The main material for making swings of any kind is wood. At the same time, almost any type of tree can be used to create a swing. Frame
The production of this swing is divided into several stages:
- Seat assembly.
- Preparing the frame.
- Installation of the structure.
- Finishing and decoration.
To make a seat in the shape of a bench, you need to prepare a wooden beam measuring 3x5 cm for the frame of the bench, and planks 2 cm thick to use as seat slats. The beams are cut into identical pieces of 40-60 cm. In pairs they are connected to each other so that the angle between the two segments is 100-110 0. For a bench designed for 2 adults, 3 such corner frames are enough. It is better to fasten them with bolts, additionally strengthening the joints with wood glue.
After the glue has dried, boards are attached perpendicularly to the frame using self-tapping screws. They can be attached either along the entire length of the corner frame, or placed only on the seat and back. A chain or rope is attached to the bench at 4 points of the frame: 2 on top, on the sides of the back, and 2 on the bottom. This is best done using eye bolts. At the top, the chains or ropes are secured in 2 carabiners, one on each side of the swing. The carabiners are attached to eye bolts installed in the support frame.
The support for the frame swing is made by connecting 2 logs or beams with a cross-section of 8x8 cm in the shape of the letter L, at an angle of 37 0. For greater reliability, it is better to dig the supports into the ground to a depth of 20-30 cm. The structure must be reinforced from below by connecting the logs with a board 1 m long. As a result, the side support will resemble the letter A. Then you need to build a second, exactly the same support.
Finished supports are dug in at a distance of 1.4-1.6 m from each other. At the top they are connected to each other by a log or board with a cross-section of 15x5 cm. At the bottom rear, the structure is reinforced with a board connecting the two supports.
To install a bench swing on a frame support, eye bolts are screwed into the top plank or log, at the same distance from the edges.

Hanging
To build the structure, you only need to make a seat and hang it on a support. If you plan to make a bungee, then it is enough to take a round cut of a log or a whole rounded log, no more than 30 cm long, and make a hole exactly in the middle. It is necessary to pass the rope through this hole, making several tight knots from below. At the top, the rope is attached to an eyelet carabiner, which is suspended from an eye bolt screwed into a suitable support. A thick and healthy tree branch is best suited as a support. For safety reasons, it is advisable that the bungee be attached to a branch no closer than 2 m from the tree trunk.
Also, a hanging swing can be built with a more stable seat. For this, you can use half a log, a board, or a full seat with a backrest. The type of fastening to the tree remains the same. However, it is no longer 1 rope that is connected to the seat, but 4, which are placed in the corners of the seat.
The seat in the form of a chair is made according to the same principle as for a swing bench. But the size of the bench must be halved.
Swing scales
Two, or less often four, children can ride on a scale swing at the same time. To create a balancer you will need a log more than 40 cm thick, as well as a pair wooden beams with a cross section of 10x3x8 cm. 2 small planks and a board measuring 250x15x10 cm will also be useful in the work.
The log will be used as a stand. It must be placed horizontally, and wooden blocks must be nailed from below, on both sides. They will provide the structure with durability. After this, a round recess is drilled in the board, suitable in size to the circumference of the log. After this, small strips are nailed to it at a distance of 30-40 cm from the edges of the board. They are necessary so that children can hold on to them while riding.
This design is mobile. You can also build another version of the balancer:
- Two logs, 1.2 m long and 10 cm in diameter each, are dug into the ground to a depth of 60 cm. The distance between them should be 40 cm.
- 10 cm from the tops of the logs, in the middle of each of them, holes of 1.5 cm in diameter are drilled.
- V wooden block, 2.5 m long and with a diameter of 20 cm, drilled exactly in the middle through hole, with a diameter of 1.5 cm.
- The beam is placed exactly in the middle of the logs.
- A metal rod with a diameter of 1.5 cm is inserted into the holes. It connects both logs and beams. The length of the rod should be 60 cm.
After this, all that remains is to equip the edges of the beam with seats and handles, as well as treat the wood with an antiseptic and, if desired, paint it.
Operation and care
In order for a swing made and used in a summer cottage to last for several years, it needs proper care, as well as compliance special conditions operation:
- It is advisable to place a swing made of logs under a canopy that shelters the structure from rain;

In the photo above you can see how easy it is to make this swing from two pieces of rounded beams. Very simple model. We wrap two pieces of rounded logs with rope and fasten them with some tricky sea knot.
