People often say: “If there were no wine, we would not be drunkards.” Aren't they crazy?! They themselves sin, but it’s God’s gift?! Is wine the cause of all evil?! Of course not! The cause of these evils is intemperance, the abuse of wine. It’s better to say: “If there were no drunkenness, then...” You can also say: “It would be better if there was no iron, because there are murderers; if there were no night, there would be no thieves, etc.” You just want to destroy and exterminate everything. And all because it is not wine that needs to be despised, but the dependence on it. This is a satanic spirit.

In addition to the petitioner himself and his loved ones, at this moment the Mother of God and the invoked saints stand before God, which makes the prayer stronger than usual house rule.

Healing from a severe addiction will require a lot of work. Work for the sake of love for one's neighbor is accepted by God, who says in the Gospel: “Whoever comes to Me I will never cast out.” First of all, you should contact the priest and listen to his advice in the current situation.

Performing a special prayer service

When performing a separate prayer service, the “Inexhaustible Chalice” icon is placed on the lectern in front of those praying. The priest begins the prayer with an exclamation, the troparion to the Holy Spirit “Heavenly King” is sung (you must sign the cross and bow) and a psalm is read, calling on the Lord to hear the prayer of those gathered. After the Psalm, the troparion and kontakion of the Most Holy Theotokos “Inexhaustible Chalice” are sung:

Troparion to the Most Holy Theotokos before Her Icon “The Inexhaustible Chalice”, tone 4

Today we are the harbinger of faithfulness to the Divine and wonderful image of the Most Holy Mother of God, filling the hearts of the faithful with the heavenly Inexhaustible Chalice of Her mercy, and showing miracles to the faithful.

Seeing and hearing, we spiritually celebrate and cry warmly: O Lady of Mercy, heal our ailments and passions, beseeching Thy Son, Christ our God, to save our souls.

Kontakion of the Mother of God before Her icon “The Inexhaustible Chalice”, tone 4

We have been granted a chosen and wondrous deliverance - Your honorable image, Lady Theotokos, as having been delivered by its appearance from mental and physical ailments and sorrowful circumstances, we offer grateful praise to You, All-Merciful Intercessor.

You, the Lady, whom we call the Inexhaustible Chalice, bow down graciously to our sighs and heartfelt cries, and grant deliverance to those suffering from the disease of drunkenness, so that with faith we cry to Thee: Rejoice, Lady, the Inexhaustible Chalice, quenching our spiritual thirst.

While singing the troparion and kontakion, you need to focus on prayer to the Mother of God, asking Her on behalf of all those gathered, as the only strong Prayer Book, to heal the sick person from his illness, and to forgive the sins of his loved ones. Then the canon of the “Inexhaustible Chalice” can be read with repeated repetition of the refrain “Most Holy Theotokos, save us!” During the chorus, you also need to bow with the sign of the cross. Frequent bows help to distract yourself from extraneous thoughts and feel like you are standing before God.

In the middle of the canon, an excerpt from the Gospel about the Mother of God is read. When Mary was still carrying the Lord in her womb, She came to visit her relative Elizabeth. It was revealed to Elizabeth that Mary would give birth not to an ordinary child, but to God Himself. She joyfully met the Blessed Virgin, predicting Her future glory “from all generations.” While reading the Gospel, worshipers stand straight, heads bowed, and listen carefully to the sacred words.

reference Information

The Orthodox Church has always had a negative attitude towards excesses that destroy the spirit and body. Therefore, holy men helped those suffering who sought help for healing. Why is the sobriety of parishioners so important to clergy? The human body is the vessel of the soul. By clouding the consciousness with alcohol and destroying the body, the patient committed the sin of desecrating a shrine.

The dead who died from drunkenness were considered “hostages,” that is, those who had passed into another world in an unnatural way. Such bodies were buried without accompanying prayers, far from ordinary townspeople, among the graves:

  • suicides;
  • sorcerers;
  • drowned people;
  • unbaptized children.

The problem of drunkenness has always been relevant, but with the advent of strong alcohol began to gain momentum. The “finishing” period was characterized by the high cost of wine, so not everyone could afford such excess. Vodka has become a godsend for manufacturers and merchants: a minimum number of components and effort, but quick effect from drinking and the body’s addiction to the poison.

Ethanol is the main component of all alcoholic drinks. Once in the human body, the substance rearranges the functioning of all organs and systems. After some time, the patient can no longer physically and mentally exist without another dose of poison. A short-term refusal of a dose provokes a withdrawal syndrome, reminiscent of the “withdrawal” of a drug addict.

History of appearance

Among the heavenly patrons of the Orthodox, a special place is occupied by the Mother of God, who is often depicted with her Son. She is an intermediary between the human world and higher powers. Therefore, believers at all times turned their prayers to the icons of the good patroness.

The history of the emergence of faith in the miraculous power of the “Inexhaustible Chalice” begins in the 70s of the 19th century. In the Tula province there lived a former military man who was addicted to alcohol. The drinking was so strong and hopeless that he drank away the last of his property and began begging. After another drinking binge, the man’s legs were paralyzed, but this was not a sign for the stubborn man - he continued to flood his eyes every day.

Once in a dream, the poor fellow saw a white-bearded old man, who, by order, advised him to go to the Serpukhov monastery of the Lady Theotokos. In this place there was an icon of the “Inexhaustible Chalice”, in front of which a prayer service had to be served. The man did not have funds for the trip, so he decided to ignore the message from heaven. The dream was repeated three times and the cripple crawled off on a long journey.

Thanks to your own willpower and help ordinary people, a former military man reached Serpukhov. At the monastery, a man asked to say a prayer in front of the “Inexhaustible Chalice” icon for his recovery. The nuns were surprised because they had not heard of such an image. After a long search, they found the face of the Mother of God, with the signed name on the back. Not far from her hung the image of an old man that the cripple had dreamed about. It was Reverend Varlaam.

Prayer in front of the “Inexhaustible Chalice” icon helped the former military man get back on his feet and cured him from drunkenness. The news of the miracle quickly spread throughout Russian Empire. A crowd of women flocked to the monastery, wanting to rid their husbands or sons of the addiction.

By turning prayer to the image, a person finds a merciful helper

The “Inexhaustible Chalice” icon, in terms of writing style, belongs to the “Oranta” style: the Mother of God with her hands raised up, and in front of her is a vessel with the Son. The clergy explain that the container presented is an eternal source of consolation and joy. By turning prayer to the image, a person finds a merciful helper.

After the miraculous discovery of the “Inexhaustible Chalice” icon, the craftsmen made hundreds of lists (exact copies), which they sent to everyone. Now in almost every church those who are thirsty acquire the image of the Mother of God with the Son to get rid of alcoholism.

How it works

Modern people, especially those brought up in the spirit of atheism, do not understand how to get rid of drunkenness by praying to the “Inexhaustible Chalice” icon. In the technological age, such techniques seem wild and ancient. But this is not the first year that people have been asking for the image for husbands and sons who are dying from alcoholism.

If in prayer you ask not for yourself, but for another person, then such a request will be heard. Desperate relatives do not know how else to save alcoholics from drunkenness. A feature of dependence is the absence critical thinking– patients think that they have no problems and refuse to be treated. There is no article in domestic laws providing for therapy without the consent of the drinker.

Having tried all the methods, people resort to the very last thing - faith. The clergy claim that by saying the words of prayer from a pure heart, a person receives from the Mother of God intercession before the Son and healing from drunkenness. In ancient times, when there were no psychologists and psychiatrists, priests played the role of healers of souls. By turning to higher powers as the last resort, people gained confidence in their own actions. In order not to give up treatment halfway through, prayers were said for help to the Mother of God and her Son.

“Oh, Most Merciful Lady! We now resort to Your intercession, do not despise our prayers, but mercifully hear us: wives, children, mothers and those obsessed with the serious illness of drunkenness, and for this, for the sake of our mother - the Church of Christ and the salvation of those who fall away, brothers and sisters, and heal our relatives. Oh, Merciful Mother of God, touch their hearts and quickly raise them from the falls of sin, bring them to saving abstinence. Pray to Your Son, Christ our God, to forgive us our sins and not to turn His mercy away from His people, but to strengthen us in sobriety and chastity. Accept, O Most Holy Theotokos, the prayers of mothers who shed tears for their children, of wives who weep for their husbands, of children, the orphaned and the poor, abandoned as lost, and of all of us who fall before Your icon. And may this cry of ours, through Your prayers, come to the Throne of the Most High. Cover and protect us from the evil trap and all the snares of the enemy, in the terrible hour of our exodus, help us to pass through the airy ordeals without stumbling, with Your prayers deliver us from eternal condemnation, may God’s mercy cover us for the endless ages of ages. Amen".

Getting rid of drunkenness by praying to the “Inexhaustible Chalice” icon is old method, known since the end of the 19th century. There are many ways to treat alcoholism, but integrated approach and, armed with faith, you will be able to achieve positive results.

Today the problem of alcoholism is more relevant than ever before. More than 90% of murders occur against the background of alcohol intoxication, and just over 80% of suicides were committed under the influence of heavy libations. It’s impossible to count how many families have broken up or are constantly in conflict due to this illness.

The numbers are simply terrifying and constantly growing. But what to do when all the methods have been used, and the alcoholic continues to drink? In this case, there is only one thing left - to go to church and ask for mercy from God. Prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos The inexhaustible cup is considered the most powerful way and, most importantly, effective to bring the patient to reason and stop his craving for alcohol.

A little history

One of the very first legends about the miraculous icon belongs to one of the monastery servants, Lizaveta. This nun was lucky enough to become witness the appearance of the face of the Virgin Mary in 1879. From then on, Lizaveta began to serve only this icon until her departure to better world. The abbess of the monastery told this story to the world.

A retired soldier lived in the province of Tula district. And then the time was dashing, turbulent. One of the peasants lost his legs, and the reason for this was the unrestrained consumption of alcoholic beverages and a craving for beer. He spent the entire pension that the state paid him in taverns; even despite his weakness and illness, he did not look away from the bottle.

But one day a miracle happened. An old man appeared to a soldier in a dream. His face ordered the soldier to appear at the Serpukhov monastery and celebrate Mass in front of the “Inexhaustible Chalice” icon. After this, he was promised that he would forget about spiritual and physical infirmities, and would also become healthy in both body and spirit.

However, the soldier did not pay attention to these words and continued to drown his troubles in wine. But the elder did not leave the poor fellow, he appeared to him again and again, already angrily saying that the soldier needed to immediately go to the Serpukhov region. Then the drunkard began to think and went on his knees to look for the miraculous icon.

Not having gone even half way, the wanderer got tired and fell on his back, falling into a heavy sleep. God did not give up on the traveler and gave him the strength of healthy legs so that he could get to the place and perform a godly task. Waking up from sleep, the drunkard was able to continue the journey on his own feet, helping himself with sticks. A little time later, he reached the monastery.

At the threshold of the monastery he was met by Abbess Zacharia. He told her about his nightly visions and asked permission to offer prayer to the image of the Most Holy Theotokos. However, the monastery did not know about such an image and he was told so.

The abbess, however, suggested that perhaps this is the image that hangs on the bell tower. After all, according to the description, it is very similar. Imagine the surprise of all the parishioners and clergy when they saw the inscription “The Inexhaustible Chalice” on the back of the image. The former drunkard returned home a strong and completely healthy man.

Word of mouth about it amazing miracle in a very short time it spread throughout all the surrounding areas. Soon rivers of people flowed to the icon to serve the Inexhaustible Chalice. And most of them were among those who were obsessed with alcohol.

The first icon has not survived to this day. But there are several splits from the holy face, which are kept in monasteries and temples. Two lists are most protected - one is stored in Vedeno Vladychny Convent, and the second - in Vysotsk Monastery.

Each of these icons is considered miraculous. They exude myrrh and everyone who came to bow to them received strength, health and healing.

Who can say a prayer

Most often, mothers of those people who suffer from drunkenness are allowed to read a prayer and serve a prayer service. But many wives also help by serving prayer services for their husbands. The icon also helps when children, sisters or brothers turn to it with a prayer for healing from drunkenness or any illness of their parent or brother. In general, you can read the prayer:

  • brother;
  • wife;
  • mothers;
  • children.

It doesn’t matter who exactly says the words of the prayer, the main thing is to believe that they work and have pure thoughts. It must be remembered that it is extremely difficult to overcome the force that destroys human health. The process of struggling for a sober and conscious life sometimes becomes extremely lengthy. But here it is important to be patient and call on the saints every night with a prayer for the protection of your relative.

Prayer text

Prayer The inexhaustible cup from the husband’s drunkenness consists of the following words:

Oh, our most merciful Lady! We now turn to your great protection and intercession, resorting, do not despise your prayers, mother. Descend, hear us graciously, the people calling to you: despairing women, saddened sisters, weeping mothers.

Our relatives are possessed by a serious demonic illness - drunkenness goes with them and takes them away from the Church of Christ. He excommunicates from his mother and deprives the saint of salvation. Heal your loved ones with love, touch, Mother of God, their frivolous hearts and protect sinners from deep falls, lead them to saving abstinence.

Persuade Christ the God of man and His Son, may the Almighty have mercy on human sins, may He not turn His mercy away from us, may He secure those for whom we ask for sobriety. Accept this prayer, Our Most Holy Theotokos, the cry of mothers for lost sons, the cries of wives for spouses, for forgotten families.

Save and protect us from the machinations of the enemy, and from catching the evil demon, the orphan and wretched beast. Help us to go through the difficult hour of exodus through the entire path of the ordeal that is unstumbling with the power of the power of the word of prayer. Deliver us sinners from the age-old weeping, may all the mercy of God cover us forever and ever. Amen.

In order for prayer to take effect, it is not necessary to go to church or make a pilgrimage to monasteries. You can simply purchase an icon and hang it in your home, and read a prayer next to it. But the most powerful is the one pronounced by the mother.

My father drank a lot and became uncontrollable. His mother tried to treat him traditional ways, but all medical methods did not help at all or only helped for a short time. My father started drinking again and drinking even more. Then the desperate mother went to the temple and asked the priest to help her. He gave her a lot strong prayer. Not right away, but dad began to change. Maybe prayer helped, or maybe he himself realized that life was going downhill. The drinking has subsided and we are a happy family again.

Alcohol is a way to fill spiritual emptiness. Some try to get involved in sports, while others try to binge. But in any case, this is a way to fill the emptiness in the soul. But the more often a person goes to church, listens to services and prayers, the more his soul is filled with light. The inexhaustible cup really helps to cope with many ailments. I personally went through this. After the death of her parents, she began to drown her grief in wine. And if the priest had not prompted me to read this prayer at the service, I probably would not have been alive.

Svetlana

Mom drank and didn’t want to stop. Get treatment too. She said that there was no problem, that she could always stop drinking. I endured this for many years, and now my patience has run out. I asked the priest for a blessing and began to read a prayer every evening. I believed that she would help. And now, after two months, my mother practically does not take alcohol into her mouth. She again became that mommy who was always with us and loved us, not a glass.

There is a belief that a prayer to the Inexhaustible Chalice icon can heal drunkards from a serious illness and restore them to health. Relatives of alcoholics read in sacred places prayers and akathist in the hope of freeing those in need from vice.

The story of the discovery of the icon resembles a miracle. An unknown old man told a drinking soldier about its existence in a dream. He sent an alcoholic from the Tula province to a monastery located in the city of Serpukhov.

The soldier had difficulty getting to the appointed place. There he told the temple servants his story. However, they knew nothing about this icon and still began their search. As a result, in a small passage an icon was discovered with the inscription “Inexhaustible Chalice” with reverse side. The man served a prayer service before her and was completely cured of alcoholism. The news of the soldier’s recovery instantly spread throughout the country and people from all cities began to come to the monastery. After the revolution, atheists burned the icon, but two copies survived.

Today the icon is sold in all Orthodox churches. It depicts the Virgin Mary with raised hands, in the center there is a cup, and Jesus Christ is visible in it.

Where to place an icon in the house?

It is necessary to store the icon in the house in the “red corner” - a bright place that is clearly visible from all corners of the room.

If it is not possible to find such a place, then alternative option will become the eastern part of the room.

It is worth considering that the temple servants advise making separate shelves for icons, and not hanging them on the walls. The “Inexhaustible Chalice” can stand on the nightstand near the bed, providing protection during sleep. There should be no objects near the icon.

Features of prayer: its reading, rules

The inexhaustible cup prayer against drunkenness will help a person suffering from alcoholic or drug addiction. She will help heal herself, her husband, brother, son, mother and other relatives.

The “Inexhaustible Chalice” will be effective only if the patient himself desires his own healing.

It is possible to read a prayer service together in a church or in own home. At first, an alcoholic can only listen to prayer, but then he himself will not mind joining. While reading sacred text it is necessary to light a church candle.

You need to pray every day in the morning after waking up and in the evening before going to bed. It is often recommended to read morning prayer on an empty stomach, sitting or kneeling. The words of the prayer are pronounced out loud, and those who do not know the words by heart are allowed to read from the notes. The prayer against a son’s drunkenness is considered the most powerful; it is read for forty days, and with it an akathist.

You can order a prayer service in front of the icon in the temple. There are two options for serving the requirement:

  • separately, in the presence of the drunkard and his relatives;
  • How component general prayer service.

Both methods are equivalent.

The most powerful prayers are those read in one of the monasteries in the city of Serpukhov: “Vysotsky” - male or “Vladychny” - female.

In the monastery

Prayers are read on Sundays three times a day. The first time is in the morning, the second is performed after the Liturgy, it is also the sanctification of water. Pray to Your Son, Christ our God, to forgive us our sins and not to turn His mercy away from His people, but to strengthen us in sobriety and chastity.

Accept, O Most Holy Theotokos, the prayers of mothers who shed tears for their children, of wives who weep for their husbands, of children, orphans and wretches, abandoned by those who have gone astray, and of all of us who fall before Your icon. And may this cry of ours, through Your prayers, come to the throne of the Most High.

Cover and protect us from the evil trap and all the snares of the enemy, in the terrible hour of our exodus, help us to pass through the airy ordeals without stumbling, with Your prayers deliver us from eternal condemnation, so that the mercy of God will cover us for the endless ages of ages.
