Pros: Powerful, can be adjusted to any fabric. Works well with hard synthetics (I sew a sail, thick synthetics + straps + zig-zag). At the same time, if you reconfigure, it sews tulle and other small items just as well. The walking foot works great on curtains.

Disadvantages: No

Comment: Excellent model. Sews everything! From thin curtains to leather and synthetic belts. Record - 4 layers of belt + 2 layers of synthetics.

Pros: high-quality stitching on different types fabrics, not noisy, hard case

Disadvantages: I haven’t found any in 4 years of active use.

Comment: I am very pleased with the machine, I sew a lot and have never had any problems. It copes with completely different fabrics: suits, chiffon, and a sweater with lycra (the carpet locker didn’t want to adjust, but I urgently needed to sew a T-shirt - Janomochka miraculously sewed everything together). The car is great! The only thing I want to make a reservation is that I don’t skimp on needles and threads, I only use quality ones.

Pros: I really like this one sewing machine. I tried to sew different materials: from leather to knitwear. Everything suits me. Easy to use, you can figure it out without any difficulties. Of course, by modern standards, it is already morally outdated, but for the undemanding consumer it is 100% suitable. It is necessary to strictly observe the needle-thread-fabric ratio, then all the lines will be even. Thick areas pass without problems. I bought a bunch of paws - for models from this company they are very cheap.

Disadvantages: It is inconvenient that to reverse you have to hold the button continuously. There is no way to hold the fabric with your hands at this moment. But this may be due to my inexperience.

Comment: At first I wanted more expensive model but after reading a lot positive feedback about this hard worker, I bought it. And I never regretted it.

Advantages: Workhorse, I’ve had it for 10 years, sews silk, chiffon, drape, denim, leather. Served me for 3 years in clothing repairs. Paid for itself 20 times. I love it. I like that you can choose a quiet speed - very convenient for sewing thick materials (when, for example, you hem jeans or leather). It’s also convenient to fix the needle in the fabric, for example at a corner when you need to turn it)

Disadvantages: The automatic buttonhole is not the best, I make the buttonhole by hand.

Comment: Regarding skipped stitches, I can only say one thing - different fabrics need different needles and threads and you will be happy, you can read more about the settings on sewing forums (aspen or season for example). Also, some users criticize the overlock stitch, overlock stitch and Processing an edge with an overlocker is a big difference, and you need to immediately understand that not a single household machine will process it, much less cut the edge like an overlocker.
Regarding the extra 5 embroidery pseudo-overlock stitches, I use 3 of them all the time, especially the last 23 - I use it as a finishing stitch on jeans, for example, my friends and customers are delighted.

Advantages: The price-quality ratio is clearly expressed here. Very good car. I've been using it for 4 years now. It takes chiffon, drape, and knitwear. The stitching is satisfactory and can withstand comparison with industrial stitching. I read a comment about an automatic loop (they say it’s impossible to adjust the uniform covering of the left and right edges), but this happens quite often in industrial machines. In a word, this machine is suitable for both simple housewives and a small workshop with a small area (power) and maneuverability. Very good function- “knitted stitch” (half-zigzag). Good selection paws and devices. And the most important thing is that any more or less capable dressmaker or seamstress will be able to set it up and make minor repairs.

Disadvantages: Non-adjustable length of knit stitches and some finishing stitches. But in my opinion, this is not regulated in other sewing machines, and different brands. And yet it is inconvenient. Of course, slow speed (with the maximum selected). But the most important thing is that I can’t buy good quality needles for knitwear! The “native” (included) needle takes any type of knitwear, but the purchased one does NOT!

Advantages: Ease of use. Takes thin, thick, knitted fabrics. It works quietly, does not vibrate, and is powerful.

Disadvantages: I don’t get a very beautiful loop, the density of the covering is different, there is balancing, but I couldn’t adjust it. I talked on specialized forums - many people have this problem.
With knitted stitches, when setting the stitch width, the pitch is set automatically, sometimes this is not very convenient.

Comment: Today I happened to sew on a simple Brother and I fell in love with my machine with triple the force. Everything that seemed self-evident - an even stitch without breaks or loops, the presence of decorative and knitted stitches, low volume during operation, ease of threading the bobbin, ease when passing through thick areas, smooth speed adjustment, etc. - all turned into undoubted advantages.
I sew both knitwear on my machine, without an overlocker, and both thin and thick fabrics.

This is an electronic sewing machine, which, due to its qualities, should appeal to both beginners and professionals. Let's take a closer look at it.

Sewing machine has a hard casing. The car can be stored and transported in it without any fear of accidental impacts (tested by a two-year-old child). The housing also has enough space to accommodate the power cord and the foot pedal with signal cord along with the sewing machine itself.

The machine in working position looks like this:

The lid of the top compartment shows the basic sewing patterns. In the compartment itself there are (from left to right): tension regulator top thread; presser foot pressure regulator; horizontal spool holder, slot for installing a vertical spool holder; set of paws; a place for winding thread onto a bobbin. In addition, a set of needles and a ruler-guide are located in the same compartment.

By the way, the thread tension and presser foot pressure regulators allow you to adjust the machine to any thickness of fabric - from thin airy fabrics to thick multi-layer ones. However, to understand how to use them, you still have to read the included instructions.

Top of the machine

Cover with sewing patterns

As it turned out, this arrangement, when part of the adjustments, thread and bobbin holders are hidden under the cover, is very convenient solution. The horizontal arrangement of the spool ensures smoother unwinding of the thread, and when not in use, the upper elements of the machine are reliably protected from accidental influences. Myself appearance the car becomes more pleasing to the eye, and with practical point In view there is an excellent place to store accessories.

Other accessories are located in the lower compartment. Full list theirs is as follows:

  • standard foot;
  • foot for decorative stitches;
  • foot for overcasting stitches;
  • invisible hem foot;
  • foot for sewing in a zipper;
  • hem foot (2 mm);
  • buttonhole foot;
  • ripper;
  • set of needles;
  • rod for the second coil;
  • felt pad and plates for the spool;
  • ruler-guide;
  • brush;
  • screwdrivers;
  • bobbins.

There was a problem with the zipper embroidery foot - in the working position the needle rests on it, which makes it unsuitable for work. Most likely, the problem can be solved if you work a little with a file or buy a new foot in the store. However, I did neither one nor the other, since I had not yet felt the need for this paw. There is no such problem with the other paws. Besides the standard foot, I most often used the invisible hem foot. I used it to hem trousers easily and efficiently.

The front panel of the machine is made of plastic, the frame (main load-bearing frame) - metal.

On the front panel there are:

  • needle up/down button;
  • selected stitch indicator;
  • stitch width regulator;
  • stitch length regulator;
  • maximum sewing speed regulator;
  • "Reverse" key for sewing in reverse direction.

Let's look at some of these elements in a little more detail.

Needle up/down button. The needle will always stop in the up position or always in the down position, depending on the position of this button. There is no need to turn the flywheel by hand.

Selected stitch indicator. The selected position is highlighted by a red LED. The stitch selection itself is carried out by a switch on the right side of the machine. Below I have posted a photo of the indicator panel itself and the corresponding list of stitches (taken from the instruction manual).

Stitch selector indicator panel

  1. Diamond satin stitch for decorative finishing.
  2. Scallop seam. For decorative finishing and edge finishing.
  3. Diamond-shaped satin stitch for decorative finishing (different from item 1 in pattern).
  4. Triangular satin stitch for decorative finishing.
  5. Decorative stitching. Often used for sewing on cord or decorative threads.
  6. Overlock seam. Is used for decorative processing edges of the fabric.
  7. Bridge stitch. Used to sew two pieces of fabric together so that there is a gap between them.
  8. Blind stitch for stretch fabrics. Used to hem the hem of a garment, such as trousers, when the stitching is not to be visible.
  9. Elastic step stitch. Used to sew two fabrics together, such as patchwork.
  10. Overlock seam. Used for decorative finishing of edges of thin fabrics.
  11. Three-step zigzag. Can be used, for example, to sew on elastic.
  12. Zigzag.
  13. Straight stitch.
  14. Knit stitch. Used as a straight stitch when sewing medium-thick knitwear.
  15. Reinforced straight stitch. Recommended for sewing stretchy fabrics or thick knits. This stitch is also used where strength and reliability of the seam is needed. Use it to reinforce details such as hooks and armholes, for sewing backpacks, etc. The stitch is sewn with two stitches forward and one stitch back, creating a seam that does not tear easily.
  16. Reinforced zigzag. Can be used for sewing heavy elastic fabrics and all types of work for which zigzag is used. It can also be used as a decorative stitch.
  17. "Feather" line. Used as a decorative stitch and for butt stitching.
  18. Overlock stitch. Used for simultaneous stitching and overcasting the edges of materials that are not very prone to fraying.
  19. Closed overlock stitch. It is used when processing fabrics such as jersey, sewing cuffs and knitted collars.
  20. Pullover stitch with reinforced edge. Elastic and finishing and overcasting seams on knitted parts, stitching parts.
  21. Decorative stitching.
  22. Decorative stitching.
  23. Decorative stitching.

It is worth noting that the overlock stitch (No. 18) has the same pattern on the front and back sides, which is different from the stitches that can be obtained on a real overlocker.

Reverse key. With its help you can easily and effortlessly secure a stitch. Moreover, the size and location of this button allows you to almost always accurately find it by touch.

The lower compartment can be removed if you need to process sleeves, trouser legs and similar objects

Threading is easy and simple, and the needle threader threads the needle in seconds.

The foot can be raised so that the gap under the foot increases to 11 mm. This is very convenient if you need to place a thick “pie” under the foot, for example, from a couple of layers of coat fabric, insulation and lining. The foot itself can be changed at any time. Just press the red button on the back, disconnect the old presser foot, place the new presser foot under the presser foot holder and lower it.

The built-in needle threader can amaze any seamstress who has never previously worked with sewing machines not made in the USSR.

There is a function for sweeping a linen loop in automatic mode. To do this, you need to insert the button into the foot measuring device and set the width and density of the buttonhole. The machine will do the rest itself.

The electronic unit, regardless of the sewing speed, ensures a constant needle puncture force. This is one of the advantages of machines with an electronic unit, which allows you to comfortably work even with the densest and thickest fabrics.

The maximum sewing speed of this machine is quite sufficient for any household tasks, but it is worth remembering that the machine is not a professional one and tasks such as hemming curtains and sewing covers for upholstered furniture may seem tedious.

Back view

At the rear end of the sewing machine there are: a handwheel with a main drive switch (it can also be called a switch for the bobbin winding mode), a stitch selector, a main switch, a power cord and a connected pedal. In the photo you can also see the presser foot lift/lower lever, the needle threader and the previously mentioned red button for quickly changing the presser foot.

Great for household needs for both beginners and experienced seamstresses. In addition, this is a great option for replacing an old Soviet sewing machine.

In conclusion, I’ll tell you about one interesting episode. When I chose this machine, I consulted a sewing machine mechanic at the factory upholstered furniture. Among other things, I asked him a question about the warranty for this model. The answer finally convinced me that I had made the right choice: “Forget about the warranty, with this machine you will never need it.”

The warranty was really not useful to me, since breakdowns most often occur after the end of the warranty period.

Partially disassembled car

You are probably wondering why I dismantled the car. No, this is not to add such a spectacular photograph to the article. The fact is that when this article was almost ready to be sent to the editor, the machine’s needle raising/lowering button suddenly failed and the LED indicating the selected stitch went out.

Since the car is already four years old and the warranty has expired, I had to disassemble it myself and try to fix it. I repaired the LED, but I could not determine the reason for the failure of the needle up/down button. On the one hand, this is clearly not a primary function and its loss is not at all terrible, but on the other, the very fact of a breakdown and the need for repairs just four years from the date of purchase is a very alarming signal. You never know what else might go wrong there in the near future.

I have basic knowledge of electronics, so I managed to fix the LED (a very important thing, by the way - switching lines by touch is hardly a pleasant pleasure), and the average housewife would obviously have to take the car for repairs - and certain losses in this regard. Although, perhaps this is a pure accident that only happened to my car. To make sure of this, you need to read the experiences of other users on relevant forums on the Internet. However, if you have decided to buy a sewing machine, then I advise you to study the forums in any case.

Sewing machine in household either reality or the dream of every woman, even if sewing things with her own hands is not her hobby. In any family there is a lot of simple work with fabrics that you absolutely don’t want to do by hand, because sewing on a machine is much faster and of better quality. In the old days, an old “Singer” or “Podolskaya” was cherished as the apple of one’s eye and passed on by inheritance. Now purchasing this equipment is not a problem; the only difficulty is choosing a model. We present to you the Janome My Excel W23U sewing machine, reviews of which place it in the first row among many models. The company that produces these products, Janom, has many years of experience and uses the latest technologies for their production.

Introductory review

Computer-controlled machines have a microprocessor, so their capabilities are much wider than those of simple electromechanical ones. Only computerized machines can perform many decorative stitches and complex operations.

W23U has good combination functionality and low price at good quality sewing The list of its capabilities includes many operations: an optimal set of stitches with a total of 23, including several decorative, overlock, and also for sewing knitwear; automatic buttonhole sewing; devices for sewing zippers and buttons.

The power of this model is sufficient to work with any type of fabric, from thin, airy fabrics to dense, heavy materials.

Janome W23U: Feature Specifications

The Janom machine has smooth speed control, needle positioning, an electronic needle piercing force stabilizer, and a needle threader. The working needle is controlled by a built-in microprocessor, which significantly reduces the need to control the stitching. The presser foot pressure regulator changes the pressing force of the layers of fabric, which allows, if necessary, to set it to the desired position depending on the thickness of the layer. For example, when sewing thick fabrics, as well as when sewing curved seams with a smooth turn, the presser foot should be loosened. The presence of a regulator makes it easier to work with knitwear, since by reducing the pressure, you can avoid the effect of stretching it. The electronic force stabilizer allows you to sew even thick leather.

The controls are located under the top cover of the Janome W23U. The instructions are located there, so without stopping from work, you can see the width and length of the stitch for a specific operation, as well as select the thread tension and the appropriate presser foot. Maximum stitch width is 6.5 mm. During sewing, the working area is illuminated by a lamp. The spool in the Janome W23U sewing machine is located horizontally, so the threads unwind smoothly, without jerking.

Another function is the “reverse” key. The button is conveniently located; you can easily find it by touch and press it to secure the stitch.

Shuttle device

Computerized machines typically use a horizontal shuttle. This is exactly what is installed in Janome My Excel W23U. This type has a different arrangement and design from the vertical shuttle. It is installed horizontally under the needle plate, and since it is not covered by the bobbin case, it is within sight. It is convenient for the seamstress to control the color of the thread and its residue on the bobbin.

The horizontal shuttle does not need lubrication, the thread in the spool does not twist (vertical ones have this disadvantage). It does not skip stitches when sewing. The horizontal position of the shuttle provides easy access to the bobbin and easy threading.

The disadvantage of a horizontal shuttle could be the difficulty of adjusting the tension of the lower thread, but in practice this operation is used very rarely; usually it is enough to adjust the tension of the upper thread.

Let's take a closer look at some positive features cars.

Automatic buttonhole sewing, free sleeve

The Janome W23U sewing machine allows you to perform functions such as sewing buttonholes automatically in just one step. The size of the button is determined by a device with a special foot, so you don’t have to measure the length of the buttonhole yourself. Another useful feature, the so-called “free sleeve”, is necessary for convenience when processing sleeves and any narrow products.

Needle switching function

Switching the needle up or down is sometimes necessary when changing the direction of the seam, in particular at the corners of the parts being sewn. By pressing the button, you can fix the lower position of the needle in the fabric when stopping sewing. After turning the product, press the button again. The needle will return to the up position.

Sewing speed limit

If you need to reduce the sewing speed, just use the regulator to set the desired maximum limit. After this, regardless of the pressure on the pedal, it will not exceed the specified value.

Equipment

Under the lid there is an organizer for storing accessories: a set of needles, presser feet, spool pins, bobbins, etc. Included with the Janome My Excel W23U machine, the buyer receives:

  • Seam ripper.
  • wide (C), standard, for sewing in a zipper, for blind stitching, for hemming 2 mm, for automatic buttonholes.
  • Ruler-guide.
  • Fabric guide for quilting.
  • Set of needles.
  • Screwdriver.
  • Cleaning brush.
  • Plastic bobbins 4 pcs.
  • Hard case for the machine.

Possible faults

Janome W23U sewing machines, like all Japanese household appliances, are of high quality and reliable. Nevertheless, breakdowns sometimes occur. Most often, the cause of such trouble is lack of proper care or careless performance of work. Even the most advanced technology can refuse to work if it is not provided with the right conditions operation.

If you know the basic principles, you can try to fix minor problems with the machine yourself. However, it should be taken into account that technical device The Janome W23U sewing machine has its own characteristics, so some breakdowns and failures may be atypical, as with most machines of other brands. This is due to the fact that in the manufacture of its equipment, the Janome concern uses advanced technologies, providing almost complete sewing automation.

So, some problems:

  1. The needle does not catch the shuttle thread, the seam does not work. The reason is the mismatch between the needle mechanism and the shuttle. The mechanism needs to be adjusted by a specialist.
  2. The speed slowed down and the noise increased. A switch that limits the speed may have been accidentally pressed. You should put it in the right position.
  3. When sewing, loops are formed at the bottom. The reason is that the upper thread is not threaded correctly. Most likely the thread is not passing through the thread take-up. You need to raise the foot, turn the flywheel manually, when the thread take-up is in the upper position, pass the thread through it. If the thread is fine, it may be because there are burrs on the needle plate or hook.
  4. Needles break. Occurs when the needle hits the needle plate, or when the thickness of the needle does not match the thickness of the thread or the density of the fabric.
  5. If you hear a knocking sound when sewing thick fabrics, you should check whether the needle is dull. Perhaps the needle is of the wrong thickness and does not push the fabric fibers apart, but pierces them. Hence the knock. To fix it, just replace the needle.
  6. Due to power surges in the network, wires or windings in the motor may burn out. If there is a smell of burnt wiring, you should send the machine for repair.
  7. If the engine does not turn on, but it does not, the electronic control unit may have failed. Its replacement can only be performed by specialists who understand the complex electronics of the Janome W23U machine. The price of spare parts is determined in each specific case depending on the breakdown.

Caring for Janom sewing machines

Any sewing machine requires maintenance, first of all, regular cleaning and lubrication, otherwise “surprises” will begin in the form of noise, skipped stitches, uneven stitching, etc. Cleaning should begin by removing the hook. The rubbing surfaces are cleaned from dust, lint and fabric fibers with a special brush. Then they are lubricated. In addition, oil is poured into the technological holes, the location of which is indicated in the instructions. At the same time, you need to remember that excessive lubrication does not benefit the machine, but is fraught with the opposite effect. Excess lubricant is wiped off with a dry cloth, after which the shuttle is installed in place. The machine can only be stored in dry, heated rooms.

Sewing machines Janome My Excel W23U: price, reviews

Based on customer reviews, we can conclude that the presented sewing machine is characterized by them as convenient and reliable. Almost all owners of this modern functional equipment are inclined to this opinion. The main criteria by which such an indispensable assistant is evaluated:

  • Ease of Management;
  • reliability;
  • availability of functions necessary for everyday needs and hobbies;
  • modern design;
  • ergonomics;
  • average price category.

The appearance of the device is above all praise, and the presence of instructions on the panel and buttons is another plus that the Janome W23U sewing machine has earned from its owners. Reviews confirm what to have before your eyes practical guide much more convenient than flipping through the instructions in search of the necessary information.

Despite all its undoubted advantages, its price is not too high. You can purchase a Janom machine both in chain stores and via the Internet for an amount of 7,000 rubles and more. Often, the cost of similar models does not depend on the differences between them, but solely on the place of purchase. However, it is preferable to purchase a machine “in real life”, then there is an opportunity to test it in operation, as they say, without “leaving the cash register”.

I sew both knitwear on my machine, without an overlocker, and both thin and thick fabrics.
