What wallpaper to glue in the kitchen. How and what kind of wallpaper can be glued in the kitchen: tips with a photo. Briefly about the types - which is better

Since the kitchen is the most frequently used room in the apartment, many people try to give it a simple look, and aesthetics have to give way to rationalism. It happens that the room, due to its small size, does not allow diversifying the interior with decor. We have to carefully consider the presence in the kitchen of each piece of furniture. Would you like to learn how to wallpaper your kitchen to add some charm to it?

Simple rules to quickly glue wallpaper in the kitchen

What wallpaper is better to choose for the kitchen

The wallpaper colors of the countertops are in harmony with the rest of the interior elements.

Everyone knows that light cold colors push the walls visually, increasing the size of the room. If your kitchen is underlit, opt for warm pastels, and for large-scale kitchens, dark, rich shades of wallpaper are perfect. With their help, you can create a mysterious and subdued atmosphere. Using wallpapers of different colors, you can divide the kitchen into functional areas.

How to choose wallpaper for the kitchen? Many will most likely prefer "washable" or "moisture resistant" varieties. Still, there are not so many “no problem” wallpaper options to choose from among them shades, patterns, style. But the need to use vinyl wallpaper for the kitchen is dictated by our former unsettled life. Were there many hoods in the apartments of Soviet citizens? And were there many varieties of universal wallpaper that did not resemble rubber to the touch?

Now there is no need to use exclusively vinyl wallpaper for all the walls in the kitchen. Serious protection needs only a working wall - an apron. The rest of the walls are no more polluted than other rooms in the house. Be guided by the fact that the choice of wallpaper for the kitchen is wide enough, and you can choose the color and texture that you like the most, even if this wallpaper is “not practical”. After all, you glue them, after all, not for the rest of your life, but only for a few years (until the interior gets bored). The main criteria should be style, harmony and your personal preferences. Don't forget that the kitchen often becomes a place where the whole family gathers, and the color of the walls can have an impact on the atmosphere of communication.

Options for gluing kitchen wallpaper

The main color of the wallpaper and cabinets - white - creates a festive and pleasant atmosphere in this kitchen.

You can take the color of the countertop, cabinets or kitchen backsplash as a basis and choose wallpapers that are close in shade. Another option is when the shade taken as the basis is in the wallpaper pattern along with other tones and patterns.

If you like experiments, organize contrasts in wall decoration. As a basis, tones that are already available in the kitchen can act. For example, quite a bit of white and a lot of contrasting bright colors. If you have used contrasts when decorating furniture, try repeating this combination on the walls, but let the proportion be the opposite. So, if the furniture is 80% light colors, then let it be 80% dark and 20% light in the decoration of the walls. Do not worry that the dark color will "press" on your eyesight, because there are not so many open walls in the kitchen.

Using a geometric pattern (checkered, striped, polka dot), you set a clear rhythm. It is difficult to say whether this method of choosing wallpaper is radical or calm. It all depends on the size of the picture and the degree of contrast. It is better not to paste over the entire kitchen with a cage or peas, but to use such wallpaper in the form of inserts or panels on any wall.

How to glue wallpaper in the kitchen with your own hands

Two people can stick wallpaper quickly and easily

Before pasting wallpaper in the kitchen, you need to prepare the walls. Be sure to remove the old wallpaper. If you don't, chances are high that the new ones will fall off along with the old ones. Or, if the new wallpaper is light and the old wallpaper is dark, the pattern may show through, which is also not very pleasant. Old wallpaper can be easily removed from the walls if moistened with water.

After removing the wallpaper, check for cracks on the surface. If there are, they need to be putty. If the surface is painted with enamel or oil paint, it is necessary to remove it or at least clean the walls with sandpaper.

To wallpaper in the kitchen, you will need a roller to apply glue to the walls, a brush to apply glue to the wallpaper, a brush to smooth the wallpaper on the wall, glue, two damp cloths (one you will wipe excess glue from the walls, the other from the floor) .

Before wallpapering in the kitchen, be sure to check all wallpaper rolls. They must be the same shade. To cut the wallpaper into panels, you need to cut off the first sheet with a margin of 5 cm (drying, some wallpapers come together). Roll out the roll on the floor and align the pattern on the first sheet. In order not to get confused, it is convenient to make an inscription on the back of each panel - “top”. It is better to have a margin of 5-10 cm, this will eliminate the possible difference in height in different places in the room.

If the wallpaper is dense, they should be glued end-to-end, and if thin - overlapped. Wallpaper glue is sold at any hardware store, it only needs to be diluted, following the instructions on the package.

To stick the wallpaper evenly, first mark a vertical line at a distance of about 15 cm from the corner near the window. If overlapping, start gluing from the window, so the joints will not be visible. To draw a vertical line, make a plumb line. Attach any weight to the cord, hold the cord by the top edge and mark a line. It is on it that the first sheet is glued.

Layer on the wall: coat with glue a strip 15 cm wide at the corners, at the baseboards and along the line of the upper upholstery. Lay the cut panels of wallpaper pattern side down on a clean floor and apply glue evenly. Then apply glue to the wall. Lift the sheet by the top edge and align it with the marked line. After gluing the sheet, smooth it with a brush. It is most convenient to glue the wallpaper together. One person spreads the panel, the second - the wall, one smoothes the upper half of the glued panel, the other - the bottom. If an air bubble still forms, it can be pricked with a needle and smoothed out. After that, proceed to sticking the next sheet.

So that swelling does not form on the ledges and in the corners, the wallpaper should be cut and pasted with one panel overlapping another no more than 2-4 cm, and not a whole canvas. In this case, the second canvas must be glued from the corner of the wall, and not from the place where the previous one ended. Washable wallpaper is an exception. They glue the corners with a whole canvas.

Kitchen wallpaper: coating features

Beauty and comfort in the kitchen is very important, but its no less valuable quality is functionality and practicality. Wallpaper plays a big role in this. When choosing canvases for the kitchen, it should be taken into account that high humidity, odors, and fats require durability of the coating and ease of maintenance.

Advice! It is not recommended to wallpaper all the walls in the kitchen; it is better to lay out the most “wet” places with tiles: this is the area of \u200b\u200bthe sink, stove and desktop.

When choosing canvases for this room, it should be noted that paper and textile coatings are not suitable here: rapid contamination will lead to a loss of their appearance. Pasting the kitchen with vinyl-based wallpaper guarantees durability and practicality: such a surface is easy to clean, is not afraid of dampness, and does not fade in the sun.

Liquid wallpaper, which is a special composition, is sometimes used for the kitchen. The dried coating forms an even and beautifully laid layer, which allows you to cover minor flaws in the walls. The surface has no joints, and if necessary, the damaged area is replaced by another. Liquid wallpaper is not afraid of shrinkage, so it is often used in new buildings.

The idea of covering walls with non-woven fabrics seems to be one of the most relevant methods of our time. In this case, the adhesive substance is smeared on a dry wall, then wallpaper is applied here. Such a coating is especially beautiful, it does not tear, does not deform, and masks the irregularities of the base well. However, non-woven fabrics actively absorb moisture and open.

Wallpapering in the kitchen with glass wallpaper is practical, hygienic, absolute safety and elasticity, and multiple painting of such surfaces is allowed.

Despite all the advantages, they are not cheap. Wallpapers on a natural basis - cork, bamboo, linen are durable, pleasant and easy to care for. Ideas for decorating walls with such canvases bring notes of splendor and sophistication to the room. The coating is not afraid of UV exposure, but absorbs odors and requires surface treatment with silicone.

Variety of choices

Covering the walls with wallpaper in light colors will make the room spacious. For dark rooms, it is better to choose pastel tones of warm colors; muted shades are suitable for large kitchens. Decorating the walls with different wallpapers will help divide the room into functional areas. All sorts of combinations and original colors will decorate the room, becoming the highlight of the interior.

Most people for wallpapering in the kitchen choose washable, moisture-resistant wallpaper, often non-woven. However, the main part of the walls here does not need additional protection, with the exception of the working area of the apron and the area behind the battery. The main criterion for choosing should be personal preference, the color of the coating and its texture.

Combinations of wallpapers of different types

Ideas for transforming the interior with wallpaper of various types arose in order to divide the room into zones. So, the recreation area is easily disconnected from the working and residential parts.

To glue a room with wallpaper of different types, you should study certain points:

  • Vertical stripes increase the height of the ceiling.
  • Horizontal lines push the boundaries of the square.
  • An enlarged pattern is used in spacious rooms, a small ornament is suitable for small rooms.

To make the interior bright and harmonious, it is not necessary to be a professional. An important nuance when pasting with canvases of two types is the commonality of style and texture. Light shades are ideal for darkened rooms.

The combination of two types of wallpaper in one room is based on their color combination. Striped wallpapers come in contrasting colors or the same palette with different patterns. Canvases of two types alternate together, collecting a single composition.

Striped wallpapers fill the room with dynamism, they are often combined with monochromatic options. The combination of discreet and bright colors will add high spirits and positive. The combination of two types of canvases - turquoise and orange will increase appetite, and cool colors: blue, green, gray relax and soothe.

Canvases of two types, depicting different surfaces - wooden, stone, bamboo, allow you to achieve an unusual design solution.

Variegated, poorly harmonizing tones of canvases should have the same basis. Patterns and repetitive nuances on such surfaces allow for a commonality in the design. A good combination is the wallpaper of two types of juicy colors successfully with soft shades on other walls.

The secret to the right fit

Wallpaper is glued only on the treated coating. All differences, cracks are covered with putty, the surface behind the battery is especially carefully prepared. It is important that the areas affected by the fungus are treated first, then glue and wallpaper are prepared.

For your information, dense wallpapers can only withstand thick compositions, they are applied especially intensively to the area behind the battery.

  • To ensure that the glue is evenly saturated, the smeared coating is left wrapped for 5 minutes.
  • Work starts from the window, paying special attention to the area behind the battery.
  • To provide the wallpaper with perfect verticality, a clear alignment with a mark with a masking cord will help.
  • The glued base is carefully smoothed out, expelling air bubbles. The area behind the battery is treated especially carefully, because even a slight increase in temperature will lead to peeling of the web.

What to consider when choosing

No one will argue with the fact that the kitchen is the main room for every housewife. It is here that they spend most of their time cooking, after which the whole family meets at the table. Therefore, the design should be given sufficient attention. The photo shows wallpapering.

And this is understandable, because the owners will not buy wallpaper in dark muted tones if they prefer light, intelligent colors in the interior. The same goes for texture. In addition, it should be noted that such a moment as quality cannot be overlooked either. Wall coverings for the kitchen should have the following properties:

It is worth noting that on the market and in modern supermarkets, there are a great many wallpapers suitable for the kitchen, and moreover, the price range is far from always considered the main criterion. The photo shows a selection of wallpapers from a modern building market.

In this case, much depends on the manufacturer. On the one hand, a wide range makes it possible to stick wallpaper to your liking, and on the other hand, such a variety, on the contrary, makes it difficult to choose. Design tips here may not be superfluous at all, because every owner wants the kitchen to be beautiful.

Inappropriate wallpapers

Before you buy wallpaper for the kitchen, it is advisable to familiarize yourself with the performance characteristics and recommendations of specialists, and for this you need to study each type in more detail. So, first we give a list of wallpapers that are not suitable for kitchens:

  • paper - a completely unsuitable option to glue it in the kitchen, despite the fact that it is quite economical. Unfortunately, they are short-lived, quickly fade in the sun, and the only thing you can count on after purchasing them is a quick repair;
  • acrylic wallpapers with embossed or embossed patterns are more suitable for living rooms and bedrooms, as they get dirty very quickly in the kitchen - this has been proven by practice. Moreover, it will be impossible to wash them even when using detergents. In addition, they are considered not strong enough;
  • natural wallpaper, which contains vegetable fibers - coatings with insufficient moisture resistance, which have the ability to absorb moisture and odors. The exceptions are such types as bamboo and cork, provided that they are treated with varnish.

This photo shows a sample of paper wallpaper with acrylic coating.

Choice of colors for the kitchen

When carrying out facing work, it is important to choose the right color scheme for finishing materials. It should be in harmony with kitchen furniture and other decorative elements that will be involved in interior design. It is better to entrust the selection of the color of the kitchen to professionals who, using a special computer program, can not only make virtual repairs, but also furnish any room with furniture.

Wallpapering a kitchen is not a very complicated process that you can handle yourself. It is only necessary to choose the right material, prepare the necessary tools and surfaces, follow the technology of cutting and gluing canvases. Renovating the walls is a great way to quickly and relatively budget to change the interior of the kitchen.

Briefly about the types - which is better?

First you need to decide on the material suitable for the kitchen conditions and the desired design.

What to choose in terms of practicality? There are the following types of coatings:

  • Paper;
  • Non-woven;
  • Vinyl;
  • Textile;
  • Fiberglass wallpaper.

Each of these materials may look beautiful, but, of course, they have different indicators of strength and moisture resistance.

On each roll you will find a marking by which you can determine how suitable the wallpaper is for the kitchen. As you can see, some of the icons are underlined - it is desirable that your wallpaper has these characteristics.

On, durable, light and moisture resistant. In short, our view is:

  • The best choice: . The canvas lays neatly on the walls, looks beautiful and is easy to stick on your own, and besides, this material is distinguished by high moisture resistance, plus, if your walls are not perfectly even, this option is most desirable.
  • Worst choice: it is better not to paste over paper and textile wallpaper, as they are poorly cleaned and quickly deteriorate in the kitchen.

Choosing a design - 7 main secrets

A lot can be said about the topic of choosing wallpaper in terms of color and pattern, because this issue really needs to be carefully thought out. After all, we are our own designers, which means that you will have to figure out the colors, prints, and the right combinations with furniture and walls in other rooms yourself. The color and design of the canvases is selected depending on the shape, size of the room, its level of natural light, and your preferences.

Here are the top 7 wallpaper design rules you need to know:

  1. For well-lit rooms choose cold shades;
  2. North-facing kitchens are decorated with wallpaper in warm colors;
  3. decorate with light wallpaper without complex patterns. One accent wall is allowed.
  4. it will become wider when decorating walls in light colors and a longitudinal striped pattern;
  5. showing striped walls or a vertical pattern;
  6. Win-win and the most versatile colors that always look beautiful: white, beige, gray, muted blue;
  7. Solid wallpaper is not only a tribute to fashion and always appropriate restraint, but also the best option for sticking with your own hands quickly and easily, because they do not require patterns to be joined.

Advice! You can cover the walls with different wallpaper, creating interesting interior accents. To avoid problems of choice and doubts, if you want to create such a design yourself, without the help of a designer, you need to choose from any one collection, where all the companion options have already been carefully selected.

We prepare the wall correctly

Work always begins with the preparation of the walls.

Step 1. A qualitative result cannot be ensured if you do not first remove the old wallpaper and putty the wall. All this is not difficult to do with your own hands.

To remove old wallpaper from the wall, use a metal spatula and a spray bottle (wet wallpaper is easier to remove from the wall). Old coatings - peeling paint and whitewash - also need to be removed.

Step 2. After that, the walls must be leveled with putty. Vinyl and non-woven wallpaper can be pasted over surfaces with minor defects, but large irregularities, cracks, etc. must be eliminated.

Advice! Keep in mind that under one layer of putty will be enough, and for vinyl and especially paper, a more even surface will be required.

Step 3 The last layer of putty must be sanded.

Step 4 And now you need a primer. After such operations, your old walls will not be recognized, and all coatings will be glued to them without difficulty.

To learn more about how to properly putty and level the walls under the wallpaper, see the following video:

Cooking Tools

When deciding how to hang wallpaper in the kitchen, you cannot ignore the issue of preparing tools.

To quickly cut canvases, you need:

  • Square;
  • Metal rulers are long;
  • Wallpaper knife with sharp replaceable blades;
  • Good scissors;
  • Yardstick.

And for gluing wallpaper you will need:

  • A spray bottle with water, a metal spatula - to remove old layers of wallpaper;
  • Plumb, level (normal or laser);
  • Rule, profile for marking vertically;
  • Rollers or brushes for applying glue to panels and walls;
  • Wide, narrow rubber rollers for smoothing fabrics;
  • Bucket and tray for the adhesive mixture;
  • Water, clean soft cloth or brush.

Let's get started - cut the canvas and prepare the glue

To understand how to glue wallpaper correctly, you first need to figure out how to cut a roll. The following cutting options are available:

  1. Cut along the wall, after applying the roll in the right place and marking.
  2. Cut on the table, once measuring the height of the ceiling and adding 10 centimeters to it in reserve.
  3. Wallpaper with a pattern is cut taking into account the step of the repeating pattern - as a rule, this value is indicated on the packaging, but you can check by finding the repeating elements.

Advice! If you are cutting several canvases at once, then do not forget to sign them in the order in which they will be glued to the wall.

There is another important point - the cultivation of glue. The adhesive composition is selected in accordance with the type of wallpaper material and diluted with careful observance of the instructions in cool water. The composition is mixed until it acquires a jelly-like consistency. More about the types of glue and its preparation:

How to paste walls - step by step instructions

So, how to glue the wallpaper? The walls are already fully prepared - the old coatings were removed, and the surface was puttied and primed. After the primer has dried, choose the options for applying glue (depending on the type of material used):

  • In the case of paper-based vinyl wallpaper, canvases are smeared;
  • For gluing wallpaper on a non-woven base, glue is applied to the walls.

If you need to apply glue to the canvases, and not to the wall, then prepare a clean place for them in advance.

The glue is applied in an even layer on the wallpaper without gaps, after which the canvases are folded in half and left for several minutes. Particular attention should be paid to the wall - in the place where the wallpaper will be joined (after all, modern materials are glued end-to-end, not overlapped). The beginning of work should be carried out from the center of the room, if it has 2 windows or from the corner of the wall where the window opening is located.

The first canvas is glued just in the corner - so that it goes 5-6 cm onto the adjacent wall. Before gluing the first canvas, a vertical line must be marked along the construction plumb line or level - this line is drawn with a pencil along the wall, as shown in the photo above. They begin to glue the wallpaper from above, aligning the canvas exactly along the drawn vertical. First, the top and edge of the material are exposed, and for the time being, only a rag or brush is used for pressing, but not a roller. After the upper part of the canvas is glued, open the lower part and also carefully align to the plinth.

After the canvas is leveled and fixed, it is pressed in a herringbone pattern, first in the center, and then to the side, moving from top to bottom.

If a micro-gap is formed between the canvases at the joints, they can be easily moved. It will be easier to do this if the canvas is smeared along with the wall. At the final stage, you need to additionally lubricate the joints and walk along them with a short rubber roller to fix them.

This is followed by quality control of gluing - the wallpaper should fit snugly against the wall without air bubbles. After the whole room is pasted over and the canvas dries out a little, you can cut off the excess formed at the top and bottom. It is important to use a sharp knife here so that there are no burrs at the cut point or cut evenly with scissors at the bend, as shown in the following photo.

And how to glue the last canvas? Measure the width of the not yet glued section of the wall and add 1.5 - 2 cm to it (photo 1). Cut the canvas to the desired width. Now dock this canvas with the adjacent canvas, glue and iron the seam, and then in the corner vertically iron the overlap formed with a rag or brush (photo 2).

Carefully cut off the excess at the corner, top and bottom. Wipe off the remaining glue with a sponge. Keep in mind that the resulting pattern may not line up perfectly, but it's not very noticeable in the corner.

How to glue wallpaper near the door, window and in the corners?

In order to glue wallpaper beautifully and professionally with your own hands, you need to pay special attention to working near windows and doors in the kitchen. It is not difficult, the main thing is to know how to do it according to the rules and common sense.

How to paste wallpaper near the window?

When you get to the window, glue the next cut as usual, that is, the canvas will step over the window opening. Make horizontal cuts on the canvas, bend and iron the paper as shown in photo 1. If the wallpaper cut does not reach the window, then it is necessary to glue an additional cut. Cut the canvas with a cutter so that it perfectly frames the window sill (photo 2). Cut off all excess and iron (photo 3). Now glue the upper part of the window opening as shown in the photo.

The side walls and top may not be pasted over. Just glue the pieces of the canvas, joining the pattern, and, if desired, install the corners along the edges of the window opening.

How to wallpaper the wall near the door?

When you get to the door, place the sheet as you normally would when entering the door. Cut off the excess (the piece that covered the door) with scissors, leaving a few centimeters of excess paper on top and sides (photo 1). Then make a small cut diagonally as shown in photo 2.

Trim off excess paper at the top of the door frame and at the bottom. Use the edge of the door body as a guide. Iron the wallpaper along the door.

Now let's decorate the wall above the door. Hang a short piece of canvas over the door. Dock the pattern and cut off the excess at the ceiling and top of the door (photo 1). Paste the other side of the door in the same way as described above. But do not cut off the excess vertically (along the edge of the door body) until you glue the next canvas, so that you can then correct the bumps.

How to glue wallpaper in the corners?

Inner corners are in any room. You need to glue them as shown in the photo instructions below.

But protruding corners are not in all kitchens, but in many.

We glue the border and wallpaper near sockets, switches, batteries

So, how to stick wallpaper in the kitchen with your own hands, in general, we figured it out. And how to properly wallpaper the walls near the battery, sockets and switches? Let's figure it out.

How to glue wallpaper near the battery?

Start wallpapering the wall above the radiator as usual, and after gluing the canvas to the edge of the radiator, let it hang over the surface of the radiator (photo 1). Then cut the wallpaper so that it extends slightly beyond the radiator (photo 2). Now glue them with a roller behind the battery (photo 3).

How to decorate the wallpaper, where the sockets and switches are located?

  • Turn off the lights. Hang the paper on the switch panel. Mark the position of the corners of the switch as shown in the figure.

  • With a utility knife, make a diagonal slit from one corner to the opposite corner, you should get four triangular flaps. Fold these patches along the edge of the wall and cut off the resulting unnecessary triangles along the crease.
  • Loosen the switch or socket panel and pull it out a little through the hole you made.
  • Iron the paper under the switch panel. Then install it back and remove excess glue. Do not turn on electricity until completely dry.
  • Draw guide lines with a pencil on the wall at the height where you want to glue the border and stick it slightly over the adjacent wall. (photo 1);
  • On the second wall, glue the border in the same way so that there is an overlap in the corner, and then carefully cut the top layer of the border exactly in the corner (image 2).
