The easiest way to decorate a door is to paint it. Using paint in standard “door” colors will simply refresh it, but using rich shades and their combinations will radically change both the decor of the door and the design of the entire room.

Decorating with fabric

As with decoupage, the surface is first prepared according to the previously described principle. While the door is drying, prepare the fabric. To determine the degree of shrinkage, measure the size of a piece of fabric, wet it and dry it. After this, measurements are taken. If the difference in parameters is large, then all the material will have to be subjected to such processing.

The fabric is fixed to door leaf using glue, it is preferable to use casein glue. In addition, you may need a hard spatula and, if desired, decorative fittings.

Step 1. Prepare decorative fabric according to the size of the door.

Attention! You can use not a single piece of fabric, but a combination of various scraps of fabric geometric shapes, which will form the overall picture.

Step 2. Apply glue to the surface in an even layer and attach the fabric. Using a spatula, smooth the fabric, removing air bubbles and smoothing out wrinkles.

Stage 3. Add suitable decorative accessories to the fabric surface.

Decorating with liquid wallpaper

Liquid wallpaper is universal material, which will create unusual patterns and even three-dimensional designs on the surface.

What you will need for decoration:

  • dry wallpaper mixture;
  • hopper gun;
  • roller;
  • selected pigments for tinting;
  • transparent varnish;
  • alkyd primer;
  • oil putty white under liquid wallpaper;
  • spatulas of various sizes.

Before applying wallpaper, the surface is prepared in a known manner. It is recommended to remove the old layer of paint, if any.

Stage 1. The door is coated with a primer in one layer, and then puttied.

Stage 2. If you want to create using liquid wallpaper some kind of drawing, then draw its outline with a simple pencil on the surface. To avoid confusion, make notes indicating the use of a specific color.

Step 3. Add warm water to the wallpaper mixture and mix it with your hands. After 15 minutes, stir again, adding desired color. The more colors, the richer the shade.

Attention! While creating colorful painting On the door, it is recommended to prepare the wallpaper mixture in portions, by color. The mixture is infused for approximately 12 hours. After this period, you can begin decorating.

Step 4. Take a little wallpaper mixture on a spatula and spread it evenly over the surface of the door. Make sure that the layer of wallpaper applied is the same thickness. If you want to add relief to this decor, go over the applied decorative layers with a textured roller.

This decor dries in 1 to 3 days. After complete drying, the decorated surface is varnished. If you don’t like something, repeat the decorating process, washing off the applied layer with warm water.

This is done according to the same principle as before wallpapering, however, in this case you need to bring the surface of the old door to perfection, since minor defects It's unlikely to be hidden. If necessary, replace the beads holding the glass. The wood can be additionally treated with antiseptic impregnation.

Finishing is done gradually. To begin, divide the door into several sections with squares of approximately 50x50 cm. Another simple method is to decorate doors using vinyl stickers. This method is great if the canvas is generally in good condition and you just want to add more color to the interior or link the product with some piece of decor or furniture.

Place it on the surface and cover with a layer of a mixture of water and PVA glue. Using a flat brush, carefully spread it over the paper, pressing it against the wood.

Quite an original method decorative finishing DIY doors - using moldings. With their help you can create some kind of imitation of stucco. This option is great for classic interior, as well as for rooms with notes of antiquity or modern combinations, for example, art deco.

Door moldings

Decorating with moldings involves the use of special elements made of foam or polyurethane. To fix them on the door use glue like liquid nails. You can create almost any composition, but due to the limited shapes, it is best to focus on straight lines and geometric angular shapes. However, keep in mind that decorating this way sliding doors will not work.

Mosaic

More rare and unusual way decorating old doors with your own hands - decorating with tiles or mosaics. The low popularity of this method is primarily due to the fact that ceramics are quite heavy, and therefore not every door can withstand such a load. In addition, the thickness of the canvas increases, which can also affect the quality of the product.

Options for decorating the door leaf with mosaics

This will give the canvas a bright, original look, but at the same time, the finishing will not greatly affect the thickness and weight of the structure. For glass products you need to use a special white tile adhesive. It is even better to use epoxy mastic or other transparent resin, including liquid glass.

Another way to decorate an old door is to use glass inserts. You can purchase ready-made glass with film, pattern or metal inserts, but it is much more interesting to decorate the canvas yourself. The most popular methods are painting glass with acrylic paints or creating stained glass.

For the latter option, you will additionally need a decorative mastic-contour that imitates metal carcass. You can only work in a horizontal position so that the paint is evenly distributed over the surface. After drying, insert it into the panel and secure with glazing beads.

Any decoration can change the aesthetic perception of the door leaf and turn it into a real masterpiece of home decor.

After renovation, interior openings remain open or are closed with old doors due to the high cost of new ones, but you can always update the panels by doing decoupage interior door with glass with your own hands.

What is decoupage and what is the value of this type of decor?

This art of decorating various objects has existed for more than 5 centuries, and it began in Venice. The craftsmen of this city noted the high cost of Chinese household items decorated with the finest inlays or carvings, but since they did not know the technique, a skillful imitation was created. A design was applied to the dishes or pieces of furniture, most often it was a thin fabric with some kind of pattern, and then the surface was covered with several layers of varnish. Sometimes their number reached 30 or more. Actually, using this technique you can decorate anything, including glass. Varnishing will give it a matte appearance, but at the same time the pattern will gain depth, and at the same time will not interfere with the penetration of light.

Decouped chest

Decoupage became widespread due to the fact that the cost of such products was significantly lower than that of Chinese household items. That is why this technique of applying a design followed by varnishing was at one time called the art of the poor (in Italian – arte povera). Over time, decoupage spread throughout the world; it is even known that even icons were made in this way in Russia. However, the technique was subsequently forgotten, used less and less, and its peak of popularity arose quite recently. Considering the diversity modern materials, the use of such decor can have very wide possibilities. It should be especially noted that this art is accessible to everyone; it does not require special training or any complex devices to implement with your own hands.

Learning the basics of glass decoration

First of all, you should remember that you are making decor for yourself, and not for sale, and therefore it is not at all necessary to follow the path of the Venetian masters and apply dozens of layers of varnish; you can get by with just one. Sometimes you need to cover the drawing itself with a special transparent decoupage glue, then carefully remove part from the back side paper base and get the thinnest film with the image. This is required mainly when working with printer printouts on thick paper, which is difficult to apply to glass due to its opacity. Impregnated with glue or varnish upper layer, where the design is printed, you will have the opportunity to carefully wet the back of the paper.

Glass plate after decoupage

It is noteworthy that, unlike opaque surfaces, decoupage of door glass can be either direct or reverse. The first option is standard - applying a napkin or other material with a pattern outward; both wooden and metal objects everyday life Another thing is the reverse application of the image, when the finishing layer is located behind the glass, with the front side turned towards it. In this case, the clarity of the design will remain even after applying varnish, which will cover the back side of the paper or other base applied to the door glass. However similar option cannot be applied to matte, translucent products.

There are several styles in which decor is made, these are Victorian, Provence, country, the so-called shabby chic, which has existed since the late 80s, simple (using a minimum number of elements) and ethnic. Actually, all these styles correspond to those used for interiors in residential premises, because it is necessary that the object being decorated fits into the decor. Otherwise, as already mentioned, you don’t need any special equipment for the work; all you need to do decoupage on glass door with your own hands, everyone usually has them at home. The main thing is paper scissors with which you will cut out the images you like. Various-sized brushes, a paper knife, sandpaper, a sponge and a roller will come in handy. We’ll tell you how to use all this further.

How is decoupage done on glass?

The simplest option is to use a special napkin or card that is applied to the glass, like a decal. In this case, you only need to prepare the surface by degreasing it with window cleaner and wiping it well with a clean paper towel. Then it should be applied to required area special glue for decoupage or any other suitable for glass, that is, one that will remain transparent after drying. Now we overlay the image, straight or in reverse way, which we talked about earlier, then carefully level the thin paper layer with a roller, at the same time squeezing out excess glue. Use a cotton swab dipped in alcohol to remove any excess glue, and if any drips remain, clean them off with a paper knife. And all that remains is to cover everything with acrylic varnish.

DIY decoupage on glass

It is somewhat more difficult to work with images cut out from magazines or printed on a printer, since in this case the paper will be very thick. To avoid a clear transition from the surface to be decorated to the pattern, which is called a “ledge,” you need to prepare a cut piece of paper. To do this, cover the front surface of the sheet with acrylic varnish, wait until it is absorbed and dry, cover it with a second layer, and so on up to 5 times. Now we patiently wait for everything to completely harden, after which the drawing will be firmly stuck with a transparent film, and you can soak the back layer of paper in warm water. Next, we carefully clean it off with a thin sandpaper or pumice stone; the design will remain on a thin varnish film, which we glue to the glass in the reverse way described above.

If the image is not too bright, it is recommended to create a background for it using, making sure to apply it in 2 layers after gluing the picture (but in no case before). The glue must dry so that the applied paper does not move during the acrylic coating process. In this case, decoration is performed only in the reverse way, so that the picture is pressed against the glass, and its back side, along with the other surface, is painted. Use sponge brushes; they will create a beautiful texture, unlike fluffy brushes, which often leave streaks. After coating acrylic paint After it dries, you need to apply several layers of acrylic varnish.

To apply several images with your own hands in a certain order, on the opposite side of the glass, make a mark with a washable felt-tip pen or glue a sheet of paper with marks on it with masking tape.

A few subtleties when decorating door glass with pictures

If you want to glue a picture from a fashionable glossy magazine, be sure to soak the page in warm water first, otherwise it will be smeared with glue. will go in waves. The same applies to printouts on thick printer paper. By the way, it is much easier to obtain high-quality and bright images on the glass of the door, often using even thicker large-format photo paper for inkjet printer. By covering it with varnish that does not contain water and drying it thoroughly, you can tear off most of the layers of the sheet in one motion, leaving only the thin front one with the pattern. If delamination is not observed, remove the fibers in pellets, after first soaking the sheet with the varnished front surface.

Materials and tools for decoupage

If you use special decoupage cards or napkins, it is not necessary to soak them first; you can simply put them in a puddle liquid glue, lightly immerse it in it and, taking it out with tweezers with rounded or soft tips, place it on the glass. You can also do it differently - lightly spray the napkin from a spray bottle, and then immediately apply it to the door glass, previously lubricated with glue. Slightly moistened paper will smooth out well with a roller or brush and will not wrinkle later, after drying. And finally, another trick from the masters: before you decoupage the door with a napkin, carefully smooth it out, spray it with hairspray and then smooth it with an iron.

Attention - only water-based varnishes warp and wrinkle napkins and rice paper, so try to use undiluted formulations.

It is also worth mentioning which adhesives are suitable for attaching the pattern to the glass. In addition to special ones, you can use the acrylic varnish already mentioned above (just be sure to be undiluted), paste, nail polish, a regular glue stick, PVA, wallpaper glue (again, undiluted with water) and even egg white. All of them will give a thin and, most importantly, transparent layer, which is especially important when doing decoupage with your own hands using the reverse technique. In addition to the materials listed, you can also use wallpaper, postcards and photographs; after covering them with varnish, you need to treat them from the back with thin sandpaper, carefully removing one layer of paper after another. Floral felt is also suitable for applying to a flat surface, but you need to use a large amount of glue.

Now let's talk a little about giving the decor a touch of antiquity, which is also suitable for victorian style, and for country, and especially for shabby chic. It is not difficult to artificially age the image itself; just briefly immerse it in a decoction of onion peels, tea or freshly brewed strong bean coffee. Another option: fill a wide, flat container with turpentine, stir a few drops of burnt sienna-colored oil paint in it, and then immerse the drawing in the resulting solution for 2 seconds. The result will be something like an ancient parchment with an engraving. And finally, another fairly simple method is to dissolve a little bitumen in white spirit to create a pale-colored composition that covers the already glued pattern. You can go over an image applied directly with a metal brush a couple of times, vertically and horizontally, this will give the effect of cracking.
