Women's handball Olympics schedule. Dream Team! Russia has Rio gold! What was the most difficult moment for you?

Dmitry ZELENOV
from the Olympic Park

For more than half your life you do one thing, give your all to your profession, go through ups, downs and disappointments. For more than half your life you pass through dozens, hundreds of other destinies - and you don’t always receive gratitude for it. For more than half your life you have been plowing and moving towards your only cherished goal.

The unusually long journey is now over - at the age of 60 he became an Olympic champion. And he deserved this victory like no one else!

SKILLS

How difficult it is to get ready for the next game when just recently you really won great victory! After the mind-blowing semi-final with the Norwegians, our girls admitted that this was probably the main match in their careers. Yes, they didn’t even need to say anything, we ourselves saw how after the siren they collapsed where they were standing and cried out loud. Strongest emotions. And very dangerous on the eve of the final.

Intellectually, the team understood: this is not all, the main battle is ahead, euphoria is now enemy number one, but emotionally many were gutted, nothing can be done about it. It was difficult to overwhelm France with the mood and the famous Russian spirit after the Norwegian thriller. Craftsmanship came to the fore.

Fortunately, our craftsmanship is in perfect order!

The game did not indulge in results - the teams acted strictly in defense, the goalkeepers obviously had a good night's sleep before the match. The Russians rarely managed to fight their way through the powerful French women and bring things to a throw. Sometimes long-range shots helped, and our team scored several important goals from the penalty spot early on.

Russia as a whole looked like a very calm and confident team. We immediately seized the advantage, then lost it somewhat, but by the break we pulled away again - 10:7.

The Russian national team was one half away from going down in history.

REMEMBER THESE NAMES

There was everything in this match - misses, goalkeeping feats, and the bars that saved us and the French women (mostly us, thanks to the bars!). But even when fate seemed to have decided to laugh at Trefilov, and the opponent caught up with us in the second half, Russia did not lose its head. I looked carefully at the bench after one of the unfortunate misses - our handball players were smiling.

At that moment it became clear: we will not miss ours today. Russia has been walking towards this victory for too long to stop one step short of the top. And we brought the matter to a landslide victory!

In two weeks, this team has become almost like home for many Russian fans. Much closer than, for example, the football team. And it's not just about the result. It's about attitude - towards yourself, the sport and the fans. Girls deserve to have their names spoken a little more often than once every four years.

Our magnificent three goalkeepers, each of whom contributed to the victory - selfless Anna Sedoykina, dropped out due to injury at the beginning of the tournament, confident and calm Tatyana Erokhina, flexible and fearless Victoria Kalinina.

Our jet edges are sisters Anna Vyakhireva And Polina Kuznetsova who always scored at the right moment, and a young mother Marina Sudakova, who recently returned to handball, but in what amazing shape!

Our youngest and most promising point guard Daria Dmitrieva, over whom Trefilov joked all the way, and her colleague in the role Ekaterina Ilyina, who scored so many important seven-meter kicks in the match with Norway!

Our Miss Reliability Anna Sen, who defended the goal no worse than the goalkeepers. "This is our final, we have to take it," she said before the game

Our old guard, who ate more than a pound of salt with Trefilov - Irina Bliznova, Vlada Bobrovnikova, Victoria Zhilinskaite, Olga Akopyan, Maya Petrova, Ekaterina Marennikova.

Our coaching tandem, of course - in addition to Evgenia Trefilova, is there some more Levon Hakobyan, who did a lot of invisible but very important work.

And, of course, the head of the handball federation - the man who actually revived this sport - Sergey Shishkarev.

Remember these names. Names of Olympic champions!

Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). Olympic Games 2016. Handball. August 20.

On Saturday they will play their first match at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

The Russian women's team won silver medals at the 2008 Games in Beijing, and also won the world championships four times, but the last victory dates back to 2009. After this, Russian handball players began to decline - at the European and World Championships they could not be among the winners, and at the London Olympics they dropped out of the fight for medals at the quarterfinal stage, losing to the Koreans. After this, the head coach, with whom most of the Russians’ victories in modern history, resigned.

However, in 2013, he again took the helm of the team. At the 2015 World Championships, the Russian team, according to many experts, was among the contenders for awards, but suffered a disappointing defeat in the quarterfinals from the Polish team, eventually becoming fifth and gaining the right to take part in the Olympic qualifying tournament. In the qualifications held in Astrakhan, the Russians guaranteed themselves participation in the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. According to experts, the Russian team at the 2016 Games is among the favorites along with the Norwegians, Brazilians and Dutch.

According to the results of the draw at the group stage of the 2016 Games, the Russian team will meet with the teams of South Korea (August 6), France (August 8), Sweden (August 10), Argentina (August 12) and the Netherlands (August 14). The top two teams from the group will advance to the quarterfinals of the Olympic tournament. The game for third place and the final in Rio will be held on August 20.

On the eve of the start of the Olympics, the Russian team lost several key players due to injuries - among them Lyudmila Postnova, Ksenia Makeeva, Polina Gorshkova and Olga Chernoivanenko.

The final roster for the Rio Olympics ultimately included 15 handball players. These are goalkeepers Anna Sedoykina (Rostov-Don), Tatyana Erokhina (Lada), Victoria Kalinina (Astrakhanochka), as well as field players Anna Vyakhireva, Anna Sen, Ekaterina Ilyina, Vladlena Bobrovnikova, Maya Petrova (all - " Rostov-Don"), Marina Sudakova, Ekaterina Marennikova (both - "Kuban"), Irina Bliznova, Daria Dmitrieva, Olga Akopyan (all - "Lada"), Polina Kuznetsova, Victoria Zhilinskaite (both - "Astrakhanochka").

Before the Olympic Games, the entire Russian team, including injured players, was tested for doping, all tests gave a negative result. The Russians received permission from the International Handball Federation (IHF) to participate in the Olympics. Later their right to play in Rio de Janeiro

The second Olympics in a row at the finish line gives Russian fans a fantastic victory in terms of drama and emotion in a team sport. In London, the heroes were the male volleyball players who pulled out an almost hopeless final against the Brazilians. Now we give a standing ovation to our women's handball team, which created a real miracle in Rio.

It’s impossible not to fall in love with this team, and I wouldn’t be surprised if after the summer holidays crowds of girls and boys line up in the handball sections. This contrast is especially strong against the backdrop of the football players who weakly and pointlessly traveled to France that same summer. Perhaps for the first time at this Olympics I saw Brazilians openly and consciously rooting for Russia. No, in principle, the hosts of the Games treat us completely normally - when we meet, they smile, shout “Yuri Gagarin” and are generally very nice. But for some reason they usually don’t get sick, or simply don’t express their emotions in any way. But in women's handball everything was different. And when, in the final game, impressive groups of Frenchmen sang their signature Allez les bleus, the locals answered them with a cheerful “Russia”. And we were absolutely sincerely happy when our girls won their most important match in their lives. They probably just felt that the Russians were beating with their hearts, and not just with their bodies.

Before each meeting of the Olympic tournament at the Future Arena, where handball players competed, the anthems of the participating countries were played. Russian girls always sang it so that it could be heard in the stands. And when journalists tortured them in the mixed zone, what is the difference between matches for the club and the national team, they always answered simply: “Here we are not playing for money, but for our country, for Russia.”

To understand the scale of what this team did, you just need to rewind a little back four years. Olympics in London, quarter-finals. The Russian team, at that time a four-time world champion, sensationally loses South Korea. Evgeniy Trefilov resigns and soon suffers a micro-infarction - obviously, such stories leave wide scars on the heart. And handball players, without their charismatic coach, who gave this team 12 years of his life, are instantly going downhill. And they are not selected for the 2013 World Cup. That is, they don’t go to the tournament at all, which they won only four years ago. The bottom turned out to be much closer than we could have imagined. And the ascent with operational Trefilov, who had returned, took a lot of time. 14th place at the 2014 European Championships, then finishing in the top five at the World Championships, and receiving an Olympic license through qualification.

Let's be honest, such a track record is not exactly what you would expect from the team to win at the Olympics. Especially when you consider that in the entire history there have been no such victories at all, and the only success was “silver” at the Games in Beijing, with the final completely lost to the Norwegians. What Trefilov did with the girls to make them so miraculously transformed in Rio, we will probably have to figure out for a long time. But already at the group stage this team showed fantastic character. I pulled out a crazy match against the Koreans, where I lost seven goals and won five, taking revenge for London. She saved what seemed like a hopeless game against Sweden, where the gap reached six goals. To top it all off, they lost their main goalkeeper Anna Sedoykina, who was replaced during the tournament by Tatyana Erokhina, who urgently rushed to Rio.

And then there's Norway in the semi-finals. The main and undisputed favorite, the winner of the last two Olympics, the current world champion, and just a team that easily “brought” 10-12 goals to its opponents. When the girls, having beaten Angola in the quarterfinals, blue eye They said that they had surprises for Norway too, and they knew how to beat it, but it was still hard to believe. But they turned out to be right. A valid, dramatic match ended in overtime with a precise seven-meter throw by Ekaterina Ilyina - 38:37, and Russia in the final. Where she defeated France for the second time at the tournament. Without even allowing anyone to doubt their strength, the Russians were in the lead throughout almost the entire final, and naturally won 22:19. It's hard to believe, but a team that hadn't won anything for seven years ended up on the gold podium at the Olympic Games.

Well, then there were pure emotions and simple human happiness. “We are champions,” the girls shouted, running to the locker room. Where there were dances and hugs with Evgeniy Trefilov. Then the award ceremony, at which many could no longer hold back their tears - neither on the podium nor in the hall. And once again I became a little sad because of the strict Olympic rule, according to which only athletes, and not coaches, receive medals. Who else, but Evgeniy Trefilov, who spent his entire life and 32 years coaching career was heading towards this success, the “gold” of Rio would have looked as natural as possible.

Evgeniy Vasilyevich himself was unusually quiet. Journalists are accustomed to the fact that his every post-match speech guarantees an extravaganza. Trefilov’s phrases instantly diverge into quotes, which are just right to be published as a separate book. But this time Evgeniy Vasilyevich did without any “pearls”. I was very tired - both mentally and physically. “Guys, I’ll go. Let me go,” he begged, leaving after the press conference. And he went. “Handball Man,” as fans sometimes half-jokingly call him, brought women’s handball to highest point. He has earned the right to rest.

Well, the RG correspondent went with questions to our goalkeeper Tatyana Erokhina. She had to join the tournament as it went along, and Tatyana did it brilliantly. For example, in the final she repelled 11 shots from the French women out of 28 - a great statistic. Especially considering the status of the match and the level of the opponent.

Tatyana, what does a person with an Olympic gold medal around his neck feel?

Tatyana Erokhina: To be honest, I haven't realized it yet. Happiness is overwhelming, but awareness will come a little later.

If someone told you before the start of the Olympics that you would go through the tournament undefeated, would you believe it?

Tatyana Erokhina: Honestly? Of course not. I couldn't believe it.

Most difficult moment which one was it for you?

Tatyana Erokhina: When Anya Sedoykina was injured, and I came as a substitute, I had to immediately get into the game.

What emotions did the semi-final with Norway leave you with?

Tatyana Erokhina: We were happy. They cried and didn’t even believe that they had done it. But everything worked out for us.

Was it difficult to get ready for the final after this?

Tatyana Erokhina: It was difficult, but we decided that there was one step left. And we had to overcome this, win the final match and get our well-deserved gold medals. And today we had confidence that we had to press on and win.

What is the role of Evgeniy Trefilov in this victory?

Tatyana Erokhina: Huge role. If it weren't for him, we wouldn't be here.

Another heroine of the decisive matches is Ekaterina Ilyina. Which, of course, had to talk about the winning shot against the Norwegian team.

After the difficult semi-final with Norway, wasn’t it hard to get ready for the game with France?

Ekaterina Ilyina: Well, it was the final match. And we knew that we had no right to lose it. We tuned in, prepared, analyzed the opponent very seriously, and were worried. You know, the French women were glad that they qualified against us in the final, and not against the Norwegians. Evgeniy Vasilyevich told us about this, and it angered us even more. We came here to win, we won, and I’m very, very happy.

Why did you hide your talent as a penalty taker for so long, and revealed it at the end of the semi-final with Norway?

Ekaterina Ilyina:(Laughs) Everything has its time.

How difficult is it to reach the seven-meter mark when the fate of the team depends on your throw?

Ekaterina Ilyina: Yes, it was a very exciting moment. But I tried not to let fear in, not to be afraid. I didn't think about it.

What was the order of execution of seven-meter kicks? Before you, three of our girls missed.

Ekaterina Ilyina: Yes, they just said: “Who will go?” And everyone started talking: “Katya, go.” And Evgeny Vasilyevich said: “Well, Katyukha, come on.” Well, I went (laughs).

Was it easier in the final?

Ekaterina Ilyina: I don't think. Each game was difficult in its own way. And I won’t say that it was easy for us. This is the final match after all. It’s just that with the French women we believed in our strength, that we could win. And emotionally, they were probably better prepared.

Even when the French equalized the score in the middle of the second half, did doubts creep in?

Ekaterina Ilyina: No. Yes, somewhere deep down you think: “God, they’re already catching up.” But we still had the strength to fight to the end.
