Preparing for work

Calculation of material consumption and preparation of walls is the first stage of repair.

I measure the length of all walls;
I multiply this amount by the height;
subtract the area of window and door openings;
I divide the total by the area of 1 roll.

So, foamed vinyl is popular because it masks wall defects. This will make it easier to prepare them before gluing the vinyl sheets.

First, I got rid of the old finish: I cleaned off both the paint and the crumbling plaster. It is easier to glue the sheets onto drywall: it is initially smooth and does not require tedious leveling (if the seams are puttied). After all, wall curvatures of more than 1 cm must be leveled!

Then you need to turn off the electricity for the entire time of pasting and remove sockets and switches so as not to interfere.

Preparation of glue

Usually wallpaper glue accompanied by instructions. By the way, saving on mortar often spoils expensive repairs. So which glue is better? I chose from expensive ones, special for vinyl, heavy materials.

The proportions of the ratio of water and powder strictly correspond to the instructions:

Pour the powder a small amount water.
Stir the mixture for 3 minutes with a regular mixer (I don’t have special attachments for a drill). This home appliance did an excellent job of crushing all the lumps.

Then leave the solution to swell for the time specified by the manufacturer.

Gluing stripes

You only need to cover the wall with glue and leave the canvas dry. So, the question of whether the wallpaper needs to be coated with glue is answered negatively for a non-woven base. This means the process is less labor-intensive, and we also save glue.

Beginners should not rush into work. I recommend doing everything carefully, because the solution that has slightly dried out on the wall can be refreshed, and the unevenly placed canvas can be torn off and glued again.

We coat only a strip of the wall for the first canvas. For the corners, we also use glue to mark the edges of the non-woven base so that the wallpaper holds more firmly.

You need to attach the material from top to bottom, and it was more convenient with an assistant: someone glues it, and someone supports the canvas. It will be especially convenient to work with an assistant if it is meter wallpaper, because they are significantly (twice) wider than the usual half-meter samples.

Then use a roller to smooth the canvas from the center to the edges to squeeze out excess glue and air. Often, when gluing it to the ceiling, part of the canvas comes off, which means that it needs to be coated more.

Try to glue the canvases end-to-end so that vertical tubercles do not form at all points of their connection.

We coat the joints with a concentrated solution, and roll the rubber over them with pressure.

Corners are especially labor-intensive; they should be glued especially carefully and slowly.

At corners, you can use the “into the corner” or “through the corner” technique. For example, on an overlapping 5 cm allowance of the canvas glued close to the corner, glue a strip for the second wall. Then, running a knife over it double joint, connect them.

During gluing, avoid drafts so that the material dries evenly.

Finally, trimming

When the wallpaper is dry, apply a long ruler, construction knife trim off excess fabric: first at the ceiling, then at the floor. Moreover, the bottom can be run directly under the baseboard (wherever possible).

We also apply glue to the canvas with a flat brush.

The absorption time is indicated on the roll by the manufacturer and should be followed with each sheet. Otherwise, one strip will stretch more strongly, the second - less, which will result in a skew.

We start from the corner and from the top, align it vertically (a line drawn with a plumb line with a pencil), then press it in the center with a roller and along the entire length.
We expel the air and glue, roll the edges, moving the roller to the sides from the center. You can smooth it with your hand, but it’s more effective with a roller.

Remove any glue that has come out around the edges with a dry cloth.
We coat the prematurely dried edges with a thin brush.

If the fabric has stretched, when it dries, a gap sometimes appears at the joint. Here we will apply glue again and lightly stretch the wet fabric, because foamed vinyl is elastic.

Vinyl wallpaper takes 2 days to dry.

You can quickly and effectively update your interior using polymer stickers. It is easier to install than a large roll cut. Such samples are especially attractive on plain walls, and even children are happy to glue them in a nursery. This wall accent is inexpensive and bright.

Let's consider whether it is possible to glue with PVA glue. This composition dries very quickly, forming folds on the wet canvas. But it can be used in problem areas- near the baseboards, radiator, under the window sill, if combined with wallpaper (1:3).

Instead of using store-bought primer, you can use heavily diluted wallpaper glue. After priming, be sure to paint the walls with white water-based paint.

IMPORTANT! When choosing wallpaper, it is better to lean toward wider ones, since gluing meter-long wallpaper end-to-end is faster than regular wallpaper, especially since there will be fewer seams, and the pattern in this case will look more complete.

Step 3. What glue should I use to glue vinyl wallpaper?

For each type of wallpaper, a specific type of glue must be used. All necessary information about how to use should be indicated on the roll packaging.

When preparing glue, strictly follow the instructions on the mixture packaging.

Vinyl wallpaper is heavy, so excess water in the prepared glue will negatively affect adhesion: after a couple of weeks, or even hours of gluing, the canvas may fall behind the walls and you will have to start all over again.

You should only buy glue for vinyl wallpaper: use universal adhesives or, even worse, glue for paper wallpaper, guarantee you good result the canvas cannot adhere to the wall.

The best in their class are QUELYD ($5/300 g, consumption up to 5-6 rolls), Pufas ($3/200 g, consumption 25-32 m²) and Methylane ($4/300 g, consumption 32-32 m²). 50 m²). The smell of these types of glue is either absent or weak.

The drying time for each type of glue is also individual, but on average it is at least 12-24 hours. It is recommended to keep the room closed for 48 hours.

Step 4. Vinyl wallpaper: how to glue correctly?

You will need:

bucket;
wide spatula;
sponge;
sharp knife;
pencil;
smoothing brush (or rubber roller);
plumb line;
scissors;
meter;
brush for applying glue;
work surface (table).

Work progress:

The cut canvases are laid out on a flat surface and evenly covered with glue, using the instructions given on the packaging of the manufacturer of the adhesive mixture.

For ease of transportation and storage of pasted canvases, they are folded as follows: one edge with the back side inward is bent by 2/3 of the length, the second by 1/3. There should be no folds when folding the fabric. The canvases are rolled into a loose roll and set aside.

IMPORTANT! If you do not plan to use a particular roll for more than half an hour, after applying glue to it, wrap the roll in cellophane to prevent premature drying of the edges of the wallpaper strips.

On average, wallpaper needs from 5 to 10 minutes to soak in glue (a more accurate figure should be indicated on the roll packaging).

Once the wallpaper is saturated with glue, it becomes more elastic and often changes shape in width. After drying on the wall, the wallpaper will stretch and all unevenness will be removed naturally.

IMPORTANT! If the wallpaper strips are not uniformly saturated with glue or one strip has been in the glue longer than the other, this may affect the appearance stripes (especially if we're talking about About Patterned Stripes: The pattern may be misaligned or distorted due to the vinyl shrinking as it dries.

Also, if you keep the wallpaper in glue, the edges of the strips may stick together and when you try to open the canvas for gluing to the wall, they may tear.

ADVICE: To determine the optimal impregnation time, combine the edges of the strip: if they “move away” when aligned, there was not enough time for normal impregnation and you should wait a little longer.

The walls of a room are rarely strictly vertical, so when pasting, you should not focus on the verticality of the corners. To paste the first strip of wallpaper on each wall, you need to draw a vertical line with your own hands: for this, use a level or plumb line.

To ensure adhesion, the pre-primed wall is also covered with a layer of glue (such a “double” ball of glue is often used when gluing walls with heavy, washable vinyl wallpaper).

The correct way to hold the wallpaper before pasting is as follows:

take the rolled roll soaked in glue in your hands and climb the stepladder to the ceiling (near the vertical location);
bend your left arm at the elbow and carefully unfold the roll, carefully throwing it over your hand;
take the edge of the strip from the larger side and carefully separate the wallpaper sheet (ideally, you will only need to grab the edge and lower the sheet along its entire length so that peeling occurs naturally - under the weight of the weight of the pasted sheet);
the lower third of the canvas, still folded towards the center, must be disconnected after fixing 2/3 of the canvas on the wall.

Although most wallpaper today is glued joint to joint, if you want to cover the wall with an overlap, you need to start from the window: this way, when light falls on the joints, shadows will not appear.

You cannot glue wallpaper in the corners of the room with solid sheets of full width: one way or another, folds will form in the corner over time. The strip for pasting the corner must be cut in width so that it extends onto the opposite wall by no more than 1.5 cm. In order to glue the second part of the strip of wallpaper in the corner, draw a plumb line on a clean wall to a width equal to the width of the glued part of the canvas , after which it is mounted on the wall. This way you will get not only a competent finishing of the corner, but also a strictly vertical beginning for further pasting of the wall.

The seams must be smoothed using a special roller. It is important to take into account that when covering walls with thick wallpaper, strong pressure on the roller can damage the surface of the canvas. Embossed wallpaper cannot be smoothed with a roller.

10. The edges of wallpaper protruding onto the ceiling can be removed in three ways:

with the back of the scissors, run along the junction of the wall and the ceiling, as if smoothing the wallpaper sheet end-to-end, then bend the sheet and, along the formed fold line, cut off the excess material with sharp scissors; glue the sheet to the wall without applying additional adhesive, smoothing out the fresh seam;
to trim the allowance for the ceiling, you can also use a spatula and a wallpaper knife (with the first one, support the canvas at the joint between the wall and the ceiling, and with the second, move it over the spatula, cutting the canvas);
You can carefully trim the wallpaper using a special trimming tire (using it will prevent the glue from getting onto the ceiling and other surrounding surfaces).

11. If you plan to paste wallpaper with a border, you should start gluing the surface of the canvases with decorative tape only after the glue has completely dried, i.e. after 24-48 hours (how long the wallpaper dries is the indicator indicated by the manufacturer on the roll label).

Vinyl wallpaper: harmful or not?

When choosing wallpaper, the question of whether vinyl wallpaper is harmful to human health or not is asked by almost all buyers who have heard about the adverse effects of vinyl covering.

If we are talking about a quality product, then the answer is “no, they are not harmful.”

The big disadvantage of vinyl wallpaper is the result of the biggest advantage of this coating: such wallpaper can be washed, and therefore their air permeability is an order of magnitude less, and they are more susceptible to temperature changes.

The water-repellent properties of vinyl wallpaper are achieved thanks to a special additive: PVC (polyvinyl chloride) or, in common parlance, vinyl.

If the buyer has no individual intolerance to this additive, then there are no contraindications to purchasing and covering walls with such wallpaper. An allergy to PVC is the only thing that is harmful to high-quality vinyl wallpaper.

The composition of vinyl wallpaper is PVC applied to a non-woven base or sprayed on paper.

Silk-screen printing or the so-called “flat vinyl”, “hot stamping vinyl” are among the most expensive types of vinyl wallpaper. Thanks to specific manufacturing technology and additives, such wallpapers give the effect of silk fabric.

Vinyl wallpaper - moisture resistant, and therefore the weight of the vinyl canvas exceeds the weight of paper wallpaper. The size of wallpaper is often reduced to the standard: 10 m long and 0.53 m wide in one roll. However, there are varieties of 60 cm, 90 cm and meter wallpaper.
