Wooden gates: design features. Wooden gates: beautiful, reliable and affordable (23 photos) Do-it-yourself antique wooden gates

“My home is my castle,” many owners of private houses believe; supporters of this opinion, as a rule, fence their territory with a continuous high fence. But such a fence does not look very aesthetically pleasing, despite the fact that there is a large assortment modern materials leaves the owner a lot of choice. A blank fence creates a feeling of enclosed space, the closedness of the owners of the site. For those for whom it is important not to isolate themselves from the world, great solution designation of personal territory will become wooden fence, made using wood carving technique.

Carved fence

You can make a wooden fence with your own hands using samples - it will give your home individuality and will not leave your neighbors and guests indifferent. The house behind the original openwork fence will look especially hospitable, shaping your image as the owner. Nowadays, forged fences are in great fashion - but a carved fence is in no way inferior to them in beauty. If you want the fencing of your site not only to create the illusion of protection from the outside world, but also to be beautiful decorative decoration- choose a carved fence.

The advantages of such a fence:

  • A carved fence will suit any type of house and any design of a personal plot;
  • A wooden fence is easy to keep clean;
  • If you wish, you can do all the work yourself; wood carving is an interesting creative process.
  • A carved fence is easy to install; you can also do this work yourself;
  • Carved fences are inexpensive and will suit anyone;
  • The environmental friendliness of the material used does not cause any harm to the environment;
  • You can experiment with varnishes and paints yourself different colors and texture to give your fence individuality.

Which wood to choose?

Most cheap material- wood-laminated board, or plywood. To work with it, two tools are enough - a hacksaw and a file with fine teeth.

If you want your fence to seem expensive and look stylish, choose valuable wood as the source material:

  • Trees such as poplar, maple and ash give beautiful designs when cut;
  • Beech and oak form small specks;
  • Walnut, ash and elm form curved lines similar to sinusoids.

Trees coniferous species Well suited for creating lace threads. Coniferous plywood is cheaper than solid wood, but the result will be almost indistinguishable.

If you settled on a contour carving or a geometric pattern, choose hardwood.

Styles

Interesting carving

If you have absolutely no experience in woodworking, but you are determined to make the fence yourself, stop at simple patterns. There are techniques that require expensive equipment, but you need carving options that do not require special knowledge and experience. The following techniques are suitable:

  1. Geometric carving. The ornament consists of simple geometric shapes. Such work will require quite a lot of time, but even a beginner can do it with a certain amount of perseverance. In this case, you can even do without a special tool - an ordinary sharpened knife will do.
  2. Contour carving. For this type of work you will need a chisel. The point of carving is not to cut through wooden base through, and cut out small indentations in it. As a result, you get a 3D drawing - to enhance this effect, we recommend painting the convex areas light paint. The contour technique can also be used in combination with a solid solid fence - then a pre-prepared threaded canvas is fixed to the fence canvas, which is decorative element registration
  3. Lace carving. Using this technique, you can make a unique artistic fence with a pattern reminiscent of lace. You can use a power tool or a jigsaw. First, one hole is drilled, a file is inserted into it - and then the entire pattern can be sawed entirely along the pre-drawn contour.

DIY carved wooden fence templates

Carving template

Installation diagram:

  • Before we start work, we prepare the boards - we sand the uneven surfaces and go over them with a plane. This is enough for light wood, but dark wood will most likely need to be tinted.
  • Let's draw a picture. If you are good at drawing, it will not be difficult for you to create a template for the future fence yourself. If not, no problem - on the Internet you can find a lot of image options for your future template.
  • When the pattern is completely cut out, the board is polished and sanded again.

Now the carved wooden fence can be installed:

  1. Mark the line along which your fence will be mounted. Place wooden stakes in the corners of the area and stretch a bright thread from one to the other. Place marks for the pillars - they should all be at the same distance from each other.
  2. At each mark, a hole 40-70 cm deep is dug.
  3. Before installing wooden supports, you need to treat them with an antiseptic. After the antiseptic has dried, the pillars are placed in holes and filled with concrete.

When the solution hardens completely and the pillars stand “tightly”, jumpers are installed. Without them, the structure will not be as strong. Will do wooden beam, which is attached using self-tapping screws and nails. This creates the frame of your fence.

After the frame is completely ready, start installing your threaded blanks. The final stage It is always necessary to treat the fence with a special coating. It will protect wooden parts from bad weather and all kinds of wood pests. First, go over your future fence with a primer and then feel free to cover the fence with paint or varnish.

Carved wooden fence

A fence made from a carved picket can be mounted according to all the same rules as a regular wooden fence.

Installation of the fence is carried out in the following sequence:

DIY carved wooden fences

Before transferring the design to the base, prepare a wooden canvas. Plane over the entire surface. Dark wood is usually tinted. If you want the surface to shine, use varnish.

Carving a picket fence with an electric jigsaw

The drawing you apply should be clearly visible. For light wood, you can use black carbon paper; for dark wood, bright colors are suitable. You don’t have to use carbon paper, but simply press hard on the stencil with a pen - marks will remain on the wood.

When carving wood, you must follow safety precautions:

  1. Remember that all your working tools are incredibly sharp. Even with a light touch cutting surface can cause serious damage skin. Therefore, you cannot check with your finger how well the tool is sharpened.
  2. If you work on a table, your desktop should be 100% stable and in no case sway while working. Check that the table legs are the same height.
  3. In order to secure the parts of your future fence during work, it is advisable to use special devices.
  4. You only need to cut “on your own”; the other hand cannot be held in the plane of work.
  5. Remember that wood shavings can ignite and burst into flames when heated - do not work near heating devices.
  6. Your work area should be well lit.
  7. Do not forget that sawdust from some types of trees (for example, yew) is toxic. This material is loved by many carvers. If you work with yew, carefully clean up your workplace and throw away all sawdust immediately after work.
  8. Remove from the work area all objects that could cause tripping.
  9. The first aid kit should be kept near the cutter while working.

Treatment

Varnishing

If you want your fence to serve you for a very long time, be sure to treat it with an antiseptic and then paint it. The paint is applied after the antiseptic has completely dried.

Wooden gate - pros and cons

Before you make a wooden gate with your own hands, you need to understand what advantages this material will provide and what its disadvantages are.

Advantages:

  1. Strength and durability - provided that the breed is chosen correctly.
  2. Attractive appearance - you can create a structure of any shape and choose a suitable decorative design.
  3. Affordable price. The bars required for assembly can be purchased very inexpensively, and if you use the remaining material after the main construction, then installing the gate will cost practically nothing at all.
  4. Quick and easy to assemble - such structures are easy to make with your own hands, even in the absence of professional construction skills.
  5. No need to use complex equipment and tools.
  6. Environmentally friendly materials.

Important! Design possibilities When installing a wooden gate with your own hands, the possibilities are endless. You can paint the product in any color you like or paint it with paints. And carved wooden gates are also very popular today - you will learn how to make these below, as well as interesting “antique” options.

Flaws:

  1. Low degree of protection against burglary.
  2. Limited service life - depending on the chosen model, you will have to periodically restore and correct the position of such a gate.
  3. Fire hazard.

Important! Such disadvantages necessitate additional treatment - antiseptics, fire-resistant compounds. Due to this, the time required to create a wooden gate increases.

Carved wooden gate - simple ways to create a pattern

The carved gate is very interesting option, and even a novice master can do it with his own hands.

There are 3 technologies, hallmark each of which is a type of pattern.

Geometric

The finished geometric gate is door leaf, which contains a large number of various graphic elements:

  • spirals
  • drops
  • lines
  • points
  • rectangles
  • diamonds.

To make such a decorative wooden gate, prepare yourself for painstaking but simple work:

  1. Come up with a pattern by first drawing up a drawing.
  2. Arm yourself with the appropriate tools and cut a design onto the surface of the wood.

Important! Each such gate is unique. If your own imagination is not enough or there is no desire to come up with a pattern, take any of the finished projects, which you liked.

Contour

Contour carving is another type of exclusively handmade work. The technology for creating such a gate is as follows:

  1. Draw a design on a wooden canvas or apply it using carbon paper.
  2. Along 2 lines of each design element, cut indentations with a chisel.

Important! For painting, choose at least 2 colors - one for the protrusions, the other for the recesses. This will make the drawing more voluminous.

Lace

This version of carving is considered the most beautiful, but at the same time the simplest. In the presence of suitable tool It’s easy to speed up the process by automating the cutting itself. For this:

  1. Apply any pattern of 1 or several solid parts to the surface. The drawing can be the simplest.
  2. Drill a hole in any part of the canvas.
  3. Insert a jigsaw into it and sequentially cut out the entire pattern along the contour.

Important! Make it easier for yourself not an easy task choosing a suitable design can only be done by looking at photos of wooden gates from various manufacturers and home craftsmen, or directly viewing the objects, if you have such an opportunity. In the second case, you will clearly imagine the entire structure of such a door structure, which means that creating your own will be much easier.

Installation of a wooden gate - basic design

The entire installation procedure will consist of 5 stages:

  1. Creation of supports.
  2. Frame assembly.
  3. Attaching decorative material to the frame.
  4. Installation of all fixing and locking parts - hinges, bolts, locks.
  5. Finishing of the door leaf.

Important! Before making a gate in a wooden fence, find out the direction that is convenient for you to open the door. IN in this case Most often, the determining criterion is the width of the roadway - if it is small, it is better to direct the gate inward, if it is sufficient so that the gate does not catch passing cars - the choice is yours.

Installation of supports

Before you start work, everything wooden materials- for supports, frame and cladding, treat with an antiseptic and wait until it dries. This procedure will help prevent wood from rotting and increase its resistance to moisture and bugs.

  1. Drill 2 holes with a depth of 1-1.2 meters.
  2. Place a sand cushion up to 7 cm thick at the bottom.
  3. Fill in another layer of crushed stone.
  4. Compact both layers.
  5. Fill in cement mortar.
  6. Install support pillars.
  7. Verify their clearly vertical position by level or plumb.

Important! Fix so that during the setting process cement mixture they didn't tilt.

Frame assembly

As a result of the work on making the frame, you should end up with a Z-shaped structure. For this:

  1. Lay the bars out on a hard, level surface.
  2. Make the markings.
  3. Cut to desired length.
  4. Connect the frame elements.

Important! If there are “burrs” on any part, sand them down with a plane.

Decorative lining of a wooden gate

Sheathing the frame is carried out in 2 ways:

  • continuous row;
  • grid at intervals.

In both cases, adhere to these rules:

  1. Make preliminary markings of the position of the boards on the frame.
  2. Adjust all sizes of cladding boards to the desired parameters.
  3. Secure all the elements sequentially with nails or wood screws, checking during the process that they are evenly positioned vertically and horizontally.

Important! If the structure is lattice, then all the boards should be located at the same distance from each other. Not a single element should tilt.

Installation of locking elements

To hang a gate:

  1. Preliminarily try on its position.
  2. Mark the locations of the loops.
  3. Secure the loops in the marked places. Since hinges are most often used decorative or forged, they are attached from the outside.
  4. Attach the door leaf.
  5. Adjust its position by level or plumb.

Important! Check that the sash opens easily and fits tightly when closed. After this, install the bolt and lock at a height of 0.9-1 meter from the ground.

Interesting gate design ideas - video

Now you are convinced that making a wooden gate with your own hands is not difficult. Most likely, you will have to spend more time choosing an interesting design, because the first impression of your home will depend on this. But the result of such work will certainly become a source of pride for you!

Carved wooden gates are a necessary element of the fence of any cottage, country house or dacha. This is the first thing that catches your eye when visiting someone else’s home, because the gate is the main entrance to the territory of a private property. In addition to its main function - protecting property, gates carry an artistic decorative meaning. General design of the entire site largely depends on what material, how the gate is built and decorated.

Carved gates, as a rule, are a swing-type entrance structure. Before installing them, it is necessary to check that there is sufficient area for them to open and close. Today, elite wooden gates are in great demand and popular; they can be seen in many cottage villages. This architectural element does not lose its relevance and originality, due to the fact that each product is made by a master in a single copy. The gate serves as a business card that can tell a lot about the owners of the house.

In the Russian tradition of wood carving, carved gates and palisades are an integral part of unique house carvings. The carvings of the masters of the Russian North were famous for their incised, relief, sculptural carvings with a combination of applied elements and details. In the old days, the gate was a complex with a closed loop, in which the gate and the gate were a single entrance. In other cases they were also made separate. Modern carvers have adopted the richest folk experience, enriching it with the latest working techniques and the use of advanced technologies. They are able to complete work of any complexity - from fairly simple designs to the most complex sculptural and ornamental compositions. The style of the product can be anything: modern, oriental, classic or fabulous.

In the manufacture of carved wooden gates, wood species are used that are distinguished by durability, wear resistance, and strength. As a rule, this is an array of pine, spruce, sometimes cedar and aspen are used. The wood is dried in a special way so that the finished product does not crack or lose its appearance. Special impregnations protect the material from sudden changes in temperature and humidity, improve the properties of wood and act as a kind of barrier against various damages.

Carved solid wood gates, made by an experienced craftsman, will become reliable, convenient and stylish protection for your home and site. A carved ornament or sculptural ensemble used to decorate a gate will undoubtedly attract the attention of relatives and guests and provide aesthetic pleasure. Indeed, such a product combines rich national traditions and novelties of the modern concept of wood carving.

Modern garden plot It’s hard to imagine without a fence - beautiful, durable, protecting from prying eyes. The most important part of the fence is the installation of gates entrance area. You can buy ready-made products, make them yourself, or order them from a workshop. individual drawing. A convenient option is wooden gates, which are in no way inferior to metal ones, and in some respects even surpass them.

Peculiarities

Wooden gates look traditional for Russia; they can be made to match other fences common in the area. Thus, you will be able to achieve the appearance of a fence similar to dozens of others. If you want to stand out and show your status, you can use tinting or wood carving. To achieve harmony, it is enough to make the fence in the same style as wooden house standing on the site.

Many masterpieces of wooden architecture have stood for centuries under snow, rain and various temperatures. If the technology is followed correctly, the gate will last a long time. It is worth considering that for windy areas solid canvases are not the best option. The style design can have many variations, for example, the lower part is solid, and the upper part is openwork or lattice. This way you will not only decorate the fence, but also reduce the wind load that constantly acts on it. As a result, after a strong storm you will not have to raise a tilted fence.

Advantages

Wood is a traditional building material used for thousands of years. It is easy to process and relatively inexpensive.

Wooden gates have the following advantages:

  • Low cost compared to metal models.
  • High strength characteristics.
  • Long service life (more than 10 years); if you treat the wood with a protective impregnation, it will last even longer.
  • Environmental Safety- wood does not emit harmful fumes into the atmosphere.
  • Possibility of use various types decor to add personality.
  • Self-production using inexpensive building materials is allowed.

Flaws

The design is not without some disadvantages:

  • Susceptibility to rotting - the material is destroyed under the influence of water.
  • Fire hazard - wood easily catches fire; in a fire, the gate can burn out completely.
  • Strength characteristics are lower than those of metal.
  • Heavy weight - fences sheathed with polycarbonate or corrugated sheets weigh less.
  • Low level of protection against vandals - traces of marker or spray paint will not be easy to remove from the surface.

Kinds

For the manufacture of gates, resistant to high humidity types of wood. Mainly used are pine, larch and oak. Nowadays, it is rare to find fences made entirely of wood. Mainly used metal carcass, and the boards are used for lining the doors.

But first of all, models are distinguished by type of design; today only 4 varieties are common.

Swing

A universal solution, the doors are mounted on hinged hinges; if the doors are heavy, bearing fittings are used. One door may be wider than the other. Among the advantages of swing models are the low price per square meter and simple installation. Recommended driveway width Vehicle- 3.5–4 m, height - at least 2 m.

The supporting pillars must be at least 20 cm higher than the sashes. If you plan to install a canopy, it is worth considering that it will prevent you from leaving trucks. To bring in building materials, you will have to place the canopy on supports about 4 meters high. Since fences often warp due to the wind, a moving pin will have to be secured between the two sashes. It will go into the ground or a special cylinder and fix the doors.

To simplify operation, it is convenient to install automation, with the help of which opening and closing is carried out. To control you only need a remote control with a few buttons.

Swing gates also have disadvantages:

  • free space is required to open them;
  • the ground will need to be leveled, otherwise the doors will cling to every bump;
  • strong supports are needed that will support the weight of the structure, otherwise the gate may fall from wind load;
  • in winter you will have to clear the snow to get to the dacha, otherwise the snowdrifts will not allow you to open the doors.

Recoil

When opened, the door moves to the side, that is, the gate operates on the principle of a sliding wardrobe. There are both mechanical sliding gates and automatic ones. This option is often chosen for a warehouse or construction site, since it is more convenient to use this model. The maximum span is 11 meters, which allows large trucks to pass easily. Even after a snowfall, you won’t have to worry about clearing the snow.

The disadvantage is that:

  • You cannot plant plants close to the fence. The sash will move to the side; there should be free space on the side near the fence;
  • To install the rails, you need a prepared concrete base, otherwise it will warp and the carriage will not be able to move freely;
  • only experienced master will take on the task of installing a sliding model; not everyone can do it on their own;
  • This mechanism with a carriage will cost much more than conventional hinges. The price can reach 30,000 rubles.

Lifting

Previously, such modifications could only be seen in ancient castles. But now they are being produced again, only the lifting of a heavy door is carried out not through physical force, but with the help electrical mechanism. Products with wooden elements are rare; metal ones are more common. Due to their large mass, these models are used only when connected to an electrical outlet.

If you're gardening without electricity, you may not want to lift and lower a heavy frame by hand. The price of such a structure is high; installation must be carried out by a specialist.

Gate with wicket

Any of the modifications described above can be equipped with a gate. In this case, an opening is cut out inside the canvas and a door is mounted inside. Another option is to install the gate as a separate leaf.

To improve this structure, you can make a viewing window in the door, install a visor and an intercom.

Installation

You need to start the installation with the foundation, since the gate will be subject to dynamic and static loads; the foundation must be very strong and heavy. The foundation can be a large wooden log that needs to be dug in and doors hung on top. But wood in damp conditions due to temperature changes will one way or another rot, even if it is impregnated with bitumen. It is best to make the base from concrete reinforced with metal mesh or rod.

The depth of the foundation on heaving soils should be no less than the freezing depth. This value can be found in tables; for example, in the North-West of the Russian Federation this parameter is approximately 1.7 meters. To build a reliable foundation, you need to dig a rectangular hole of sufficient depth. Ruberoid or film is placed at the bottom of the hole, large boulders are placed on top, then filled with concrete.

The pillars on which the gate will be supported are laid out from ordinary solid brick; reinforced concrete ones are also suitable. Metal supports to strengthen the gate leaves must also be filled with cement mortar to prevent the structure from swinging.

TO metal poles Loops or places for their fastening can already be welded at the factory. If solid brick is used, it is necessary to secure the hinges while laying. For wooden modifications, the hinges are screwed onto nuts; it is advisable to coat the wood with an antiseptic in advance. The gates must be installed at a distance of at least 50 mm from the ground, otherwise the gates will not be able to open if any snow or even fallen leaves enter.

The frame for the gate can be made of wood or picket fence, connecting its elements on metal corners or without them. In the second case, it is advisable to connect the opposite corners with struts. It is possible to join the tree into a tenon or a dovetail.

A welded structure is more reliable; a similar product can be made from metal profile using welding.

About how to do swing gates for a do-it-yourself dacha, watch the next video.

Decor

You can decorate any gate with your own hands, even old ones, and you don’t have to spend a lot of money.

Basic design methods:

  • Coloring- ordinary stain or Pinotex can turn ordinary pine wood into oak or ash. Also, the paint layer will protect the surface from atmospheric influences and pollution. For the aging effect, in addition to paint, you will need copper sulfate, which will give the wood a grayish tint.
  • Antique painting- usually the pattern is placed with inside. But if you need to decorate the entrance to any institution, the decoration can also be on the outside. Most likely, you will need the help of a professional artist; to create an unusual effect, you can use Khokhloma painting.

  • Finishing with forged elements- attracts attention, creates a feeling of respectability. If the upper part of the doors is made of metal lace, the gates will transmit light better and be less subject to wind load.

It is worth noting that forged elements are resistant to corrosion, but few people would dare to use them at the dacha. Such decorations will be expensive and will attract intruders if the homeowner does not live on the country estate year-round.

  • Thread- allows you to turn an ordinary product into a work of art. Only an experienced person can handle carving, but he will need a set of chisels - special tools. It is profitable to order carving in a workshop, where it will be done on a CNC machine, which will allow you to bring to life the most complex relief. Handmade It will cost more, and besides, now few craftsmen know this technique. But you can buy ready-made ones in the store. carved panels and attach them to the canvases with your own hands.
  • Wood paneling- if the gate has a metal frame and the top is planned to be covered with wood, there are many decorating options. You can fasten the boards horizontally, vertically, diagonally or fancy, alternating different directions for laying the material.

Yu. Podymakhin, Reutov, Moscow region

Sooner or later, every developer faces the question of either constructing a fence with a gate, or reconstructing an old one. In this case, you can use the services of hired workers or do everything yourself. The second way is closer to me.

Fascinated by Russian wooden architecture, I wanted to put up an antique gate and fence. But almost a year passed from the idea to the decision to start work, because there was no time, and there was not enough visual material: to see an old fence in good condition - very rare. Everything that came across was not always a successful stylization. I had experience working with wood (namely, I decided to make a fence and gate from wood), so I set to work on my own.

I intended to make a gate out of edged boards and a canopy over them. To do this, I attached three posts made of 100x100 mm timber to existing iron posts with 10x120 mm bolts (photo 1).

Photo 1

I treated the wooden pillars, like all other parts of the gate, with fire protection in two layers, and the bottom of the pillars with bitumen mastic. I did not dig in the wooden posts, but simply placed them on the ground (photo 2).

Photo 2

A frame made of bars with a cross section of 50x50 mm was attached to the top of the pillars for constructing a gable canopy (photo 3).

Photo 3

Two clarifications need to be made at this point.

Firstly, bars with a cross section of 50x50 mm are usually sold in lengths of 3 m. This means that the width of the gate cannot be greater than this value. The matter is further aggravated by the fact that, for example, in the pack of 8 pieces that I bought, there was not a single bar longer than 2.99 m. Therefore, the triangular frame on the middle pillar had to be placed not along its axis, but offset towards the long one span so that it is possible to block it.

If it were necessary to make a wider gate, I would have to take a beam with a cross-section of 50x100 mm and a length of 6 m and saw it lengthwise, obtaining the necessary bars of arbitrary length.

Secondly, when designing a frame for a gate canopy as roofing material I chose metal tiles, which I cut with a grinder into strips 70 cm long (this is the optimal cutting of a standard sheet with a minimum of waste). And this is not entirely desirable, since when cutting, the coating is destroyed and the cut edge must be tinted, as it begins to rust intensively. In addition, no matter how hard I tried, I could not get a smooth edge when cutting.

To avoid these difficulties, you can order already cut sheets from metal tile sellers. But they cut in sizes that are multiples of 50 or 85 cm, which is determined by the technology of the cutting process. And when designing the roof frame, this must be taken into account.

Lumber, no matter what time you buy it, is always raw. Therefore, a fence or gate without gaps can be made only if you use tongue-and-groove boards (which is expensive), or by stuffing slats or boards into the gaps after drying (and this increases the weight and cost of the gate). I used edged two-meter boards with a section of 25x150 mm for the gate. When purchased in winter, the boards had a width of 150 to 155 mm, and after drying they became up to 145 and even 140 mm wide. This means that on a gate with a span width of 3 m it is possible to “lose” up to 29 mm during shrinkage.

Considering the large weight of both raw and dried wood, for the gate wings it is necessary to make a strong frame with struts, which I made from wood (photo 4).

Photo 4

To create conditions for natural drying of boards and obtain flat plane Without sawing, I attached the gates and crossbars with two bolts on both sides to the hinges, and then stuffed boards onto them. About 2-3 weeks after drying under natural conditions, the boards were removed, struts were installed and the boards were reattached, pulling them together as tightly as possible. After that, I finally screwed the crossbars to the hinges, after which I sawed them in the middle.

It is advisable to rehang the boards in wet weather, when the boards have maximum size. If this is done in dry, hot weather without taking into account possible expansion, then in the fall when it rains, the gate will “unlock.” And at best, they will simply bend.

The advantage of this approach is that the gate leaves are obtained with virtually no gaps. And the gates, in addition, after sawing the crossbars, practically do not require complex locks to align the gates during operation.

This method also has disadvantages. So, while the boards are drying, you cannot use the gate, and if you have a car, you will have to leave it on the street. Plus, there is actually double work when installing the shutter boards.

The final stage of work is painting the gate.

First, I “aged” the boards, for which I treated each of them with a wire brush on a drill (photo 5). It is better to process raw boards - it turns out easier and faster. After that, the entire structure was covered with Pinotex.

Photo 5

Please note that before the final installation of the boards, I painted all their end surfaces (photo 6), as well as the crossbars themselves on all sides.

Photo 6

If this is not done, the tree in these places may rot (photo 7).

Photo 7

As a lock, I installed a bolt on the top crossbar. On the lower crossbars, I secured the iron corners with screws with the shelf facing outwards and placed a piece of 5x5 cm bar into the resulting niches. The result was a traditional, modernized lock. It not only locks the gate, but also keeps the doors in one plane. If the weight of the gate is large, then wheels can be attached to the bottom. I installed a padlock on the gate (photo 8).

Doors... Perhaps one of the most mysterious inventions of mankind. You never know what is hidden behind them: the door can open the way to unknown beauty or, when closed, destroy dreams forever.

What is stored for antique doors? Precious treasure or scary mummy? Interesting? In this article we will tell you about the oldest and unusual doors and gates, as well as interesting facts associated with them.

This door is considered the oldest working door in the world. It has been covering the entrance to the archives of Westminster Abbey (England) since approximately 1040. There was a legend that the tree was lined with human skin, but chemical analysis disproved this eerie theory - the covering turned out to be cow skin.

At the end of the 20th century, doors made at least five thousand years ago were found in Zurich (considered the oldest in the world). The poplar from which they are made is well preserved, and the carving turned out to be so delicate and unusual that for more than 10 years copies of these artifacts have been among the most sought after for interior design in Europe.

The most beautiful are the doors of the baptismal church of St. John (Florence, Italy). They were made in the 15th century and decorated with bronze bas-reliefs and miniatures from biblical and Old Testament scenes of amazingly fine workmanship.

In the 18th-19th centuries, mahogany came into fashion, and Italian craftsmen, successfully combining them with bronze, began to create masterpieces of carpentry that still amaze with their beauty.

By the way, the doors acquired a modern appearance (design using elongated frames with inserted stained glass or stained glass) only in the 18th century thanks to French craftsmen - the Parisian aristocrats really wanted to show off their wealth: it was for this purpose that large panoramic windows were invented glass inserts on the entrance doors.

Very unusual examples can be seen in Spain, where the “Moorish invasion” had a great influence on the development of culture and crafts. In modern Andalusia, houses are still preserved, in the external decoration of which Arab sensuality and European solidity are intricately intertwined. And since the doors are the “face” of the building, they also bear the echo of these intricacies.

Fancy ornaments reminiscent of thin lace, bright or contrasting colors and a semicircular arch, most often, are characteristics of Oriental or Arabic doors. The owner of the house decorated the entrance with all accessible ways: forged with flowers or bronze tips, painting or firing - it was the door that was originally supposed to tell the guest about the wealth and status of the owner.

It would be strange to ignore the Land of the Rising Sun - its original culture was also manifested in home interior. The doors for rich houses were minimalist and solid and made of wood, which is very expensive in Japan, and the entrance to poorer houses was closed with plywood panels painted with plant motifs.

The master's imagination is limitless and is embodied in the most various materials: wood, stone, metal, glass. Sometimes the thought arises: “If there is such a door in this house, then what is inside?”, isn’t it?

There is another creation of human hands that blocks access to an uninvited guest - a gate. Both wooden, iron, and forged, they are designed to protect our home, but skilled craftsmen, in addition to their main function, give these products such fancy shapes that their beauty and unusualness sometimes takes your breath away.

It is believed that the first forged gates with a mechanism were made in Spain. Their author (Antonio Gaudi) was no stranger to mechanics, and he equipped the huge iron dragon, sitting on the frame bars, with a toothy mouth that opened along with the gate doors. Currently, the mechanism is completely out of order, but anyone can admire the magnificent creation in Barcelona, Spain.

In the period from the XV to the XVIII centuries. In Europe, the Baroque style (Italian - “excessively bizarre, strange”) was very popular. All buildings built in those days were densely decorated with statues, stucco, frescoes, coats of arms, etc. This cup and the gate have not passed away: on the bright examples of ancient splendor there is no free space- voluntas, coats of arms, acanthuses, crowns almost completely cover the metal frame of the gate.

However, in the 19th century, the graceful lines of the revived “Art Nouveau” and the newborn “Art Nouveau” began to displace the intricate forged lace of the “Baroque”, and the simplicity of the curves and the low cost of the products for a long time put an end to the spread of the ruinous aristocratic style.

The most unusual gate, made of a coral block, was built by the owner of the “Coral Estate” at the beginning of the 20th century in the American state of Florida. An unhappily in love American of Latvian origin built an entire castle for his beloved, but she never reciprocated his feelings.

Human genius was able to come up with a sensor, automation and electric drive, but not a single modern technology carries the main thing: a particle of the soul and warmth of the hands of a Master who embodies his plan in seemingly ordinary things. And then these objects become real masterpieces, which we told you about in our article.

Wooden gates and wickets are the hallmark of the owners country house. From the way a wooden gate looks, one can judge the owner’s tastes, his well-being and complaisance. The neater the gate with a wicket looks, the best experience the owner produces on his neighbors and acquaintances.

Today we will tell you how to build wooden gates and wooden gates with your own hands. You can find photos of similar objects on the Internet, and some are also present in the article. Thanks to these photos, you can decide what kind of wooden gate you would like to make for your suburban area.

Wickets and gates with your own hands, of course, can be made not only from wood, but also from other materials. Here the choice is yours, which suits you more. But if you do not have experience, and you are planning to make a gate with a wicket with your own hands for the first time, then it is better to choose wood, because this the material has a number of advantages:

  • the tree is unpretentious in terms of processing;
  • availability of material;
  • ease of use;
  • finished wood products always look elegant and beautiful.

Below are several photos of samples of what wooden gates and gates can look like, and how you can decorate them with your own hands.

We select tools and tools for the job

Almost anyone can make a wooden gate or gate with their own hands, even without such experience. However, before you get to work, you need prepare the following set of tools:

In addition to the tools, we will need the following to install wooden gates and wickets with our own hands: Construction Materials:

  • wooden beams with different sections for pillars and frames;
  • slats or picket fences for covering the frame;
  • metal bolt;
  • awnings;
  • loops.

Preparatory work before assembly

Before purchasing lumber, be sure to decide what height your gate will have and what the size of the gate will be. Remember that for reliability, support pillars need deepen into the ground about a meter.

If you want to build a gate “for centuries” with your own hands, it is better to make the supports not from wood, but from concrete, brick or metal. And to maximize service life wooden poles, before installation they are impregnated with an antiseptic, and underground part resin or bitumen mastic.

The area for installing gates and wickets must also be prepared in advance:

  • remove large stones;
  • loosen hard clods and level the soil;
  • if necessary, mark the placement of supports using a cord stretched between the pegs.

It will be very difficult to install poles with your own hands, so It is advisable to invite an assistant so that the pillars can be held and concreted at the same time.

The shutters are hung on the gates only after the concrete has completely dried, and the supports at the top are best fastened horizontally with a common beam, which will prevent the pillars from warping under the weight of the shutters.

How to properly install wooden posts

The pillars are installed in this way:

  • Using a drill, we dig a hole a meter deep;
  • the distance between the planes of the pillars placed “facing” each other should be slightly greater than the width of the gate, this is within the range of about 120 cm;
  • pour 5 cm of sand into the bottom of the hole and spill a lot of water for shrinkage;
  • add 5 cm of crushed stone;
  • we burn the underground part of the pillars gas burner or blowtorch, or you can treat the entire pillar with an antiseptic to protect it from rotting;
  • Place a pole along a plumb line, fill the hole with crushed stone and compact it;
  • the base must be filled with liquid cement mortar and sand. The stronger the solution, the faster you can start installing the gate.

Assembling gate leaves

Swing gates include two doors and a gate, which needs to be placed on the side of the doors or be one of its parts. Depending on your project and dimensions, you need to make a frame.

To assemble the frame of the doors, you need to cut pieces of timber of the required length with a jigsaw. The wooden quadrangular frame is fastened with wooden nails by drilling holes in the ends of the beams, into which the treated dowels are inserted.

When the frame frame is ready, use galvanized self-tapping screws to attach the jumpers that are located horizontal or diagonal.

How to make a wooden frame for a gate

To assemble a gate with your own hands, you must first assemble its base. First, install the frame, then cover it with slats, which will create rigid triangular platforms that are needed to counteract the wicket's sagging and deformation.

The bars are laid out over the entire flat surface, then markings are being made. Cut to the correct length that matches the length of the gate and check the frame for placement. All parts wooden frame connect, they will be fixed using slats. If there are burrs or uneven surfaces on a wooden panel, they can be corrected with a plane.

Features of the wicket covering

The gate can be made solid or lattice. If you want a solid one, then wooden boards with slats are placed on the frame, then cutting lines are drawn. If the gate has a semicircular shape at the top, you can use a compass to make marks.

And to make a lattice wooden gate, each strip is cut individually using a ruler or tape measure. Cuts must be made as smooth and clear as possible. And in order to assemble all the structural elements at the end, it is advisable to take special wood screws.

Features of installation of fasteners and valves

The last stage of our work is the installation of fasteners and valves. So, the canopies need to be attached directly to the frame.

Check that the gate can close securely. If it opens on its own, it means something was done incorrectly. Fix the problem and you can install door latches and hinges.

To fasten gates and wickets, it is best to use factory fittings made of stainless steel or anodized.

To attach the gate to brick pillar, you need to leave two loops outside at the manufacturing stage. And the overhead part of the hinge must be attached to the horizontal crossbars on gates or gates using bolts.

To attach a wicket or gate to a post made of metal, asbestos cement or concrete, you need to use a suspension unit from a hook, clamp and nuts. To hang wooden gates with your own hands, you need two such knots.

Gate valves for wooden gates

As a latch for wooden gates, you can use a simple beam, which at one end needs to be inserted into an eye on one post, and at the junction of the leaves you need install two brackets. At the end, the beam must be inserted into the eye of the second pillar. The gate can be completely closed from the inside using a padlock.

If you want to provide a more rigid connection between the gate leaves or one part with a wicket, then you can take sections of galvanized pipes, but they must be different diameters so that one can fit into the other:

  • the length of both segments should be equal to 20 cm;
  • the diameter should be approximately three quarters to one;
  • a cut welded into the holder will serve as the handle of the valve;
  • and the clips themselves need to be fixed on the horizontal crossbars using clamps based on steel rods.

If you want to put a lock on the gate, next to the latch handle need to put a loop, you can take the same rod as for the clamp. It is important that the locking shackle can also cover the latch handle.

The valve can also be equipped with a unit that will fix one leaf closed. If the gate is equipped with a frame, the unit is attached to it; if not, then the pipe is driven into the ground and a clamp is attached to it.

To make gates and gates look more attractive, they can be painted. First, they need to be treated with an antiseptic solution, and then coated with external varnish. It is best to use yacht varnish that has a polyurethane base; it is more durable compared to cheaper analogues. The surface should be covered at least two coats of varnish.

As already mentioned at the beginning of the material, the advantage of wood as a building material is its affordable cost, the speed of manufacturing products based on it, and the minimum number of tools used for processing wood.

Of course, all this makes wood the most common building material, which is used when conducting out-of-town construction work. From the photo we can also see the aesthetic side, because wooden gates look very beautiful and attractive.

But along with the obvious advantages, wood has its drawbacks as a building material:

  • short service life of wooden products. Thus, gates and wickets made of wood can last no more than 5 years, it all depends on temperature changes and weather conditions;
  • high level fire danger;
  • wooden gates are not too serious an obstacle for thieves who want to get into your property.

Of course, in the photo, wooden products are very attractive, but wooden gates will not be durable and are not always practical. Everything is at your discretion, and if you are not afraid and want to equip your yard with wooden gates with a gate, you can safely get to work.
