Gluing vinyl wallpaper. The most convenient way to hang vinyl wallpaper. Why vinyl

When it comes to renovation, the question arises of how and with what to decorate the walls of apartment premises. The most optimal choice Will wallpaper it. It is best to choose vinyl ones, because they have a large number of advantages and are also very attractive in appearance. They have long term service, basically all kinds of wallpaper data are easy to clean. Some can only be wiped with a damp cloth to remove any resulting dust, while others can be wetted and even cleaned with a sponge. In order to choose exactly the detergents, it is best to consult a competent seller of a specialized store. Or you can inspect the packaging yourself and find identification marks that indicate the degree of resistance to moisture.

Immediately before hanging vinyl wallpaper, difficulties arise, namely, what tools you need to have in order to easily hang wallpaper, what stages the gluing process includes, how to properly prepare the walls, and many other similar nuances. This article will reveal the answers to these questions.

Required Tools

Before you begin the gluing process itself, you need to make sure that all the tools are available and prepare them so that they are at hand at all times.

You will need the following tools:

  • a special brush used to prime the walls;
  • brush and roller for coating wallpaper glue mixture;
  • a special lint-free roller is necessary for rolling seams;
  • a special soft spatula for evenly smoothing the canvas;
  • masking tape;
  • cotton napkins or rags to eliminate excess glue that has come out;
  • tassel small size will be needed to lubricate the wallpaper;
  • a stationery knife for even cutting, scissors will not work;
  • a spatula or wooden spatula for pressing and straightening uneven areas in small areas.

With these tools, wallpapering will be easier and more convenient. The main thing is to have them on hand.

Preparing the walls

There is no need to ignore this point, since preparing the walls is an important step. Thanks to competent and thorough preparation of the walls, the wallpaper will stick for a long time, and delight with your beautiful view.

Initially, you need to remove a layer of old wallpaper, if any. After which it is necessary to prime the walls, it is best if this is done using a special primer that is aimed at deep penetration. If suddenly there is no such thing, then diluted adhesive mass will cope with this task. After the walls are primed, they need to be coated with a special product that prevents the occurrence of fungi and the development of microbes.

After time has passed, when all the layers have dried, professionals advise drawing a line the entire height of the wall and using it as a guide for gluing the first strip. You should not focus on the corner of the room, as it may be uneven, which may cause problems with the drawing. To be 100% sure that the drawn line is perfectly straight, you need to use a special building level.

As soon as everything preparatory stages the walls are finished, it is necessary to isolate the premises from current and remove all existing sockets and switches. This will allow the canvas to lie perfectly on the wall surface. There is no need to neglect this and do it as before, just cut a hole for this or that element. This will result in an uneven pattern and all the beauty of the canvas will be lost.

Important! Vinyl wallpaper should always be glued only to well-dried walls. For reliability, you can attach polyethylene to the prepared wall for a day using masking tape and if after this time moisture has formed on it, then this means that the wall requires more time to dry.

The room where Finishing work it is necessary to isolate from the air flow, namely, tightly close all windows and doors, turn off heaters and air conditioners. You can ventilate the room only after the vinyl wallpaper has dried thoroughly.

Step-by-step instructions for gluing vinyl wallpaper

How to glue vinyl wallpaper on non-woven backing?
Non-woven vinyl wallpaper has a number of features that you should know:

  • apply glue only to the wall;
  • there is no need to allow gaps when applying the adhesive solution, and its layer should be thick;
  • gluing should be done from an even angle;
  • wallpaper is glued only end-to-end and not in any other way;
  • The strip applied to the wall must be smoothed strictly from the center to the edges.

The non-woven base contains a large amount of cellulose, making the fabric denser and heavier. To properly glue such canvases, it is better to use glue for vinyl wallpaper on a non-woven basis. On store shelves it is referred to as vinyl glue. It is produced on the basis of methylcellulose and is completely PVC-free. As a rule, it is considered universal and is suitable for any type of vinyl wallpaper.

If you plan to glue this type of wallpaper in a room with high humidity, then it is better to purchase polyvinyl acetate glue. It will ensure reliable adhesion and long service life.

Required time to dry non-woven vinyl wallpaper

Wallpaper with non-woven backing has different terms drying. First of all, it depends on the manufacturing method. For example, wallpaper made using hot embossing requires an average temperature of approximately 25 degrees and a humidity of no more than 60% to dry completely. Then you should wait 48 hours until it dries completely.

If the canvas has decorative finishing, then they may require a longer period, in some cases a week.

Rules for gluing paper-based vinyl wallpaper

The key to success in gluing vinyl wallpaper on paper based lies in the correct choice of glue. It is important that its composition is of high quality, this will avoid the formation of bubbles and unevenness. And it will also serve them for a long time. It is best to choose glue from foreign manufacturers. They certainly have a higher price category, but the costs will definitely pay off high quality. It is important that the adhesive mass has the ability to quickly set to the surface, but not instantly.

The glue must contain compounds that are aimed at preventing the formation of mold and fungi.

High-quality glue has the following characteristics:

  • when the adhesive mass is diluted, no lumps or clots of unknown origin should appear; if this occurs, then it is better not to use it, as this can lead to unevenness;
  • does not dry out after a day;
  • can be stored for years in an unopened package;
  • must not contain harmful substances;
  • easy preparation of the mixture.

Before gluing paper-based vinyl wallpaper, you need to carefully level the wall surface.

Divided into types:

  • putty;
  • plaster;
  • drywall.

The stages of gluing wallpaper with a paper backing are no different from other types of vinyl wallpaper.

Drying wallpaper with paper backing

How quickly this type of wallpaper dries depends on many factors. First of all, a significant point is the well-dried, prepared surface of the walls. If it was not dry, then the drying time of the wallpaper will be increased several times.

The best option is if the room temperature is approximately 20 degrees and the humidity is no more than 70%. If the temperature is lower and the humidity is high, then you will have to wait quite a long time for the walls to dry. In addition, this can lead to peeling and deformation of the canvas.

Important! It is possible to ventilate and carry out further finishing work only after the coating has completely dried.

In order for the wall to remain beautiful after pasting and the vinyl covering to hold tightly, you must follow simple rules:

  • An important nuance of vinyl wallpaper with rapport is that they should be glued joint to joint, creating a pattern. You need to glue directly if the markings on the package contain arrows located opposite each other. Otherwise, offset pasting is assumed. The distance in centimeters by which the touching strips must be shifted is indicated on the packaging.
  • Before gluing, you need to choose the right glue. It could be special composition for vinyl wallpaper, if the base is non-woven. For a paper base, ordinary adhesive mass is sufficient. The main thing is that it has a fairly viscous consistency.
  • The canvases are glued to the wall from top to bottom. First, the section is pressed along the longitudinal axis. Then you need to expel excess glue and air to the sides. To do this, use a roller or dry, clean rag.
  • The edges are coated especially carefully. A high-quality counter-joint requires that the joints are rolled with a special narrow rubber roller or pressed with rags. Removing glue means ridding the walls of stains.

Besides general rules The type of vinyl wallpaper base influences how it is glued. This can be paper or non-woven fabric. And if in the first case the canvas is lighter, then non-woven vinyl wallpaper, which has a foamed relief coating, is heavy and thick, and this must be taken into account.

Features depending on the base

What is the best way to glue vinyl wallpaper?

The choice depends on the type of material that forms the base of the vinyl sheets. If it is paper, you can use PVA glue, but it is difficult to achieve quality, since the strips will slowly slide under their own weight. The use of paste is also not recommended, since the substance of flour and starch is a suitable environment for the life of microorganisms. So how to glue wallpaper so that it does not move away from the wall?

Non-woven base

Specialized mixtures are used, which include modified starch. To prevent mold from appearing, components are used that, in addition to their antiseptic effect, increase viscosity and adhesive ability.

Paper based

It is allowed to use adhesives for paper wallpaper. But this is when there are no foam relief elements on the surface of the canvas that weigh down the wallpaper. If painting is intended, this method will not work. But when we're talking about On a surface with a colored pattern, wallpaper glue can be used.

IMPORTANT! The glue consumption is usually indicated on the glue packaging. But this depends on the type of surface and the base of the wallpaper. The average consumption is 180g of dry matter per 4-5 rolls.

Tools

To perform all the necessary actions, you need to have on hand:

  • utensils for preparing glue;
  • rollers for squeezing out excess glue and air;
  • plastic film to cover the floor;
  • dry rags to ensure cleanliness;
  • narrow rollers for rolling counter joints;
  • wallpaper knife, pencil or ballpoint pen;
  • measuring ruler and guide for cutting strips;
  • a wide spatula, which is useful for adjusting the canvas;
  • special corner rubber roller for rolling internal corners.

All this must be prepared before gluing vinyl wallpaper, regardless of the type of base.

Preparation

Before performing the final interior decoration, you need to do the following:

  1. Decide on the selection of vinyl wallpaper and glue.
  2. Prepare surfaces.
  3. Remove all consequences of repairs.
  4. Turn off the electricity.
  5. Remove the covers of sockets and switches.
  6. Buy the necessary tool.

In addition, before gluing wallpaper, you need to familiarize yourself with the recommendations for diluting glue and preparing wall surfaces.

How to dilute glue correctly?

Dry granules are poured into water. The solution is constantly mixed manually or using a special attachment on a drill or screwdriver. Cooking instructions are on the packaging. The main thing is that you don’t need to knead the whole pack. Sufficient quantity for three or four stripes.

Surface preparation

You cannot glue vinyl wallpaper over paint, old wallpaper, or polystyrene foam. The canvas will not adhere to OSB, tiles and laminated panels. Concrete walls suitable, but if they are uneven, the defects are eliminated with putty. On plasterboard structures the strips are glued without preliminary preparation if the surface is clean. Before gluing, you need to remove any residue:

  • old wallpaper;
  • lime;
  • paints or whitewashes;
  • oil stains and dirt;
  • everything is unnecessary.

You need to clean it as thoroughly as possible, right down to removing the plaster and applying a new layer. The surface must be coated with a primer.

Wall gluing technology

When cutting strips, you need to take into account the presence of a pattern. If it is necessary to glue with a shift, take into account the margin that is laid in order to adjust the pattern. The strips are glued end to end without overlap. If the base is non-woven fabric, there is no need to coat the stripes. The sequence of actions comes down to four stages.

What to do with hard-to-reach places?

The technology for gluing external and internal corners is a specific process that involves the use special means. When gluing walls around window (door) openings and behind radiators, you need to measure and cut out the necessary pieces in advance.

The photo shows a diagram of gluing wallpaper around sockets and switches:

The photo shows a diagram of wallpapering behind the radiator:

Step-by-step instructions for gluing the ceiling

Strips of vinyl wallpaper are glued from the window to the entrance. Direction – across the length of the room. The technology is similar, but has a number of features.

Video guide step by step

For clarity, it makes sense to watch a specially filmed video that describes in detail how to glue vinyl wallpaper to the wall and ceiling.

The premises must remain closed throughout the day. A draft leads to overdrying. Forced heating is also undesirable, and the use of air heaters is prohibited. Within a day it will be possible to open windows and doors. But if it’s cold outside and the room is not heated, you’ll have to wait 2-3 days.

Having done everything as described above, anyone can hang vinyl wallpaper with my own hands, and save money.

At the end of the last century, they were first invented, which the average person really liked. But unfortunately, experts in this field were quite skeptical, arguing that, unlike paper wallpaper, these wallpapers do not allow air to pass through. And this has a bad effect on the walls. Our developers do not stand still, so not so long ago they invented universal look wallpaper that has a double layer and at the same time breathes well. Of course, this is vinyl wallpaper. Many people are afraid to buy them because they don’t know how to take care of vinyl wallpaper and what to combine with it. It's very unfortunate that this happens. Because they have great qualities.

Basic composition and important characteristic qualities

Before you start pasting, you need to buy the material and in order to figure out what kind of wallpaper to buy, it is advisable to know its composition. The fact is that there are two types of vinyl wallpaper: non-woven and paper. The difference between them is small - both paper and fabric allow air to pass through perfectly, so it doesn’t matter what basis you use.

Other characteristic qualities are much more important. As you know, we considered only one layer, but vinyl products are two-layer. So, the second layer is polyvinyl chloride. This name scares many, but in fact it just means a decorative outer layer that has beneficial properties: repelling fat, salt and moisture, as well as resisting acids and alkalis.

The polyvinyl chloride layer is of the following types:

  • Silkscreen printing. This type has a very solid appearance, as it resembles silk and is able to reflect incident light. This happens because in upper layer Silk elements are woven in. In turn, according to texture, silk-screen printing is divided into textured texture and smooth texture. Designers note the exceptional similarity of silk-screen printing with textile wallpaper, perfectly combined with many interior designs. In addition, silk-screen printing is protected from fading when exposed to direct sunlight.

  • Foamed. They are made by printing (stenciling) and heat treatment, due to which the vinyl base foams and acquires a special texture. Despite the unusual texture, experts note the excessive fragility of such a coating; it is especially reckless to glue such wallpaper in children's rooms, where children are unlikely to be careful when handling wall decoration. Foam samples are not wear-resistant, if there is a pet living in the apartment that likes to sharpen its sharp claws not only on the scratching post, but also on hard surfaces - just one scratch can lead to the removal of an entire layer of coating.
    This does not mean at all that the foam material is completely unsuitable for gluing to walls, it just requires careful handling and care.

  • Hot stamping. The pattern is pressed in using heat.

All vinyl products are high-class washable. They can be glued in any room, even in the bathroom and kitchen, because vinyl withstands perfectly high humidity air and high temperature. This type of wallpaper can hide all the imperfections, irregularities, etc. that the wall plane has. Common defects include wall bevels and cracks in the plaster.

Gluing vinyl wallpaper on a non-woven backing is beneficial in rooms where it is necessary to achieve a wall-leveling effect. But remember that you still need to properly prepare the wall structure for the interlining, achieve maximum surface uniformity, and only after that start gluing.

Caring for the non-woven finish is quite simple - lightly dampen a soft cloth in water and walk over the wallpaper without pressing. During the cleaning process, an ordinary damp cloth may be useful, preferably one without aggressive components, which, for example, includes alcohol. Small deposits and cobwebs can be easily removed with a vacuum cleaner without an attachment.

Vinyl coating is especially loved by designers and creative people with good artistic taste, who prefer to carry out repairs with their own hands. The process of pasting vinyl wallpaper often turns into a real art, allowing you to decorate a room as you wish.

Is it possible to paint vinyl wallpaper?

Please note that today there are individual copies of vinyl wallpaper on sale that are intended for subsequent painting. The manufacturer assures that such samples can be painted up to 15–20 times, and they will not lose their high-quality surface. We would not recommend carrying out such bold experiments, but the vinyl coating will withstand 2-3 stains in any case.

To avoid getting into trouble, check with your sales consultant about the type of vinyl wallpaper, each of which, as a rule, has a number of features for use and gluing.

Main principles of gluing

Preparing the wall surface

Vinyl wallpaper, so that it turns out to be of sufficient quality, beautiful and correct, you will learn from the description below. First of all, you need to prepare the wall. If it has large cracks, potholes and other defects must be removed. You also need to remove the old wallpaper and remove the excess layer of putty, then dry it well.

How to choose putty for filling cracks? Everything is simple here - choose a composition that does not contain PVA, for example, the Vetonit putty mixture has proven itself well. Apply the material gradually, laying out thin layers, as if forming a cake, each time leave time for the previous layer to dry.

In order to check the percentage of readiness of the wall, you can stick a piece of simple tape to it, wait a couple of minutes and tear it off. If there are traces of plaster on the surface of the tape, it means the wall is not ready yet. There is another option: stick a small piece of cling film overnight, if the next morning swellings form under it - the wall has moisture.

After complete drying wall structure walk over the surface with sandpaper and leave the room for ventilation with open windows and a balcony for 1 week. Next, the wall needs to be treated with either a primer or wallpaper glue (use high-quality Moment or Kelid glue). It is advisable to process work surface antifungal agent. The quality of the pasting will depend on how the wall is prepared for work.

If your goal is to achieve a neutral tone, use exclusively pigmented products in a neutral shade.

Preparing wallpaper and tools

Before gluing wallpaper on vinyl based, you need to carefully prepare the necessary construction equipment. To work you will need:

  • A good solid wide spatula.
  • Bucket.
  • A not too hard household brush or a piece of unnecessary rags.
  • A brush for applying adhesive.
  • Well sharpened knife.
  • Roller and brush (to apply glue).
  • Scissors that fit comfortably in your hand.
  • Rubber roller (smooth wallpaper).
  • Pencil.
  • Tape measure or meter.
  • Glue.

A large, flat surface on which you can place all the necessary tools and wallpaper. This could be a table or a clean floor.

At first, it may seem that decorating walls with vinyl wallpaper is an overwhelming task for you. However, experts assure that non-woven fabric is a pliable material, which cannot be said about thin wallpaper made of paper. Hanging vinyl wallpaper on a paper base requires skill and patience; it will no longer be possible to do without the assistance of an assistant.

When buying glue in a store, focus on a high-quality adhesive composition, the label of which includes this type of wallpaper. The desire to save extra money and glue the vinyl material with the glue that you already have at home may disappoint you with the final result. It also happens that such negligence leads to the rapid peeling of the strips and the need for regular wall finishing.
After preparing the equipment and materials, you can proceed directly to the gluing process itself.

How to stick wallpaper on a wall correctly?

Dilute the glue in the ratio as indicated in the instructions, but after you prepare the wallpaper.

Each roll of vinyl wallpaper has specific instructions that must be followed unconditionally. Wallpaper needs to be cut to the length of the wall, but with the addition of ten centimeters. This is needed for overlap. For example, the height of the surface to be pasted is 2.4 m, which means you cut off 2.5 m.

In the event that they have a pattern or something similar that needs to be selected, you will have to apply each cut piece to the next one. You need to connect the images first and only then cut them. Thus, continue to do so. To create a single design, it is easier to work with 2-3 rolls at once. It is recommended to cut the wallpaper in such quantities that there are no more than ten sheets; they must be carefully stacked on top of each other in the order in which the pattern was selected. It must be folded face down.

By the way, before cutting the wallpaper into strips, it is advisable to check how well they match each other. It happens that when shopping in the turmoil, by chance, among all the rolls of the same pattern, you come across 1-2 that do not correspond to the chosen pattern. If the strips have already been cut, it will no longer be possible to return the rolls to the store, and you will have to spend additional money on purchasing the missing wallpaper.

When working with glue, be careful: under no circumstances should the glue get on the front side. Please note that vinyl wallpaper adhesive must swell for ten minutes before being applied. As a rule, glue is applied to both the wallpaper and the wall. But, as for vinyl, there are varieties in which only the wallpaper surface is smeared with glue. You will find this information in each package.

Craftsmen note better adhesion of the coating if the strips of material are well coated along the edges. Also, the finish will last longer if you glue vinyl wallpaper on a paper base, covering both the stripes and the wall with adhesive. Gluing vinyl wallpaper on a non-woven base requires applying glue only to the wall surface.

Secrets of high-quality vinyl flooring

Since you need to glue vinyl ones end to end, try not to stretch them. Wait for the primer to dry and start gluing. In order for the vertical to be positioned correctly, draw a line along the level to guide you. You need to start gluing from the corner located near the window, but do not touch the corner itself or stick it with an overlap.

So, apply glue to the wallpaper, connecting them with the greased side, and only then, if necessary, smear the wall.

This is necessary so that the glue has time to swell directly on the wallpaper, and also to speed up the work process. Please note that the wall must be coated immediately before contact with the material.

The canvas is pressed to the surface and, starting from the top, gently roller down. Try to remove all the formed bubbles and emptiness. But do this carefully, as it is important that vinyl wallpaper adhesive does not get on it, otherwise it may leave stubborn stains.

It is advisable to fix the first stripe directly next to window opening, this cunning trick will hide joints and seams. For beginners who are faced with gluing vinyl wallpaper for the first time, it is more convenient to first draw a vertical line on the wall with a pencil, and, focusing on it, start gluing.

Taping corners and hard-to-reach places

Of course, it is clear that in corner areas it is impossible to glue wallpaper end-to-end, so there are several ways to correct this shortcoming. It is possible to glue them in the corner with an overlap. To do this, you need to put one centimeter on the other side, which will be covered with another cloth. But this option is only suitable for plain and small-patterned wallpaper. This is the simplest method, although it requires special glue.

More labor intensive, but worth it, the following method is considered: apply wallpaper on each opposite side with an overlap of three centimeters. After they are thoroughly dry, you need stationery knife cut two sheets simultaneously strictly vertically. Those parts that you cut off must be removed, and the edges of the canvases must be bent and glued. The seam turns out perfect.

Few people know how to properly glue vinyl wallpaper behind a radiator, because it is very difficult process. Some people don’t fool around and simply paint it over to match the wallpaper. Of course, this is not very aesthetically pleasing, so here are our recommendations especially for those who prefer wallpaper. To do this, they are cut into small strips approximately 10–20 cm wide and glued using a small roller.

To trim the edges of the wallpaper at the top and bottom, as a rule, a special triangular ruler is used, which has cutting properties. If there is none, then using a regular triangle and a stationery knife, make even cuts.

The most frequently asked question is: how to glue vinyl-based wallpaper in the area of sockets and switches. Everything is much simpler than it seems.

Before you start working in this area, you need to turn off the power supplies and remove the plastic trims. You should not cut the wallpaper in advance. Glue them as is, and before rolling them with a roller, make a cut and cut the wallpaper along the hole, level the surface. After drying a little, secure the platbands.

Another important problem that arises during repairs is door and window openings. When you have reached the opening, you can trim the canvas from the bottom to the top of the door (window) crossbar, then press it tightly and roll it. Cut off everything unnecessary and continue gluing based on the previous one.

Heavy vinyl is much more difficult to glue, but it is possible. Firstly, they need special glue, and secondly, they have a significant drawback: while spreading the glue, they stretch greatly, and during the drying process, on the contrary, they narrow. Therefore, if you have chosen this type of vinyl wallpaper, contact specialists for advice.

Gluing vinyl sheets with your own hands is quite a troublesome task, but it is quite possible to cope with if you prepare the surface well and study all the nuances of such wallpaper repairs.

Advantages and disadvantages

They are produced in the form of rolls with a base made of paper canvas or higher quality and durable non-woven fabric, with a decorative layer of vinyl on top (officially polyvinyl chloride).

This coating has several varieties, but they are all famous for a number of common advantages:

  • strength (thanks to two layers of canvas, it is almost impossible to tear the vinyl when gluing or already on the wall);
  • durability (stays well on the wall for up to 10 years, maintaining its original brightness);
  • moisture resistance (some types of vinyl can be wiped with a cloth and even washed);
  • versatility (you can choose a coating for any interior, find an imitation of any coating - wood, fabric, brick, etc.).

Among the disadvantages of vinyl are toxicity, airtightness and difficult repairs, but in reality, not everything is so dangerous.

Toxic fumes after finishing can only appear on wallpaper of dubious quality - proven non-woven vinyl is absolutely safe for health.

This coating is also highly breathable, unlike heavier paper backings that can encourage the growth of mold and mildew.

Features of gluing different types of material

Where to start gluing vinyl wallpaper?

Many will say that from a window or from a wall and they will be almost right. But in fact, you need to start by choosing the type of vinyl sheet.

On the repair market you can find several subtypes of this coating, each with its own characteristics.

  • Structural (with a layer of foamed vinyl). This type of wallpaper is usually used to paste over uneven walls, as well as wood, plywood, fiberboard. The canvas helps smooth out all unevenness and defects and creates a spectacular play of light on the surface;
  • Hot stamping (heavy and compact vinyl). Such dense wallpapers are available in the most unusual colors and textures. They perfectly hide all the unevenness of the walls and last as long as possible without losing their original appearance;
  • Silkscreen printing. These rolls are produced on a paper basis. Gluing such wallpaper with your own hands is not an easy process: heavy silk-screen canvases must be glued end-to-end, without overlap, and, moreover, when dry, they can shrink. But they are very durable, resistant to abrasion, and always look expensive and stylish;
  • Washable. This type of vinyl is commonly used for kitchen renovations;
  • Solid (evaporated). Consists of three layers of paper and evaporated vinyl, often used for painting.

Preparing for wallpaper repair

How to properly glue vinyl wallpaper with your own hands and what is needed for this?

You need to start by preparing a base for repairs - get rid of all traces of the old wall covering: greasy, dirty wallpaper, crumbling putty and plaster.

Even if you plan to cover the wall with embossed vinyl wallpaper, it is necessary to smooth out large cracks and bumps with putty, and also prime the surface so that the vinyl lies tightly and does not peel off.

If wide vinyl wallpaper is used to decorate the walls, then it is important to ensure a perfectly flat surface.

Before gluing vinyl wallpaper with your own hands, you need to prepare:

  • sharp scissors or a special wallpaper knife;
  • pencil, pendant with a piece of chalk, ruler;
  • a wide brush for glue and a thin brush for joints;
  • wallpaper (plastic) spatula and rubber roller (smooth heavy fabrics);
  • clean dry cotton cloth;
  • damp sponge;
  • a bucket for glue and the glue itself;
  • stepladder;
  • several old newspapers.

Before gluing vinyl wallpaper with your own hands, you also need to turn off the power to the room and close all windows and doors tightly so that there are no drafts in the room.

Then you need to properly prepare the glue and cut the wallpaper. Special glue for vinyl wallpaper is diluted according to the instructions and wait until the solution swells.

In the meantime, you need to prepare the wallpaper strips: cut the roll into separate sheets along the length with an allowance of 10 cm, lay them out on old newspapers, spread them with wallpaper glue and leave them to “ripen” for 7-10 minutes.

Vinyl wallpapering: technology of work

How to properly glue vinyl wallpaper in a room with your own hands? It is best to do this together - with a reliable assistant.

First, you need to use a hanger to draw a vertical line on the wall - the first strip will be glued along it.

The process of gluing wallpaper will look like this: one person takes the wallpaper soaked in glue by the upper part and gives it to a partner standing on a stepladder.

He places a piece of vinyl roll on the wall, unrolls the panel and aligns the wallpaper.

It is necessary to glue vinyl only end-to-end, even minimal overlaps strictly prohibited.

Then the strip needs to be smoothed with a rubber roller or spatula.

A spatula is ideal for smooth canvas; a roller is used for foamed vinyl and other embossed wallpaper so as not to damage the pattern.

Where to start smoothing the canvas to expel trapped air and remove excess glue? It is better to move from the center to the edges from top to bottom to squeeze out all the bubbles.

Excess glue must be quickly removed with a cloth so that it does not get on the front side of the wallpaper.

It is better to cut off the excess wallpaper that remains below after drying, otherwise the wet canvas will wrinkle and may even tear.

Wide vinyl wallpaper is glued using the same pattern as strips of standard width.

The only caveat is that if you choose wide wallpaper, then it is convenient to use 2 stepladders when working. This will ensure perfect alignment of the wallpaper on the walls and make it easier to lay them end to end.

Where to start wallpapering?

It is better to lay vinyl sheets on the wall from the corner of the wall, perpendicular to the window; light, wide sheets - from the window in the direction of the incident light.

This will allow you to glue the wallpaper exactly end-to-end, clearly connect the pattern and create the effect of a seamless coating.

We glue vinyl wallpaper in problem areas

If the process of gluing the walls themselves heavy vinyl looks quite clear, then how to glue vinyl wallpaper in problem areas and where to start work?

The most difficult areas for DIY wallpaper repair are corners, the space behind the radiator, and socket-switches.

Where to start wallpapering the corners with your own hands and how to do it - end-to-end or overlapping?

In order for the corners to look beautiful and not lose their appearance after drying, you need to follow a special scheme.

We glue two panels onto the corners with an overlap of 2-3 cm (if the corners are uneven, you can increase it to 5 cm).

Then, using a sharp stationery knife, cut both pieces vertically - along a ruler or a long spatula.

Carefully remove the top unnecessary strips, bend the edges of both canvases, coat them with glue, lay them back on the wall, connect the pattern and roll with a roller (spatula).

After drying, the corners will remain perfectly straight.

It is not necessary to lay vinyl completely behind the batteries - it is enough to seal 15-20 cm on both sides.

If you absolutely want to decorate the area behind the radiator with wallpaper, then you can cut the pieces of canvas into several narrow pieces - this will make the work easier, especially if wide wallpaper is used for decoration.

Places for sockets and switches, when covering walls with vinyl wallpaper, need to be cut only on the wall - if you make holes in advance, they may simply not coincide with the actual outlet.

Mark on the pasted strip Right place, make crosswise cuts and bend the corners inward.

How to glue vinyl wallpaper: independent work from A to Z"

Vinyl samples have earned popularity for their beauty, durability, easy care and quick gluing. And the question of how to glue vinyl wallpaper can be solved effectively. How to do this with your own hands efficiently and quickly? Why this particular type of painting? This is what my article is about!

I chose vinyl material because:

  1. Such canvases are indispensable in damp rooms.
  2. If you stick them on uneven walls, these defects will become invisible.
  3. Caring for vinyl is easy.
  4. Durability is high.
  5. There are samples of any type: from imitation stone to silk-screen printing.

Convinced you of your choice? Now all that remains is to decide on the texture and color, and prepare for pasting with your own hands. Remember, moving towards a goal begins with preparation. So:

Preparing for work

Calculation of material consumption and preparation of walls is the first stage of repair.

Calculation required quantity I do this:

  • I determine the height to the ceiling from the floor baseboard;
  • I measure the length of all walls;
  • I multiply this amount by the height;
  • subtract the area of the windows and doorways;
  • I divide the total by the area of 1 roll.

You should always buy more material so that the pasting ensures the pattern matches. To do this, I determine the distance between it: if it is 10 cm, then I add 5 cm to the strip. In this case, each roll should be checked for shade matching. An extra strip will help with minor repairs: if, for example, a cat tears the material.

The instructions on the roll indicate which glue is needed. this species wallpaper

Walls with wallpaper

So, foamed vinyl is popular because it masks wall defects. This will make it easier to prepare them before gluing the vinyl sheets.

First, I got rid of the old finish: I cleaned off both the paint and the crumbling plaster. It is easier to glue the sheets onto drywall: it is initially smooth and does not require tedious leveling (if the seams are puttied). After all, wall curvatures of more than 1 cm must be leveled!

Then you need to turn off the electricity for the entire time of pasting and remove sockets and switches so as not to interfere.

Let's move on to the next stage - find out how to cover the walls with vinyl wallpaper.

We work with non-woven base

Finishing with this type is also available to beginners, because the interlining does not get wet and therefore does not shrink when the glue dries.

The level (plumb line) will give the vertical where we want to stick the first canvas.

Preparation of glue

Wallpaper glue usually comes with instructions. By the way, saving on mortar often spoils expensive repairs. So which glue is better? I chose from expensive ones, special for vinyl, heavy materials.

The proportions of the ratio of water and powder strictly correspond to the instructions:

  • Pour the powder a small amount water.
  • Stir the mixture for 3 minutes with a regular mixer (I don’t have special attachments for a drill). This home appliance did an excellent job of crushing all the lumps.
  • Next you need to add required amount water and stir the suspension with a wooden spatula.
  • Then leave the solution to swell for the time specified by the manufacturer.

Gluing stripes

  • You only need to cover the wall with glue and leave the canvas dry. So, the question of whether the wallpaper needs to be coated with glue is answered negatively for a non-woven base. This means that the process is less labor-intensive, and we also save glue.

Beginners should not rush into work. I recommend doing everything carefully, because the solution that has slightly dried out on the wall can be refreshed, and the unevenly placed canvas can be torn off and glued again.

  • We coat only a strip of the wall for the first canvas. For the corners, we also use glue to mark the edges of the non-woven base so that the wallpaper holds more firmly.

  • You need to attach the material from top to bottom, and it was more convenient with an assistant: someone glues it, and someone supports the canvas. It will be especially convenient to work with an assistant if it is meter wallpaper, because they are significantly (twice) wider than the usual half-meter samples.

  • Then use a roller to smooth the canvas from the center to the edges to squeeze out excess glue and air. Often, when gluing it to the ceiling, part of the canvas comes off, which means that it needs to be coated more.

  • Try to glue the canvases end-to-end so that vertical tubercles do not form at all points of their connection.

  • We coat the joints with a concentrated solution, and roll the rubber over them with pressure.

  • Corners are especially labor-intensive; they should be glued especially carefully and slowly.

  • At corners, you can use the “into the corner” or “through the corner” technique. For example, on an overlapping 5 cm allowance of the canvas glued close to the corner, glue a strip for the second wall. Then, running a knife over it double joint, connect them.

During gluing, avoid drafts so that the material dries evenly.

Finally, trimming

When the wallpaper is dry, apply a long ruler, construction knife trim off excess fabric: first at the ceiling, then at the floor. Moreover, the bottom can be run directly under the baseboard (wherever possible).

Then you need to cut holes for switches and sockets. First, crosswise from the center, then cut off the edge.

Now you can install previously removed boxes on sockets and switches that were de-energized when wallpapering.

Pasting the paper backing

The rules for gluing samples on a paper base are a little more complicated due to possible damage to the material when wet from the glue.

Among important advice In the case of how to properly glue vinyl wallpaper, there is a recommendation for priming the walls. After all, it is precisely this (especially antifungal) that is needed under vinyl on paper to ensure its durability. The non-woven base itself will protect itself from mold.

The price of wallpaper with a paper base is affordable, but their installation is more difficult: they are heavier, so they sometimes break and tear. However, the gluing is the same, and such dense samples better hide wall defects.

  • We also apply glue to the canvas with a flat brush.

The absorption time is indicated on the roll by the manufacturer and should be followed with each sheet. Otherwise, one strip will stretch more strongly, the second - less, which will result in a skew.

  • We start from the corner and from the top, align it vertically (a line drawn with a plumb line with a pencil), then press it in the center with a roller and along the entire length.
  • We expel the air and glue, roll the edges, moving the roller to the sides from the center. You can smooth it with your hand, but it’s more effective with a roller.

  • Remove any glue that has come out around the edges with a dry cloth.
  • We coat the prematurely dried edges with a thin brush.

If the fabric has stretched, when it dries, a gap sometimes appears at the joint. Here we will apply glue again and lightly stretch the wet fabric, because foamed vinyl is elastic.

Vinyl wallpaper takes 2 days to dry.

You can quickly and effectively update your interior using polymer stickers. It is easier to install than a large roll cut. Such samples are especially attractive on plain walls, and even children are happy to glue them in a nursery. This wall accent is inexpensive and bright.

Let's consider whether it is possible to glue with PVA glue. This composition dries very quickly, forming folds on the wet canvas. But it can be used in problem areas - near baseboards, radiators, under the windowsill, if combined with wallpaper (1:3).

The problem of how to peel old wallpaper off the wall is simply solved. Another advantage of vinyl canvases is their ease of dismantling: they peel off with a spatula, leaving a surface ready for a new pasting.

Wallpaper with a second layer

Let's consider whether it is possible to glue vinyl wallpaper onto vinyl. At the dacha I encountered a problem: a house made of clay blocks lined with bricks. The old polymer wallpaper was glued tightly; it only came off with a layer of plaster along with clay, forming terrible brown bumps.

It's good that the covering was smooth and not made of foamed vinyl. Therefore, in the question of how to glue vinyl wallpaper onto vinyl wallpaper, I decided simply. I took the advice of the master: unevenness is invisible under the structural layer or wallpaper with small ornaments, and bought these.

Then I did everything according to the instructions outlined above. But with one amendment: the joints of the old wallpaper should not coincide with the newly pasted ones. And everything worked out. And most importantly - it lasts!

Conclusion

So, the advantages of these canvases are obvious: beauty, durability, ease of gluing, and care is a pleasure. Thanks to step by step instructions described by me, you now know how to glue vinyl wallpaper on a paper or non-woven basis. If you have a comment or question, write it in the comments!
