Chalk board - Let's make a fashion trend with our own hands! Creative chalkboard drawing wall How to paint a drawing board

It is very easy to make such a wall in an ordinary apartment. There is now a special one on sale slate paint, which creates a matte surface for chalk drawing.

Perhaps the most common is from famous brand“Tikkurila”. Available in black and dark green, 1 liter capacity. The cost is about 900-1000 rubles per jar.

Similar paints are also produced by the brands “Rust Oleum”, “Krylon”, “Benjamin Moore”. I'm sure you can easily find one of these options at your nearest large building materials store. Such paints are called “chalkboard paint” or “chalkboard paint”

The paint is applied in 2 layers to a thoroughly cleaned surface, after which you need to wait for it to dry completely (follow the instructions on the package). As a result, you get a beautiful matte finish that looks great on its own, and with some imagination, you can create a real work of art covering an entire wall, which will become the main accent of your interior.

The surface covered with slate paint is not scratched when drawing with crayons; it can be wiped with a soft damp cloth.

These are the options for using slate paint that I especially liked:

Kitchen chalk wall

Write down a shopping list or a recipe you like, leave a message to your loved ones and wish them a good day - a slate wall is very relevant in the kitchen.

If desired, you can apply slate paint even to the surface of the refrigerator or kitchen cabinets:

If you don't want to use a whole wall for chalk drawing, you can paint only part of the wall, a column, or use a mobile board, which is also easy to do yourself:

Slate wall behind the desk

This coating is very relevant for. It will be appreciated by students and schoolchildren, creative people and simply anyone who wants to be able to have important information before their eyes.

Another one great idea– use slate paint to create diaries and panels for notes.

Why not? This is perhaps the easiest way to regularly make changes to your interior. Change the patterns and colors and you'll sleep in a different bedroom every week.

Wall for drawing with crayons in the nursery

And, of course, the most grateful users of the slate wall will be children! It may not be very practical, but having such a wall in the house will constantly develop your little one's creativity and make his life much more exciting. It is advisable that the remaining colors remain light so that the room does not turn out to be too gloomy.

To create an original gallery, you can combine drawings and captions with blank frames, photographs and posters. I also wrote about how to beautifully and evenly hang paintings and photos on the wall.

I hope you have some new ideas for creating a creative slate wall in your home.

slate wall And chalk board have long and staunchly occupied their niche in residential and public interiors . ABOUT different options I described the execution of this painting in a previous article. I would like to tell you today how to do it yourself chalk board or properly cover the wall, furniture slate paint. After all, something that is created with your own hands reflects a part of your personality and energy. Such a gift is much nicer than a purchased one, and in general, what is sold does not always match the color and shape intended.

Option 1. Chalkboard paint from manufacturers.

There are several companies represented on the Belarusian and Russian markets that produce special slate paint: Tikkurila, Rust-oleum, Marat Ka, Siberia. Rust-oleum and Siberia are leaders in quality. The price issue is of course higher than the rest. They differ, firstly, in that they use marble chips instead of cement. It lays down more softly and is considered more pleasant to the touch. Secondly, it appears in several dark places at once color solutions, which expands the boundaries in decoration. From my experience I will add about Finnish Tikkurila. I use it myself and am completely satisfied. Affordable price and proper quality. But the choice is yours.
In addition to slate paint, you will need a primer and a brush with hard bristles, like for gouache. Initially, the surface is cleaned of grease and dirt. If necessary, the area is sanded and rubbed. Next, a primer is applied. After drying (it is advisable to wait a few hours) – chalk paint. It is worth noting that glass can be coated without pre-treatment or base.

Option 2. Homemade paint.

For those who want to do absolutely everything with their own hands, not excluding the consistency of the solution, there is another way. You will need any glass for it acrylic or latex dark paint, 2 tablespoons of powder for grouting tile joints, a wide and hard brush, primer. The paint and grout are mixed well so that there are no lumps and applied in several layers to a cleaned, primed and dried surface.

Option 3. Adhesive film imitating slate/marker coating.

The creation method is very simple. It will require chalk film, the surface you want to cover, a paper cutter or scissors and your pens. It is important that the surface is perfectly clean. Otherwise, you will encounter inaccuracies, roughness, and the film will lie unevenly. Applied with a regular sticker as on decor items, furniture, and on the vertical parts of the premises. You can also purchase marker film instead of chalk film. Accordingly, you can draw and write with a felt-tip pen.

How to choose chalk.

Chalk is different, those who are worried about dust can let go of this moment. Today there is big choice special colored crayons intended for drawing on a slate board. They do not crumble and are thicker in consistency than regular school ones. Not bad a budget option offers Ikea.

The chalkboard has long ceased to be an exclusively school attribute. It has rapidly burst into home and office interiors, and has recently successfully conquered the interiors of cafes, pastry shops and restaurants. Today, any establishment that even slightly claims to be fashionable must acquire its own slate. As usual, there are two options: buy ready-made, but then there is a high risk that it will not be the right size or even color, or make it the way you want, yourself. How to easily and quickly make a chalk board from the most different materials with my own hands, I’ll tell you below.

Why is it needed?

Such useful thing in any household it can be useful for thousands of different reasons:

  • it is very convenient to write about any temporary promotions (coffee to go, discounts only today, promotion of the day, etc.),
  • this is an excellent planner for the next week or month: all tasks are visible from afar and always in sight;
  • at home it's great way keep children busy with drawing, practice writing letters, teach foreign language or dictionary words, because notes are always before your eyes and information is remembered much faster;
  • it can become a real art object if you master chalk lettering a little yourself or order its beautiful design from a specialist.

Here are some examples beautiful design for inspiration.

What materials will be needed?

I will dwell on this issue in detail, because it is the most difficult in the entire manufacturing process. First of all, because you can take almost any materials, but the result will be different. Now some details.

In order to make a chalk board, you need three things:

  1. base for painting,
  2. special paint,
  3. frame of suitable size with suspension.

We take a ready-made frame, if available, or order it from a framing workshop. If you need a standard format like 70x50 or 30x40, then it’s cheaper to buy a ready-made one at any large construction hypermarket (Ikea, Obi, Leroy Merlin and the like). But in a baguette there will be a richer choice and it is possible to make the desired size with an accuracy of 5 mm.
By the way, the finished frame can be decorated so that it fits exactly into the interior. You can read more about this.

Base for painting

The most interesting thing is that it can be almost anything:

  1. plywood,
  2. binding cardboard with a thickness of 1.2 mm.,
  3. a metal sheet.

We turned into slate boards all these materials and they behaved excellently during further use.
You can do without such a base altogether and just paint a piece of the wall in the room. The wall must be plastered and well primed. If you paint the wall, you won’t even need a frame.
Let's say that what you need is a board. How to choose a material?
I will briefly write about the advantages and disadvantages of each.

light in weight, usually a sheet of cardboard can be 70x100 cm in size. Convenient to use, easy to find on sale, can be cut to size if desired the right size with an ordinary breadboard knife. The most interesting thing is that the paint lays on it evenly, forming a thin film on the surface, after which the cardboard itself no longer resists water, so you can erase the chalk from it using a regular damp cloth. Disadvantages of cardboard:

  • limited size,
  • without a solid back in the center on large formats it can bend like a bubble, but on 30x40 this will not happen yet, so for small sizes he's practically perfect.

Plywood
- good environmentally friendly material, suitable for large formats, it will not lead anywhere even at a size of 1.5x1.5m. It is convenient to mount it on the wall. The fasteners can be recessed and the place where the sheet is attached to the wall can be leveled with putty. In general, everything is good with one exception:
- plywood does not provide a perfectly smooth and even surface. After painting, the wood structure is visible in some places. In principle, this does not interfere with drawing, but it is not suitable for perfectionists.
A metal sheet It is used in cases where you want to make the board also magnetic, but you have already purchased regular paint, without magnetic primer. The paint adheres well to metal, there are no problems with this, but thin metal can also bend at large sizes.
Chipboard and fibreboard give a perfectly smooth surface after painting. The impressive dimensions of the sheets allow you to approach the matter on a grand scale, without limiting yourself to the modest 50x60 or 70x100. The fastening points on the chipboard can also be easily masked with putty. It is more problematic to do this on fiberboard, but with some skill it is possible. A significant disadvantage of chipboard is its heavy weight. Fiberboard does not have such a drawback, which makes this material the most convenient of all the above.

Choosing paint

First we need to decide what kind of slate board we will make with our own hands: regular or magnetic. For the regular one, you just need chalkboard paint. For magnetic you need either:
- magnetic primer, with which the base is first coated, and then chalk paint is applied on top of it,
- magnetic chalk paint, in which both metal particles and paint are mixed at once.
The latter is more convenient, since you do not have to wait separately for the soil to dry, but it costs more than the usual one. For example, Tikkurila Magnetic costs 2950 rubles. for 0.5l. (all prices in the article are indicated for February 2017) Separately, magnetic soil can be obtained at a price of 1150 rubles. for 0.5 liters, but then subsequently you will have to add the cost of paint to it.

If the board does not have magnetic properties, then all that remains is to choose which “slate” paint to buy. Interestingly, the price range for it varies greatly depending on the manufacturer and the form of release. Firstly, in the form of a spray (for example, Krylon Chalkboard Paint) it always costs several times more than what is sold in a can, so it is not at all profitable, except for those cases when you need to paint a small board and fiddle with a brush or you really don’t feel like using a roller. For all other cases, choose a can, a wide brush and a roller.

The most expensive among all manufacturers is Tikkurila. Most likely due to the promotion of the brand itself. It will cost approximately 1100r. for 1 liter regular black, about 1300 rubles. – colorizable. Yes, yes, a chalk board can be made not only in traditional black, but also in any other color: mint green, dark blue, purple, and so on. As long as it fits into the interior and is dark enough for the chalk itself to be visible.
Chalkboard paint Russian manufacturer Siberia will cost less – 990 rubles. per liter, both colorized and ready-made colors, and their color palette is quite wide (black, blue, green, brown and dark gray). Siberia has only one drawback - if Tikkurila in the regions can be found in any large hardware store, then Siberia will have to be ordered from Moscow or St. Petersburg. Both are of excellent quality.
There are several other manufacturers in approximately the same price range, but I have never worked with them and can’t give you any advice on quality.

You don’t have to buy paint for chalkboards at all, but make it yourself, mixing black acrylic paint With a small amount baby powder, talcum powder or something similar, finely dispersed. It will turn out to be quite a budget option for home use. We made our first board exactly this way, and it served us faithfully until we tried industrial paint. Having appreciated its coating, we also repainted the first board with industrial paint. And the surface became smoother and more even, so writing on it with chalk immediately became much more pleasant. An example of a “homemade” coating is in the photo below. On the right side there is a close-up view to show the “banding”.

Brief master class

After a long conversation about materials, it was finally time to make the board itself. I tell and show how we made a 152x152 cm plywood board.
1. Take a sheet of plywood and use sandpaper or a sander to smooth out everything that seems uneven.
2. We mount the sheet on the wall in several places using self-tapping screws.

3. Use putty to mask the installation sites. After drying, sand off the excess putty.

4. Prime the surface twice.
5. Use a roller to paint the surface with chalk paint. We wait for it to dry and paint again.

All is ready! All that remains is to dress it up in a baguette to give it a more finished look and hide lateral surface leaf.

We put the remaining paint to good use: we paint all the small cardboards in the house that we can get our hands on. After drying, we insert it into a frame, and we get wonderful souvenirs that you can give to friends or leave at home for notes.

Like this in a simple way You can decorate your home or office interior, diversify it with chalk lettering and add a little more coziness to the environment.
Happy creativity and beautiful chalk boards!

After chalk paint became popular in interior design, you can find it in many homes. various elements, - from signs to entire walls - on which you can write with chalk. In this post we will tell you how to make a chalkboard a beautiful decorative element, and not just a place for notes and children's creativity.

What to write

The answer to this question seems obvious - chalk, of course! However, the manufacturers showed imagination: in addition to chalk different sizes and colors there are chalk pencils, chalk markers and even chalk paints. The choice of tools is very important for the final result.

The marker is ideal for small inscriptions and thin, clear lines, but the inscriptions are obtained without the characteristic chalk texture. It is more convenient and pleasant to hold in your hands. If you buy one, keep in mind that not all markers erase equally well - it's better to experiment on a less noticeable area.

You can make your own chalk paint by rubbing regular chalk on a fine grater and mixing the resulting powder with sanitary hand gel to the consistency of syrup. The paint is indispensable for painting stencils and large areas.

Ordinary crayons can also be made more pleasant: a variety of crayons holders, which are now very easy to find and buy, will not leave your fingers dry.

What to depict

On the slate surface you can simply draw, improvise, write down your thoughts and recipes, or leave messages for your household. However, such creativity may look careless and not serve the benefit of the interior. Cafes often become the standard for slate wall design - the walls in modern establishments are painted with beautiful fonts in different combinations and supplemented with drawings.

It is almost impossible for a person without special education and experience to make beautiful lettering on a board by hand, so just find a blank on the Internet or create your own composition from different fonts in your favorite graphics editor. We will tell you further how to transfer this artistic splendor to a wall or board.

Method 1. Stencil

This method fits better only for large inscriptions or repeating elements. You can print the stencil on thick paper and cut it yourself, buy ready-made ones, or order production from a printing house. The advantage of the last two is the possibility of reusable use.

To stencil your design, use chalk paint or markers. The advantage of chalk over regular paint The point is that if it doesn’t work out the first time, it’s okay, just wash off the area and redo it. The borders can also be corrected with a damp cotton swab.

Method 2. Carbon paper

This method is a little more difficult to implement, but it opens up more possibilities, because producing a large number of stencils is expensive. You will need a printed message or image, tape, graphite, a pencil, and fine chalk or chalk marker.

The technology is as follows:

  • shade the back side of a sheet of paper with graphite (you can replace it with chalk, but it will stain the surrounding surface more);
  • turn the sheet over and stick it with tape to the slate surface;
  • trace the image with a pencil, pressing firmly;
  • peel off the sheet - the outline of the image will remain on the surface;
  • carefully outline and paint over it with chalk;
  • Correct sloppy areas with a wet cotton swab.
