How to choose fabric for a lampshade

First step

If the frame is cone-shaped, then you can lay out the paper, take a pencil and gradually roll the frame along the sheet, mark with a dotted line the lines of its sides.
The main thing is that the frame rotates completely; to do this, you can mark a reference point on it using a piece of thread or a pin. After this, you can connect the lines and cut out the template.
Second step
In order not to cut off more, or worse, less fabric, you need to attach the template to the frame of the lamp - it must completely fit. If the template is larger, you need to cut off the excess paper; if it is smaller, you will have to take the measurements again and make a new template.
Third step
When the size of the template matches the size of the base for the lampshade, you can begin to attach it to the fabric. If the material has a pattern, you need to position the template so that the drawn elements “look” in the right direction. You need to calculate everything so that, for example, you don’t cut off the head of a flying bird. Otherwise the lamp will look ugly.
The template must be applied to the wrong side of the fabric, and then it must be secured with pins. After this, you can carefully trace the template along the contour. If the fabric is dark in color, you can use not a simple pencil, but special fabric crayons or a piece of soap.
After this, you need to draw allowances. To do this, you need to draw lines at a distance of one and a half to two centimeters from the boundaries of the template.
Fourth step
Without removing the template from the fabric, you need to carefully remove the pins one at a time and wrap the seam allowances inside. The fold lines must be secured with pins.
Now you need to remove the template and fill sewing machine. The threads must be chosen so that they are almost invisible on the fabric.
Fifth step
Now you need to sew the resulting part on a typewriter. This needs to be done only on three sides - one of the sides must be left untreated in order to then form a seam on the frame itself.
You need to stitch at a distance of five to seven millimeters from the edge. If desired, you can process the sections. But in any case, they will have to be hidden when the fabric is glued to the frame.
Sixth step

The latter are, well, simply an aristocracy among lamps.
Of course, the main function of a floor lamp is to provide a certain level of illumination in a room or part of it, but their usefulness does not end there. Whatever the case, it won’t be mentioned for dinner, the designer would say that the floor lamp helps to “zone” the space. Obviously, the area in which the floor lamp is located is intended for relaxation - with a book, in soft chair and with a cat on my lap. In addition to the obvious functions, there is also a hidden functionality - decoration. You can choose an option for any interior style. There are models that will successfully fit into the interior and will not distract attention to themselves; in contrast to them, there are many floor lamps that can become a kind of highlight of the interior of a living room or bedroom, or even a storage room. It all depends on what effect we expect from the presence of a floor lamp in the room.

Having decided to make a small tabletop floor lamp, we were faced with the task of making a lampshade. It was decided to make it a rag, for this it was necessary wire frame. Since it was available, I used it.
What was used in the work.

Set of small metalworking tools, mallet, metal scissors. Good nippers. Soldering iron 65W with heating regulator, accessories. Definitely a compass. Jewelry jigsaw with accessories. Small brush for flux, sanding paper. For coating with varnish - dishes, brush.
Materials.
Galvanized steel wire with a diameter of 2mm. Solder POS-40, flux - “ soldering acid"(zinc chloride). A small piece of galvanized steel. LMB, rags.
Lampshades of this kind are traditionally made in the factory using resistance welding, but here, in the absence of such, soldering is used.
Galvanized steel wire was first used. The previous frame and similar works were made of brass, for easy soldering. But the cost of brass wire used for one frame was approximately equal to the cost of a whole coil of galvanized steel, from which dozens of such things can be made. Practice has shown that assembly is no less convenient; galvanized steel is soldered, and when selecting the appropriate flux, it works well. “Soldering acid” was used - zinc chloride. And the usual tin-lead POS-40.
First of all, we form “parallels” - rings. The wire was sold in the form of a small coil, and the cut pieces were already trying to curl into a ring; they just needed to be adjusted a little. To fix the “parallels” in their places, small nails are hammered into the wooden template; they prevent the rings from slipping.
The “parallel” rings are formed and soldered, we proceed to the “meridians”. It is convenient to measure the length with a string; I bite off the wire a little with a margin. The “meridian” was molded directly on the template. On the arcuate part, the workpiece had to be straightened a little, reducing its radius; in the lower part, the workpiece was straightened almost completely. Marks were made on a wooden block with a pencil, the wire of the “parallels” in these places was cleaned with medium-sized sandpaper and tinned with zinc chloride. Then the soldering areas of the “meridian” blanks were cleaned and tinned; there was no need to mark them - two ends and a bend in the middle. "Meridian" was applied to in the right place, with the left hand in a rag glove, the middle was pressed, flux was applied and soldering was done. Then the ends of the “meridian” were soldered, it was even simpler, the workpiece was molded so that the middle almost reached its place. After soldering it, the ends were pressed tightly against their “parallels”.
For simplicity, the workpiece was marked “visually”, by eye, that is. Four “meredians” are soldered in, two each, opposite each other. The angle is 90 degrees, well defined by the eye, then the “meridians” are soldered into the middle of the empty sections, where the marking task is also very simple - to divide the segment in half.
Several times we encountered such difficulties - a new solder next to the old one. There was no “stepped soldering” with different solders, just the “old” soldering was provided with an additional heat sink in the form of jaws of pliers. There was not enough heat to melt the solder and everything that was needed remained in place.
Well, the entire blank is evenly covered with “meridians,” but it’s somewhat sparse. I wanted the finished rag lampshade to not have any glaring “facetedness”. It was decided to add more “meridians” in between.
Well, it looks more like a hemisphere. Let's leave it. The small nails were pulled out and the frame was carefully removed from the blank.
Now you should worry about attaching it to the lamp. The lamp socket has a small E14 base, with a thread on the outside and a large carbolite nut on it. This nut holds the lampshade onto the lamp.
The area for the nut was cut out with my favorite tool – a jewelry jigsaw with a large file. Made from galvanized “roofing” steel 0.5mm. A square blank is cut out with metal scissors, diagonals are drawn, at the intersection, the blank is lightly punched. The leg of the compass is firmly installed in this hole without slipping.
Paradoxically, straight wires turned out to be not so easy to obtain - I had to do a fair amount of work with a mallet on a wooden stump. It was decided to make fastenings at four points, so as not to measure the corners with a protractor (usually, there are three of them - they save wire and make it a little easier to get to the light bulb).

Process of creation:
- First you need to prepare a plastic bottle for subsequent steps. Remove the label in advance, cut off the bottom, dry well.
- Then you need to remove the plastic spoons from the packaging and carefully cut off the unnecessary handles with a knife, leaving about 2-3 centimeters above the level of the “scoop”.
- You need to glue the scoop blanks to the base of the bottle. Apply a large amount of glue to the remaining “tail” and press it to the surface (with the convex side of the spoon facing out). It is necessary to cover the entire bottle in a circle until the entire perimeter is occupied by plastic “spoons”. It is advisable to arrange them in a checkerboard pattern and slightly move them together. This will leave fewer “free spots”.
- You need to remove the cartridge from the old unnecessary chandelier, and then place it in an already glued and dried bottle and fix it to the frame.

Process of creation:
- It is based on either an old chandelier or a similar frame. If you don’t have one, then you can take the simplest wooden or metal rim. If such material is not available, then, as an option, you can take thick wire and make about 2-3 skeins, so that a circle is formed.
- Cut out butterflies from paper according to the template. You need to take the butterfly template and adjust it to the desired size. The option also looks very unusual when butterflies of several sizes are located on the chandelier (again, depending on desire). Transfer the outlines onto paper and carefully cut out, preferably with a sharp edge stationery knife, or small, non-rounded scissors. For the templates themselves, it is better to use a material that is dense, does not become very dirty and does not attract dust. For example, velvet paper is very poorly suited for the product, because in the future you will need to vacuum the chandelier quite often.
- Take a nylon thread or transparent fishing line and attach the butterflies to it. There are two types of fastening: either piercing the bodies of the butterflies, or gluing them with silicone glue.

- dense threads, such as wool, cotton, or jute rope– at least 1 meter;
- cartridge;
- petrolatum;
- PVA glue;
- a brush for applying glue and Vaseline (it is advisable that the brush does not fade);
- 1 or 2 pieces balloons(the first in order to work with it, and the second in order to check the finished product, if desired);
Process of creation:
- Inflate the balloon to a certain size and secure it. Remember that the finished work will exactly follow the outline of the ball! Using a marker, draw a couple of circles at the top and bottom in order to determine the boundaries of thread winding.
- Using a brush, coat the entire perimeter of the ball with Vaseline.
- Pour PVA into a plastic container and thoroughly process the threads with it (It is not advisable to apply glue to the entire length of the threads at once! Process them as you wind them around the ball!).
- Taking into account the boundaries that you drew with a marker, wind the threads around the ball. Do not forget that the future depends on the density with which you wind appearance products.
- After wrapping, you need to leave the product for a day until it is completely dry; After complete drying, you need to burst the ball and remove it through the holes.
- Cut a spot in the top and insert the cartridge.
- To be completely sure that the product is strong, you can insert a balloon into it and inflate it. In a similar way, you can check the flexibility and reliability of the lampshade.
Alternatively, you can paint the structure with a spray can or acrylic paint, attach all kinds of decorative ornaments, such as butterflies, artificial flowers or beads. Also, a great idea would be to arrange several balls in the form of a bunch of grapes and fasten them together.
Wine bottle chandelier
This version of the chandelier is a little more complex than the previous ones. Making a chandelier this way is quite difficult; the manufacturing process will require care and attention. However, you will like the result!

- wine bottle;
- glass cutter;
- sandpaper for sanding edges;
- cartridge;
- electrical wire;
- metal or wooden frame, rim.

Lamp with butterflies
For work we will need:
- white thin cardboard
- thin twine or fishing line
- glue gun
- wire for frame
- utility knife or scissors
- round pliers
Advice! Before you start work, decide on the dimensions of the lampshade in finished form. In our example, the diameter is 30 cm, which means we need a piece of cardboard 90 cm long.
- We make a frame. Cut a piece of wire 96-98 cm long. Roll the wire into a circle with a diameter of 30 cm and secure the ends with pliers.
- We cut 3 hanging elements from twine or fishing line. We measure the length of the pieces based on the height at which you plan to hang the lamp. We tie them to the wire in three places, evenly distributing the load.
- Draw butterflies on cardboard different sizes and cut them out.
- We fold the cardboard, glue the joint with a strip of thick paper or staple it with a stapler.
- We fix the upper part on the wire. For this you can use both glue and thin wire.
- The places of joints and cuts can be decorated with butterflies remaining after cutting.

If you ask our grandmothers, they will certainly remember floor lamps with lampshades in the form of an inverted bucket, tied with colored threads. We can do exactly the same thing with our own hands.
We will need:
- frame for lampshade – 2 pcs.
- decorative braid (3 colors, choose a combination to your liking)
- scissors
- crochet hook
Let's start manufacturing.
- We tie the first braid to the lower ring of the lampshade, leaving a tail of at least 5 cm.
- Pull it onto the top ring with outside, throw it over it and pull it through inner side bottom ring. We alternate actions until the next sector of the frame begins.
- We fasten the first braid and take a braid of a different color to work. We knit it to the next sector, not forgetting to leave a tail on the first knot.
- We do the same with the third sector, filling it with the remaining braid.
- We stretch the tails along the bottom of the lampshade using a crochet hook.
Now our lampshade from the distant 60s is ready, all that remains is to insert the socket and assemble the chandelier in any order.
Fringed braid
Another one original idea for a lampshade with your own hands, it is also connected with braid, but not single-layer, but with fringe. What do we need for this?
Prepare:
- two metal hoops or an embroidery hoop
- fringed braid
- fishing line
- acrylic paint, the same color as the braid
- glue gun
- scissors
Advice! Fringed braid can be purchased in stores that sell decor for curtains and furniture.
- We paint the hoops or hoops with acrylic paint. If they are already covered with varnish or other paint, it is better to sand and clean them.
- We wait until the paint is completely dry and make three marks on each ring of the lampshade, placing them at an equal distance from each other.
- I cut three identical pieces of fishing line.
- We tie them to the smaller ring of the lampshade, leaving the upper ends with a margin so that we can then tie them to the lamp cord.
- We measure the length of the fringe, subtract 2 cm from it, and tie the fishing line to the second ring using the resulting length. This way we can get a cascade.
- Heat the glue gun and carefully glue the braid along the bottom ring.
- We do the same with the upper ring, pulling it out from the lower one.
Advice! Please note that the hot glue may melt the line, so be careful not to apply it directly to the line. Drop glue onto the paper, let it cool a little, and then apply it to the fishing line.
