Wooden benches. Do-it-yourself bench made of wood: step-by-step master class with photos. Garden benches made of wood: choosing a style

A bench is an item that should be on every personal plot. However, it is not always possible to allocate funds to purchase a metal bench. Therefore, you can make a bench with your own hands from a profile pipe.

Advantages and disadvantages of profile pipe

The profile pipe can have different shape sections:

  • oval;
  • diamond-shaped;
  • square
  • rectangular.

It is made of carbon and low-alloy steel, therefore it is very often used in both civil and industrial construction. This type of pipe is easy to cut, weld and bend. You can make it beautiful garden gazebo, swing and sliding gates, children's swings, carousels, different kinds fences and other small architectural forms for personal plot. Including a bench.

The professional pipe has:

  • increased level of resistance to large physical and mechanical loads;
  • quite reasonable price;
  • light weight of the finished bench structure.

At the same time, it is very easy to work with her.

Pipes with a round (oval) cross-section have a high degree of resistance to mechanical loads, so they are best suited for making a metal yard bench. It is recommended to choose thin-walled pipes thickness from 1 to 4 mm, as they are easier to work with at home. The material is inexpensive, and the metal structure will be quite light.

A significant disadvantage of such a pipe is its susceptibility to corrosion, so the benches will need to be regularly painted with oil, alkyd, epoxy or polyurethane paint with preliminary priming and removal of the old coating and any rust that has appeared. But if you properly care for such a product, it will serve you for a long time.

Tools and materials for work

Metal pipes are not the only material that will need to be used to make a bench with your own hands. You will need:

  • pine boards for constructing the base of seats and backs;
  • powerful welding machine;
  • pack of electrodes - 3 mm;
  • angle grinder (or hacksaw);
  • powerful drill (for drilling wood and metal);
  • file or sandpaper;
  • precise level;
  • tape measure or regular meter;
  • plane for grinding work;
  • paint and primer for metal;
  • safety glasses (mask for welding work) and gloves;
  • wood paint (you can use varnish or stain);
  • reliable hammer;
  • large pliers;
  • wood bolts with nuts.

To bend the pipes you will need a special “Snail” tool, which can be used as a regular brake disc from a car. It will not damage the material.

How to make a metal frame for a garden bench with your own hands

Before you start making a bench of any type, you need to carry out preparatory work In particular, it is recommended to study pipe bending and welding technology in advance.

Metal pipe bending

In order to create bent elements, you need to plug one end of the pipe with a stopper, pour fine sand into it, and then close it on the other side. Then place it in the bending device, pressing it between the protrusion on the brake disc and the pin, and then bend it at the desired angle.

If the pipe does not bend well enough, you can use a blowtorch and heat the bend.

For the manufacture of various elements For a bench, it is best to take pipes with a round or oval cross-section, as they lend themselves best to bending.

The sequence of making a bench without a back

A bench without a back is a very simple design, so to make it you will need to make three rectangles that are connected to each other with pipes that act as a seat.

To make a bench you will need to take:

  • metal square or rectangular pipe 11 meters long (rolled section 30x30 mm);
  • 2 pieces of profile pipe, 2.3 meters each;
  • 6 pieces of 60 cm;
  • 6 pieces of 45 cm;
  • 8 wooden boards 6 cm wide;
  • 24 bolts with nuts.

To make an ordinary bench without a back, you need to weld 3 pre-prepared rectangles, and then connect them together with two guide pipes, which will serve as a frame for the seat. Further work should proceed according to plan:

  1. Long support sections must be placed horizontally, and shorter ones must be mounted vertically.
  2. In the process of welding cut pieces of pipes, it is necessary to maintain the angles of the supports, since they must be exactly 90 degrees.
  3. After all welding work has been completed, it is necessary to thoroughly clean all seams with a special grinder or a regular file.
  4. Then the seams must be well primed.
  5. After the frame is welded, 8 holes (symmetrically located) need to be drilled on each of the supports to attach the boards.
  6. To prevent rust, the bench frame must be coated with metal paint.
  7. It is recommended to impregnate wooden boards with stain.
  8. If desired, wooden boards can be replaced with pipes rectangular shape. They just need to be welded to the structure and also painted with anti-corrosion paint.
  9. To ensure that sharp corners do not interfere, the slats can be placed in a specially prepared metal frame. You will need 1.2 m of pipe.

How to weld a bench frame with a small backrest

You will need:

  • profile pipe with a cross section of 25x25 mm (8 m);
  • pine boards (thickness 30 and 25 mm) for the seat and backrest.

To construct the frame you need to prepare in advance:

  1. Profiled pipe - 1.55 m. To create a jumper between two supports.
  2. 2 bent pieces of pipe, 78 cm each. Supports for the back of the bench.
  3. 2 pieces of pipe, 35 cm each. To make the base for the seat.
  4. 2 pieces of pipe 39 cm each. For front supports.
  5. 2 pieces of pipe 20 cm each. To strengthen the front supports.
  6. 4 steel plates 40x40 mm. For the manufacture of stands for supports.
  7. 2 bent steel strips of 45 cm each. For connecting future supports.

To make the seat you will need:

  • 3 pine boards: length - 1.6 m, width - 6 cm, thickness - 3 cm (for the base of the seat);
  • 3 boards: length - 1.6 m, width 6 cm, thickness - 2.5 cm (for the back);
  • 24 bolts with nuts.

The work of making a bench consists of several stages:

  1. First you need to weld the crossbar and two pieces of pipe 35 cm long. The jumper should be located exactly in the center of each of the pieces and at an angle of 90 degrees.
  2. To this structure it is necessary to weld two bent pieces of pipe 78 cm long. Welding must be done at the bend point.
  3. Then the front elements must be welded to the workpiece supporting structures. In this case, the location of their connection should be 9 cm from the base of the bench.
  4. In order to increase the strength of the bench, the front supports must be connected by welding to a pipe, which will serve as a transverse jumper.
  5. Next, you need to weld 2 arcs between the supports and secure them to the ends of the legs. The finished product must be well sanded in the areas of welding seams.
  6. Then the metal structure must be primed and painted with a special anti-corrosion paint.
  7. On the finished structure, it is necessary to symmetrically place wooden boards, which will serve as the basis for the seat.
  8. Before attaching the boards, they must be treated with varnish or stain. The boards are attached to the bench structure using special bolts with round flat heads. Thicker and stronger boards are used for the bottom, and slightly thinner ones for the back. If necessary, they can be painted in any way. oil paint. If there are no wooden boards, then you can use the same ones for seats. metal pipes with a rectangular cross-section.

For convenience, you can make metal armrests on the bench. To do this, you need to take two pieces of pipe 75 cm each and simply bend them at an angle of 90 degrees, and then weld them on the sides metal frame. Sand the seams with a sander or file. The armrests can also be painted.

If you make rounded soles at the legs, then you can also swing on such a bench.

Finishing the bench after its assembly

After the entire structure is assembled, you can simply paint it with special paint for iron. It is recommended to treat with varnish or stain wooden planks seats and backrests, and then the bench will acquire a beautiful natural color. This bench will look great on any garden plot. The decor is chosen taking into account landscape design.

You can sew soft, comfortable pillows and bedspreads for the backrest yourself. Children and elderly people will find it very comfortable to sit on them on warm summer days.

Whatever design of the street bench you choose, profile metal pipes can significantly reduce the cost of the finished product, and at the same time its appearance and strength will remain at the highest level. Such benches will look great on the garden plot of a country house or cottage.

A garden bench is an indispensable attribute of relaxation, necessary in any summer cottage. It can be very simple (consist of one board with supports) or have an unusual shape and design, becoming part of the landscape design and decoration of the yard.

Since the construction does not require special skills, many owners prefer to do them themselves. If you also like to make crafts for your home and are planning to set up a recreation area in your garden or yard, we suggest you familiarize yourself with how to make a bench with your own hands using available materials.

Types of benches

Rest bench

The first criterion by which they differ is the ability to move them from place to place, that is, they are portable or stationary. There are also differences in the design of the benches; on this basis, the following types are distinguished:

  1. Bench without back. This option is easy to implement, although not the most convenient to use.
  2. Bench with a back (folding or regular). This design is classic and is used more often than others. It is especially convenient to have a bench with a folding backrest that can be lowered onto the seat when it rains, thereby keeping it dry.
  3. Circular bench. It is usually arranged in the garden under shady trees. Due to the considerable seating area, circular benches are perfect for a large family or a group of friends.
  4. Decorative bench (with flower beds, made of non-standard materials or unusual shape). The best decision to decorate the area - an unusually decorated bench. Another advantage is the ability to use the most various materials(stumps, logs, wheels from an old cart, etc.).

When deciding on the type of bench, you need to take it into account functional purpose and, in accordance with this, select the structure and its location. For example, it is better to equip a bench for relaxation and privacy with a comfortable backrest and place it inside the garden or in another place from which it opens beautiful view. And near the entrance to the courtyard you can limit yourself to a simple bench without a back; it is ideal for taking a short break from the road or putting the bags you brought on it.

Bench made of pine timber

Pine timber is an excellent material for a bench

Pine is an inexpensive type of wood that is easy to process, which explains its popularity. Let's look at how to make a bench from pine timber, using the example of a design with a back. Our bench will be spacious and will allow several adults to sit on it at the same time. To make it you will need a set of tools, which includes:

  • electric plane;
  • axe;
  • drill;
  • hacksaw;
  • screwdriver;
  • saw;
  • roulette.

The bench will rest on two connected pieces of timber, which in turn are attached to paw-shaped legs. The beams are filled with ribs that serve as the basis for the seat and back, and the top of this frame is sheathed with sanded boards.

The first step is to saw off two 1.7 m long pieces from the timber for the beams and two more 60 cm pieces for the legs. Next, the beams are placed in the center of the legs and secured with nails and special staples (they can be made independently from wire with a cross-section of 6 mm).

When the support is ready, you should cut off blanks for the ribs, 3-4 pieces for the seat and the same amount for the back will be enough. They need to be given an ergonomic shape using a hacksaw and an ax, then sanded. The ribs of the seat and backrest are connected to each other with 120 mm nails, tightened with staples and nailed to the supports. To extend the life of the wood, it is recommended to coat the frame with acrylic paint.

Finished design

While the frame of the bench dries, we cut bars 2 m long, 10-15 cm wide and 2 cm thick for the seat and back. The blanks will need to be processed with a plane and laid on the frame, secured with self-tapping screws. It is advisable to varnish the surface of the wood or treat it with a water-repellent compound. The resulting bench, despite its considerable weight, can be moved to any convenient place on the site.

Bench made of oddly shaped driftwood

After uprooting old trees, the question arises - how to dispose of the remaining stumps and snags? It turns out that it is very easy to make a bench with your own hands from such waste. Thus, you will solve several problems at once - clear the yard of debris and get original garden furniture without spending practically anything except free time.

Bench made of driftwood

Driftwood is ideal for creating benches with a backrest. All you need to do is pick up the curved branches the right size and diameter (at least 15 cm), clean them of bark and excess knots, and then sand them. The resulting blanks are connected into a single whole using nails or self-tapping screws. Then the structure needs to be treated with an antiseptic, varnished, and the unusual bench is ready.

Carved bench with armrests

carved garden furniture emphasizes the good taste of the owners and creates a special atmosphere of comfort. Such benches are classic and will always look appropriate, both on the veranda and in the garden. Below we will tell you how to make a carved bench with your own hands.

The bench model in question is a portable structure, the peculiarity of which is a comfortable back and armrests. Its sides will be decorated with figured slots, the back and seat can also be covered with carved patterns.

Drawing of a shop with dimensions

To make a bench you will need to prepare the following materials and tools:

  • boards;
  • PVA glue;
  • paint or yacht varnish;
  • screws;
  • milling machine;
  • drill and jigsaw;
  • screwdriver;
  • lathe.

All the details of the bench are first made of cardboard, and then, based on the templates, they are cut out of wood. Let's start with the sides. For them, you need to make 2 identical parts, designed to fasten the seat and backrest, in which holes are drilled in the center using the cutting thread method, forming a trefoil. The sides of the parts are decorated with semicircular recesses, and their bottom is decorated with a pattern that partially repeats the trefoil. All patterns are cut out with a jigsaw.

The supports that give the structure stability are made of timber at least 4 cm thick. The material should be processed with a milling machine and then sanded, moving precisely in the direction of the wood grain. The edges of the supports and sidewalls should also be milled.

For the seat and back, a thinner board is suitable (allowable thickness - from 2.5 cm, width - 18-20 cm). The optimal length of the bench for this design is approximately 1.2 m; accordingly, the boards should be the same length.

Design option for a carved bench

To assemble the bench you will need a leg, as well as armrests and stands for them. Fastening of the listed parts of the bench is carried out using bosses located at the ends of the parts (protrusions with a diameter of 2.5 cm), by aligning them with recesses on opposite fragments.

Now all that remains is to connect all the parts, gluing them with PVA and securing them with screws. Having assembled the bench, the surface is sanded with sandpaper and covered with two layers of varnish or painted.

Stationary bench made of gabions

A gabion bench is a reservoir made of metal mesh, filled with stones and equipped with a seat. You rarely see such structures in our area, but in Europe they are already quite popular and decorate the landscapes of many areas and squares. The unusual appearance is not the only advantage of gabions; they are also easy to implement and very inexpensive. We invite you to familiarize yourself with information on how to make a bench from gabions.

Gabions as a base for a garden bench

The filling for the gabion is usually stone - sandstone, diabase, limestone and other similar types. You need to choose a specific filler depending on the desired decorative properties, for example, limestone will make a light bench, diabase will add dark gray shades, and sandstone will make it brighter (red, green, yellow). If there is no need to save money, then it is better to choose stones that have already been hewn, since they are easier to lay than unprocessed ones.

The lattice box that will hold the stones should be purchased ready-made. Typically, for such benches, a mesh made of durable galvanized steel is used, and its individual fragments are connected to each other with special spirals (included in the kit).

The assembly sequence is as follows:

  1. The parts of the box are laid out on the ground in the selected location.
  2. The sides are connected to the bottom with spirals. This process is simple and does not require the use of additional tools.
  3. The side parts are fastened together. For convenience, you can first lightly screw them with wire.
  4. Stones or other decorative material are placed inside the resulting box.
  5. The lid is secured to the structure with spirals.

Box assembly

To prevent the bench from sagging, it is advisable to strengthen the sidewalls with additional jumpers attached to hooks or install a diaphragm inside. You can screw boards to the finished box or simply put a soft seat on top.

A simple bench made of unplaned boards

If the designs described above seem too complicated or such materials are not available, then you may be interested in how to make a bench with your own hands from an unplaned board. The model is very simple, but at the same time comfortable - a portable bench with a backrest.

The boards should be processed with a plane

The main material is unplaned boards, which should be pre-treated with an electric planer. Bench sizes may vary, but optimal height for her - 90 cm. Manufacturing begins with cutting out the rear legs. To do this, draw a figured bench leg on a blank of a suitable size and cut it out with a jigsaw. Then we trace the first leg on the next piece of board and cut out the second part.

The back and front legs are connected by a rectangular piece of board, the length of which is equal to the width of the bench seat. To securely fasten them, you will need to cut grooves in the parts of the legs. We proceed as follows - we cut through several parallel, closely spaced grooves, remove all excess with a chisel, so that grooves are formed. We place a rectangular fragment of the board in them and fix it with self-tapping screws.

We have two sidewalls that need to be connected by transverse strips (front and back), also mounted on self-tapping screws. Now all that remains is to mount the seats and backrests onto the frame. The structure is almost ready, but before use it is recommended to varnish it, otherwise after 1-2 seasons the bench may begin to deteriorate.

Even simple homemade bench can decorate your yard

Of course, novice craftsmen will hardly be able to do all the work perfectly at once. But don’t be upset if your bench doesn’t turn out as beautiful as in the picture. The main thing is that the design is reliable, and small flaws can always be hidden with original design. Don’t be afraid to experiment and create something new, because making a bench with your own hands means adding a special flavor and comfort to your yard that the same type of factory products cannot provide.

No one will argue that a bench is simply a necessary attribute for any summer cottage. There are a great many types of garden benches, but in this article we will look at a very simple classic version of a bench designed for 2 people, which is not difficult to make with your own hands. The bench should be strong and not heavy; it can be easily moved by two people to any place on the site.

Below you will find a working 3D model of this bench, which can be rotated in all directions, as well as drawings of the bench parts from which it will be assembled.

So what do we need?
Since you will be doing it yourself, you need to stock up on the following tools and materials:

Tools

  1. Circular saw (you can get by with a simple hacksaw for wood).
  2. Planer (if you use unplaned boards).
  3. Drill or screwdriver (with drills and bits).
  4. Measuring tool (tape and corner).
  5. Wrench.
  6. Paint brush.
  7. A grinder or hacksaw for cutting a threaded rod to size.

Materials

  1. Edged board 100*40 mm.
  2. Edged board 100*25 mm.
  3. Furniture screws or threaded rod with a diameter of 8-10 mm:
  4. Nuts and washers for the selected screw size.
  5. Self-tapping screws with a countersunk head for fastening the elements of the back and seat of the bench.
  6. Self-tapping screws with a turnkey head for fastening the power strut - 4 pcs.
  7. Abrasive sandpaper (you can use a drill attachment, or ideally use a surface grinder).
  8. Protective impregnation for wood.
  9. Wood putty for sealing screw heads.

After all the elements of the future garden bench have been sawed and planed, you can begin assembling it yourself. And below are her isometric drawings with dimensions.

BY SIZES:
I adapted the model of this bench to the sizes that are often found in lumber at our sawmills, but this nasty but is always present. When preparing parts, rely on the main (overall) dimensions, because unplaned material can have a spread of up to 5-8 mm. Accordingly, you will have to make adjustments to the dimensions of your structure.

Drawing of a garden bench made of wood 1400 mm wide.

Assembling a garden bench

  1. Assembling the sides of the bench.
    We drill holes for threaded connections. You can make a hole in the wood with a special drill if you want to recess the caps and nuts. To make it easier to work, you can first fix the entire structure of the side of the bench with clamps or thin nails (screws).
  2. We secure the sidewall structure with screws and nuts (a washer should be placed under the bolt head and nut). Do not tighten too much right away; you may have to move the entire structure further for better stability.
  3. We perform the same operation with the second sidewall.
  4. Connect the two sides of the bench using a spacer-tension element (below).
    Secure it with large self-tapping screws.
  5. Secure the seat and back elements with self-tapping screws using a screwdriver. The gap according to the drawing between the boards is 5 mm (use, for example, nails or screws of appropriate thickness as a spacer).
  6. Tighten all threaded connections.
  7. Apply wood putty to all recessed heads of the screws securing the seat and back of the bench.
  8. Sand all over with abrasive sandpaper wooden surfaces so as not to plant a splinter and smooth out the putty. All external corners can be rounded.
  9. Apply protective impregnation or paint on all surfaces in two layers with intermediate drying.
  10. Voila! After drying, the DIY garden bench is ready for installation.
  • Lumber dimensions are nominal. When purchasing boards, add at least 10% to the total footage for possible losses.
  • To save lumber, start cutting boards with the longest elements.
  • The width of the garden bench can be made at your discretion, just keep in mind that a larger width will cause the seat boards to sag under the weight of the body and the structure will have to be strengthened.
  • Whether to install the bottom board of the bench back is at your discretion.
  • To minimize accidental bruises and injuries, file or cut off all sharp corners of the seat and backrest elements.
  • If lumber of natural moisture (not dried) is used to make a garden bench, then the dimensions and gaps may change during drying and it is better not to varnish it until the wood is completely dry.

Wood structures have a certain disadvantage. The material itself requires constant care, and in this case The tree is also in contact with the soil; it is necessary to water the plants periodically. To make a bench More practical, wooden boxes can be replaced with concrete or stone cabinets. You can make concrete flower beds yourself or purchase them in a store.

For the seat, you should use treated boards or half a rounded log. The choice of raw materials depends on the style of the garden or patio design. It is recommended to secure the seat metal corners, fixed to concrete using dowels, and to wood using through bolts or self-tapping screws.

Rice. 1-2. Bench drawing with wooden flower boxes: 6 - installation dimensions of the seat frame; 7 - reinforcement of the bench structure; 8 - installation of seat slats; 9, 10 - installation of the box

Flowerpots with dwarf trees or decorative bushes can be used as supports. The only, but very important requirement is that the container must be very durable. A hole is cut into the seat in the shape of a flowerpot in the place where the legs of benches are usually located. The size of the hole should be sufficient to create conditions for the plant to grow and care for it, however, it should not exceed the size of the container. Essentially, a board seat is placed on top of the planters and is held in place by gravity and the weight of the occupants.

Garden bench in ethno style

Ethnic and rustic design styles are often used in interior design. Vacation home, cottage or dacha is a great place to create an eco-friendly and natural corner suitable for a family holiday. This design can be continued in the garden. For this it is enough with make a bench with a back from logs (Fig. 1) and other natural materials.

Helpful advice! To build the structure, you can use logs with or without bark. Whether to process the material or leave it in its original form depends on your wishes and the design of the site.

Benches, made from logs, are distinguished by their originality and environmental friendliness

The principles of making a garden bench from a log

To form a seat, just saw the tree trunk lengthwise. This can be done exactly in the middle (in the diameter zone) or by moving the saw closer to the edge (in the middle diameter zone). The back is made from a thinner tree trunk, or you can cut it closer to the edge. As a result, this element must be thinner and lighter than the seat part.

Rice. 2. Garden bench made of logs in the courtyard of a country house

The legs can be made from leftover logs. They are connected to the seat part using metal pins. This is done like this:

  1. In the parts that need to be connected, holes are made for the pins in the appropriate places. The diameter of the holes should be slightly smaller than the diameter of the fastener.
  2. The pin is driven into one of the holes approximately in the middle of its length.
  3. The second part to be connected is placed on top of the free edge of the pin and is also driven in. In this case, the blows fall not on the pin, but on the wood.

Ethnic and rustic styles are great for decorating a personal plot

The fasteners are driven in using a sledgehammer or hammer. Since wood is structurally quite soft material, hammer blows may damage its surface. To avoid this, you need to place an unnecessary board under the instrument.

Pins ensure reliable connection of all parts. To strengthen the fixation, you can install 2-3 pins.

Ethnic style in garden benches construction ideas

In ethno style, you can create a design with a non-standard design. A highlight could be, for example, making a bench using curved branches of different diameters. Before assembling the product, these branches are processed and sanded. In other words, the bark is removed from them, and then the surface is sanded with sandpaper. To assemble the seat must be used unedged board. It is processed in a similar way.

Various options wooden benches created in ethno style

Note! All elements of this design have rounded shapes, and the seat boards face forward.

If you have a wicker fence at your summer cottage, you can use the same design option with some modifications. Short seat boards can be replaced with long ones by placing them lengthwise. The back is formed according to the principle of weaving from branches of medium thickness that bend well.

Rustic bench will become a unique object in the garden plot

To make a wicker back, you do not need to have any special skills. You may not end up with a very neat result, but that's not necessary. The back should be simple and unobtrusive; rough weaving will only increase it decorative properties. The branches can be placed tightly or, conversely, you can leave gaps between them so that your bench can “breathe.”

Bench - an alternative to a garden bench

Despite the absence of a back, this diagram (Fig. 3-1) for making a bench looks quite attractive due to the characteristics of the material from which it will be made. The design itself has a very simple structure, so anyone can handle the technology of its creation.

For the legs you will need a rounded beam. If you have logs with a small diameter, you can save on purchasing material and trim them yourself. The original appearance of the bench is obtained due to the fact that the bars are stacked one on top of the other and fixed. The result is beautiful supports for the product.

Rice. 3-1. The procedure for making a simple wooden bench: 1 - drawing up a design drawing

Calculation of parameters and required materials

The height of the bench can be adjusted to suit your needs. This indicator also depends on the diameter of the timber that will be used in the work. To calculate the amount of material, you need to determine how many bars will be stacked one on top of the other to form the required height of one of the legs.

Size chart:

In our case, we will need 5 bars, the length of which is 0.45 m. Calculation formula: 5x0.45 = 2.25 m. Based on this, for the construction of two supports we will need 4.5 m of timber (2.25x2). The seat will consist of five boards 1.2 m long. To make it, the following amount of material will be required: 5x1.2 = 6 m.

Rice. 3-2. The procedure for making a simple wooden bench: 2 - cutting wood for the legs of the bench; 3 - drilling holes in the parts of the legs; 4 - preparation of boards for the seat; 5 - processing the edges of the seat parts

Helpful advice! To round the edges of the beam, you can use a cutter or purchase ready-made profiled material. Its cost is higher, but profiled timber is much more convenient to use.

Initial stage: preparation of material

First, prepare the boards for the seat. The material is cut into required amount boards of appropriate length and processed. Sharp corners should be rounded. To do this, use the capabilities of a router or grinder. If you do not have such a tool at hand, it will be enough to sand the edges with sandpaper.

Rice. 3-3. The procedure for making a simple wooden bench: 6, 7 - marking the parts of the legs; 8 - drilling holes at designated points; 9 - applying a protective coating to the seat parts

Sanding with sandpaper is a long and labor-intensive process. To make your work easier, you can order the material to be sanded at a sawmill. After the boards are prepared, they need to be opened with a varnishing compound. It can be a completely transparent varnish or a composition with a tint (the choice of topcoat is up to you).

The bars intended to form the legs of the bench are placed tightly next to each other so that their edges form a straight line. Using a pencil and a square, mark the areas where the fasteners will be installed. The lines should be distributed along the entire length in increments of 7-10 cm.

Assembling a garden bench: installing fasteners

Metal pins will be used as fasteners. An alternative replacement for them can be dowels made of wood. For installation of fasteners, holes are made, the diameter of which is slightly smaller than the diameter of the pins, and the depth is half the length of the pin.

To fix the parts, the fasteners will be driven into one of the bars, and the next element will be pushed through the hole on top of it.

Photo: a bench without a back can be used not only for sitting, but also as a table

Helpful advice! Assembling the structure using pins - reliable way fastenings To increase the strength of fixation, you can use an adhesive during installation, but this technique will make the structure non-removable.

The pin connection is also used in the process of creating according to drawings DIY garden benches made of wood, the design of which is completed with a backrest. A high-quality result can only be achieved if all the holes are located strictly above each other. As a result, all parts should form an even edge line when assembled.

Wooden table and benches painted in White color, form a cozy dining area in the garden

After drawing the marking lines, you need to measure the distance from the edge, which should be the same. It is recommended to create a template for these purposes. It is enough to take a piece of the strip, the width of which is 1.5 cm. It will serve as a kind of limiter. In other words, the holes will be separated from the edge by a distance equal to the width of this strip. Place the template exactly along the edge line and mark the intersections with the existing perpendicular markings.

The installation of the pins should be carried out in a checkerboard pattern, so you should not place the holes at each intersection of the lines, but every other one. Holes are also made on the other side of the bar. They should be staggered in relation to the holes that were made earlier. As a result, when connecting the legs to the seat, there will be a pair of pins for each bar.

The final stage of building a wooden bench with your own hands

From a technological point of view, the previously described type of connection can be considered correct. However, its installation scheme is quite complicated for a person who does not have the necessary skills.

There is a simpler way to fasten the structure:

  1. The bars are stacked on top of each other.
  2. The folded parts are fixed with clamps.
  3. In progress through holes at three points (in the center and along the edges).
  4. The parts are fastened through the holes with a long pin (do not forget to place washers under the nut and head).

Photo: original bench made from an old wooden bed

The seat boards are then nailed to these legs (from the top) or you can do a pin joint at this location.

Helpful advice! To hide nail locations, prepare a masking compound from a mixture of very fine sawdust and wood mastic. Choose mastic that matches the color of the shop. Apply this mixture to all joints. After drying, the surface should be sanded.

The idea is simple board benches attached to a tree in the garden

When the assembly of the structure is completed, grind all parts. Their surface should be as smooth as possible. After this you can apply finishing coat. For these purposes, use a varnish or wood paint intended for exterior use. It is better if the topcoat is translucent. This way you can leave the natural grain of the wood visible.

Garden bench: drawings and photos, for making it yourself

Bench due to the presence of a backrest, it has a more convenient design than a bench. You can lean on it and relax your back. The capacity of such products may vary, but usually the drawings garden benches made of wood with your own hands are made for 2-4 persons. This is done for the reason that a long structure requires the installation of additional support. As a result, the process of creating a product becomes more complicated. In fact, there is enough space for 2-4 people, so you can limit yourself to making the simplest structures.

Due to the presence of a back, the bench has a more comfortable design for sitting compared to a bench

Garden bench with back: drawing for manufacturing

To make your own bench with a wooden back for this project (Fig. 4), you need to acquire the following tool:

  • drill;
  • a set of drills;
  • hacksaw;
  • plane.

Note! The design is intended for installation in the garden, on a balcony or terrace.

Benches built from wood, fit harmoniously into any landscape

It will take you no more than one day to complete all the work on creating the bench. The main material will be used square block, made from pine. Its cross-section parameters are 6x6 cm. Twenty boards will also be required. Before cutting these boards, they should be planed until parts with dimensions of 5.8 x 5.8 cm are obtained.

Bench for a summer house: instructions for making

Bench assembly from pine bars is carried out in the following sequence:

  • Using dowels and adhesive, we assemble the legs for the U-shaped sides. Then, using the same fastening method, we fix slats (5.8x2 cm) and bars (3.5x3.5 cm) on them, mounted on the sides;

Rice. 4. Drawing of a wooden bench with backrest for two persons

  • to mark the locations of the counter holes for mounting dowels, use a marker;
  • connect the sidewall and the longitudinally located rail. In order to mark the position of the sidewall, a 2 cm thick spacer should be used;
  • secure all elements while drilling holes with clamps. This will allow you to achieve precise matching between the connected parts of the structure;
  • before you execute final assembly, sand all elements well.

The last stage of construction is the application of a protective agent and finishing coating.

For a longer service life, wooden structures require treatment with a protective agent and application of a finishing coating.

Garden benches made from pallets

From available materials such as pallets, you can create an interesting bench design (Fig. 5). It can be installed not only in the garden, but also on the terrace and even inside a country house. For work you will need three pallets.

Manufacturing stages:

  • We divide one of the pallets in half. These halves will subsequently become the back of the product. The cutting must be done so that after assembly the parts of the back and seat form a geometrically correct shape, and all the edges coincide;

Rice. 5. Manufacturing procedure benches made from pallets in six photos

  • We knock the other two pallets together using nails. We attach the back halves to them;
  • a mattress of the appropriate size should be placed on top of the structure. You can use pillows from an old sofa, after replacing their upholstery, or sew new ones. You can also place several small pillows on the backrest.

Usage wooden palletsinteresting way creating original garden furniture

Helpful advice! You can leave the mattress lying flat or secure it with straps. For greater functionality, wheels can be added to the design.

Drawing of a garden bench "Transformer"

To make the structure, you will need to purchase pine lumber.

Materials for work:

Features of manufacturing a transforming bench

Following step by step instructions, you can create an interesting bench, the design of which can be transformed into a table with two benches (Fig. 6).

Main stages bench making:

  • Having created the supporting parts according to the drawing, attach 3 boards to one of them. These boards will be used to form the seat. Do not forget to step back from the end part by 5 cm. You need to install 4 self-tapping screws in each board. Two of them will fix the seat to the support on one side, the remaining ones are intended to fix the seat to the other support (on the other side of the product);

Diagram with installation dimensions transformable benches

  • For each nodal assembly area, you will need to install 4 fasteners;

Helpful advice! When assembling the units, apply wood glue to these areas. Adhesive composition will increase the fixation strength and durability of the entire structure.

  • after all the parts are prepared for work, the legs that support the back and seat should be sawed off at the end at an angle of about 75º. Using self-tapping screws designed for working with wood, connect the legs in pairs with the middle bars. The optimal length of fasteners is 5 cm;

Rice. 6. Drawing for creating a transforming bench: 1 - kinematic diagram of the transformer in the “table” position (1 - position limiters B (pipe 20×20 mm, length 35-49 mm), 2 - support rod); 2 - part C (pipe 40×20 - 2 pcs.); 3 - connecting jumpers (pipe 20×20 mm). D - for external bench, D1 - for internal; 4 - parts B, B1 (pipe 40×20 mm). B1 is mirrored in relation to B; 5 - bench leg (4 pcs.), where: A - steel pipe 40×20 mm, 1 - jumpers (pipe 20×20 mm - 4 pcs.), 2 - support rod

  • Next the back is done. During the transformation process, it turns into a tabletop. Find the longitudinal edge of the backing board. Its length is 32 cm. Three boards 150 cm long need to be attached here. The distance from the end in this case will already be 8 cm;
  • the boards are mounted so that a gap of 1 cm is formed between adjacent elements;
  • in the support board you need to make 3 holes, the diameter of which is 0.8 cm. It is better to perform this procedure in advance. These holes will be used to fix the back of the bench in a horizontal position.

One-piece wooden structure for the garden, consisting of a table and benches

The final stage of construction of a transforming bench

To create the rotation axes, make 2 holes in the top of the back leg. The backrest will be fixed to the base of the product using a pair of M8 bolts.

One of the holes made will be axial, the second will be normal. To simplify the operation of the bench, equip the bolt in the area of the axial hole with a nut with 6 edges; for the second, a wing nut is suitable. Her antennae should be bent back. Due to this simple manipulation, the fastener can be turned/wrapped without the use of additional tools, but only by hand force.

The key element in the patio is a wooden bench with a backrest

Upon completion of all work, you need to check the design for functionality. Place the backrest in an inclined position and secure it with bolts. Remove the fastening element from the hole and move the backrest to a horizontal position. To fix it, place the bolt in its original place and secure with a nut. The design is completely ready for operational use.

While creating garden benches You can experiment and create a fantasy. The main thing is that the product is durable and practical.

Bench – required element any summer cottage. Today, such structures perform many important functions: from their direct use before giving the garden unique design.

Many owners of suburban areas prefer to build benches themselves, since this simple task will not take much time and money.

There are several basic materials that are used as the basis for constructing benches.

Wood

The most popular option is wood. It is believed that it is from this material that the most aesthetic designs are obtained.

Due to the universal aesthetic characteristics of the material, wooden benches fit perfectly into the landscape of any garden. It is important to consider that the benches are always in the open air. Therefore, it is necessary to choose those types of wood that are characterized by maximum resistance to atmospheric conditions.

These include: hazel, oak, cherry pine, and larch. For additional protection the material is coated with a special varnish.

Metal

Metal is popular for the production of benches for many reasons: durability, practicality, resistance to precipitation, ease of use. As optimal option Openwork designs with interesting patterns are most often made for the garden. As an alternative, you can stick to minimalism.

Stone

Stone benches are impressive and monumental. Main materials: granite, marble, quartzite. In some cases, rough stone is used to create a unique design, in others, stone with a smooth surface is used.

Plastic

Plastic is the most affordable convenient option. It is considered more seasonal and budgetary than aesthetic and decorative. However, when correct design plastic bench, it can become a garden decoration. Colorful pillows, lanterns, flowers and much more are often used for decoration.

Types of benches

Garden benches are traditionally divided into several categories. The criterion for division is location.

They are usually installed near the threshold, which determines the choice of material. Design experts insist that the appearance of the front bench should match the exterior of the country house. Thus, if the structure is made of stone, then the bench, accordingly, should also be made of stone.

water bench

The main purpose is to be able to spend time comfortably near a body of water. For the construction of structures, it is recommended to choose waterproof materials - artificial or natural stone.

Can be located virtually anywhere in a summer cottage. Plastic is usually used as a base, as it is lightweight and easy to maintain.

An indispensable option for hardworking summer residents. Garden benches are installed so that the owners of the site can relax comfortably while working in the garden. To ensure aesthetic pleasure that accompanies relaxation, the structures are located next to flower beds.

This variety can also be called a “solitude bench.” The fact is that it is customary to place them in the most remote places of the garden so that a person has the opportunity to hide from prying eyes. A popular material for manufacturing is wood.

Seasonal bench

This is a foldable design that is lightweight. This makes the task of moving the bench from one place to another much easier: summer period– in the shade, in autumn or spring – in sunny places. The optimal material is plastic.

DIY wood bench

There are many different types wooden benches. We'll look at a few of them.

Standard wooden bench

Materials:

  • slab - a board with bark on one side - 2 trimmings one and a half meters long;
  • bars - 2 pieces;
  • cuttings of bars - 2 pieces 15x20 centimeters.

Step 1. We dig two holes and level them in depth.

Step 2. Align the angles between the posts and bars so that it will be comfortable to sit on the bench later.

Step 3. We nail the bars with nails at 200 millimeters.

Step 4. Bury the blanks.

Step 5. Compact.

Step 6. Nail the back to the posts.

Step 7. Nail the back to the bars.

Step 8. Treat the wood with special enamel or varnish.

The described option is an ordinary country bench, which acts more as a functional option than a decorative element.

List of materials:

  • suitable boards – cedar is best;
  • a simple pencil;
  • roulette;
  • saw;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • nails;
  • hammer;
  • polyurethane glue;
  • plant pots;
  • priming;
  • plants.

Bench manufacturing technology

Step 1. Arm yourself with a calculator and tape measure, calculate the dimensions of the bench.

Step 2. Sand the boards so that there are no nicks, burrs or other defects left on them.

Step 3. Cut out 46 pieces of equal length (about 50 centimeters each).

Step 4. Set aside 6 pieces to the side for further construction of the turret.

Step 5. Assemble the support boxes from 40 pieces.

To do this, we place two segments parallel to each other, and then place two more segments on top perpendicular to them. In this way we lay out the remaining planks to form a turret. We secure the corners with glue and self-tapping screws for greater strength. Each drawer requires 20 slats.

Step 6. We take long boards and begin to make a frame for the future structure. To do this, we lay the boards on their sides and secure them in the middle with a crossbar.

Step 7. Attach the frame to the support boxes using self-tapping screws and glue.

Step 8. We make a “turret” from the remaining 6 segments. To do this, we lay the planks on one of the support boxes in the same way as we did earlier.

The last row must be made continuous using short pieces that are inserted between the walls of the boxes.

Step 10. If desired, we make “window sills” on the top row by adding four sanded boards with oblique corners.

Step 12. Take long boards and cover the future seating area with them.

Step 13. Place pots with plants in the turrets.

It's very beautiful and simple design, which does not take up much space, but contributes to pleasant leisure time.

We will look at the production technology of the simplest country bench without a back. It only takes a few hours to assemble the bench. The basis of this design is a profile pipe.

Set of tools:

  • welding machine;
  • profile pipe;
  • steel corner;
  • Bulgarian.

Step 1. Determine the location of the future bench and carry out the appropriate calculations. The standard length of such a bench is 120 centimeters.

Step 2. Using a grinder, cut three metal blanks 120 centimeters long. They will act as a seat.

Step 3. Lay the pieces evenly on a flat surface. You can use a stove.

Step 4. Take a steel corner and cut off two cross members.

Step 5. We apply the crossbars perpendicular to the workpieces, stepping back from the edges about ten centimeters, and weld them.

Step 6. We weld two bench legs to the corners, the length of which is adjusted according to the wishes of the owners of the site.

Step 7. We weld a transverse bar to the legs, stepping back from the bottom of the seat by about 20-25 centimeters.

Step 8. From the scraps of the corners we make two crossbars.

Step 9. We weld these cross members to the bases of the bench legs.

Step 10. Apply a protective coating to the metal.

Step 11. Install the bench.

If desired, you can modify the structure by welding railings and a backrest to it. Bright paint will give the bench an interesting appearance.

Construction from scrap materials

First of all, you need to decide what materials will be used as the frame of the structure. It can be:

  • stones;
  • wooden pallets;
  • bricks;
  • bottles.

Also during the work you will need following materials: clay, straw, water, sand, paint, brushes.

Preparing a frame from pallets

  1. Fill the bottles with soil.
  2. We lay them in several layers on a bed of sand and gravel.
  3. We tie the bottles with wire.

Preparing clay solution

Stage 1. Mix straw with sand and clay.

Stage 2. Add water to the mixture and stir the contents of the container.

Stage 3. Using your hands, roll small balls from the solution.

Stage 4. We apply the balls to the pre-prepared frame, thus forming the outline of the future bench.

Stage 5. Cover the finished bench with polyethylene so that the solution gradually dries and does not crack.

It is believed that clay benches can last up to a hundred years without losing their attractive appearance. Besides, it's enough economical option, which will certainly add originality to any garden.

Choose the option that will fit well into your garden plot and will bring maximum satisfaction.
