In this article we will consider the question of how to make a crossbow, using the constructive knowledge of crossbow construction.

To do it yourself reliable crossbow, great hard work and desire are not enough. It is also necessary to have a small knowledge base, material and technical. Of course, you can take a piece of wood and a car spring, and with the tenacity of a maniac, start sharpening, planing, drilling, sawing, focusing approximately on the found images of the crossbow design. But the result may be that the crossbow will be too heavy, inconvenient, and in general the result may not be what you dreamed of and what you wanted.

What to do? First of all, you should determine exactly what kind of crossbow you need to make. After all, there are a large number of types of these throwing weapons and each has its own unusual technical features, which determine completely different techniques for manufacturing and using crossbows in practice.

Further, you need to accurately assess your capabilities in terms of equipment, with which you will make crossbow parts with your own hands. And, finally, think carefully about where and what material you need to take to create this or that structure.

Well, let's start by replenishing the knowledge base about crossbows and their types, because without this it is simply impossible to move forward. Let's see first general device this weapon.

In most cases, any crossbow has the following mechanisms and parts:

  • Crossbow guides and stock;
  • Shoulders and bow;
  • Trigger;
  • Tension device;
  • Arrows (bolts);
  • Bowstring.

Now we need to touch a little on the classification of crossbows. All of them are classified according to certain criteria.

Classification according to shoulder tension level:

  • Tension level up to 20 kg. Such crossbows are often used for entertainment and recreation; of course, they are not suitable for any serious testing. The targeted shooting range is not very long (approximately 15-20 meters);
  • Tension level 20-55 kg. Such crossbows allow the trigger mechanism to be cocked using muscular force, without any devices. Their sighting range is approximately 60-80 m;
  • Tension level is more than 55 kg. Such crossbows are serious weapons that require special cocking devices to tension the bowstring.

Classification according to the type of onion used:

  • Monolook. It can be homogeneous, made of steel or fiberglass, or composite using specific types of wood;
  • Shoulders + pad. To secure the arms of the bow in this case, a block is used - an intermediate device. Such a crossbow is quite convenient for transportation, because easily understood.

Classification according to the type of shoulders used:

  • Block - with the use of rollers and eccentrics, as well as having a main and 2 additional bowstrings;
  • Straight - the shoulders in a non-bent position form a straight segment;
  • Traditional - S-shaped beam type of bend.

Classification according to the crossbow stock used:

  • A traditional screw-type stock with a solid butt, neck and fore-end;
  • Stocks of the old type, which are made following the example of medieval crossbows;
  • Sports stock with a slot in the butt and a pistol grip.

Classification by tension method:

  • Muscular type of tension - has a system of levers, a stirrup, a special hook;
  • A goat leg is a single-arm lever;
  • Gate - the device has a worm gear and a rack;
  • Block tension with multiple rollers.

Now that you have some understanding of how crossbows work, it's time to decide which design is right for you based on your technical capabilities. In other words, make sure you have the ability to use wood and metalworking machines. It is worth believing that with only a drill, a plane and a hacksaw, you are unlikely to be able to make a high-quality crossbow with your own hands. Many parts can only be made by an experienced turner. Even if you have detailed drawings of a crossbow on hand, you will have to use maximum creativity, effort and ingenuity to do everything technically competent and beautiful.

How to make a crossbow for your physical. options

Let's start making a crossbow with our own hands from the stock. To begin with, let's take suitable wood. We need a type of wood that will not chip or warp, and will be sufficiently tough. The following species fully meet these parameters: walnut, birch, ash, beech. Undoubtedly, such a tree can be found in any hardware store in our country, so no problems arise.

For a stock, a board 30 cm thick is quite suitable as a starting material (it is not recommended to take more than that - there is simply no need for it). Now you need to decide on the size of the bed. The figure below shows how to choose its size to suit your own physical parameters.

Where:
A– these are your basic physical dimensions:
L– Distance from the bend of the elbow to the end of the index finger;
B2– width of the chest;
H3– distance from the pupil to the collarbone.
B– bed dimensions:
Lп– the length of the stock, which is measured from the front segment of the trigger to the heel of the butt (about 5-15 mm longer than half the back of the butt);
Lps– length from half the back of the butt to the trigger (distance L);
– the length is false from the toe of the butt to the trigger (+/- 15 mm shorter or longer than the distance to half the back of the butt);
A– the distance in front of the butt from the bend of the stock to the bottom;
O– the distance from the heel of the butt to the bend of the stock to the bottom (dimensions “a” and “o” are made depending on the H3 indicators).
IN– retraction of the bed and change to the side, which depends on the width of the chest (B2):
Op– the distance from the heel of the butt to the outlet of the stock;
He– the distance from the toe part of the butt to the outlet of the stock.

The stock must be measured from the beginning of the trigger to different points, which are located on the back of the butt. To adjust the bed to the size of your body, you need to use the picture above. But the average sizes are:

From the heel to the beginning of the trigger – 36-36.5 cm;
From the hook to the butt toe the distance is 36.8-37.2 cm;
To the midpoint, which is located on the occipital plane – 35.6-36 cm, “a” – 4-4.5 cm, “b” – 5.5-6 cm.

Having taken measurements of your body, focusing on this table, you can choose optimal sizes for your bed, which will suit you almost perfectly. Difficult? It’s not scary, as they say - “It’s hard to learn, it’s easy to fight.”

After which you can proceed directly to making the bed itself. To begin with, it is recommended to cut out a template from paper. On it we draw a bed according to the dimensions that were measured and determined using a table. Sketches of different crossbow stocks are available on the Internet.

We will tell you how to make a crossbow stock, shoulders and trigger mechanism step by step in other articles. In this case, our task is to determine the dimensions of the crossbow parts we need and the materials from which they will be made.

Now let's see where to start creating the crossbow's shoulders. And we start, as usual, by choosing the material from which the shoulders will be made. It seems to me that many people immediately determine what kind of crossbow will be made: with a monobow or with a compound bow.

The material for creating the shoulders should be as follows:

  • If you have a sports bow at your disposal, you can use the shoulders from it. You can go to some sports section where you can get decommissioned bows completely free - they will still be thrown away. They, however, can be used for weak crossbows, with a tension of up to 20 kg;
  • Fiberglass or textolite is sold in regular construction stores. The tension force is also low - up to 20 kg. Typically used to create crossbows for recreational purposes;
  • Car spring - look in your garage, in your neighbor's and in a junkyard. In principle, finding her would not be a problem - if only there was a desire;
  • Carbon fiber, fiberglass, various composite materials - again, we go to construction stores.

Any store has similar materials, and at fairly affordable prices.

The highest quality crossbow arms come from composite materials and fiberglass. Below is a drawing showing the dimensions of their fiberglass arms with a tensile force of up to 40 kg.

To create a monobow, you can use a car spring. The string is attached to it using wheels or pulled onto a trident.

With your permission, now it’s time to finish the review of the sizes that you can use to create a crossbow with your own hands. In the following articles we will look in detail at what triggers can be used for a crossbow. We will also look at the drawings of trigger mechanisms that are common in crossbow manufacturing today.

Based on materials from the site: sekach.ru

A very popular weapon now is the crossbow. Despite its complexity, a crossbow can be made at home. In past ancient times it was used as a formidable weapon. Nowadays the crossbow is used in shooting range sports at short and medium distances. Nowadays you can buy everything, including a crossbow. But it’s much more interesting to do it yourself. For those who are skilled in craftsmanship and know how to use machines and tools, this will not be difficult.

Previously we described how to do it, if you are interested, take a look.

For a crossbow we need a wooden blank and iron.

The wooden blank is cut to these dimensions.

We take a spring plate measuring 650×100×8. Use an angle grinder to cut off the excess little by little. We make an arc measuring 35 mm - this is in the middle and with edges of 18 mm.

Using an emery machine, we reduce the edges from the middle to the edge, reaching 5 millimeters in thickness. We stretch a steel dart onto the arc (or a cable). We fix it firmly. In order not to interfere with the arc bending exactly in the middle, we place a round piece of wood. Simultaneously with tensioning, we look at the tension and tension gap.

These dimensions are the basis for our work on making a crossbow at home.

We saw the iron blank and get a part that will be the main one in our crossbow - the hook, it is also called the “cat”.

To make a lock we need a trigger and a sear. On top of the axle we make a hole into which the strip spring bolt should fit, which secures the pin from moving

Next we will make the lock and body.

We measure very carefully and make holes for the pins.

Then we make protection for the trigger and measure it to the wooden base.

Cut a hole for the lock.

Inserting the lock

We attach the rear sight. We make a dovetail and solder an aiming device to it. Depending on the heating temperature during bluing, this can be done with POS or PSR.

It is necessary to drill holes in the arch; this must be done with a Pobedit drill. All this is necessary to attach the clamps.

We sharpen the rollers to the required sizes.

We cut the clamps to the size we need and then fasten the clamp to the bow of the crossbow.

Making stirrups

I clamp the string (cable) with a vice. Advice, do not try to rivet, you need to squeeze!

In the process of production.

We glue a metal strip in the form of a groove.

Using cutters and wood chisels we make the stock.

Entertainment like this homemade crossbow made of wood is interesting for both adults and children. True, for the latter the entertainment is not safe, and therefore they need to play only under the supervision of adults. Making such a crossbow is not difficult, and it will shoot with ordinary iron plugs.

Materials

To make a wooden crossbow with your own hands, prepare:

  • pieces of wood;
  • bandage cord;
  • wood glue;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • wooden dowel;
  • ice cream sticks;
  • pencil;
  • iron bottle caps;
  • hacksaw or saw;
  • jigsaw;
  • sandpaper;
  • drill;
  • drill.

Step 1. The first step is to make a bow for the crossbow. To do this, take a strip of wood 0.64 cm thick with parameters 1.9 x 30.5 cm. The starting material is deciduous tree, V in this case it became poplar. Soak the strip in water overnight and then press it with clamps to a round, flat surface, leaving the workpiece in this form until completely dry.

Step 2. You need to drill three holes in the rounded strip. The two on the sides should be 0.3 cm. The hole in the center should be 0.6 cm.

Step 3. Secure the strip in this form using a bandage cord.

Step 4. Place a wooden block into the bow of the crossbow and secure it with wood glue and a self-tapping screw.

Step 5. Pull the bandage cord as tight as possible and at this point, put a mark on the central bar of the product with a pencil.

Step 6. Make a notch in the place marked with a mark.

Step 7. Drill a hole in the notch and insert the dowel into it. Cut and process the lower part of the block, giving it the appearance of a real weapon.

Step 8. Now you have to make the lock and trigger. Use durable popsicle sticks for this. Use sticks to make two parts shown in the photo. For the trigger, you just need to cut off one of the rounded ends, and for the retainer, cut off the third part and glue three cut strips in a stack at the bottom. Their length should reach the middle of the latch.

If you don’t want to buy an expensive crossbow (and prices sometimes exceed $1000), you can make a crossbow with your own hands. It's not as difficult as it seems at first glance. The design of the crossbow is quite simple. A crossbow can be made from what is at hand, replacing missing materials with similar ones. A homemade crossbow is quite suitable for target shooting.

General view of a crossbow that you can make with your own hands according to drawings

The design of this crossbow uses the developments of manufacturers in the field of weapons. The drawings show a crossbow of a block design. If you follow the instructions and observe all the dimensions, you can make a high-quality and good crossbow with your own hands, even at home

General diagram of a homemade crossbow assembly:

To begin with, it is advisable to carefully study the drawings of the crossbow and begin assembling it yourself. Making a crossbow with your own hands is not an easy task. But this increases interest in work! After all, a homemade crossbow can bring great joy and respect to the performer.

Crossbow structure: stock, shoulders, butt, trigger mechanism, sighting devices, block system. It is used to make a stock natural wood, solid or laminated timber, mainly hardwood. The exact dimensions of the crossbow can be seen in the drawings. You choose the shape of the crossbow yourself, guided by the convenience and ergonomics of the stock and the desired image. When choosing, you must also consider whether you can make such a form correctly.

Crossbow shoulders and deck drawing:

The use of a small arms stock can significantly reduce labor costs for the manufacture of a crossbow. The main thing is to choose the right size. The mark left by the barrel in such a stock must be hammered wooden blocks, firmly placing them on epoxy glue. The butt and under-barrel pad of a crossbow can also be made of wood. The stock will be attached to the guide and serve as the basis for the trigger mechanism.

Butt drawing:

Offered for DIY assembly, the crossbow has a block design. This allows you to compensate for the load when cocking the bowstring and maintain power. Compound crossbows are the most popular among hunters because... You can carry a crossbow in a cocked state for quite a long time. Horton actively uses this design in the production of its crossbows.

Drawing of block assembly parts:

Please pay Special attention for processing arrow guides and bowstrings. The clarity of their finish greatly influences shooting accuracy. The guide lines must be perfectly straight and smooth. Optimal choice there will be polishing on milling machine and subsequent processing sandpaper with fine grain. Next comes polishing the guides. You can see the dimensions of the boom guide groove in the drawings. The crosspiece, with the shoulders attached to it, is installed at the end of the stock. It is usually made from an aluminum billet. Wood can also serve as a suitable material.

A crossbow sight must consist of a rear sight and a front sight. You can also install an optical sight on the crossbow, providing a mount for the aiming bar. Vertical adjustments are made entirely, mounted on the cover of the trigger mechanism, and horizontal ones - with a front sight mounted on the bracket of the elastic element.

There can be many design options for sights and sighting devices for a crossbow, depending on the possibility of manufacturing, the availability of ready-made sights from conventional weapons (air rifles), etc.

It should be borne in mind that the flight path of a crossbow arrow (crossbow bolt) is quite high, so the rear sight must be installed significantly higher than the front sight. The angle of elevation of the aiming line depends on the weight of the arrow, the tension of the string, the shooting distance, etc. In our crossbow at a distance of 50 m it is approximately 6°.

Convenient are the designs of the rear sight, which allow it to be removed or folded during transportation. It will also be convenient if the rear sight can be adjusted manually by raising or lowering the bar. Thus, you will be able to target the crossbow under different conditions (distance to target, weight of the arrow).

The crossbow, the manufacture of which is described above, is designed for shooting bolts with a diameter of 8 mm and a length of 450-470 mm. You can easily make them yourself from a duralumin tube with a wall thickness of 0.5 mm. The tip and liner are attached to the bolt in front, and the feathering is attached to the back, just as they do for archery. It should be borne in mind that the shank of a bolt for a crossbow, unlike an arrow for a bow, should not have a cutout for the bowstring; it should be flat. It can be carved from wood in the form of a cork and inserted into the end of the tube, having previously been lubricated with glue.

Each of you, since childhood, knows what bows are and what they look like. Let's say even more. You've probably tried to make a bow yourself more than once, and then, holding a homemade weapon in your hands, chased cats through the trees and scared the girls. Some people ran with a bow, while others found it easier to make a slingshot, especially since the principle of their operation is almost the same. Moreover, even a girl could make a slingshot.

How to make a simple crossbow with your own hands

For this all you needed was a suitable stick and an elastic band. Then they tied an elastic band in a forked stick, took a small pebble and went to hunt sparrows. To successfully shoot from a slingshot, you had to take a small pebble, place it in the center of the rubber band, pull it with all your strength and quickly release it, in a similar way to shoot from a bow.

photo. Homemade crossbow

Today we just cheerfully remember our childhood pastimes, homemade weapons that brought so much joy, though adult life We replaced toy bows, slingshots with more modern and serious weapons - crossbows, hunting or sports bows. Let's just say that the design is practically the same, only more advanced, with many important elements, sighting and block mechanisms.

You can buy such small arms at any specialized store, but our desires do not always coincide with our financial capabilities. Therefore, we are not at all surprised that many fans of shooting with crossbows and bows want to make homemade small arms with their own hands. Despite the fact that this is not so simple, since you need to have the correct crossbow drawings, it is much more economical. Well, if you feel that you can make a crossbow yourself, then why not try it!

What is needed to make a homemade crossbow?

Bows differ from crossbows in their design; they are a little bulky and inconvenient to transport, which is why most hunters give their preference to the second weapon option. But if you decide to make a crossbow with your own hands and are ready to get to work, even now, we must stop you. After all, in order to make such a weapon, desire and hard work are not always enough; you need to be at least a little prepared financially and technically.

It is also not enough to take the first drawing you come across and start drilling, cutting, planing, sharpening a crossbow from scrap materials. Believe me, the result may bring little joy, because as a result, the crossbow may turn out to be either too heavy, not very convenient, or may not meet your requirements and dreams at all.

So, what do you need to make your dreams, which would satisfy you? First of all, decide which model you want to make. After all, today there are many options for crossbows that differ in their design, features and characteristics. Then you need to think about what available materials you will make it from.

How to make a crossbow trigger at home, a sight, a rod, a lock, a reel, a crossbow stock for a crossbow with your own hands - required parts and spare parts for a crossbow

Well, now you need to remember something about crossbows. So, what does a crossbow consist of:

  • bed;
  • guides;
  • trigger mechanism;
  • tension device;
  • bowstring;
  • arrows.

In addition, such small arms differ in the level of tension of the shoulders:

  • crossbows with a tension level of about 20 kg. These are models used for recreation and entertainment;
  • crossbows with a tension level of up to 20-55 kg. The target range of such devices is about 60-80 m;
  • crossbows with a tension level of more than 55 kg. In such devices, the bowstring is tensioned using special devices, platoon.

According to the type of shoulders, crossbows are:

  • block;
  • straight;
  • classic.

The stock in crossbows can also be of different types:

  • traditional;
  • ancient type;
  • sports type.

Having a basic understanding of crossbows, you can make a choice of design drawings for small arms. But before that, we recommend that you pay attention to one more important detail, namely your technical capabilities. Of course, you can make a crossbow with your own hands from scrap materials, using wood and metalworking equipment. Such machines are necessary to produce important details, requiring machine work.

How to assemble a crossbow: an antique wooden medieval crossbow or a homemade modern six-shot combat crossbow according to the simplest schemes with proportions and dimensions

As a rule, making a crossbow begins with a stock, and for this you need to select wood. The wood used to make the stock must be strong, not splinter or warp. Birch, beech, walnut, and ash are considered excellent options. There should be no problems with choosing a tree.

Suitable as a starting material for a stock wooden plank having a thickness of about 30 cm. Next you need to decide what dimensions the bed should have. How to choose the right size can be seen in the table.

The stock is measured starting from the trigger to the points located on the back of the butt. Let's also give an example table different sizes, in order to correctly make the bed, taking into account the parameters of your own physique.

After you measure your body, according to the table, you can choose the most suitable sizes for the bed. If you take into account all the nuances, then the bed will suit you in the best way.

Next, you can begin the process of making the stock. First of all, we recommend that you create a template from paper. To do this, you need to draw a bed on paper according to the measurements taken. But if you think it’s too complicated or unclear, you can use ready-made options boxes, drawings of which are presented on Internet portals.

Next comes the turn of making the arms of small arms. Need to pick up required material. You can make shoulders from an old, long-decommissioned sports bow; if you don’t have one, textolite or fiberglass will do. True, from such materials only arms with a small tension force are obtained; in the future you can use such a crossbow only for entertainment purposes. An old, unnecessary car spring is considered an excellent option. It can be found at any car junkyard or in a neighbor's garage. In addition, if you are not too lazy to go to the store, you can buy fiberglass, carbon fiber or other composite materials to make shoulders.

It is worth saying that shoulders made of fiberglass or composite materials turn out good. If you decide to make a crossbow with your own hands from scrap materials, then for the shoulders the best option will serve car spring.

Drawings of a crossbow, what a crossbow can be made from - a crossbow from a saw, board, plywood, bow and other materials. We make a crossbow with specified characteristics

So, you already have an idea about the types of crossbows, you can say that you are technically and physically prepared, you have collected all the necessary materials at hand and are ready to start working right away. So, let us help you a little by providing the necessary drawings for making a crossbow with your own hands, which will have the following characteristics:

  • weight up to 3 kg;
  • dimensions 960*820 mm;
  • tension force up to 40 kg;
  • target firing range is approximately 100 m.

Let's start making the mount. To the part as in the figure, you need to attach the stock and shoulders of the crossbow:

The part needs to be cut from metal sheet, which will have a thickness of 2.5-3 mm. Then it needs to be bent and welded welding machine. We insert two bolts into the hole in the center of the fastening element and at the end of the stock of the crossbow structure. You need to weld a stirrup to the fastening element as in the picture to make it easier to tighten the bowstring.

The stirrup can be bent from wire having a diameter of 6-8 mm.

To make the shoulders you will need a car spring 6 mm thick.

On the wide part of the shoulder you need to make 4 notches, slightly semicircular. These will be the holes for the bolts that will allow you to attach the arms to the mount. Drilled holes can weaken the shoulders and lead to deformation. Let us give you an example of a drawing of the shoulders and deck of a crossbow device:

A stock taken from small arms will reduce the time and costs of making a crossbow. The main thing about this is correct selection bed size. If there is a trace left from the trunk in such a stock, then it can be hammered in with wooden blocks using epoxy glue. In addition, if you want to make a crossbow with your own hands, you can use wooden parts. The buttstock must be attached to the guide and serve as the basis for the trigger device. We present to you the drawings of the butt:

The crossbow that we propose to make yourself is a block one, so to make it you will need drawings of the block mechanism:

Also in your work, drawings of block elements and individual parts will greatly help you:

When making homemade small arms, you must remember to process the bowstring and arrow guides. Precise finishing of such elements will ensure maximum shooting accuracy.

The guide lines must be processed very carefully, because they must be perfectly smooth and straight. The guides will also need to be polished. You can see the dimensions of the groove for the guides for the arrows in the presented drawing.

The crosspiece to which the shoulders are attached must be installed at the end of the stock. You can make a cross from aluminum or wood. The sighting mechanism consists of a rear sight and a front sight. You can make a crossbow with an optical sight, although for this you will need to include an aiming bar in the design of your homemade weapon. After you have made it according to the drawings, you will have to make its vertical and horizontal adjustments. The presented drawings are suitable for making a crossbow, which can be made from any available material.

photo. Ready homemade crossbow

It is worth saying that the options for drawings are the most various models You can find crossbows, compound crossbows, and recurve crossbows on the Internet. Making them with your own hands is not so difficult, the main thing is to have a great desire and no obstacles can hinder you in your endeavors. If you don't try, you will never know whether it is difficult to make or not. Therefore, we recommend, not to miss your chance, to prepare necessary materials, arm yourself the right tool, print out all the drawings and start making a homemade crossbow with your own hands. Good luck to you!
