and height to the minimum number of panels.

Tip: If you want to install a structure of this type in your garage with your own hands, you should purchase a set of elements already prepared for assembly, and install them yourself.

  • Swivel overhead garage doors. In this case, the solid sash rises to the ceiling when opened. The movement of the element is carried out due to the action of a hinge-lever mechanism. The diagram of such a device is shown in the photo.

The advantages of this design are:

  1. high strength of the product;
  2. the device perfectly protects the garage from unauthorized entry;
  3. silent operation of the gate when the door leaf moves - there are no rollers or guides that could create noise;
  4. It’s quite possible to make overhead garage doors with your own hands. To do this, you don’t have to have special technical knowledge, but their price is much lower; the costs will only be associated with the purchase of the material.

Design disadvantages include:

  1. their installation is possible only in rectangular openings;
  2. the height of the opening when open is reduced by about 20 centimeters;
  3. the solid fabric of the device does not allow repair of individual sections, which, if damaged, requires complete replacement the entire element;
  4. the gates have a spring mechanism designed for a certain mass of the product, therefore, if it is necessary to perform thermal insulation, the mass of the insulation should be taken into account: if it significantly increases the total weight of the insulated gate, it will be necessary to install counterweights;
  5. There may be gaps between the frame and the canvas; they can be eliminated rubber seal, but such gates should only be installed in unheated garages.

How do overhead gates work?

Overhead garage doors consist of:

  • Frames. This is the basis of the structure, it is installed in the garage opening or directly behind it and serves as the leading part of the product when moving the gate. The frame is usually made from rectangular pipes.
  • Roller and lift arm systems, serving to open the gate. With their help, the sash of the structure moves along the guides and is then secured under the garage ceiling.
  • Canvases. Its lower part rises up and forms a canopy over the garage opening. For insulating a garage door leaf glued with pressed polystyrene foam, insulated with polystyrene foam or other thermal insulation materials. For beauty, they can be covered with panels made of plastic or wood.
  • Guides, which serve to rotate the frame around its axis. At the same time, it moves from a vertical position to a horizontal position and back.
  • Compensation springs, which in closed position the devices stretch, but remain free when open.

  • The hinged lever or simple one is the most reliable and most popular device, which ensures easy movement of the shield and prevents it from blocking.

Tip: Be sure to carefully adjust the spring tension and ensure high accuracy installation of guides. In this case, to prevent the shield from jamming, it is necessary to set the guides strictly vertically and be sure to have both of them parallel to each other.

  • Mechanism on counterweights. In this design, the cable is attached at the bottom to the corners of the frame, goes through a block to the winch pulley, and a counterweight is placed at the end. As the weight of the gate shield increases, the mass of the counterweight increases. In this case, the gate frame and frame are heavily loaded, and the mechanism is used for installation in massive gates.

How to make your own overhead garage doors

Before you start making overhead garage doors with your own hands, you need to decide on the opening mechanism. After choosing its type, the dimensions of the gate opening are taken, a design sketch is designed, materials and tools are purchased.

To work you will need:

  • Wooden blocks for making a box - with a section of 12 x 8 centimeters and for the ceiling 10 x 10 centimeters.
  • Metal pins.
  • Equilateral angles: for rails, section 40 x 4 and for frame 35 x 4.
  • Channel No. 8 for the bracket.
  • Spring.
  • Metal rod, 8 mm in diameter.

The instructions for making garage doors with your own hands suggest:

  • Assemble a frame from two vertical bars and one transverse one. The parts are connected with steel angles or plates.
  • The vertical posts should be buried two centimeters into the floor screed.
  • Secure the frame in the opening with steel pins.
  • Assemble the frame for the gate leaf.
  • The gate leaf is assembled from boards, the outside is covered steel sheet.
  • Expanded polystyrene, polystyrene foam can be used for thermal insulation.
  • Make a support for the unit: two holes with a diameter of 10 millimeters are drilled in one of the corner shelves to attach the support to the racks, in the other shelf there are three more holes for fixing the spring bracket. For a spring, it is better to make a support from a channel.
  • Make an adjustment plate from a strip of metal to connect the spring and bracket.
  • The outer coils of the spring are bent in the form of hooks, and a voltage regulator made of a rod is attached to the bottom. On one side a ring is obtained, on the other the thread is cut.
  • From the corner, make a hinge unit for the bottom of the structure with a hole with a diameter of 8.5 millimeters and weld it to the frame between the rib located at the bottom and the middle of the hole intended for installing the lifting mechanism lever located on the 120 mm hinge.

  • Weld a plate to the end of the lever to install the voltage regulator.
  • Make rails on which the gate will move. To do this, two corners are connected and then welded so that between their tops there is inner space five centimeters and welded along one edge.
  • Weld the rail to the plate with holes. A gap of 8 centimeters should be left between the guide axis and the rib installed at the bottom of the cross member.
  • At the other end of the rail, weld a piece of channel, stepping back about 15 centimeters from the end.
  • The channel is fixed with a bolt to the ceiling beam.
  • During the installation process, constant monitoring of the horizontal position of the guides should be carried out.
  • The canvas can additionally be equipped with locking systems that will increase its safety, and the installation of various security mechanisms will protect against burglary.
  • You can increase the amount of light in the garage by installing inserts made of translucent material in the canvas.
  • To give the structure additional stability, you can stick on compensating pads and install a rubber edging.

The video will show you in more detail how to properly make a garage door. Also on our resource you can learn in detail about swing garages metal gates with a gate.

A garage is a structure that receives special attention, especially in terms of burglary resistance. And an element such as a gate must have double strength and reliability, and, of course, an attractive appearance. Traditionally, garage doors are swing design of two doors, hung on a frame. Making them yourself is not a problem if you have the skills to work with simple plumbing tools and a welding machine. This will be discussed in the article: about options swing gates, about manufacturing technology and the nuances of the installation process.

Types of garage doors

In addition to the fact that swing garage doors are traditional and very reliable, they have other advantages.

  1. The cost of construction is cheaper than all other models.
  2. The swing modification can be insulated using various thermal insulation materials.
  3. Can be installed in limited space.
  4. They can open outside or inside the garage, depending on the owner’s requirements.
  5. Possibility of installing an electric motor for automatic opening.

The only big drawback is that free space is required to open the doors of the structure. This is sometimes problematic in winter, when snow piles up in drifts in front of the garage. Therefore, you have to swing a shovel.

The disadvantage of swing gates is that you have to clear the area of snow from the area in front of them

In addition to swing gates, other types are installed in garages.

Folding

This is a sectional type of gate, the elements of which are installed vertically and connected to each other using a hinge method. The outer sections are attached, like the swing sections, to the frame with hinges. Additional fastening - along the upper or lower guide. Sections are made from different materials, more often from aluminum alloys or wood.

Design advantages:

  • unusual appearance,
  • ease of opening and closing,
  • do not take up much space when open,
  • sections can be individually changed, repaired,
  • low price.

Cons: rapid wear and low protective functions.

Folding gates

Lift-and-swivel

Purely structurally, it is a solid shield that covers the entire entrance opening. To open, the gate is raised and rotated 90° so that it is at the top in the horizontal plane. For this, a system of levers, a gearbox and an electric motor are used.

Pros of the model:

  • high reliability,
  • V open form the gates do not take up any space,
  • amenable to insulation,
  • amenable to automation.
  • high installation accuracy is required,
  • the gate remains in the opening, reducing its height by 20-30 cm,
  • It is not recommended to use them intensively.

Up and over gates

Lifting sectional

This is a structure of several sections located horizontally and interconnected by special hinges. Using a lifting mechanism located on the ceiling, the gate is lifted along guide profiles and positioned horizontally along the ceiling. Sections are mainly made of sandwich panels.

Pros of the model:

  • versatility in terms of opening sizes,
  • saving free space when opening,
  • good resistance to deformation and mechanical loads,
  • full automation,
  • presentable appearance,
  • high heat and sound insulation qualities,
  • long-term operation.
  • high price,
  • constant maintenance is required: lubrication of hinges and guides, checking electrical and automation systems,
  • low burglary resistance.

Up-and-over sectional doors

Rolled

These garage doors got their name from the way they open. Purely structurally, these are several strips (lamellas) assembled into one sheet, which is rolled into a roll. Therefore, in addition to the door leaf, the gate includes two guides that hold the structure in the opening, a shaft on which the slats are wound, and an electric drive.

Advantages:

  • compactness,
  • acceptable price,
  • ease of installation,
  • long term service,
  • presentable appearance,
  • possibility of automation.
  • almost zero burglary resistance,
  • it is not possible to carry out insulation, because there are always gaps between the lamellas,
  • do not work well at low temperatures.

Rolling gates

Recoil

In this design, there is one leaf, which is supported on a guide profile located on top and rests against the rail from below. The device is opened by rolling it to the side along the wall.

The advantages include:

  • functionality does not depend on snowdrifts,
  • does not take up space when opened,
  • high burglary resistance,
  • possibility of automation.
  • rapid wear of the rollers,
  • The width of the wall along which the gate is moved must be greater than the width of the leaf.

Sliding gates

Do-it-yourself swing garage door manufacturing technology

So, swing gates for a garage are two doors (often equal in width), which are hung on a U-shaped frame using hinges. Therefore, when the task is set to produce gates of this type, several issues are resolved:

  • manufacturing of sashes,
  • making a box (frame),
  • installation of the latter,
  • installation of sashes on the frame.

Before you start making swing gates, you need to decide on their dimensions.

Sizes of garage swing doors

There are no strict size requirements. The main thing is that the car can freely enter the garage without hitting the gate. And this allows you to make any opening, the width and height of which is 30 cm larger than the dimensions of the car on each side. But this is inconvenient, especially for novice drivers.

  • height for passenger cars– 2.0-2.2 m, for minibuses – 2.5 m;
  • optimal width is 2.5-3 m, maximum – 5 m.

Standard sizes of swing gates

Preparing to make gates

Required tools:

  • welding machine and electrodes;
  • grinder with cutting and grinding disc;
  • tape measure, ruler and marker (chalk);
  • level and corner.

Required materials. Outer side a gate is a sheet steel sheet with a thickness of 3-4 mm or corrugated sheeting with a thickness of at least 1.2 mm. If the first material is used in the design, then the entire connection process is carried out by electric welding. If the latter, then the corrugated sheeting can be fastened to the frame using metal screws.

As a material for assembling the frame, you can use either a 63x63 mm corner or a 40x40 mm profiled pipe with a thickness of 2-3 mm. The second option is cheaper and easier to use.

Drawing of swing gates for a garage made from a profile pipe

And the last element is the hinges, which are made from a steel bar with a minimum diameter of 25 mm. There must be at least four hinges, two for each sash.

Now, as for the U-shaped box. It consists of two racks and a crossbar (crossbar). The first ones can be made from a 63x63 angle or pipe round section with a diameter of 80-100 mm, or a profiled pipe with a cross-section of at least 80x60 mm. The crossbar is made of the same materials. If construction is planned two-story garage, then it is better to use channel No. 12 as a crossbar.

Gate assembly drawing

Manufacturing of frames for sashes

The first stage is cutting eight pieces of material prepared for assembling the frames. Four of them should be equal to the height of the gate minus 1-2 cm, four to the width of the leaves, that is, half the width of the gate structure minus 2-3 cm. For example, if the total width of the gate is 3 m, then it is necessary to cut four elements 1 at a time. 48 m.

Aligning the frame on blocks in a horizontal plane

An important point is that the frames must be assembled on a horizontal plane. It is not necessary that it be a flat area; any type of stand will do, the upper ends of which are aligned in the same horizontal plane. You can use bricks or blocks for this. They are installed in the corners of a rectangle, the length of which is equal to the height of the leaf, the width is equal to the width of the gate section. Appropriately cut sections are laid on them, and then a level is checked to see if they lie horizontally. Deviations are leveled out by placing blocks of thin planks, stones or sheet metal under them.

The laid sections are fixed to each other by spot welding with precise alignment of adjacent elements to each other at 90°. A construction corner is used for this. This important point, which determines the exact dimensions of the future gate structure, which will fit exactly into the frame without distortions or large gaps.

Scheme of stiffeners

Two frames have been formed, now it is necessary to increase the rigidity of the structure by installing additional elements: horizontal or vertical. If the gate is large, then both are used. Sometimes they are supplemented with oblique elements. The material used is a corner or a smaller profile pipe. For example, if the frames were assembled from a 40x40 mm pipe, then 40x20 mm can be used for reinforcement. Additional elements are evenly distributed relative to each other.

After assembling the frames, it is necessary to weld the joints on both sides and sand them to remove scale and metal stains.

The rigidity of the frame structure is determined additional elements, installed vertically and horizontally

Connection of frame and steel sheet

A rectangular section must be cut from a sheet of iron for each sash. There are certain requirements for their sizes:

  • the length of the segments should be 3-4 cm greater than the height of the gate opening;
  • One of the rectangles should be 2 cm smaller in width than the width of the frame, and the second one should be larger by the same size.

For example, if the width of the doors is 1.5 m, the height is 2.5 m, then one sheet will be 1.52x2.54 mm in size, the other 1.48x2.54 mm.

Now, in height, two sheets are placed on the frames so that their edges protrude beyond frame structure 2 cm on each side. The protrusions of the sheets will close the gap between the sashes and the frame. As for the width, on the hinge side the sheets are laid flush with profile pipe. In one sash, the sheet will protrude from the opposite side by 2 cm, in the other, on the contrary, its edge will not reach the edge of the frame. This is done so that when the gate is closed, the protruding sheet closes the gap between the leaves.

Attention! The sheets are welded to the frame pointwise from the edge to the center. After that, welding is carried out in small sections within 3-4 cm in increments of 10-15 cm.

The sheet is fastened to the frame using short seams

Assembling the swing gate frame

The dimensions of the box are determined by the dimensions of the opening. At the same time, to the length support posts half a meter is added, with which the structure will be recessed into the prepared pits, followed by concreting.

The box is assembled using the same technology as the sash frames, with installation on bricks or blocks. Box sizes according to inner contour the width is slightly larger than the total width of the sashes. The difference is 2-3 cm. In height, the difference can be significant - up to 5-6 cm. Although optimal is 3-4 cm.

Box for swing gates

Installation of hinges

To do this, the sashes are laid on a U-shaped frame with an exact location in the plane, forming gaps between all elements. The assembled hinges are placed at their required location and welded: their lower parts to the frame posts, their upper parts to the frame of the sashes.

To strengthen the fasteners, you can additionally weld metal strips or reinforcement to the hinges.

Correct and high-quality loop welding

Installation of swing gates

Ideally, the gate frame should be installed during the construction of the garage, when half of the walls are already raised from bricks or blocks. But regardless of this, installation is carried out using the same technology.

  1. Holes are dug for the racks with a depth of 0.5 m.
  2. One or two crossbars made of reinforcement or a corner 10-20 cm long are welded to the lower edges of the racks, the purpose of which is to serve as holding elements in the concrete.

Preparing the stand before concreting the pit

  1. The supports are welded at the bottom metal plates in the form of a penny to rest on the ground.
  2. The half-meter ends of the racks are processed waterproofing composition, for example, with hot bitumen or covered with roofing felt.
  3. The box is installed in the pits with precise alignment in the opening, for which a building level is used.
  4. The racks are welded to the embedded parts, which are installed during the wall laying process. Reinforcement with a diameter of 12-16 mm and a length of 50 cm is often used as mortgages. The laying step is every 6-8 rows.
  5. Concrete is mixed at the rate of cement-sand-crushed stone in the ratio 1:2:2, if the cement grade is M400.
  6. Pouring concrete into pits with a tamper. This is done not only to compact concrete mortar, but also in order to squeeze out the air that got there during the kneading process. Air pores reduce the strength of concrete.
  7. You can hang the sashes on the frame after the concrete has set and dried.

How to make a gate with a wicket?

The process of assembling swing gates and doors is exactly the same. Simply, four elements are inserted into one of the leaves to form an opening for the door. Vertical ones are installed at full height, horizontal ones between them in the form of crossbars. The doorway structure is assembled at the stage of manufacturing the frame for the sash.

Door location in gates with standard dimensions

The door itself is manufactured in exactly the same way as the gate sections, with frame assembly and installation metal sheet. The complexity of the manufacturing process of the leaf itself, in which the door is installed, lies in the fact that the doorway remains uncovered by a sheet of metal, and the remaining planes must be closed with it. All of them will not be equal to each other, so each section must be accurately measured, transferred the dimensions to the sheet and cut them out. After which, each cut piece is transferred to the frame with spot welding around the perimeter. In this case, the laid sections of sheets must be joined on additional profiles that create rigidity of the frame structure.

Drawing of a swing garage door with a wicket

The size of the gate is selected taking into account the convenient passage through it, as well as the dimensions of the gate leaf. For example, if the leaf width is 1.5 m, then the width of the gate should not exceed 1 m. As for the height, the height of the gate and the location of the door itself relative to the lower elements of the gate frame are also taken into account. Wherein maximum height location - 40 cm. The height of the door itself is within 1.8-2.1 m.

Conclusion

Despite the apparent simplicity of the assembly process, it should be noted that the manufacture of swing garage doors requires attention from the manufacturer and the ability to accurately carry out all measurements and calculations. At the same time, one must not let go of measuring instruments. A slight deviation in shape or size may result in the doors simply not fitting into the frame. You will have to make adjustments in place, which will affect the evenness of the elements.

Detailed information about

Stands out among its peers in some ways advantages. Firstly, they are made from whole cloth, which can be made very resistant to hacking attempts. Secondly, up and over gates When open, they do not take up as much space in the space in front of the garage as swing doors do.

Thirdly, with sufficient experience and skill in working with sensors and electric drives, they can be made automatic that open when you press the remote control.

An additional, but nevertheless important advantage of self-made overhead garage doors is the large number of options to choose from. decor– the gate can be sheathed with clapboard, plastic panels, steel and much more.

Overhead garage doors - dimensions:

But in addition to the advantages, you need to remember shortcomings. The main disadvantage of up and over gates is that in the open position they are installed horizontally under the ceiling, taking away about 20 cm on the height of the opening, which in some situations can cause inconvenience (for example, when you are trying to drive into a garage in a tall SUV).

A significant disadvantage of solid fabric is that if it is damaged, it will not be necessary to replace it. separate element, A the entire structure at once. In addition, it can be quite heavy, which puts a lot of stress on the frame and lifting system.

Rising garage doors have one more disadvantage: they can only be used in rectangular openings. But here it should be remembered that garages with arched or other shaped openings are extremely rare.

We buy everything you need

Now it's time to take a pen, a few sheets of paper and make a list of everything you need to make overhead gates to the garage with your own hands. All this can be purchased at the nearest construction department store, so there shouldn’t be any big problems finding materials and tools.

So for homemade overhead gates for the garage we need:

  1. Wooden beam section 100x100 And 120x80 mm. They can be replaced steel profile comparative strength.
  2. Corners 40x40 and thickness 4 mm.
  3. Channel 40x80 mm.
  4. Material for canvas: thick boards 25 mm, corrugated sheets or plastic panels.
  5. Steel rod diameter 8 mm.
  6. Two springs with inner diameter 30 mm.
  7. Anchor bolts and screws.

As for tools, first of all, we need a tape measure, an angle and a level to carefully check that the dimensions of the overhead garage door are correct.

To work with metal we will need an angle grinder (also better known as an angle grinder) and a welding machine. In addition, we need to saw wooden beam and carry out other work with it, which means we need electric jigsaw, drill and screwdriver. Well, what would a repair be without a hammer, screwdrivers and wrenches?

Pre-planning

How to do overhead gates to the garage yourself? Together with a tape measure and a level, you should go to the opening to find out the dimensions of your homemade garage door. This is a very important stage, which further determines whether your work will be successful.

After this, you can take a sheet of paper and start making your own blueprints overhead garage doors. So, they will consist of a solid canvas, an opening, a frame under the ceiling and moving mechanisms.

First of all, you need to carefully measure the drawing lifting garage doors of all sizes, so that in the future there will be no inconsistencies and problems during manufacturing. It will be useful to make a plan from several views, including isometry.

If at this stage you have difficulties, try to find a friend with experience in compiling drawings and, even better, gate making. Made with your own hands blueprints overhead garage doors? Now it's time to take action!

Do-it-yourself lifting garage doors: step-by-step instructions

How to do up and over gates to the garage with your own hands?

  1. First of all, we need to equip opening. Vertical supports made of 120x80 mm timber should be dug into the garage (if it is already filled) or the ground (if not yet) by 20-30 millimeters; for greater reliability, the depth can be increased. Both vertical and horizontal beams will be attached to the walls of the garage using anchor bolts.
  2. Assembling the frame for ceiling. To do this, a horizontal beam for the guides should be installed from the opening at a distance of approximately the length of the gate. It is important that it is parallel to the horizontal beam of the opening and is the same in height throughout its entire length; distortions are unacceptable.
  3. Of the two metal corners assembled by welding guide rail, along which the roller mounted on the canvas will move. The distances between the corner vertices should be carefully monitored during assembly. Two such rails must be attached to the upper beams; for this you can use metal fittings and self-tapping screws.
  4. We manufacture canvas frame. For it, you can take a wooden beam, or metal corners welded into a square profile. For better durability of the canvas, transverse or diagonal beams can be welded (or attached) to the main frame. Don't forget about the rollers at the top of the structure.
  5. When using fastening material, you need sheathe the canvas the material you have chosen.
  6. This point in the manufacture of overhead gates is very important and great attention should be paid to it. Using corners and fasteners, you need to make movable brackets on both support beams. The levers of their channels should be attached to them, which will push the blade upward.
  7. To keep the gate open, you need springs. They are attached to the bottom of the supports, to the bracket and to the end of the channel. When the door is raised, the spring is compressed and does not allow spontaneous lowering: closing the gate will require considerable effort. It would not be superfluous to equip the fastening of the spring to the bracket and channel with a tension regulator.
  8. Final stage gate manufacturing– installation of all elements, insulation of the canvas and fastening of the decorative covering to the sheathing.

Do-it-yourself lifting garage doors (from profile):

Further up and over gates for a garage can be improved by adding the ability automatic opening and closing. To do this, you will need an electric drive, a signal receiver and a control panel. As the latter, you can use a key fob for a car alarm, and as a drive - either a reverse winch or a power window mechanism.

Don't forget to install a reliable locking system, which will protect your garage from illegal entry. If you often come here and you don’t need to lift the canvas every time, then you can make a cutout in it for the door.

In addition, you can make inserts in the canvas from glass or any other light-transmitting material, so you will save on the garage during daylight hours.

As you can see, do it yourself up and over gates getting into the garage is not so difficult, the main thing is not even good skills in working with metal and wood, but careful planning and compliance with the dimensions of the garage overhead gates. If everything was done correctly, such gates will serve you for a very long time.

You can install any gate in the garage, including the popular overhead gates. Despite the complexity of the design, there is nothing difficult in installation. If you have a strong desire and the necessary tools, you can make overhead garage doors with your own hands without any problems.

Features of overhead garage doors

Gates that do not open like doors, but go under the ceiling, are assembled from several parts:

  • a skeleton made of durable elements;
  • one-piece sash inserted into the frame;
  • return spring assembly;
  • mechanism for changing the position of the sash.

This design is in great demand among garage owners because it has a lot of advantages.

Advantages

Lifting gates are characterized by the following positive qualities:

  • compactness - the design takes up less space in the garage and next to it;
  • ease of assembly and installation;
  • automatic opening, which can be achieved by equipping the gate with a drive;
  • free lifting of the sash, so there is no need to remove snow before entering the garage;
  • noiselessness, which is guaranteed by a special mechanism for moving the door leaf.

Despite the advantages of overhead gates, some garage owners find compelling arguments against installing them.

Flaws

The garage owner can be forced to change his decision regarding equipping the garage with overhead doors. the following disadvantages this design:

  • low degree of protection from intruders;
  • inability to retain heat;
  • prohibition on frequent raising and lowering of the sash;
  • Possibility of installation only in a rectangular opening;
  • the need to completely replace the canvas if it is damaged.

You can turn a blind eye to certain disadvantages of overhead gates. Some car owners ignore the fact that door design, going upward, is mounted only in a rectangular opening. The fact is that this disadvantage is compensated by the wide possibilities in finishing the canvas. For example, small windows made of glass containing wire mesh in the thickness may be built into the leaf of an overhead garage door.

The principle of movement of the sash (rotary, tilting, folding mechanisms)

The gate, which goes to the ceiling, allowing the car to drive inside the garage, looks like a flat canvas that completely fills the opening. In order for it to rise easily, it must be supported by a rigid frame, securely attached to the wall of the room. The overhead gate leaf moves up or down along the side profile, which acts as a guide.

A special mechanism consisting of springs, levers and rollers forces the canvas to move from place. The sash, which is set in motion by these elements, rises along the guides and goes upward, after which it slowly takes a horizontal position and becomes parallel to the ceiling.

Easy and quick lifting of the canvas up is provided by springs. When the gate is locked, it stretches. And the opening of the door structure brings them into a compressed state. Springs and all other elements of the mechanism for moving a solid gate leaf can be forced to perform their task either manually or automatically.

Opening overhead gates at the touch of a button is achieved by electric drive, which need to be specially equipped with the door structure.

Preparing to install a standard garage door

The first task that a car owner who has the idea of making a lifting gate needs to complete is to draw up a drawing. You won’t be able to do without it, since the final result of the work depends on it.

Drawing with indicated dimensions

A diagram indicating all dimensions is a document that can protect you from making skewed gates. By the way, when constructing a lifting door structure, it is advisable to have on hand not only a simple schematic representation of the gate, but also a plan with its isometric projection.

The dimensions of the lifting door structure should be 10 cm greater than the length of the opening. By adding these centimeters to the door parameters, you will be able to avoid the appearance of gaps between the lifting structure and the walls of the garage. A large room may require the manufacture of gates with dimensions of 6x2.2 m. And the frame itself, created from steel or wooden elements, should be made taking into account the dimensions of the opening.

Having finished drawing up the drawing, you need to arm yourself with a pen and a notebook in order to note in it what will be needed in the process of manufacturing the overhead gates.

How to choose the right materials

To install overhead gates in your garage, you need to prepare:

  • 2 wooden beams having a cross section of 100x100 mm and 120x80 mm, or durable steel profiles;
  • corners 4 mm thick with parameters 4x4 cm;
  • channel 40x80 mm;
  • a steel rod with a diameter of 0.8 cm;
  • 2 springs having an internal diameter of 3 cm;
  • 2 movable brackets;
  • anchor bolts and screws;
  • rollers;
  • cable or chain.

Most of the requirements are placed on the material from which the canvas itself will be made. To create a lifting (it can be folding or folding) sash, boards with a thickness of at least 2.5 cm, corrugated sheets and plastic panels are suitable. You can make a canvas from ordinary sandwich panels. Same good material board shields are considered.

The door leaf of a rising door structure cannot be made from solid massif tree. Otherwise, the sash will turn out to be heavy. In addition, in the rain and snow it will become damp and swell.

If, after making the door leaf, the garage owner intends to insulate them, then he can use basalt wool or polystyrene foam. These materials meet the requirements fire safety. Having insulated the door structure, you can sheathe it with galvanized steel sheet, which will protect metal parts anti-rust gate.

Required Tools

For measurements you will need a metal tape with divisions (tape measure), a building level and a corner. In the future you will need:

  • angle grinder for smoothing metal after welding;
  • welding machine;
  • an electric jigsaw, which is useful for cutting and processing wooden beams;
  • a drill to make holes in materials;
  • a screwdriver for equipping the blade with fasteners;
  • hammer, set of screwdrivers and wrenches.

How to make a lift-and-fold gate structure with your own hands

To make a gate that goes to the ceiling when opened, you will need to perform the following steps in turn:

  1. Prepare an opening for the structure, that is, insert vertical supports into the flooring to a depth of 2 cm, which will be pieces of 120x80 mm timber, and attach them with anchor bolts.
  2. Assemble the frame of the structure, for which it is necessary to install a horizontal beam at a distance equal to the length of the garage door in such a position that it is parallel to the crossbar of the opening.
  3. Weld two guide rails from 4 metal corners, along which the rollers attached to the sash will later pass, and attach them using self-tapping screws and metal fittings to the beams located at the top.
  4. Build the frame of the canvas. To do this, weld square profiles from metal corners, connect them to each other and attach them to the finished box of diagonal beams.
  5. Equip the corners at the top of the frame for the canvas with rollers, for which you need to use a drill and fasteners.
  6. Cover the gate frame with anti-corrosion material using self-tapping screws.
  7. Equip the vertical support beams with movable brackets, installing channels of these mechanisms on them.
  8. Attach to the bottom of the beams, or rather, to the suspended brackets and the ends of the channels using a spring.
  9. Hang the finished canvas on the manufactured frame.

After this, you should take care of protecting the garage from intruders by equipping it with locks and latches. It’s worth thinking about how and with what to insulate your homemade overhead gates.

How to insulate garage doors

The garage can be protected from heat loss if the inside of the lifting doors is covered with foam plastic. This material is characterized by high rigidity, does not absorb moisture and does not allow warm air to escape. The quality of the foam, despite the low price, is beyond doubt. In addition, this material is easy to work with, because it weighs little.

It is first necessary to treat all holes between the frame and the canvas using polyurethane foam. This cunning trick will protect the garage from heat loss through the door structure and the occurrence of drafts. Then you need to coat the gate leaf with a primer or paint that protects against rust. When the coating has dried, you can begin to insulate the door structure.

Polystyrene foam can be laid on metal surface gates or insert battens between the joists. If you like the first option, then the insulation will simply need to be glued to the sash. And when choosing the second method of laying polystyrene foam, the first thing you need to do is create a frame from wooden lining, and only then deal with insulation.

Later, in order for the gate to open and close without difficulty, it is recommended to adjust the spring tension by tightening the nut.

If this does not help, you can change the location where this element is fixed. Lifting gates will tip over easily if they are equipped with a door handle from the outside at a distance of less than 1 m from the ground.

The main condition for the successful completion of work on the construction of overhead gates is the correct preliminary calculations. In addition, in order for the door structure delivered to the garage to cause pride and not regret, you need to undertake its manufacture with construction skills.

Lifting garage doors are a convenient, reliable, practical design for protecting the premises from unauthorized persons. When opened, they take a horizontal position, moving forward slightly, forming a small canopy over the entrance.

  1. tree;
  2. plastic;
  3. metal.

The space inside the door leaf is filled with insulation – polyurethane, which provides effective thermal insulation of the structure.

The door panels, in this case, are connected using hinges. In such products, rollers, couplings and other moving elements are made of metal or plastic; materials that are resistant to corrosion are used for guide rails.

Advantages of this design:

  1. easy to use;
  2. sufficient reliability.

Flaws:

  1. low resistance to burglary;
  2. It is unrealistic to make such a device completely on your own.

To reduce the cost you can:

  1. leave the manual drive, but abandoning the mechanical device worsens the ease of use;
  2. reduce the size of the gate opening - adjust its width and height to the minimum number of panels.

  1. high strength of the product;
  2. the device perfectly protects the garage from unauthorized entry;
  3. silent operation of the gate when the door leaf moves - there are no rollers or guides that could create noise;
  4. It’s quite possible to make overhead garage doors with your own hands. To do this, you don’t have to have special technical knowledge, but their price is much lower; the costs will only be associated with the purchase of the material.

Design disadvantages include:

  1. their installation is possible only in rectangular openings;
  2. the height of the opening when open is reduced by about 20 centimeters;
  3. the solid fabric of the device does not allow repair of individual sections, which, if damaged, requires a complete replacement of the entire element;
  4. the gates have a spring mechanism designed for a certain mass of the product, therefore, if it is necessary to perform thermal insulation, the mass of the insulation should be taken into account: if it significantly increases the total weight of the insulated gate, it will be necessary to install counterweights;
  5. There may be gaps between the frame and the door leaf; they can be eliminated with a rubber seal, but such gates should only be installed in unheated garages.

For the door leaf, it is covered with pressed foam plastic, insulated with polystyrene foam or other heat-insulating materials. For beauty, they can be covered with panels made of plastic or wood.
  • Guides, which serve to rotate the frame around its axis. At the same time, it moves from a vertical position to a horizontal position and back.
  • Compensation springs, which stretch when the device is closed, but remain free when open.

In this type of gate, the opening mechanism can be of two types:
  • The hinged lever or simple one is the most reliable and most popular device, which ensures easy movement of the shield and prevents it from blocking.

Tip: Be sure to carefully adjust the spring tension and ensure high accuracy of installation of the guides.

  • The gate leaf is assembled from boards and covered with steel sheets on the outside.

To do this, two corners are connected, and then welded in such a way that there is an internal space of five centimeters between their tops and welded along one edge.
