How to make an invisible bed with your own hands?

Due to a banal lack of space, not everyone can afford such a luxury as a double bed, which occupies almost half of the bedroom. However, a solution has been found - transformable beds that have recently appeared. Such beds allow you to free up space in daytime and have a good night's rest. After all, during the day we don’t need it at all. And there are such opportunities. For example, put the bed in the closet! Invisible bed. We do it WITH OUR HANDS!

From the Author: I have long thought about building a so-called wardrobe bed. During the day it looks like an ordinary wardrobe, at night it is a full-fledged sleeping bed. The implementation of the idea was facilitated by the prospect of saving square meters in its two-room apartment, and my hands were itching for a long time after office work with a drill and screwdriver. Physical work was preceded by mental work: sketches and drawings were drawn, dimensions were checked. And so, after approval at the family council of the final sketch of the bed and choice color range, in a company engaged in we will open the chipboard, the corresponding parts for the future bed were ordered.
1. A start has been made.

2. The bed itself was based on an orthopedic base and a mattress from the bed in use at that time with a sleeping area of 180 X 200 cm.

3. We remove the so-called lamellas - strips of birch plywood, curved in an arc.

4. Having thought that few furniture legs would be able to adequately support the weight of the future bed, it was decided to install the base of the cabinet on two 40 x 50 mm bars.

5. Mark the seats for the sides of the cabinet.

6. We join the base of the cabinet with its side panels.

7. Attach the top panel.

8. The “skeleton” of the cabinet is ready.

9. We attach the “skeleton” to the main wall of the apartment.

10. Special attention– this “tool”. All work was carried out in the apartment, there was a lot of shavings. Therefore, it was taken as a rule: if you drill a hole, immediately clean up after yourself.

11. We begin to install the bed frame using the bed lifting mechanism and gas springs.

For urban small apartment saving space is extremely important, which is why folding furniture (transformers) is becoming increasingly popular. This usually applies to massive pieces of furniture - beds and sofas. It is not always possible to allocate a separate room for the bedroom, so there is a need to combine rooms such as a bedroom and a living room, a bedroom and a nursery. Manufacturers offer a variety of options for such settings. You can choose beds that differ in size and shape. But it’s not always possible to choose what you want. The way out of the situation is to assemble the bed with your own hands.

For those whose apartment area does not allow large beds or sofas, furniture manufacturers have come up with the folding bed. During the day you can fold it up to create a sofa, and in the evening it becomes a cozy bed.

Assembly instructions are simple. Today you can find different schemes beds. These models are convenient because they easily rise after sleep, without taking up any useful space in the room. During the day there is a cozy sofa with a shelf, and in the evening there is a comfortable bed for relaxation. As a result, the space is used as conveniently as possible, and the room is not cluttered with anything unnecessary.

Types of folding beds

Folding bed, assembled with your own hands, has a number of advantages:

  1. It takes up little space, which allows you to free up room space for other needs.
  2. Dust does not collect on the upholstery, since the structure is assembled.
  3. When assembled, the structure is invisible, does not interfere, and the room can be used as a living room.

These models can be divided into 2 large groups:

A longitudinally folding bed is usually disguised as a closet door.

  1. Cross-folding ones, which are great for children. By appearance they are very reminiscent of the shelves in sleeping cars of trains, i.e. they lean to the side. Such beds can easily be disguised as shelves or used as bookcases. The designs of such beds are made single. They are comfortable and take up minimal space even when unfolded.
  2. The longitudinally folding bed can be double. It is usually disguised as cabinet doors. After use, it rises to the top using a special mechanism. The weight of this design is large, so it is not intended for children. The bed frame can be used in a room where there is enough space to lift it, otherwise you will have to think about another option.

Materials and tools for work

To assemble a bed with your own hands, you need to prepare following materials and tools:

Tools for making a wooden bed.

  1. MDF boards with a thickness of 20 mm. They can be ordered already cut required form and sizes.
  2. A sheet of plywood with a thickness of 10 mm, which will be used for the bottom. Can be replaced with wooden planks, but a plywood sheet is installed much faster; you just need to drill holes in it for ventilation.
  3. Fastening elements: nails, screws, metal corners, plates.
  4. Special lifting mechanism, which will ensure the movement of the bed frame.
  5. A simple pencil, a long metal ruler, a building level, a building corner.
  6. Sandpaper, drill, screwdriver.
  7. Screwdrivers, Sander, jigsaw.

A folding bed is easy to assemble; today you can find a wide variety of designs for this. But for this it is necessary to use drawings showing the assembly order.

Assembling the bed: main steps

The installation itself will be performed in the following sequence:

Diagram of a folding bed.

  1. First you need to draw up a design for such a bed. You can use many ready-made ones that offer various options. It is enough just to carry out calculations for the future design, substitute the resulting dimensional values into the already finished drawing. Usually the design is simple, it includes a box (mounted to the base), the bottom of the future bed (which is the outer part of the closet), a frame for the mattress and the mattress itself. A lifting mechanism is attached to the box, allowing the structure to be raised and lowered.
  2. The assembly of the bed is as follows: 2 long side boards of the frame are fastened transversely, and 1 more central board is installed in the middle, which will give the structure the necessary rigidity. Craftsmen often use the interior space to arrange convenient drawers for bed linen, for pillows that need to be put away somewhere after the bed is folded.
  3. All fastenings are carried out using self-tapping screws, metal corners and plates, the design should be as strong and reliable as possible. After this, you need to install a lifting mechanism. It can be purchased at finished form, it is mounted on the outer edge of the frame. The mechanism should not interfere with the use of the bed, for which it is necessary to first think about how and where it is best located.
  4. Afterwards the frame for the mattress is mounted, which is a structure made of a rectangular box and cross bars. Instead of slats, you can use a solid surface made of plywood sheet, it all depends on personal preference. But in plywood it is necessary to do round holes for ventilation of the internal space.
  5. The folding bed is attached to the cabinet structure, and the functionality of the folding mechanism is checked. The front part is a panel that imitates the surface of cabinet doors, but it can also be designed in the form of an attractive decorative board with carvings. This panel is the last to be attached; it is securely screwed to the bed frame.

A folding bed is a convenient design that allows you to save space in small city apartments where there is a lack of free space.

Such folding frames can be of completely different types; if you have some experience, you can easily assemble them with your own hands. You just need to first decide on the model of the bed, draw up or take a ready-made drawing, and purchase the materials necessary for the work.

Compact and multifunctional folding furniture is an excellent option for a small apartment. Often the same room has to be used for different purposes, and the room has to be transformed from one state to another very quickly, so the use of folding furniture is very useful.

The working principle of a folding bed. a - the bed can be easily removed from the cabinet niche; b - bed unfolded.

A folding bed is one of the most popular options for creating a versatile room.

Folding bed options

  1. Folding. Very convenient option, which allows you to significantly save room space, since the structure can be completely removed. You can make such a bed yourself, just take a regular one spring mattress, place it in wooden frame and secure the structure with loops to a beam nailed to the wall.
  2. Secretary bed. This design consists of two supporting posts to which a folding bed is attached. In this case, the outer wall, when folded, will serve as a desk cover.
  3. Folding bed. Well known option Soviet era. Modern folding beds are more convenient and compact, they fold easily and can be stored in special bedside tables and cabinets.

Features of the folding design

Folding structures can be horizontal or vertical. If we're talking about about a sleeping place for a child, then most often they choose horizontal version, which a child is quite capable of folding on his own. As for the load on a folding bed, it can be absolutely anything, so it’s perfect for everyone, regardless of weight category. Solid wood or chipboard is used as the main material, and mandatory element is a lifting mechanism in the form of gas elevators or special springs. It is more rational to use gas elevators, whose service life is longer than that of springs, and they do not require additional adjustment. You should also take into account such a nuance as fastening the bed, which is only possible if you have thick concrete walls.

A folding bed is a multifunctional piece of furniture. They will help to further expand the purpose of the sleeping area additional shelves above it and on its sides, cabinets, racks, you can provide a special compartment for bed linen. If your bed goes into a closet, then another similar closet for storing things will look good next to it. The folding design can fit into almost any interior, regardless of the size of the room and its purpose. The main thing is to work carefully on stylistic design premises and wisely select other pieces of furniture. The dimensions must comply with generally accepted standards: the width of a single bed should be 80 cm, a double bed should be 160 cm, and the length should be at least 2 m. A mattress is selected in accordance with the dimensions, the filling of which can be very varied depending on personal preferences.

Making a folding bed yourself

To build a bed with your own hands, you will need boards, chipboard or fiberboard, plywood, fasteners, a lifting mechanism, hinges, a mattress, and belts. First of all, it is worth drawing up a project for the sleeping area, in which all dimensions will be accurately indicated. The best option there will be a transforming bed that folds into a closet. In this case, its width and length should be slightly less than the width and height of the cabinet. Then we proceed to making the frame of the future bed from boards and chipboard. Please note that the structure must be, on the one hand, durable, and on the other, light. The front legs of the bed can be made in the form of a solid wall, mounted on hinges.

Particular attention should be paid to the installation of the lifting mechanism. As noted above, it is best to use gas elevators as a lift, the power of which is selected in accordance with the weight of the bed. The gas elevator is installed in this way: the parts are attached to the sides of the bed and the sides of the closet. The next step is to install the shock absorbers first from below and then from above. If you decide to make a single bed with a light bed, you can limit yourself to hinges and not install an additional lifting mechanism. After constructing and installing the bed frame and installing the lifting mechanism, all you have to do is lay the mattress and secure it with special straps. The final step will be the installation of cabinet doors and adjustment of fittings. Your trundle bed is ready for use.

It is not always possible to arrange your home the first time. Sometimes it takes years to renovate an apartment to achieve the desired result. It is very difficult to create comfort and coziness in small spaces small apartments. The solution to the issue may be completely unexpected - a bed in the wall or in the closet, which can make the room not only functional, but also beautiful. A bed built into the wall is very popular in apartments where there is not enough free space.

Like any other furniture, a folding bed has its advantages and disadvantages.

  1. Saving useful space is the main task of a built-in bed. When assembled, the furniture looks like a wardrobe, and at night it is transformed into a comfortable sleeping place;
  2. Variety of models - furniture developers have come up with several styles and types of similar models. It's easy to find an option in a vintage classic design or high-tech style. The outside surface of the product is sometimes decorated with mirrors, which visually increase the volume of the room. This technique is very successful for small rooms;
  3. Product functionality is at the core sleeping place the supports are special partitions, which transform into shelves when the bed is raised;
  4. With the help of a built-in bed, you can change the interior of the room by disassembling and assembling the sleeping area.

Along with the advantages, there are several disadvantages of the product:

  1. High cost - this is explained by the installation of expensive lifting mechanisms in the furniture structure. The price of a bed consists of several factors: the material of the product frame, upholstery, mattress, installed lifting mechanisms;
  2. The need for daily transformation of the bed;
  3. Unreliability of the lifting mechanism in low quality models. Some owners of such furniture have a fear that the bed may collapse at the most inopportune moment - when a person is sleeping;
  4. Unlike stationary furniture, you cannot sit on folding furniture at any moment. To rest, you have to take it apart.

Kinds

A bed that retracts into the wall or a closet is no different in appearance from an ordinary closet. Handles are installed at the bottom of the bed base and decorated to match the surrounding furniture.

The furniture industry produces two types of built-in products:

  • Horizontal;
  • Vertical.

The first option includes single and one-and-a-half-bed models. The dimensions of the sleeping place are made smaller than the overall size of the bed so that there is space in the upper part for shelves. They are used to store various things. Vertical lift beds are wider in width than horizontal ones. Taking into account the length and weight of the product, the model is mounted to the wall of the room. The wall must be strong and reliable to support the weight of the structure. Walls made of plasterboard sheets And cellular concrete won't fit. Modern methods production allow you to create various design options for furniture products.

Based on the type of design, the following types of folding beds are distinguished:

  • A bed with a vertical lifting mechanism, built into a closet with the headboard facing the wall;
  • Built-in bed with a horizontal mechanism with the side facing the wall;
  • A wardrobe-bed with sliding halves that cover the assembled bed.

Based on the type of bed, built-in beds are:

  • Single beds - characterized by a narrow mattress, ranging from 80-90 x 180-200 cm;
  • The semi-trucks are wider and can comfortably accommodate an adult or two children. Dimensions range from 120-140 x 180-200 cm;
  • Double - options that offer a full-fledged sleeping place with a width of 160-180 x 190-200 cm. You can choose an option that consists of two halves 70-95 cm wide;
  • Three-bedrooms - are a two-level design with an upper bed of 70-90 cm and a lower bed of 120-160 cm;
  • Two-tier - most often installed in children's rooms. The width of the products ranges from 80-120 cm, the length varies from 150 to 200 cm.

All of them are equipped with a spring or foam mattress. The furniture frame is made of medium density fiberboard (MDF) or laminated particle board (chipboard). Usage natural wood in lifting products increases the total weight of the structure, and therefore requires the installation of reinforced lifting mechanisms, which affects the cost of the furniture.

Folding bed

This kind upholstered furniture is in great demand. The main requirement is the practicality of the product. Folding beds within small room help create the image of a bedroom combined with a living room or children's room.

The strength of such products is their ability to simultaneously create comfort and save space. Furniture can be folded and disassembled, relieving the interior of congestion. The type of folding bed can be vertical or horizontal. A cleaned bed frees up space for doing other things.

In appearance, the folding design is completely different. In stores you can see how budget options, and quite expensive specimens. If you still can’t buy furniture for various reasons, then it’s easy to make it yourself. You just need to prepare it correctly required material and devices. To install the structure, the walls must be reliable and durable, made of material that can withstand heavy loads. Partitions or partitions made of plasterboard, as well as light wooden walls, cannot be used as a base for installing a folding bed.

Built-in cabinet

Beds built into wardrobes are divided into:

  • Double;
  • Single;
  • One and a half trucks.

Sometimes two beds are installed, built into the body of a furniture set. In small rooms they often use a wardrobe with a bed on it. lifting devices. The closet doors move apart, the bed lowers, while the headboard remains inside the closet by only three tens of centimeters, which is not a hindrance at all. The main disadvantage of this design is that opening the cabinet door blocks adjacent furniture. This is very inconvenient, because if you need to take something from the shelf, you will need to lift the bed again and close the wardrobe.

To avoid this, they came up with one trick - a wardrobe with triple doors, each of which has its own guide. All doors sliding along rails are moved to one extreme position, opening the bed for use and sections for linen or things. This design It is advisable to install in small rooms. However, open cabinet doors do not always have an aesthetic appearance.

No less interesting would be the model of a built-in bed in a closet. The result is a practical and multifunctional structure. During the day it can be used as furniture for relaxation, and at night you can sleep on a full double bed. Such furniture is convenient to place in the living room and hall.

There is always not enough space for games in a children's room. As your baby ages, he needs more and more free space. A folding bed in a wall or closet or a bed built into a closet is the only find for loving parents. On the back of the bed base you can securely attach photographs of children or any paintings. After lifting the base and placing it in a vertical position, the decorated surface of the imaginary wall will be revealed.

If two kids live in the apartment, it doesn’t matter, you can safely install two built-in beds at once so that you get a bunk model. In the lower tier you can mount drawers for linen, and in the design of the stairs leading to the upper bed, provide secret lockers. It will be convenient if the lifting mechanism is fixed on the side of the bed, then it will be easier to open it.

Hidden

The use of a hidden structure in the interior of an apartment is considered the most effective and convenient method of solving the shortage of square meters. Modern standard boxes occupy almost the entire area of the room. Because of this, there is no place to install other furniture, and there is simply no space left for everyday pastime. A hidden bed solves this problem.

The sleeping place is very quickly hidden in a special recess in the wall. Moreover, when assembled, it is almost no different from the surface of the entire wall or cabinet. Outer side hidden furniture selected according to the tone and quality of the surrounding material. The wall of furniture next to the bed will not be any different, but will look like a single whole. Designers have developed many practical ideas creating hidden furniture. For example, when raised, the bed turns into a shallow closet with shelves. Or an option when at the bottom of the product with outside is fixed large mirror, which in a vertical state increases the space of the room.

You can apply a drawing to the surface of the furniture or attach an original painting. They will serve as part of the interior decor of the room.

Transformer

A transformable bed that can be hidden in a wall or closet includes two types of furniture - this functional wardrobe and a comfortable sleeping place. When assembled, the bed does not interfere with anyone and is not visible. If necessary, the structure lowers and opens a sleeping bed on which you can rest. In addition, drawers for storing things are often added to the design of the bed.

There are bed models in which, when raised, the bottom transforms into a storage system. Here shelves can be folded down and hanger holders can be pulled out. After folding, things on hangers are neatly folded into a niche under the mattress.

The built-in transforming bed is a good decision use of free space in apartments with small living space. When choosing this type of furniture, before purchasing it, you should carefully study the types of transformable furniture products from various manufacturers.

Types of mechanisms

Furniture production does not stand still and is constantly evolving. Popular models become obsolete over time and are replaced by new ones, which also gain wide popularity. Beds built into walls and wardrobes have been around for long years do not give up their position and remain in demand. They gained their fame thanks to special mechanisms that allow them to be lifted vertically without special effort.

Lifting device – important element in the design of a transforming bed. Thanks to these modules, the entire structure, which weighs several tens of kilograms, can easily be lifted and turned into vertical fragment cabinet or wall. There are several lifting devices:

  • Manual method;
  • Spring mechanism;
  • Gas lift.

The first option is the cheapest, but also the most capricious, requiring periodic adjustments and some effort when lifting the furniture product. The mechanism does not contain additional springs or shock absorbers; lifting is performed entirely manually.

The second method is less labor-intensive. The spring version already contains special shock absorbers in the form coil springs allowing you to lift the base of the bed without much effort.

Coil springs are made of durable carbon steel wire. The service life of such mechanisms reaches 70 years, and this is with daily transformation of furniture. The only disadvantage of the device is the appearance of noise during operation. Springs may stretch over time and require replacement.

The third option is the most convenient and complex. The operation of the module is based on the action of piston devices filled with compressed air. When changing the position of the folding bed, the lifting mechanism smoothly changes the position of the furniture. In this case, you don’t need to make any special efforts, the device will do everything itself. A gas elevator is by far the most expensive of all types of devices.

There are device models equipped electric drive With remote control. This is a great way to transform furniture for people with disabilities or those who appreciate everything man-made.

Currently, as in the past, housing problem has not yet been fully resolved, especially in large cities where the cost square meter housing is breaking all records. Therefore, a multifunctional room layout that can transform it from a bedroom to a living room, game room, a dining room is still in demand in urban living conditions. Folding beds are installed even by residents who are not constrained by the small size of their apartments. This sleeping place is ideal for accommodating guests and relatives.

Despite this, furniture manufacturers have a very meager range of folding beds. This fact, obviously, can be explained by the fact that such furniture must be produced in conjunction with other interior elements, taking into account the design and layout of a particular room, which is impossible in the conditions mass production. As a rule, the installation of folding beds is carried out by small furniture teams working together with interior designers. For these purposes, they use universal designs, the production of which has been mastered by a number of foreign manufacturers.

Types of fasteners

Fastening such structures does not require special skills, it is correctly described in the attached instructions, so the main work when installing a folding bed is binding to a specific layout, built-in furniture, compliance with design proportions and installation instructions. This kind of work can be done with your own hands, without the help of specialists, especially if you already have experience assembling furniture.

When installing structural elements, it is necessary to carefully mark the mounting holes for fasteners to ensure the stability of the bed and facilitate the installation process.

The kit for making a folding bed along with fasteners and structural elements When installing a bed frame, gas shock absorbers or, as they are sometimes called, gas lifts are often included.

They facilitate the transformation process so much that even a child can disassemble and assemble such beds. Sometimes, in order to reduce weight, they choose frame structure beds made of light non-ferrous metals and non-metallic linear springs.

Which bed to choose

The first stage self-made a folding bed is the definition of it functional purpose. This can be a single or double bed for guests.

And also a transformable bed-sofa in a country house.

This could be a bed built into a wardrobe in a bedroom or children's room.

Then a suitable design is selected. The main elements of a folding bed are a box, a rotating device and a bed. Folding beds can be manufactured in vertical (the bed is folded across the length) and horizontal (along the length of the bed). The second option should be used when making a children's bed, as it requires less effort when tilting.

Self-assembly of the structure

Having chosen the appropriate design kit for a folding bed, they begin to assemble the box, the place where the bed is removed. The box must be securely attached to the wall and floor, otherwise, when assembled, the bed may suddenly fall; when disassembled, the structure of the box may tear off the wall. If the wall in the room is plasterboard, then it is necessary to use long fasteners that will pass through the plasterboard, securing it to the concrete or brick wall.

After installing the box, a bed is made, having thoroughly studied the equipment connecting elements and assembly instructions.

To make the bed of folding beds, solid wood or laminated chipboard. The first option is more reliable, environmentally friendly and lightweight material for the bed. Its only drawback is its higher cost. Geometric dimensions The beds are determined by the chosen mattress. Having cut the material, sawed it, marked the fastening points, they proceed to assembly. During installation, you should carefully check the reliability of all connections and perform additional gluing of structures, because during operation the folding bed will be constantly subjected to mechanical stress.

The last stage of collection is the installation of gas elevators, blockers for spontaneous reclining of the bed, and securing the mattress using special belts. Upon completion of this work, you can begin testing the mechanism. First of all, check for the absence of distortions and jamming during the process of folding and unfolding the bed. If there is noticeable resistance to the transformation mechanism, adjustments and adjustments are made to the installation elements. There is no need to rely on the expression “it will develop”; most likely, the mechanism will “loose” and “break” over time, thereby complicating further adjustment work. You should also check that there are no gaps in the legs of the unfolded, unloaded bed relative to the floor, if any, and make additional spacers. Before starting operation and thereafter, it is periodically necessary to lubricate the moving joints with grease or other thick oils. To increase the service life of the folding bed, it is necessary to constantly check the condition of the fastening elements and, if necessary, replace them.

Dear readers, if you have any questions, please ask them using the form below. We will be glad to communicate with you;)

If you want to properly use the space in the room, then you should get a folding bed. It will not take up much space, and if necessary, can instantly transform into a place to sleep or relax. In this article we will take a closer look at how to make a folding bed with your own hands. Such furniture will easily fit into a modern interior.

Types of folding beds

There are two types:

Vertical. The berth is placed perpendicular to the wall. This type is suitable for everyone, regardless of age and height. There are single, one and a half and double beds. Usually such beds are disguised as a tall wardrobe.

Horizontal. The bed is located along the wall. This furniture model is more suitable for children younger age, children or short people. Usually there are single rooms. They disguise the bed as a shelf or chest of drawers.

Advantages and disadvantages of lifting beds

The main advantages are:

The upholstery does not collect dust;

Doesn't take up enough space, you can save space in the room;

The furniture is completely inconspicuous when assembled; the frame is made in the form of a shelf, chest of drawers or cabinet.

Unfortunately, there are also shortcomings. It is impossible to move the bed to another place. This is because it is attached to a frame that is firmly attached to the wall and floor. If you want to make a bed without the help of others, then you will need a lot of physical effort, a lot of free time and at least a little experience in assembling furniture.

Preparing for the assembly process

Let's look at several features of the implementation of this modern idea. First, choose what kind of bed you want to make - horizontal or vertical. Decide on the material later. Fortunately, modern construction market offers big choice options. You can take natural wood, chipboard or MDF.

The main thing is to pay attention to technical properties. The material must be environmentally friendly, reliable and strong. It’s also worth choosing the tools for the job. If you don’t have an electric drill, a screwdriver, a screwdriver, a hammer, a saw, various drills, self-tapping screws, and screws at home, then it’s worth purchasing all of this. You will need them during work.

Vertical folding bed (we make it ourselves)

So, you got your hands on the materials and tools and sketched out your future furniture project. Now it’s worth deciding on the place where you will install the folding bed with your own hands. Drawings of the frame should be placed on the wall and the locations of its attachment should be indicated.

The furniture design includes a box, a berth and a ready-made lifting mechanism for a folding bed. Make a box in the form of a cabinet from natural wood with your own hands. Its size is calculated depending on the size of the bed. The main elements of the box are the stubborn shelf, baseboard, back wall, vertical and horizontal walls.

Here are the approximate characteristics of the box:

The depth of the frame is equal to the thickness of the mattress plus 32 cm;

The width of the box corresponds to the width of the mattress plus 16 cm;

The height of the frame is equal to the length of the mattress.

The wall to which the frame will be attached must be concrete or brick. The parts are fixed with screws at a distance of 25 cm.

The sleeping area consists of side boards, a backrest, a slatted base, a headboard and a mattress. The latter is secured with special straps. The bed and the box are connected to each other using a lifting mechanism. We recommend using a ready-made one with a gas spring. It will allow you to fix the structure in any position that is comfortable for you. So we made our own folding bed!

It is worth adding some details so that when folded it imitates a closet. For example, install shelves along the edges where you can place books, photos or souvenirs. Make cabinets at the bottom where bed linen will be stored. If you take into account all these tips, then it will not be difficult for you to assemble such furniture without the help of others.

Horizontal folding bed, assembled with your own hands

The design of this idea has the same main elements: a box, a bed and a lifting mechanism. The size of the frame that will hide the bed, in our case, will have a depth of 41 cm, length - 200 cm, height - 112 cm. The characteristics may be different, everything depends on the size of your mattress.

For the headboard, choose particle board 1.9 cm wide. Treat it with stain in advance. For the frame you will need 5.5 meters of timber. To assemble the bed, you will need the following components:

Four facing chipboards for side (1080x394x19 mm) and internal parts(1080x265x19 mm);

Two chipboards for the bed cover (2020x400x19 mm) and shelves (1010x400x19 mm);

Two chipboards for the bottom of the bed (1982x390x19 mm) and shelves (972x390x19 mm);

Two shelves for decorating a chest of drawers (980x310x19 mm);

Two bed rails (2000 mm);

Cornice (2020x992x19 mm).

We secure all elements with screws. The furniture is assembled in the same way as a vertical bed. Attach 13 cm long side rails along the perimeter of the frame so that the mattress does not move.

The price of this furniture in the showroom is very high, so a folding bed made with your own hands is a pressing project. After all self-assembly and installation will be much cheaper.

Nowadays, buying a home is the main problem that young people face when starting their families. Of course, everyone dreams of a spacious apartment, in which there will be enough space to lie on the sofa and sit in an armchair. However, not everyone can afford apartments that fit this description. And many people buy “small families” with a very small area. A do-it-yourself folding bed is exactly what you can use to save your square meters.

Advantages and disadvantages of folding beds

As you can already understand, thanks to a folding bed you can save a lot of your personal space. Its main priorities are the following indicators:

  • takes up little space;
  • does not collect dust on its upholstery, which can cause allergies;
  • when assembled, it is absolutely invisible, since the frame is made in the form of a cabinet.

However, before you ask the question: “how to make a folding bed?”, you also need to know about its disadvantages.

Unfortunately, they exist. The main disadvantage is that such a bed will be impossible to rearrange or move at any time. This is due to the fact that the bed itself is attached to the frame, and it, in turn, is securely attached to the wall, floor and even ceiling. In addition, self-assembly requires a lot of physical and mental effort, preparation time and minimal experience working with furniture. But still, if you implement this idea, then in the end you and your family will be happy.

Types of folding beds and materials for their manufacture

Since you have decided to install a folding bed at home, it will be useful for you to know that they come in two types:

  • The bed is longitudinally folding. Usually disguised as a tall cabinet and folded up. This type of bed is suitable for adults, since it will be very difficult for a child to physically lift such a mass.
  • Cross-folding bed. It resembles a shelf in a train carriage and disguises itself as a shelf for books or photographs. This bed is most often made as a single bed and is very suitable for children.

Horizontal folding bed

They can be made of wood or metal. For a horizontal folding bed with your own hands, it will be very convenient to use the armored part, attaching it to a metal frame.

How to make a folding bed yourself?

First, you need to decide on the place where the bed will be installed. Next, you should make a drawing and markings on the wall. On the markings it is necessary to highlight the dimensions and clearly indicate the places where the frame is attached. The bed on which adults will sleep must have a length of at least 190 centimeters, a width of about a meter and a frame height of 2 meters, since its lower part will serve as decor.

To build the frame, you will need blocks of dense wood, which will need to be fastened and installed in the place indicated in the drawing. When connecting the frame to the wall, be sure to use dowels. This is necessary in order to give the fastening more strength.

The lifting mechanism must be installed at the point where the bed connects to the fixed frame. You can use gas or coil springs as lifts.

Legs must be installed on the opposite side of the bed. They need to be attached to the bed using self-tapping screws, which are pre-lubricated with glue for greater reliability.

Bed decor

Here our folding bed is ready. All that remains is to decorate it, since when folded it should imitate a closet.

Alternatively, you can install shelves on the sides on which books, souvenirs or family photos will be placed. At the bottom of the bed you can make cabinets in which to store bed linen. On reverse side you can attach handles to the bed, identical to the handles on the cabinets.

In the end we get a beautiful bed that we made with my own hands. We saved space in the room and also decorated it. Besides self installation It cost us much less than buying exactly the same bed in a furniture store.

BED CABINET CASE

The basis of the cabinet for a built-in bed (Fig. 1) is a box of boards (pine) with a cross-section of 40×300 mm. Back wall The wardrobe for the folding bed is made of fairly thick plywood, fixed to the wall and holding the entire structure of the wardrobe-bed.

To prevent the bed from being visible when folded, folding shutters are used - such doors of different sizes can be purchased in the store.

Before you begin assembling the cabinet, prepare boards for the side walls with a length of 2230 mm, as well as blanks for the base and top crossbar with a length of -1700 mm.

This will ensure there are sufficient gaps inside the box on both sides between the cabinet walls and the bed. Determine exactly how much space is needed for the doors and hinges you have chosen and, based on this, adjust the dimensions of the cabinet body and saw the base board and top rail to size.

At the ends of the side walls, you need to select quarters according to the thickness of the base and top crossbar, as well as for the back wall.

Having assembled and glued the frame of the wardrobe-bed, make a shelf (Fig. 2) measuring 40x175x1600 mm, supporting the bed in the stowed position. Then attach the shelf from the inside to the base of the cabinet on three 40 mm thick supports so that its upper plane is at a height of 200 mm from the floor (Fig. 3).

For beauty, the lintel can be trimmed on top with decorative slats connected by a mustache.

BED MATTRESS BOX

The mattress box (a kind of lodgement) consists of a frame with dimensions of 100x1450x1980 mm and a plywood bottom attached to it with total dimensions of 20x1410x1940 mm (in two parts). To make it, take two side and two end walls with a length of 1980 and 1410 mm, respectively.

Make folds at the bottom ends of the side walls. Then, using glue and screws, assemble the frame, nailing the plywood bottom underneath.

Rice. 3. Cabinet design.

From pine timber with a cross-section of 40×100 mm, assemble two bed supports (Fig. 4) and attach them with hinges from below to the cradle so that approximately 150 mm remains to its edges. After exterior finishing Allow the assembly to dry and attach it to the cabinet body with three wide (75 mm) hinges.

FOLDING BED LOWERING MECHANISM

To make it easier to raise and lower the bed, spring mechanisms are often used, similar to those used in sofa beds (they can be purchased in the store). The proposed version provides a cable mechanism with pulleys and brackets made of steel strips 25 mm wide and 75-100 mm long.

BED BUILT INTO A CLOSET: FINAL WORK

For a bed closet, shutters with blinds are perfect, and in addition closed position they provide natural ventilation. If the doors (at least 2000 mm high) turn out to be slightly shorter than the cabinet, then install a threshold from below, across its body (see Fig. 2).

To fix the bed in the retracted position, one latch attached externally to the bottom is enough.

TO inside Attach the sides of the bed with two screws with semicircular heads and decorative washers, four nylon straps 25 mm wide, which will hold the mattress and bed dress when the bed is folded.

Sew Velcro or D-rings to the ends of the ribbons.

After final assembly If desired, the outside of the cabinet can be finished with veneer and varnished.
