Taking into account the values ​​obtained after measurements, it is possible to develop drawings according to which gates will be manufactured that will not create additional problems. Usually the opening is reinforced with a frame, which reduces the size of the frame of the doors.

In order for the shutters of the structures to move freely and smoothly, a gap of over 10 millimeters is selected between the gate frame and the frame, optimal size— 20 millimeters, as in the photo.

The drawing contains stiffening ribs indicating the dimensions between them. Depending on the design, these values ​​may change: when installing additional horizontal ribs; increasing the size of the structure as a whole.

Advice: If the canvas is not made from a solid sheet, but consists of several pieces, vertical stiffeners should be installed at the joints on the canvas.

A special feature of the drawing of a gate for swinging garage doors is the presence of a pocket for a mortise lock and ears for fastenings padlock. The dimensions in the drawing are chosen for the passage of an adult man with an average height of 1.75 meters. The distance from the bottom of the gate to the locks changes when the number of locks in the drawing changes.

The dimensions of the pocket itself, for attaching a mortise lock, depend on the dimensions of the lock. The gaps on each side are selected within a range of up to 3 centimeters on each side of the lock.

  1. for axial drive - from 35 to 45 centimeters;
  2. for a chain gear – from 24 to 36 centimeters.
  • Choosing the size of the ceiling. For overhead gates it should be from 25 to 30 centimeters. If the ceiling size is less than 11 centimeters, to install a ceiling drive, it should be increased by lowering the opening by installing a profile pipe or wooden beam. The materials for the frame, frame and guide rails of overhead gates are usually metal, but stainless steel is the best choice. The box can be made of thick wooden beams or metal corners. The rollers themselves, springs and the entire lever-joint mechanism are usually purchased already in finished form. They are selected according to the dimensions of the guides. The remaining parts can be easily made yourself using welding machine and Bulgarian.

To manufacture the gate and install it in the garage opening, you will need the following tools:

  • welding machine;
  • grinder with cutting circles for metal;
  • drill with drill bits required diameter;
  • screwdriver;
  • hammer;
  • level;
  • tape measure, pencil.

For fastening, you need to use metal anchors or dowel screws suitable for the given weight of the structure. If you plan to use anchor bolts to fasten a metal corner, then you need to prepare a set of appropriate wrenches.

Installation

Before you install the lifting gate system yourself, you need to make sure that the opening on which they are installed has a perfectly flat surface: strictly vertical and horizontal levels, right angles. The carrier box is the most important power element such gates, so you need to be as careful as possible in its manufacture.

If a metal corner is chosen for the box, then the width of its shelf should be 1.5 times the thickness of the sash. After all the parts are measured and cut, they are attached to the garage opening with anchor bolts and tightened securely. To make a box, you can choose wooden beams with cross-sectional dimensions of 100x50 mm, which must be secured with 100 mm self-tapping screws.

One-piece frame folding gates must be assembled on a flat horizontal surface. After the metal profiles are cut to the required length, they are checked with a square and lightly tacked by welding. Next, check the right angles and dimensions again, including diagonally, attach the corner gussets and transverse stiffeners, then completely weld the structure.

After welding the frame, it must be cleaned with a grinder at the joints to remove burrs. Then it is coated with an anti-corrosion solution and painted. Inside metal profiles boards with thermal insulation are sewn in, and the outside is covered with sheet metal. Brackets with movable rollers are attached to the upper corners of the frame.

After this, guides for the future sash are attached to the ceiling. They should also be mounted as level as possible, double-checking the horizontal level, parallelism and perpendicularity to the doorway. Then the sash is temporarily installed in the opening in order to mark the location where the lever-spring mechanism is attached.

After the operation of the gate and the unhindered movement of the leaf along the guides have been checked, it is removed, the springs are installed, and they are adjusted. Lastly, a rubber seal is attached to the frame around the perimeter to seal the seams and softly close, install door lock and opening handle.

With careful and correct installation, as well as reliable protection from moisture, gates with a similar design can last for decades. And their repair can be limited only to lubrication of the moving parts of the mechanism, lever system, support rollers and replacement rubber seal. For prevention, lubrication can be carried out every season, and the outer rubber gasket can be lubricated with silicone before the onset of cold weather to protect against freezing.

For internal thermal insulation of such gates, you can use various materials, which are also used for wall insulation: mineral wool, polystyrene foam or expanded polystyrene. The last two are more effective, since they do not shrink over time, but they can be fire hazardous, so it is better to choose non-flammable types.

Having received a finished frame as a result of welding, it must be checked “in situ” in order, if necessary, to immediately make adjustments.



Garage door leaves are also manufactured starting from a frame, the structure of which is determined based on the material with which the leaves will be sheathed.

If the sashes will be sheathed with sheet steel, then it is necessary to reinforced frame, using for its base a profile pipe with dimensions of 20x40 mm, with a wall thickness of 2 mm, no less.

When preparing for installation of the frame of the doors, it is necessary to take into account that the dimensions of the doors must have the necessary gaps, from 5 mm to 10 mm, between their edges and the inner surface of the gate frame.

The finished doors are inserted into the garage door opening, aligned proportionally and firmly fixed. Next, using the welding method, the gate hinges are mounted, which, as a rule, are turned according to the manufacturing method, and have a bearing in their design. The dimensions of the loops usually do not exceed 20x120 mm.

During the installation process, it is necessary to carefully monitor compliance with all dimensions, which must exactly correspond to those indicated in the diagram. In this case, the correct formation of corner joints is checked using a square.

After installing the frame, which has been carried out in compliance with all the previously specified requirements, you can begin welding, upon completion of which the resulting seams should be thoroughly sanded.

Doors

In accordance with standard circuit swing gates are placed inside the frame structure, each of which is made in the form of a separate frame, which is subsequently covered with a solid metal sheet. For their manufacture, as a rule, the same profile is used as in the preparation of the common frame. Installation of the sashes is carried out in the order indicated below:

  1. First, the frame elements are slightly “grabbed” together for welding.
  2. After this, the shutters are roughly installed inside the frame, laid on a rigid and level base.
  3. If necessary, the dimensions of the sashes are adjusted (taking into account technological gaps relative to the main frame).
  4. Upon completion of the sizing, the workpieces are finally welded into a frame, which is then covered with sheets of iron 2–3 mm thick (using the same welding).

At the final stage of installation work, hinged hinges are welded to the gate in pre-designated locations. In this case, the lower fixed (supporting) part of the hinge is mounted on the frame itself, and the upper movable part is welded to the frame of the sashes.

Conventional bolts mounted in the upper and lower parts of the gates can be used as internal gate locks.

Painting and insulation of the structure

How to make a garage door with your own hands - step by step process

Welding the supporting frame

  6. The prepared elements are tacked together in several places.
  7. Then fitting is carried out on site, discrepancies are corrected with hammer blows, and the joints are completely welded.
  8. Using the same corner, the second frame is assembled in the same way.
  9. On the slopes of the opening, both parts are secured with metal pins 15 - 18 cm.
  10. The protruding parts of the rods are scalded and cleaned flush with the surface.
  11. To connect the frames, metal strips are used, welded at intervals of 50 - 60 cm.

We cook the gate leaves

The basis of the doors is a frame assembled from profile pipes. When cutting workpieces, it should be taken into account that for free opening, a gap of 1 - 2 cm must be left between it and the frame. The pipes are laid out on a flat surface. After checking the corners and horizontal alignment, they are grabbed. Fitting is done, if there are no flaws, the second frame is welded. If both sashes are positioned correctly in the frame, the seams are completely welded.

To strengthen the structure, stiffeners are installed. Their number depends on the size and weight of the sashes, but at least two according to the height of the frame. Sheathing

Both the appearance and functionality of the gate depend on the quality of this operation. Therefore, the work must be done carefully in the following order:

  1. First, a sheet of metal is cut out for the left sash of such a size that it overlaps the right side by 2 cm.
  2. Then it is grabbed to the frame.
  3. Sheet for right side cut taking into account the overlap so that it does not reach 2 cm to the side edge of the sash.
  4. To prevent the sash from moving, the casing is spot welded. When applying continuous seams, the frame pipes are attached to the channels with clamps. Welding is carried out alternately on both sides in sections of 10 cm.

Welding hinges

The bottom goes to the supporting frame, and the top goes to the sashes. To strengthen the fastening, curved metal strips (5 - 7 mm) are used. They are applied to the top of the hinges and frame. The reliability of the hinges is increased with the help of internal inserts made of thin reinforcing rods. The welds are cleaned so that they do not interfere with closing.

Installation of locks and latches

Most often, hinged or mortise locks. However, they are unreliable because they have problems opening in winter. Therefore, constant lubrication and protection from moisture in the form of a visor are required. Models with cylinder mechanisms. Experienced motorists recommend installing a lever lock. To increase security, the gates are locked from the inside with a deadbolt and pin stoppers. But then you will need a gate in the sash or wall.

Gate painting

This operation is necessary to protect the metal from corrosion. The coverage is updated once every 2 years. The work is performed in several stages:

  1. After cleaning the surface, degreasing is carried out with any solvent.
  2. Then a primer with an anti-corrosion function is applied.
  3. To avoid drips, it is better to apply the paint with a spray gun or roller.

We insulate the gates

For laying insulation on inside the sash is attached wooden sheathing, which is filled with polystyrene, mineral or glass wool. For regions with a temperate climate, a layer 5 cm thick is sufficient, for northern regions - 10 - 15 cm. When laying, you need to ensure that all gaps are filled. After installation, the insulation is covered with plywood or clapboard. Finally, the gaps between the frame and the slopes are sealed with polyurethane foam.

You won’t be able to make a garage door yourself, since the metal components weigh a lot. Therefore, you need to resolve the issue with an assistant in advance. But you can equip swing gates with automatic opening and alarm systems alone, if you have knowledge and experience in this area.
