How to cover a door with dermantine. How to sheathe a door - choose the material and do the work yourself. We upholster the entrance product with our own hands: step by step

A door with old upholstery looks untidy. In addition, it is recommended to change the upholstery and insulation for better sound and heat insulation of the room. If your immediate plans do not include purchasing new door, then it’s entirely possible to update the upholstery and insulate it yourself.

By covering a metal or wooden door with artificial leather you will get the following: advantages:

1. Improved thermal insulation

2. Improved sound insulation
3. Moisture resistance
4. Simplicity and ease of care
5. Wide range of colors and textures
6. The ability to hide some defects in the door leaf.

Required materials and tools

You can easily handle the door trim yourself; for this you will need the following materials and tools.

Necessary materials

– Upholstery. The quality used is natural or artificial leather. Genuine leather is a rather expensive material, so it is quite possible to use leatherette for door upholstery. Moreover, modern technologies The production of artificial leather produces a product that, in appearance and tactility, is almost indistinguishable from natural leather.

– Leatherette. Nowadays there is a fairly wide range of leatherette available on the market. Available in a wide range of colors, textures and thicknesses.

Before purchasing upholstery material, you need to measure the door. You need to add 20...30 cm to the length and width of the door - this will be right size leatherette. If you plan to upholster both sides of the door, then you will need 2 of these flaps. In addition to the main flaps for the door upholstery, you will need rollers that are attached around the perimeter of the door. The width of the flaps for rollers should be 12...15 cm, the length is equal to two perimeters of the door, plus 50 cm. Since leatherette usually has a width of 1.1...1.4 m, depending on the width of your door, flaps for rollers can be cut from the remains of the base material.

– Sheet insulation. As insulation, you can use foam rubber, synthetic winterizer or thick felt with a thickness of 10...25 mm. Its area should be the same as the area of the door if the insulation will be used in one layer.

– Round insulation. It can be foam rubber or polyethylene foam, with a diameter of 10...20 mm. Its length should be equal to two door perimeters plus 1 meter.

- Wallpaper nails. The heads of such nails should be decorative and have metal surface or covered with leatherette, in harmony with the main material and color door handle or castle. Using decorative nails and wire or fishing line, you can give the doors a three-dimensional design. The number of nails depends on the chosen pattern. If a pattern is not provided, then the number of nails is calculated taking into account the fact that the distance between them will be 6...8 cm.

Glue. If you are upholstering a metal door, you need to purchase highly resistant polymer glue (“Moment”, “88”).

There are ready-made kits for door upholstery on sale; by purchasing this, you will make the door upholstery process even easier.

Required Tools

– Medium sized hammer

– Screwdriver or screwdriver with a set of attachments

– Stapler with staples 8…10 mm

– Construction knife

– Cutting scissors

– Nail puller

– Pliers

Preparatory work for door trim

– Remove removable elements (lock, handles, eyes).

– Remove the old upholstery. This must be done carefully so as not to damage the door leaf. After removal old upholstery, you need to carefully remove old nails and first clean the door leaf.
– Remove the doors from their hinges and place them on a prepared place (desktop, workbench or 6 stools). Sometimes door upholstery work is carried out without removing the door from its hinges.

Upholstery on the inside of a wooden door

We will consider the option when the front door opens inward, which means that in this case, insulating rollers are nailed on the inside of the door.

– The main fabric and insulation are being cut. The dimensions of the leatherette fabric should be 20...30 cm more sizes doors. The insulation sheet should be 1 cm smaller than the door itself.

– Insulating rollers are made from strips of upholstery material and strips of insulation, or better yet, from foam rubber strips or polyethylene foam. Insulating rollers will give the door additional sound and heat insulation and ensure a tight seal between the door frame and the door. They are nailed so that they protrude beyond the door by 1...2 cm.

– Using a stapler, strips of leatherette (10...14 cm wide, equal to the length of the door) are fastened with the front surface down. A 4 cm strip is left on the door, the rest remains outside the door leaf.

– Strips of insulation (foam rubber or polyethylene foam) are wrapped in fixed strips, forming rollers that are stapled to the door leaf so that they protrude 1...2 cm beyond the edges.

– The rollers are fastened starting from the upper right corner, then fastened on the vertical side of the door and ends with fixation at the bottom of the door. The bottom roller should not touch the floor, as this will cause rapid wear.

– When securing the rollers, you need to take into account the location of the lock and door hinges. The roller located on the hinge side must completely cover the doorway. And there must be a gap at the place where the lock is attached.

– The insulation is also secured to the door leaf with staples, moving 5...7 cm from the edge. Holes for the handle, lock and peephole are cut out in the insulation.

– Upholstery material is fixed on top of the insulation. It needs to be wrapped around the edges of the insulation and secured with staples in the upper corners. If you want to give the upholstery a pattern, you need to mark it. If there is no pattern, then decorative nails are hammered in increments of 6...8 cm. When nailing leatherette, it must be constantly tensioned so that at the end of the work it is perfectly even.

Upholstery on the outside of a wooden door

If the apartment door opens inward, then the upholstery outside doors is performed in this sequence.

1. Close the door and mark a rectangle on the door leaf door frame– this will be the border of the upholstery.

2. Secure the insulation, retreating inward from the drawn line by 10 mm.

3. Fasten the upholstery material on top of the insulation, bending the edges inward, as when upholstering the inside of a door. The bottom edge is not yet secured.

4. On the outside of the door, install insulation beads on the posts and crossbar door jamb, not on door leaf. The roller at the bottom is not nailed to the threshold, because it will wear out very quickly. The leatherette strip is attached with the front side to the door jamb with a stapler, a strip of insulation is laid into it, a roller is formed and fixed with decorative nails. The roller should cover the door by 1.5...2 cm after closing it.

5. The lower insulation bead is attached to the door leaf, not the threshold. It shouldn't be too bulky. After its formation, you also need to upholster it with leatherette.

6. The peephole, handles and lock are installed. Holes (cuts) for accessories should be made smaller than the size of the handle (lock or peephole).

On video You can see the upholstery process wooden door

The upholstery of a metal door is similar to the upholstery of a wooden door. The leatherette and insulation are fixed with glue. The approximate glue consumption is 100 ml on each side. The surface on which the glue is applied must be degreased.

In the video you can see how to upholster metal door and how to decorate upholstery with a pattern using nails

How do we nail the bolsters?

The roller is nailed to the door frame and serves as a stop for the door leaf.
With proper upholstery, the tightness of the door is taken into account. When closing, the roller should not create significant resistance, but there should be no free space left. Upholstery with rollers is a complex and time-consuming job that requires great experience. Installation of rollers is carried out only on wooden doors, since fastening is done with special nails that cannot be driven into the metal.
The design of metal doors initially assumes the presence of stops, seals and rebates that act as rollers. Installing a roller on a metal door is possible only if it was originally installed on the door. In the production process of metal door wooden blocks hammered into the frame for attaching wallpaper nails. With this design, upholstery with rollers is possible without additional modification.

When is it impossible to upholster the front door?

After removing the upholstery, you have to deal with unpleasant surprises. Unfortunately, door manufacturers, in the struggle to reduce the final cost of the product, resort to all sorts of tricks to save on the materials used in door production. Therefore, you should not be surprised if under the door trim you suddenly discover that the door is made not of a whole sheet of steel, but of strips of metal, between which a gap of a centimeter was left or instead of metal they used hardboard, that is, pressed paper.
Of course, such surprises will not please not only the owner of the door, but also the master who came to order, since they significantly complicate the work he is doing. Also, the inner sheet can be made of plywood. When using plywood instead of metal, the thickness of the plywood is critical. When using a thin sheet of plywood, there is simply nowhere to hammer the nails. In this case, the master has to resort to covering the door with leatherette.
Doors equipped with crossbar mechanisms may have non-removable handles for driving the crossbars. In such a situation, upholstery without dismantling and replacing the handles is impossible. Replacing handles increases the cost of work. And in some cases, it becomes impossible to carry out work at all.

An entrance door that is not upholstered or has an old, cracked surface looks extremely sloppy, giving visitors a negative impression of the homeowners in advance. Moreover, it does not retain heat inside the apartment, and all the noise from the entrance freely penetrates into the premises. Therefore, over time, any good owner has a desire to tidy up both aesthetically and practically.

Upholstering a door with leather with your own hands, while also solving the issues of insulation and sound insulation, is quite possible, since this event is not a job of a high degree of complexity, and is accessible to almost everyone. The main thing is to have everything necessary materials, certain tools and a good understanding of the sequence of work.

Preparing for door trim

1. To update the door trim, you will need to prepare the following materials:

  • Natural leather, of course, is a very expensive material and is used for these purposes in exceptional cases. It doesn’t matter, there is artificial leather (imitation leather or leatherette). This material is available in a wide range in construction stores, and varies in color, thickness and textured pattern, so it can be chosen to suit every taste. High-quality artificial leather, both visually and tactilely, differs little from natural leather.

The width of this material varies from 1100 to 1400 mm, and this is quite enough for the size of any door leaf. Before purchasing leatherette, you need to measure the height of the door and add 25-30 cm to the resulting result. This length of upholstery material must be purchased for one side.

Also, we must not forget that upholstery material will be needed to make rollers that will be fixed around the perimeter of the door leaf. For them you will need three strips, 12-15 cm wide and a length that is equal to the height of the door.

  • For sound insulation and insulation, sheet foam rubber, thick padding polyester or felt are suitable. The required material thickness is from 10 to 25 mm.

Felt can be used as insulation...

This value will depend on the type of material and on the desired volume of the design, if it is intended to be made using decorative nails, thin wire or fishing line.

...or foam sheets
  • Wallpaper nails with a decorative head. They can be made of copper, silver or gold alloys, or covered with material of the same color as the selected upholstery material.

Wallpaper nails - you can choose the ones that suit your design best

The diameter of the japans or their design will depend on design solution on the design of the door leaf.

To general view dvery looked harmonious, it is best to choose nails to match the color of the door handle and lock.

  • If a metal door is being tidied up, then for this purpose one of the highly resistant polymer adhesives is purchased, for example, “88” or the universal “Moment”.
  • In addition to sheet insulation material, you will need strips of round insulation (foam rubber or polyethylene foam), sold by the meter. For our purposes, a diameter of 10, 15 or 20 mm is suitable.

2. The following tools should be prepared:

  • Staples and stapler for temporary fixation of insulation and upholstery material. Most convenient size staples for door trim 8÷10 mm.
  • Medium-sized hammer for hammering decorative nails.
  • Spicy construction knife- it is useful for cutting insulation and upholstery material.
  • A screwdriver with a set of attachments (bits) and a massive screwdriver - they are useful for dismantling old casing, removing and then installing locks and a viewing eye.
  • A nail puller and pliers are needed to pull out nails, If they will go wrong when driven in and, necessarily, to dismantle the old coating, in the case where it was installed.
  • Scissors for cutting materials.

3. Preparatory work also includes removing the old door trim:

  • First, all removable elements - peephole, locks and door handles.
  • Next, using tools, the old casing is removed as carefully as possible. It can be picked up with a powerful screwdriver and then with pliers. Usually, if the materials are not glued, leatherette and insulation are separated from the door leaf quite easily. When removing upholstery from an old wooden door, do not use excessive force to avoid damaging the door panel. Be sure to carefully inspect the entire surface to remove any remaining unnecessary nails, staples, screws, or fragments of the old coating
  • After cleaning the surface, the door can be removed from its hinges and placed on a prepared work table (workbench) or four to six stools installed. Further work on the upholstery can be done in this position. If you decide to remove the panel from the hinges, then before this process you must mark its outline on the door frame.
  • Sometimes the door is not removed, and its trim is suspended in its normal place.

How to upholster a door with leather yourself - various options

To analyze the entire cladding technology from all sides in detail, you need to consider three different options work is upholstery outside wooden door, then an internal one, and then dwell on the features of a similar process on a metal door.

Wooden door - interior trim

According to long-established practice, wooden entrance doors in multi-storey buildings opened into the apartment. It is this option that will be considered.

The inner lining of the door opening into the apartment is somewhat different from the outer upholstery, and the main difference in this process is the use of additional insulation elements - rollers. They are made from strips of upholstery material and cut insulation. It is convenient to use ready-made polyethylene foam rollers, which are sold by the meter, as insulating pads. This item general design serves to reliably close the gaps between the door leaf and the door frame. Therefore, they are nailed in such a way that they protrude beyond the door by 10 ÷ 20 mm. It must be remembered that on the side where the hinges are located, the roller is attached in such a way that it completely covers the gap along the entire height of the door jamb.

  • The first stage of work is cutting out the upholstery material and insulation. For the first, the exact geometric parameters of the door are taken, to which 120-150 mm are added - this will become the size that will be needed for the decorative lining of the panel.

As a rule, there are always strips of scraps left - they are perfect for forming sealing beads for upholstering the contour.

The insulation sheet should have a size 10 mm smaller on each side than the door itself.

  • Along the perimeter of the door, strips of leatherette are fastened with staples with the front surface facing down using a stapler. Typically, strips up to 140 mm wide are used, with a length exactly the size of the door frame. At the same time, about 40 mm of this strip is placed on the surface of the door - the rest should be on the outside.

Insulation tapes of polyethylene foam are wrapped in these strips. In this way, rollers are formed, which are also secured to the door leaf with a stapler.

Installation of the rollers begins from the upper right corner of the door, then they are secured to the vertical edges of the door, and only then to the bottom. In this case, the location of the door relative to the floor is taken into account - the roller should not rub against flooring, since this will wear out and break very quickly.

If it is intended to install an invoice, then this is taken into account when attaching the rollers - a corresponding gap is made.

  • Next, it is placed on the door leaf insulation material. It is secured around the perimeter with staples, moving 5-7 cm away from its edge. Holes for the viewing eye and locks are immediately cut out in it.
  • The next step is to attach the upholstery material itself – artificial leather – to the surface, on top of the insulation.

It is wrapped around the edges of the insulation and secured in the upper corners with staples. If the upholstery is planned with a special pattern, then markings are carried out on the material fixed on top.

If the leatherette should be fixed only around the perimeter, then decorative nails are hammered at the same distance from each other of 60 ÷ 80 mm. The material is stretched as it is nailed, since after completion of the work it must be perfectly flat.

Upholstery on the outside of a wooden door

The external upholstery of a door opening into the interior of the apartment occurs as follows:

  • Previously closed position Use a pencil to draw a rectangle of the door frame on the door leaf - this line will show at what distance from the edge the upholstery should be installed. The remaining distance will be needed for the "quarter" selected in the door jamb.
  • The next step is to fix the insulation material with a deviation of one centimeter inward from the drawn line.
  • Then the main cladding material is nailed onto the door along the outlined line. bend its edge V inside, similar indoor installation, but the lower edge of the material is still left free.
Feature— sealing rollers are attached not to the door leaf, but to the frame
  • On the outside, the insulation bead is installed on three sides not on the door, but on the posts and crossbar of the door jamb, except for the bottom side. Nailing such a roller to the threshold is absolutely pointless, since it will not perform its functions, and besides, it will quickly come off or be erased from constant contact with the shoes of people passing through the door.

The strip of leatherette is secured with the front side to the jamb with a stapler, a strip of insulation is installed in it, the second side of the material is tucked inward, forming a roller, and nailed with decorative nails. The roller should rest 15 - 20 mm on the door when it is closed, but you need to make sure that it does not rest on the keyhole.

  • The lower insulation roller cannot be too bulky; it is attached to the door leaf itself and must fit snugly against the threshold.
  • Next, the main upholstery fabric is stretched and nailed onto the lower roller.
  • The last step, after upholstering both sides, is to install all the door accessories - peephole, handles and locks. It is very important to carefully make small cuts in the trim. The main thing is not to cut the material more than is required, otherwise the door will immediately lose its respectable appearance.

Entrance doors

Features of working on a metal door

Usually installed as an external one, always opening outwards. It would also be a good idea to insulate it from the inside and transform it on both sides.

Outer side

When transforming and insulating a metal door, do not use insulating rollers around the perimeter. This door has a completely different purpose - it is used as the main protection of the entrance to the home and ill-wishers, and only then - as additional protection by cold.

Installation of upholstery and insulation on metal from the outside is carried out using glue. In this case, the insulation is cut out to be 10 ÷ 15 mm smaller than the door leaf, both in length and width. The upholstery material should exceed its size by 50-60 mm - this part of the material will be folded around metal shelves door leaf.

  • Glue is applied in strips to the metal surface, at a distance of 10 ÷ 15 mm from the edge, and in several places in the middle of the plane.
  • Then insulation is laid on it and pressed well against the door leaf. You need to give the glue under the insulation time to dry. The specific period will be indicated in the instructions for use of the specific composition.
  • Next, you can start gluing the leatherette. To the back metal plate From the top of the door, glue is applied at a distance of 50 mm. He needs to be given a few minutes to set.
  • Then, having marked the middle of the width of the door and the cladding material, it must be applied to the glued area according to the marks and pressed carefully, and then give some time for a good setting.
  • The next step is to sequentially glue the side parts of the door in the same way - the sheathing material is folded over the shelves and glued. If, when pulling, excess dermatin is formed, even a few millimeters, it needs to be cut off sharp knife, otherwise it will interfere when closing the door. If the covering material is thick enough, you may have to cut corners to make the covering as neat as possible.

Inner side

If the inside of the metal door is not insulated, then you should think about this measure. Usually with reverse side a metal door looks like a frame welded from corners and a profile pipe onto which it is welded a metal sheet, acting as a door leaf. We already have it covered with artificial leather.

Now you need to insulate and finish inner part doors.

- In this case, polystyrene foam, which has the thickness of a door frame, is perfect for insulation.

— You will also need wooden slats of the same thickness.

— To seal the joints and seams, you will need polyurethane foam.

— It is necessary to prepare a drill with a drill bit for metal screws.

- For interior decoration Thin plywood, soft insulation and leatherette can be used.

  • The first step is to attach it to the frame. wooden planks. To do this, in the corners or profile pipe drill holes and secure the strips to them with self-tapping screws. The slats are necessary so that it is convenient to attach plywood or other internal cladding to them.

  • To remove “cold bridges”, any gaps between the metal and the slats are filled with polyurethane foam. By the way, it will give additional rigidity to the fastening of the slats, as it also has pronounced adhesive properties.

  • After the slats are screwed and treated with foam, polystyrene foam panels are installed between them. The gaps between them and the slats are also carefully filled with mounting foam.

  • While the foam is drying, you can start preparing plywood sheet. Its thickness must be chosen in such a way that the door is easily pressed against the jamb, especially since insulation and sheathing will also be installed on it.
  • The plywood blank should have the size of the inside of the door, insulated with foam plastic, plus the width of the frame along the upper and lower sides of the perimeter of the door leaf.
  • Thin insulation is glued to the entire area of the plywood.
  • Next, the plane is completely covered with leatherette, bending it to inner side. The material is secured with glue and additionally secured in several places with brackets.
  • When the panel is completely ready, the location is marked on it wooden slats, screwed to metal frame. This process must be done very carefully so that there are barely noticeable points on the sheathing, along which decorative nails will be driven.
  • It is possible that you will have to make one more hole in the corners and fix the corners of the plywood sheathing with self-tapping screws to ensure a tight fit of this overlay to the metal frame.

It should be noted that, if desired, the plywood overlay can be replaced with ordinary lining made of natural wood or laminated fiberboard. Starting from the bottom, it is attached to the same installed slats.

Upholstering a door with leather or leather is not at all difficult. By doing this work yourself, the apartment owner can save quite a lot a large sum. To facilitate the calculations and the upholstery process, you can purchase a ready-made kit, which includes a set of materials designed to decorate a standard door.

Video - How to properly upholster a door with leatherette

If you want to update the entrance to your home without significant expenses, there is an excellent way out of the situation - upholstering the door with dermantine yourself. It is actually very simple to do this work, but you must first clarify all the nuances. Depending on the material from which the door leaf is made and the direction in which the door opens, there are certain differences in the principle of attaching the new upholstery.

Covering with dermantine is a great way to update a door

Preparatory work

Among all the things that can be used to cover an old wooden or metal door, dermantin is certainly the best option, it is quite affordable, looks good and is easy to work with.

First of all, you need to purchase all the necessary materials:

  • dermantin (should be 10 cm larger than the door leaf on each side);
  • lining material;
  • furniture nails;
  • thin decorative cord;
  • glue;
  • furniture stapler.

It is better to remove the door leaf from the hinges, it will be easier to work with. Then remove all the fittings, remove the old covering and clean the door of dust and grease.

In order to sheathe the door with dermantine as correctly as possible, you need to pay attention to the direction in which it opens, this is necessary in order to use the required number of rollers in each case, if outward, you need four pieces for each side, inward, three are enough. These rollers will contribute to better insulation of the opening.

Upholstery front door carries a high mechanical load - this must be taken into account when selecting dermantine

For each roller you will need a strip of dermantine 10-15 cm wide and a piece of lining, for example synthetic padding. Fasten one edge of the strip along one side of the door, face down, then roll the padding polyester with a roller and wrap it with the other end of the dermantine. The work can be done using a stapler, nails or glue in the case of a metal sheet.

Fastening the lining material

Before sheathing the front door with dermantine, you should take care of its heat and sound insulation. If you use foam rubber, the effect will be minimal, it is better to purchase more modern material– isolon, it is quite dense and copes well with these tasks. The lining should completely cover the door leaf; on the hinge side, when swinging outward, a small indentation should be left.

Foam rubber is most often used as a lining material.

If you are working with a wooden door, attach the lining using a furniture stapler, placing staples every 15-20 cm around the perimeter of the door. If you need to sheathe a metal door, the panel is covered with a layer of glue, insulation is laid on top and carefully pressed.

Working with dermantine

Now let's figure out how to cover a metal door directly with dermantine. To neatly decorate the edges, you need to tuck the dermantine and use staples to secure its edge from the inside, then apply glue to the hem, the edge of the material and press it. You need to move gradually in one direction.

Door upholstery is done using the simplest tools

Upholstering a wooden door with dermantine with your own hands is much easier - we fold the edges of the material and nail it with furniture nails with a wide head in increments of 10-15 cm.

When performing this work, it is necessary to ensure that the places where the insulating rollers are attached do not peek out from under the folded edge of the dermantine; in addition, you need to step back a few millimeters from the edge so that the new upholstery does not interfere with the free movement of the canvas.

Final design

The last stage is the installation of fittings. In the new upholstery, it is necessary to cut the holes slightly smaller size holes in the canvas, this is very simple, since they can be easily felt through the dermantine and the backing. Reinstall the handle and lock peephole, loops. Then you can begin installing the canvas in the opening, place it on the hinges and you can enjoy the work done.

Impeccable high-quality execution of the front door upholstery with dermantine

To make the final result look a little more interesting, you can not just sheathe the front door from the inside, but add several shaped elements to its surface. To do this, you can use the remaining furniture nails. Carefully mark the places for their installation on the surface of the dermantine; after you hammer in the nails, you can tuck a decorative cord under them. The dermantine and soft lining will be transformed: the contours will be pressed through and a peculiar pattern will appear on the surface of the door. Usually diamonds are made this way, but other patterns can be used.

Schemes of decorative door trim

It is easiest to work with a wooden door, but with a sufficiently thick and dense layer of substrate, you can make such decor on iron door. To do this, you need to secure nails or buttons with a strong thread on the back side before sheathing the fabric, connecting foam rubber and dermantin.

Covering a door with dermantine yourself is quite simple and interesting, and besides, it allows you not only to save on buying a new door, but also gives you a unique opportunity to create your own original version of the finish. At correct execution it will look no worse than the industrial version.

Previously, a door upholstered with leatherette or similar leatherette was considered chic, and not every apartment could boast such decor for the entrance panel. However, even today such finishing will not be superfluous. And it’s not just about using upholstery as decoration; the strength properties of leatherette, combined with insulation, perform some useful functions. This is a heat insulator, a sound barrier, and also protects the canvas from damage.

This is what a leatherette door looks like

But, upholstering a wooden door with dermantine is a scrupulous process, requiring attention to detail and compliance technological nuances. How to do this work to get a high-quality result?

When planning to restore or upholster wooden doors with dermantine yourself, it is worth considering the features of the work:

But, before you start directly reupholstering the surface of an old wooden door with a leather substitute, it is worthwhile to thoroughly prepare the door, if it is not new.

Preparatory work before upholstery

All preliminary preparations of the entrance system for upholstering the surface with a substitute can be divided into several stages:

And only after this you can begin finishing the front door with granite.

Dismantling works

Before upholstering the door with leather with your own hands, you need to dismantle the door for more convenient work. The fabric must be removed from the loops. The process itself can be performed in two ways, depending on the design of the canopies.

Input sheets are usually secured in the box using card dismountable loops installed with an insert.

Dismantling in this case is quite simple, you need to open it and lift it. After which the door can be easily removed.

Internal entrance panels are often secured to non-removable card canopies. To remove them, you need to unscrew the fastening screws screwed into the frame, and then dismantle the door. You also need to remove all the fittings: the locks are disassembled and removed, the handles are unscrewed, and the peephole is removed.

Door prepared for leatherette upholstery

The door needs to be placed on stands or a table for further preparation.

Recovery process

All old finishing must be removed, including the paint layer. If there are defects, it is not necessary to eliminate everything; the main thing is to get smooth and strong edges and end parts of the canvas. Also, to preserve the surface, you need to paint the canvas or open the wood with varnish.

The process of varnishing a wooden door

Particular attention should be paid when the sides of the door are distorted due to dry wood. It is important to plan the parameters of the canvas so that after upholstery it always works smoothly.

Material and tools

The main material for work is leather substitute, but as mentioned above, it can be different. The most commonly used fabric is PVC-based - vinyl artificial leather. The substitute palette is presented in various tones, allowing you to choose a material that matches the decor of the room. This fabric is durable and more resistant to abrasion compared to other analogues.

Leatherette or granitol is less durable, but it has not lost its relevance with the advent of modern analogues. When buying fabric for upholstery, it is worth remembering that you need to take it more area the door itself, since the edges either need to be folded at the edges, or it will be necessary to create rollers with a bend of approximately 100 mm around the entire perimeter.

In addition, insulation is needed for the entrance sheets; traditional foam rubber, isolon or other similar analogues are used as it. Classic nails with wide decorative heads can be used with special ones covered with a similar material.

Various nail head patterns

You may also need it at work construction stapler, scissors, knife, measuring tools, hammer. When everything is prepared, you can start covering the doors with leatherette.

Carrying out upholstery

As mentioned above, the upholstery of the entrance and interior door panels is slightly different in technology. The first ones for the vestibule are edged with a roller with a bend of leatherette, and the second ones are simply covered with leatherette. The video shows step by step process leatherette door upholstery.

Creating rollers for the front door

Initially, work begins on creating rollers around the entire perimeter of the door leaf. The process works as follows:

You can also go a different route when making rollers. Initially, strips of granite are fastened to the canvas with staples, after which insulation is laid out, and, after wrapping the edges of the leatherette, the product is fixed to the wood.

Example of mounted rollers on a door

When assembling the structure of the rollers with subsequent fixation, you need to position them so that their edge protrudes from the edge of the input web by 5-10 mm.
Afterwards, you can begin directly covering the entire surface with a leather substitute.

Upholstery

The technology for performing front door upholstery is as follows:
