How to cut raw rubber. How to cut a car tire in half. Garden flowerpot from an old wheel

Modern industry produces many different types of rubber used in the most unexpected industries. Quite simply and quickly you can find the required rubber gaskets or the required rubber blank at the nearest market. However, if you still need to make a rubber product with your own hands, then you will need a couple of simple tips on how to simply and accurately cut the rubber.

How to cut rubber with a knife:

Rubber can be quite diverse in its properties, ranging from a very elastic and fairly pliable material to elastic, durable rubber plates. Rubber can be used in a wide variety of ways, for example, to cut a suitable size plumbing gasket, a boot heel, or a non-slip stand under a glass surface. Many people cut out various kinds of animals, swings, or make interior items from car tires. Can be done flower beds from car tires, but for this you need to know how and with what to cut a car tire.

The secret is very simple, in order to carefully and simply cut a piece of rubber, you will need a sharp knife, of course 🙂, and ordinary water.

A piece of elastic rubber, a sharp knife and water.

To start, you need to mark the cut line (for me, simply setting the knife blade straight was enough).

We begin to cut the rubber with a knife.

Cutting thick rubber with a knife becomes quite difficult as the blade goes deeper into the thickness. The rubber begins to become viscous, and if you overdo it, the rubber may even melt. To prevent this from happening, and for the knife to pass through the rubber like clockwork, it must be moistened with water (not oil, in no case should it be moistened with oil).

We wet the rubber with water and cut it with a knife.

Rubber becomes slippery when wet, and the knife blade will not get stuck and melt the rubber, thereby you will get an even and high-quality cut without much effort.

How to make a round hole in rubber:

Sometimes there is a need to cut rubber circles, for example, for non-slip legs under a stool, heels, or for gaskets between two glasses. In order to cut evenly shaped rubber mugs, you need to select metal pipe suitable diameter, you will also need a piston suitable for the diameter of the tube.

A – metal tube, B – piston

You need to use a sharpener or a file to sharpen the edge of the iron tube.

Sharpened iron tube

After you have sharpened the tube, you need to insert it into the drill chuck, moisten the rubber with water and simply start drilling holes, first laying it on a piece of wood.

Drill out round rubber gaskets

With the help of such a simple device and water, you can drill out as many smooth, neat rubber rounds as you like (I use them to make non-slip feet for devices). The sharpened tube operates on the principle of a drill, but as the circles are drilled, it becomes filled with them, and in order to pull them out, a special piston is needed. You then simply push the rubber rounds out of the sharpened tube.

Squeeze the rubber bands out of the tube with a piston

The main thing is not to forget to wet the rubber with water when drilling or cutting. It should be noted that cutting out a circle using a sharpened tube is much easier and more convenient than the classic method - using a drill. However, if you need to drill rubber with a drill, this is also quite easy to do by sharpening it first and periodically dipping the drill in water.

You need to drill rubber at low speeds and periodically wet it cutting edge. However, if you need to drill a large block of rubber at high speeds, it is advisable for you to completely immerse it in water.

As a last resort, holes in thin rubber, as in plastic, can be melted by heating the shank of a drill or an iron tube with a lighter.

Holes melted into rubber

The main thing is to be careful when working with hot metal. Also remember that rubber can release toxic substances when overheated, so melt holes under the hood or in a well-ventilated area. Follow all safety rules even when drilling rubber.

It's always nice to make something beautiful and useful out of a junk item. A good example such creativity - beautiful flower beds from tires. They are not difficult to build, but their benefits are enormous. But that's just a fantasy country craftsmen not limited. From old wheels, which often just lie on the road and pollute environment, they make outdoor furniture, sculptures for the garden and even rebuilding small children's towns.

Such a simple and unsightly material at first glance, like old car tires, in fact, seems to be specially created so that every summer resident can feel like a real artist and decorate his plot with real designer flower beds and original author’s sculptures. Without exaggeration, you can cut anything out of tires. Such crafts are on par with those made from plastic bottles all year round will delight the eyes of the owners and guests of the dacha, and most importantly, will not require special financial investments.

It’s also nice that the benefit of the idea of making crafts with your own hands from tires is double: on the one hand, we recycle a wheel that polluted the environment, and on the other, we get an original one. garden decoration or a flower bed.

Crafts made from used rubber tires amaze with their variety and the richness of the imagination of their authors. Here are the most common ones:

In the photo - flower beds made from tires

A small flower bed. The easiest way to make flower beds from tires is to leave the tire as is, just decorate it brightly and fill it with soil. Nothing complicated. Even a weak woman or child can cope with this, and such a flower garden will look wonderful.

This photo shows cups made from old wheels.

Flower beds made from old tires in the form of various objects. Make them more difficult. The tire is cut into two unequal parts and the larger one is turned inside out. It is worth noting that the edges of tires can be made various shapes, it's all just a matter of imagination and sleight of hand. Using this technique, flower beds are made in the form of a mug, flower, or vase. A huge rubber cup made from tires looks very funny. And some craftsmen thus build an entire tea set on their site.

Turtle made from old wheels

Flower beds and sculptures in the form of animals and fairy-tale heroes. A funny frog made of tires, a kind gnome, a mysterious unicorn, beautiful swans, a three-headed dragon, a turtle, a luxurious carriage, a huge telephone - it’s easier to list what they don’t do from this available material. The only condition is to think through the composition from the very beginning, so that there are no unpleasant surprises later.

In the photo - multi-tiered flower beds for flowers or berries

Multi-tiered flower beds made from several tires. The simplest one to make is a three-tier one, but the number of parts can be greater. Several tires of the same or different sizes are placed on top of each other or in a checkerboard pattern. A tire well looks impressive, stylized to look like a real one and equipped with all its inherent attributes: a chain, a shaft with a visor, a bucket. This flower bed can also be used as a vertical bed for growing berries and vegetables.

Tire beds for strawberries

A strawberry bed made from tires will take up minimal space and give a rich harvest. It is also perfect for growing seedlings, herbs, and peppers. From such a flower bed you can make a fence for a raspberry or currant bush, or make several of them and use them to delimit the garden into cultural zones. It is also worth mentioning that a well made from tires is often made not only decorative, but is used to disguise a drainage pit or septic tank.

Experienced craftsmen and craftswomen know many secrets that help them create garden sculptures and flower beds made from tires with your own hands. They understand better than anyone how to make unique and inimitable handicrafts from old, useless trash. Here are just a few of these secrets:

  • Imported tires are best suited for the job, as the rubber on them is softer and easy to cut. But in their absence, domestic products will do. In principle, they are quite easy to process and allow you to make crafts from them different shapes.
  • Tires intended for use on winter roads are more pliable, easier to cut and easier to process than those used in summer.
  • The longer the tire has been used and the more it is worn, the thinner, softer it is and the easier it will be to work with: cutting and turning.
  • Before you start creating a craft, the material needs to be prepared: thoroughly cleaned of dirt, and degreased before painting.
  • To cut car tires, use a sharp knife with a thin spine. You can check how well it is sharpened by running the blade along notebook sheet, holding it suspended. If the knife does not cut or tears the paper, it is not sharp enough.
  • Cutting a car tire for garden crafts It’s more convenient if you periodically lubricate the knife with machine oil. This will make it easier to fit into the rubber. Used oil will also work.
  • When you need to cut out some shaped elements, markings are applied to the tire. It will help you achieve a more accurate and accurate result. It is most convenient to apply it with ordinary white chalk, or, in extreme cases, with a marker.
  • The durability of the craft depends on what paint you use to paint the rubber. For old people wheel tires Suitable for both automotive paints and any paints for outdoor use.
  • Before painting the tire, it is recommended to prime its surface. Primer with added small amount PVA will increase the strength of the coating and reduce paint consumption.
  • Paints in aerosol cans speed up the painting process to 20-30 minutes, and make the painted layer more uniform.
  • Decorative finishing can be made from scrap materials. For example, cover the surface with pebbles, bottle shards, or lay out pictures from colored plastic bottle caps.

It is better to paint a flower bed from a tire not only from the outside, but also from inside. This way they will look more aesthetically pleasing, and the black rubber will not be visible from the inside.

Of course, every master has his own secrets, and it is impossible to list them all. And when you take up this fascinating business - tire sculpture, you will certainly have them too.

Several master classes on making crafts from old tires

As mentioned above, crafts made from tires are varied. Their appearance and purpose are limited only by the imagination of the master. We invite you to familiarize yourself with the basic models. After reading them, you will learn how to make a flower bed from tires with your own hands and you will be able to create original, unique and useful garden accessories yourself.

A simple flower bed in the shape of a flower

A small flower bed made like a daisy from one tire is the simplest basic model. You can make several such flower beds, arrange them sparingly and decorate the approach to the house. Sometimes they are placed on asphalt or tiled areas.

We will need:

  1. One old tire.
  2. Sharp knife.
  3. Marker or chalk.

Mark the cut location with a marker. We will cut the tire along them, from thickening to thickening.

Before cutting tires, make sure that they do not have metal cords that could damage the knife. They are usually inserted into truck tires.

We cut the tire along the entire circumference with even zigzag petals of any shape of your choice (triangular, oval, semicircular).

We turn the tire over and work with it reverse side. Moving the knife along the thickening, we cut out a circle from the back of the tire.

Then, along the entire circumference inside the tire, approximately every 20-25 cm, we make transverse cuts from the cut edge to the bend (end of the tread).

After this, the tire needs to be turned out. The flowerbed is ready. All that remains is to paint it, giving it a more attractive look, fill it with soil and plant plants.

For greater clarity, watch the following video:

Garden flowerpot from an old wheel

You can make a beautiful garden vase from an old wheel in a short time.
Such flowerpots look better in pairs in front of the house, according to different sides doors or porch. Let's look at a step-by-step master class on how to make them.

We will need:

  1. Tire with disk.
  2. Sharp knife.
  3. Chalk or marker.

Using chalk or a marker, mark a zigzag line along the entire frontal circumference of the tire, along which we will begin cutting. Thanks to her, the flowerpot will look like large flower with many petals.

Cut the tire along the marked line with a sharp knife. To facilitate the process, the knife is periodically dipped in machine oil(spent material will also work).

After the wheel is cut, we check whether there are any uncut sections left and proceed to turning it out. It is better to do this together with an assistant, slowly, in parts.

After we managed to turn out the tire for the future flower bed, it turned out that there was a tube in the wheel. It needs to be cut out and thrown away.

The flowerpot is ready. Its bowl was made from the main part of the wheel. There is no need to remove the disk from the tire. It serves as a platform and stand for the vase, and the remains of the tire at its base provide additional support.

All we have to do is clean, degrease and decide how to beautifully paint our new garden vase. When you pour the earth into the bowl, do not forget to put a gasket on its bottom so that the earth does not spill out and make several holes in it to drain the water.

Video instructions for making a flowerpot:

Swan from an old tire

The most popular garden sculptures made from tires are swans. They are usually placed near artificial pond, which gives the site a stunning look. You can plant grass in the bird itself, then it will seem that it is peeking out from behind the vegetation. Detailed information will help you make it step-by-step instruction with photo.

We will need:

  1. Sharp knife.
  2. An electric drill for making holes for a knife to fit into the rubber.
  3. Sander or file.
  4. Jigsaw.
  5. Chalk or marker (preferably a marker).
  6. Wire 5-6 mm in diameter (rigid, to give the shape of a “swan” neck).
  7. Plastic clamps (to shape the head).
  8. Roulette.
  9. Gloves.

According to the diagram, we mark the contours of the future swan on the surface of the tire according to the following video, in which the author uses dimensions in inches, calling them in international system measurements - inch. Inch (1 inch) = 2.54 cm.

How beautiful and neat our sculpture will turn out depends on the accuracy of the markings.

Let's start cutting. In the initial section, use a drill to drill 3-4 holes at a distance of 3-5 cm and cut the tire between them with a knife. We insert a jigsaw into the resulting cut and begin to cut out the swan.

After all the contours are cut out, turn the tire inside out. We try to do this carefully, since careless movements in the thinnest places can tear it.

To make the bird’s figure look more neat, we smooth all the cuts along the contour with a sander.

To shape the swan's neck, we insert a wire into it. To do this, drill holes in the center of the neck and to the end of the body every 20 cm. We apply the wire and secure it in the holes with soft staples.

Forming the head. We make longitudinal cuts and holes, as shown in the photo, and using the same wire or plastic clamps we give the swan’s head the shape.

Our tire swan is ready. All that remains is to paint it and make a stand.

The swan can be painted in White color or not paint at all, leaving it black. We make the beak red. Swans look very beautiful in a pair: black and white.

Without a stand, soft rubber swans will not stand. You can simply take any tire and paint it, for example, blue. Thus, it will symbolize the pond. Or you can take the time to make it curly.

We make the figured stand in the same way. We mark the outline on the tire along which we will cut, cut the tire along it, turn it inside out and paint it.

Using a similar technique, you can make any shapes from tires: animals, birds, fairy-tale creatures.

But if you don't want to bother with complex markings and sharp, you can do it simpler. For example, assemble a cute frog from whole tires.

In the photo - a flowerbed in the shape of a frog

Making a frog from tires is very simple. The body and head are assembled from one or several larger tires, eyes are assembled from small wheels, for example from a baby stroller, and paws are assembled from rubber scraps.

Flowerbed chamomile

It’s hard to come up with a decoration that’s easier to make than this flowerbed. Despite the fact that it requires several car tires, it can be assembled in literally 15-20 minutes, it looks nice, neat and will never be out of place.

We will need:

  1. Three old tires of the same size.
  2. A sharp knife or grinder.

We cut all the tires in half, having previously marked the cut locations. Before cutting, find out if there are metal cords in the rubber. A knife won’t take them, so use a grinder.

To give the future flower bed an aesthetic appearance, you can paint the tires. It is better to do this in advance, immediately after cutting.

I think it will be clear from the photo: why cut the tire. Indeed, they do not rot and do not creep away from the sun and frost. Accidental impacts, unlike asbestos cement sheets, do not harm them. After all, rubber strips can be used in many ways. Even if you don’t edge the beds like I did. Even if not cut the tire onto the tape, the hoops obtained from it can be used as compost bin or vertical bed. Yes, you hear a lot about how it’s harmful and terrible and all that... I don’t know. But my ants build their summer incubator nests near the rubber, where they keep their pupae. If rubber were harmful, I don’t think they would have worked like that. And if they aren’t afraid, then it’s somehow no good for me either.
OK. Everyone decides this question for themselves. But for those who decide to cut a tire for their needs, here are some tips:

You need to start cutting the tire with a shoe knife. We make the same cut several times, pressing on the side so that the cut diverges and cut through. Now we insert a good knife into the cut, sharpening it towards you (I made a special cutter from the blade of an industrial hacksaw) and cut it with an upward-toward motion, simultaneously bending what is being cut to the side. Cut the tire how they cut bread - no need. Rip up the rubber. And the knife doesn’t have to be razor-sharp: the slight sawtooth shape of the burrs is only beneficial.

I recommend turning the tire out for the winter and letting it rest. Otherwise, cut, it will become a wave. It is necessary to remove the trough-like appearance, which will give the hoop a long shelf life. But you can do it differently. Make a bunch of cuts on the inside out tire...

You can cut hoops into ribbons with a regular small grinder. Just make sure that the wind is not blowing towards your neighbors, otherwise you won’t be able to avoid an untranslatable play on words (in one of the local dialects) because this thing is stinking. BUT! The rubber is nicely cut with a grinder, the metal cord is also striped with it and... In general, cutting a tire is a quick job if you see how once. And to make it completely clear, here is a video where cutting a tire occurs in real time.

Tire pitfalls

When processing and manufacturing products from old tire There are pitfalls that are hidden from view and only appear directly in the process. This article is dedicated to these stones.

Catch #1. Material - rubber.

The tire must be firmly secured, or at least the part that is currently being cultivated must be secured. In our case, an original tire cutting technique has been developed. Based on this, you need to cut the tread first while the tire has maximum rigidity. If there is, you need to cut the tread and rest against something, on help will come an ordinary glass jar, although after sawing 5-6 centimeters, the jar needs to be moved.

The threads of old and new tires are different, and at the same time the results i.e. properties of cutting elements are different. For clarity, if you make a swan from a bald tire, then the swan’s head falls forward, and if you make it from an almost new tire, then the head, on the contrary, falls back.

Catch #2. The presence of a metal cord and tread thickness.

The metal cord is located only over the entire area of the rubbing surface. The metal cord, together with the thickness of the tread itself, creates additional difficulties when cutting the tire.

Using a hacksaw for metal, cutting a tire is very, very difficult, and in some places it is completely impossible.

When treating the main rubbing surface, use:

  • electric jigsaw (the most good option- rubber does not burn and is processed well). Having tried several jigsaws, I was surprised that not every jigsaw can cut a tire.
  • grinder (in some cases convenient, but the rubber burns - a lot of smoke)

But the sides of the wheel can be easily cut with an ordinary knife. Rarely, but accurately, there are tires without a metal cord at all - probably 1 in 40.

Catch number 3. A ring on which the tire sits on a metal rim.

The ring is a hardened stranded metal rod bent into a ring. Cutting metal with a hacksaw is unrealistic, but it can take a long time. There is only one way out - use Balgarka. In my opinion, the seat ring is correctly called. Many people immediately want to get rid of the ring; in some cases, the rigidity of the ring is used in the design.

Catch #4. Tire painting.

You can paint the wheels with any paint. Nitroenamel dries quickly and allows you to immediately place and use the figures. But since you have to paint rubber, which is deformed during transportation, the paint also cracks and bursts - regardless of the type of paint. Because chemical reaction goes on constantly, so the colors fade, white becomes yellow tint, therefore it is better if it is possible to repaint the figures annually.

Catch #5. Injuries.

Since the cord is metal mesh, therefore, metal hairs are formed on the cut, which strive to cut through the skin. Metal shavings are not a pleasant thorn. Be especially careful with your eyes when sawing with a jigsaw.

Catch #6. Energy costs.

I would like to immediately warn, but not to scare or dissuade, that the tire weighs quite a bit and working with the cord and metal attachment ring implies the presence of male hands. On average, wheels have 13, 14, 15 radii - the most popular ones weigh on average in the range from 5 to 8 kilograms, and if we estimate that one cutting can take about 1 hour, then you will have to turn the wheel more than once.

From everything said above we draw a conclusion.

To process and cut an old tire you need:

  • a work table on which the old tire will be cut (see catch 1) or at least just a table;
  • a hacksaw, a jigsaw, a drill, an angle grinder (see trick 2.3) - literally everything can be needed;
  • hand protection (gloves), eye protection (mask, goggles) + all protective equipment necessary when working with power tools.
  • persistence and patience, and, not least important, physical strength (try turning the wheel several times)

Reader Tips:

  1. It’s easy and simple to cut even Belaz rubber. I bought a RAGE blade and put it on a simple hand-held circular saw. It is possible with the original one circular saw Buy RAGE, but it’s cheaper to just buy a disc, which is what I did.
  2. if you cut crosswise, then use a grinder and a metal disc.
I cut it more than once. the discs didn't burn out :-) just a bunch of black crap flying around :-(
    if it's fast.
If you don’t have a grinder, use an ordinary hacksaw for metal.
for metal it is needed because when cutting across the tire, you need to cut the metal cord.

If you cut AROUND (circumference) then... who knows, I didn’t cut it. perhaps a sharp knife and soap as recommended above or a jigsaw.
this again - if you don’t run into the cord.

  3. Good hour! Electric jigsaw with the roughest saw blade for wood and machine oil. The Belarus tractor tire takes about 10 minutes, it’s easier for two people to pull off the cut off part.

How to cut a car tire?

Whenever you need cut a car tire with your own hands, it’s better to know some tricks that will not only help make this process more enjoyable and less labor-intensive, but will also help protect against injury and make the cut better.

  • First you need to know the structure car tire(and any other technology).

Because the surface where the tire touches the ground is more difficult to cut, since there is a metal cord there.

To do this, you can use it like a hand saw, lubricating it with oil or soapy water, or a grinder with a metal disc.

I must warn you, if you have never used an angle grinder before, you better use hand hacksaw, since it is not difficult to catch the clamping of the disk when cutting the tire. For this procedure, you need to hold the tool firmly and be able to saw correctly.

  • With the side part of the tire the situation is much simpler; there is no need for special tools, but caution must be observed.

Since cutting is carried out using sharp knife, which is constantly moistened with soapy water, oil or at least water.

When cutting, it is best to pull back on the piece being cut to reduce resistance on the knife.

This procedure is indispensable in the manufacture of various homemade products from tires, from flower beds of various designs to original ones. garden figures and sculptures.

Vehicle characteristics: The dimensions of the car are as follows: length - 3826, width - 1100, height - 1323 mm. The wheelbase is 2382 mm. Ground clearance 211 mm. The car is equipped with a hybrid power unit. The 2-cylinder engine is equipped with a system that provides engine power output. There are 4 valves per cylinder.

For some purposes (I’ll show you when I do it), I need a piece of tread from an old tire.
What is the best way to cut a tire?
1. Bulgarian? (it cuts, but it stinks and there’s soot all around)

Solzhenitsyn in “The Gulag Archipelago” writes that prisoners made boat shoes from car tires called “chuni from ChTZ” by cutting the tires with 2 axes (one as a chisel, the second they beat). And they sewed them together with copper wire. 🙂

When operating an angle grinder, you do not have to do physical exercise. In this way you can remove rims worn out tires.
The diameter of the disc for an angle grinder is smaller and OK.

You shouldn't cut with a jigsaw - it will take longer.

I made myself a container for water and cut the container from the K-700 with a knife quite successfully. And cylinders from passenger cars are generally easy. If you only cut the cord, then use a knife to cut metal.

1. I cut the sidewall with an ordinary table knife with salidol or lithol. The mother-in-law was satisfied with the flowerbeds.

A sharp knife and lubricant with glycerin, or perfume, glides on like butter and is then easily washed off with water. The method is recommended in the Chemist's Handbook for cutting rubber stoppers, which are very hard.

I first tried a metal file with small tooth(I cut the tire lengthwise along the tread, and there is a metal cord, there are such tiny wires :), but there are a lot of them: confused :). A metal file with a fine tooth cuts the wires, the process goes slowly, the file quickly shrinks. And the file with a large tooth breaks the wires, things are much more fun. In order to strip the tire it took 2 files with large teeth and 10 minutes of time. Protruding wire rags can be easily sanded together with the rubber using a thick grinding disc.
