Do-it-yourself arched door: making. How to make an arch instead of a door - options and instructions for construction from plasterboard Making an arched structure

Often the interior passage in an apartment is not closed with a door, but left open. This allows you to elegantly unite the space and make the interior design of the rooms more elegant. To do this, you can purchase a ready-made structure from assembled elements or cut out individual parts with your own hands and then assemble everything into doorway. But how to make an arch yourself so that it looks smooth and beautiful? After all, there are a lot of materials and technologies for installation; you need to choose wisely.

Designer arch

What arches can be installed in an apartment?

Installation arched design in place of an interior door can be done without involving professional builders. You just need to choose the type of arch and materials for its manufacture. Following the step-by-step instructions below will help you avoid mistakes and make an arch with your own hands.

Arch curves can be the most bizarre

Design features and significant differences

In construction, arched structures are supports for overlying elements of walls and structures. But in apartments, doorways to the corridor and between rooms are not load-bearing. In the first case, construction materials are selected based on serious external loads, and in the second they must support only their own weight along with the finishing.

Arch with bar counter

An apartment door arch, installed instead of a door, is an element of interior design. Its frame can be made from a lightweight profile for gypsum boards or bars with a cross-section of 20–30 mm. This design can easily withstand the weight of finishing materials. You just need to firmly fix it on the walls so that the decor does not warp or fall off after a couple of weeks.

Reference! In private houses and city apartments, an open door arch between rooms serves exclusively decorative functions. Bearing loads in this case are placed on concrete walls on the side or a lintel above the opening.

Shapes of arched openings and their capabilities

Device options interior arches There are many in form:

  • "Classic".
  • "Romance".
  • "Modern".
  • "Ellipse".
  • "Trapezoid".
  • "Portal".

The most popular types of interior arches

The first option at the top has the shape of a regular semicircle, and the last one has strict rectangular outlines throughout its entire height. The rest are intermediate versions between them. But other variations are also possible with one side “support” or two curved posts.

Form door arch and its design are chosen to match the design style of the room. This takes into account the height of the ceiling, the size of the opening and the features of the premises on both sides. They will look perfect in some homes classic shapes with a regular bend in the form of a semicircle, and in others - a rectangular portal. This is more a matter of the taste of the home owners and the general style of interior decor. Some people even prefer cone-shaped contours.

  • It is recommended to choose the classic option only when high ceilings in the area of 3 meters and above.
  • In typical panel high-rise buildings, it is better to design the entrance to the kitchen with a “MODERN” arch.
  • For a wide doorway from the hall to the corridor, “ROMANTIC” with large wide racks is more suitable.
  • The rectangular “PORTAL” looks best in an interior where clear horizontal and vertical lines predominate in the decoration. Similar option doorway design is ideal for houses made of timber or logs. In such a home, its rectangular corners will look elegant and fit the theme as much as possible.

Classic in the interior

What to build a designer doorway from with your own hands

To quickly make an arch in the doorway of an apartment, it is enough to purchase a set of prefabricated elements made of plastic or laminated chipboard lumber. They need to be trimmed the desired height, and then secure it in the places specified according to the instructions. But such options are standard and quite expensive. Plus, not every opening can be fitted with a ready-made model with the required dimensions.

Components interior arch system

To make panels of arched posts and arches you will need one of the following materials:

  • drywall;
  • plywood;

Advice! It is better to choose plasterboard sheets for covering the frame. GCR can be finished in the future big amount various materials. However, thin plywood is much easier to bend.

Finished veneered arch

The frame for an interior arch can be made:

Brick decoration is ideal for connecting a balcony

You can also make an arch instead of a door from concrete, brick or aerated concrete blocks, and only then decorate them with one or another finishing material. But these options are more for those who like capitalism and solidity. Plus they weigh a lot, in old apartments apartment buildings It is impossible to build anything from them.

The use of metal is limited not only by its weight, but also by its high cost. Manufacturing of metal structures complex shape at home - this is a very difficult project to implement in practice. The easiest way to do it yourself is to work with drywall and its profile.

Step-by-step instructions for self-installation

The photos and recommendations below will allow even a novice master to cope with the improvement of a doorway. To do this, you first need to create a frame, and then sheathe it and decorate it. You can do everything yourself, you just need to do everything consistently and without errors.

Scheme of a plasterboard arch

Preparing the doorway

  1. First, the leaf and frame of the existing door (if it exists and is in place) are dismantled.
  2. Then the opening is expanded to the planned dimensions.
  3. There is no need to plaster the cut walls under the frame; they will still be covered with sheathing. It is enough to straighten them and remove everything that can fall off (plaster, pieces of concrete, falling bricks). The main thing is that the supporting profile can be secured securely and in a strictly vertical position without tilting.
  4. If you are planning a backlit design, then you need to install the wiring in advance.
  5. Measurements are always taken at several points in the opening so as not to miscalculate the dimensions.
  6. If the walls are uneven, then the thickness of the racks (depth of the arch) is selected according to the thickest point.
  7. To simplify marking and cutting sheet material To cover the arched frame, you need to make a life-size template from cardboard. This will allow you to avoid mistakes and preview how the contours of the structure being formed will look.

Important point! The upper part of the arch takes about 10–15 cm away from the height of the doorway. At least 20 cm should remain from it to the ceiling. When calculating and marking, these numbers must be taken into account.

Fastening the guides

Creating a load-bearing frame

  1. To make a frame for an arch, you first need to create a main contour from a profile around the perimeter of the opening, fixing it to the walls.
  2. Then the upper curved part of the frame system will be attached to it. Sometimes only a curved element is made on top, but this is only possible with perfectly smooth slopes.
  3. Vertical guides in the doorway are attached with an indentation from the plane of the interior wall by the thickness of the plasterboard sheet plus 2 mm for subsequent plaster on top of it.
  4. After plastering you should have a single, flat surface.
  5. On each side and at the top of the arch being created, you will need to secure two such profiles parallel to each other.

Advice! If the walls are made of wood, then self-tapping screws are sufficient to attach the guides, but in the case of concrete or brick, dowel screws will be required. The spacing between fasteners should not exceed 30 cm.

If the columns of the arch are made of small thickness, then two arches can be easily replaced with a wide profile. All cutting and bending manipulations in this case are carried out according to a similar pattern. However, transverse installation will no longer be necessary. When using wooden blocks instead of a profile, the frame for the arch is made using a similar technology. Only the original carrier material changes frame structure.

Two folding methods plasterboard sheet

Rough sheathing of the frame

After completing the assembly of the arch frame, all that remains is to mount the gypsum board or wood board. To give plywood or fiberboard the desired shape, they will have to be pre-moistened, fixed on a template and steamed with a hot iron.

Ideally, you need to use special arched plasterboard, reinforced on both sides with non-woven fiberglass. It is enough to stretch it in the longitudinal direction and give it the required form.

There are two ways to bend a regular plasterboard sheet: wet and dry.

  • Wet technology involves soaking the back side of the plasterboard with water and gradually bending it onto a template of the required shape and fixing it on it. This process is lengthy; haste can lead to rupture of the cardboard layer of the sheet. And the resulting part can be installed and secured with self-tapping screws on the arch frame only after the plaster has completely dried.

Advice! It is possible to speed up the process of moistening gypsum board to give it elasticity using a needle roller.

  • The dry method involves making parallel cuts on one side of the sheet, which affect the plaster and the upper outer layer of cardboard. But the front cardboard layer remains intact. The bend is smooth and of the correct shape.

Installation of the main element of the arch

Cutting sheet material is best done with a jigsaw. When using a hacksaw, the cutting edges will certainly be less even. The sheathing is fastened with self-tapping screws in increments of 5–6 cm. After fixing it, the edges of the plasterboard and plywood sheets. And then a special plastic corner with perforation is attached to the curved edge to protect it from chips.

GKL fastening

Putty for perfect surface leveling

The next stage of finishing a plasterboard arch is primer and putty. After applying the first one, you need to wait until it dries. And for reinforcing the second layer it is used fiberglass mesh. The corners are also reinforced and leveled using a mesh.

The edges must be smooth

Surface putty

Putty joint with wall

Mesh reinforcement

Edge reinforcement with mesh

Next apply the third finishing layer. The putty, which has hardened after 10-2 hours, is sanded with sandpaper to remove excess and make the surface as smooth as possible. There should be no protruding screw heads or dents left on it.

This is what the arch should look like

Decoration of the structure and design techniques

You can finally decorate the arch in the apartment with your own hands and make it beautiful:

  • painting in color with the walls;
  • wood paneling or plastic panels;
  • wallpapering or veneering;
  • finishing with decorative stone on a gypsum base;
  • decoration with mosaics and mirrors;
  • decorating using stucco or ready-made columns.

Simple finish with backlight

Materials in finishing Interior arches are used both natural and artificial. The choice here depends on the overall design idea for the interior design of the apartment. To improve the doorway, you can use polyurethane stucco and even textiles. All options are acceptable, the main thing is that they are in harmony with the surrounding decor.

Shelves in the design of an arched passage to the corridor

The frame of columns made of clinker or decorative stone. Personal installation It will take time and diligence, but the result will definitely please the master. The uniqueness of the apartment with this method of decoration is guaranteed.

Artificial stone decor

Arch finishing natural wood will bring solidity and grace to the house, and the mosaic pattern invented by the owners will make the decor unique. The main thing is not to overdo it with the design, making the design a tasteless heap of elements. different styles. All interior details should be in harmony with each other and complement each other.

Stucco columns in an arched doorway with wide walls

Often conventionally painted white or Brown color It’s quite enough to complete the design, making the arch with your own hands beautiful and elegant. However, some require built-in lighting and additional decorative elements in accordance with the style chosen for the apartment. It will take more time to finish the arched opening, but it will be worth it.

Decor with corner and wallpaper

It’s not difficult to install and decorate an interior arch instead of a door yourself. For work, it is enough to have metal scissors, a screwdriver and a hacksaw in the house. But if you have no experience in handling these tools, it is better to trust professional installers.

Arched doors are a decorative element that has long been used in interior design and is characterized by wave-like popularity. If in the ΧVΙΙ- ΧVΙΙΙ centuries they were used to decorate the royal courts and princely chambers, as well as the houses of other noble persons, then subsequently their popularity decreased somewhat and reached its maximum development only in the 50s in Britain and the USA, where for some time they were an integral element of the interior. Over the past 50 years, their popularity has subsided again and has begun to increase today as modern designers have proposed replacing standard rectangular doorways with arched designs that add grandeur and sophistication to any space. However, the relevance of this topic is due not only to the recently increased popularity of arched structures, which instantly create a subtle hint of classics and antiquity in the room and reflect the quality and sophistication of the room, but also by the fact that the choice of interior doors is one of the important stages in creating a design project and decoration interior Design trends tend to change, but some decorative elements remain unchanged. Such elements include interior doors, which are not only decorative element interior, but also perform a protective function. Due to the fact that in modern design angular high-tech and sophisticated classicism coexist harmoniously, one of the representatives of which are interior arched doors, it is necessary to talk in more detail about the features of the selection and installation of these structures.

Arched doors: main features

If we consider arched doors standard design from a functionality point of view, they are practically no different from common ones swing doors traditional form. Based on the name, you can understand that the main distinctive feature arched design is the shape of the door leaf and the top crossbar of the door frame, which are curved in an arc, which is their main advantage. First of all, it is necessary to note the attractive appearance. Concerning technical advantages then arched doors by and large can't boast about them. The only advantages you need to pay attention to are the following:

  • If the ceilings have a light shade, arched doors help increase the height of the room. Otherwise, they only emphasize their low level. The meaning lies in the play of light and shadow, intensifying or weakening depending on the shape of the arched opening;
  • Installation of interior arched doors - good decision for those who are tall. If the height of a traditional door leaf does not exceed 2 m, then the height of arched doors increases due to the upper arc, which allows you not to bend over in the opening.

As mentioned earlier, arched doors were used to decorate royal chambers in Rus'. The production of this structure was trusted only to experienced carpenters, and its design was trusted to the most talented artisans. Despite the fact that in the 19th century arched structures were finally replaced by rectangular ones, which are the most common today, they were not completely forgotten modern designers and architects. Thanks to the presence of a restrained and laconic design, modern arched doorways are noticeably different from their ancient counterparts, but the technology for their production, as before, remains more complex and time-consuming. Due to the fact that the arch is characterized by a rounded shape of the upper part, this entails a lower location of the upper door hinges, which, as a result, must be distinguished by impressive reliability and power. These features of arched structures entail an increase in the cost of their installation, which is one of the disadvantages of arched doors.

Varieties of arched doorways and arched doors

First of all, let's consider the classification of arched doorways, which includes the following varieties:

Semicircular arches are the most popular designs and include the following subtypes:

  • Semicircular or classic arched openings characterized by a perfectly smooth radial shape;
  • Ellipsoidal arched openings , made in the shape of a semicircular oval;
  • Arched openings in Art Nouveau style characterized by intricate shapes and many decorative protrusions;
  • Arched openings in the romanticism style the shape most closely resembles a rectangle with rounded edges;

Horseshoe arched openings in most cases they have the shape of a horseshoe, but they can be not only in the form of a smooth semicircle, but also a rounded figure, smoothly elongated upward and somewhat pointed. Using similar arched openings appropriate in the case of decorating premises in national styles;

Gothic or the so-called pointed arches, characterized by an elongated, pointed shape, devoid of smooth transitions.

Types of arched doors

Arched doors, like arched openings, are also classified according to many characteristics, including material of manufacture, installation location, and design features. Let us consider these classifications in more detail.

Varieties of arched doors, depending on the installation location, are divided into two main categories:

  • Arched interior doors located inside residential or public premises. Wood is often used for their manufacture, and they are characterized by the presence of glazing, for which stained glass compositions are often used;
  • Entrance arched doors, which are installed at the entrance to shopping and entertainment centers, shops and other organizations. A plastic profile is used for their manufacture.

Taking into account the design features, installation complexity and cost of the finished product, the following types of arched structures are distinguished:

  • Door leaves that follow the contour of an arched opening . Their production takes much longer compared to standard door leaves, and therefore their cost still remains quite high. Wood is used for their manufacture, since arched structures made of plastic are made using a different technology;
  • Standard rectangular panels , above which it is fixed arched part . Due to the fact that the arched part for such doors is mounted separately, they are much cheaper. By choosing door leaves of this type, you get the opportunity to use not only swing, but also sliding structures;

Important! Due to the design features, the height of the opening for such canvases should be quite high, and is calculated by the formula: In ex. = 210 cm + ½ opening width.

In addition, in accordance with the design features, the following types of arched doors are distinguished:

  • Single doors in most cases they are used as interior designs, as well as entrance doors for public buildings;
  • Double doors , the use of which is most appropriate for wide doorways. In most cases, one sash is fixed in the opening using latches, and the second, the width of which is twice the width of the fixed sash, remains operational.

Materials for the manufacture of arched structures

Due to the fact that arched doors can be made from a large number of materials, amateurs non-standard interiors They will always be able to choose an interior arched door that will suit not only their stylistic preferences, but also their budget. Since the production of arched interior doors requires more materials than the production of standard door structures, this cannot but affect the cost of the door leaves.

Chic, but one of the most expensive designs are arched doors made of solid oak.

This type of wood is characterized not only by its external splendor, which cannot go unnoticed, but also by its durable, wear-resistant material. Due to the fact that arched doors made from solid oak are considered elite products, most often they are made only to order. On the one hand, thanks to this you can show maximum imagination when choosing the decorative design of the arched structure, and on the other hand, this cannot but affect the cost.

Important! If you still prefer doors made of oak, you must be confident in the strength of the material used to install the walls in which the arched opening is made, which in some cases requires reinforcement. In addition, it is important to carefully select door hinges, which must be characterized by high strength and wear resistance. As for the installation of arched doors made of solid oak, although you will have to overpay, it is better to entrust it to specialists. Otherwise, if you prefer self-installation, this can lead not only to inconvenience in subsequent operation, but also to damage to the door leaf.

No less elegant, however, and cheaper are arched doors made of pine, beech or ash.

They are environmentally friendly, and in addition to being aesthetically pleasing appearance, bring into the house a favorable atmosphere created by natural wood. Decorative design similar designs are represented by figured carving or forging, and to give even more decorative effect Manufacturers decorate wooden arched structures with multi-colored stained glass inserts. When light hits them, the room is filled with colorful reflections, creating a truly magical atmosphere.

Arched doors made of plastic based aluminum profile

However, arched structures are made not only from natural wood. Recently, due to their low cost, arched structures made of plastic based on an aluminum profile have become widespread. One of the main advantages of this design is its lightness, which not only allows you to avoid reinforcing doorways and using massive hinges, but also creates an airy atmosphere, making the room more spacious. Taking into account the fact that manufacturers have recently been paying attention not only to the functional, but also to the decorative characteristics of plastic doors, paying attention not only to color, but also to texture, often giving them a resemblance to natural wood, stone or metal, it is not difficult to imagine how diverse there may be similar arched structures.

Styles that match arched doors

Due to the variety of stylistic incarnations, arched doors are rightfully considered universal decorative tool, successfully used by designers in a variety of stylistic directions. Let's look at the main ones.

  • Classic style. This interior concept can be successfully complemented by arched structures, the distinctive feature of which is the laconicism of stylistic solutions. For their manufacture, solid wood, MDF or chipboard can be used;
  • East style with its luxury, exoticism and sophistication, can be successfully emphasized by pointed arched structures made of dark wood;
  • Shabby chic- an interior concept, the highlight of which is a barely noticeable patina of time, which is artificially created by designers thanks to special decorative techniques. And in order to create a complete atmosphere of comfort and tranquility, you can complement the room with arched structures, stylized as antique;
  • Country- a stylistic solution that combines most favorably with horseshoe-shaped arched structures made of light wood and devoid of even the slightest hint of cladding or varnishing. The atmosphere of security and peace, characteristic of the country style, will be complemented by the heaviness and proud simplicity of the door designs.

Installation of arched doors: preparation of materials and tools

Installing doors with your own hands is an event that, one way or another, was carried out by every master. Despite the fact that installing arched doors is a more labor-intensive task, if you follow the sequence of actions recommended by experts, you can install the arched structure yourself.

Important! To make your task easier, take the advice of experts who recommend making door frame to order, entrusting this matter to specialists, and door leaf do it yourself. By following this advice, you will both make your task easier and save a significant amount of money.

First of all, prepare everything necessary materials and tools. To correctly install an arched door, you will need:

  • A jigsaw equipped with wood files;
  • Electric milling machine with two types of cutters: cylindrical and disk (designed for grooves);
  • Sanding machine with sandpaper of various grain sizes. In this case, it is better to use tape;
  • Boards whose thickness is 5 cm;
  • Wooden wedges;
  • Two small bars and 4 wood screws, the length of which should be 30 mm greater than the thickness of the bars;
  • Waterproof wood glue that can be replaced with PVA glue.

How to make a blank for the arched part of the door leaf?

In order to make the arched part of the door leaf, it is necessary to measure the final width of the opening. To do this, you need to subtract the thickness of the box part and the thickness of the gap between the door and the opening, equal to 2 mm, from the width of the doorway.

To ensure the beauty of the arched structure, it is necessary to mount it so that its radius is equal to half the width of the doorway. Taking into account the width of the prepared boards, you need to calculate their number. The arrangement of the boards is horizontal.

Important! To make an arch, it is necessary to use carefully dried boards, since otherwise, failure to comply with these requirements may lead to curvature of the arch.

Using an electric router and a disk-slot cutter, it is necessary to make grooves that will ensure a tight connection of the structure. The grooves must be made in such a way that the protruding part is about half the thickness of the board, which is 2.5 mm. We do the same with the internal groove.

The surface of the grooves is cleaned of dust and wood glue is applied, after which the boards are joined and left until completely dry;

Important! To ensure stronger gluing, take a board and, using self-tapping screws, attach the bars to it so that the distance between the bars is 10-20 mm wider than the glued workpiece. The workpiece must be placed between the bars and spread apart with wedges.

How to cut a semicircle from a blank?

To do this, you can go in two ways:

  • If the arch has an even semicircular shape, the middle must be marked at the bottom of the workpiece. Then you need to take a pencil and tie a thread to it, the length of which is equal to the radius of the arch. One end of the thread is applied to the mark on the workpiece and a semicircle is drawn with a pencil;
  • If the future arch is characterized by an elongated semicircular or pointed shape, it is necessary to use another method. To outline the boundaries of the bend contour, experts recommend using a long metal ruler. In a similar way, make a mark in the middle, from where a vertical line is drawn along the length of the radius of the arch. Next, the ruler is turned over on its edge, bent so that one of its edges touches the radius mark, and the other coincides with the edge of the workpiece. Next, draw a line with a pencil. The opposite side does the same.

Next, using a jigsaw, you need to cut the workpiece in accordance with the markings. Having done this, take grinding machine with the coarsest sandpaper and treat the surface of the arched part of the door structure on both sides. Subsequently, using a finer abrasive, repeat the sanding.

Manufacturing of door leaf

Important! To extend the service life of the door leaf, it is necessary to provide horizontally oriented boards in its lower part.

Upon completion of all work, you should get a door leaf consisting of 3 parts:

  • Horizontal crossbar located at the bottom of the door leaf;
  • A door panel made of vertically arranged boards;
  • Upper arched part.

Having made three main parts, connect them using the tenon method. To do this, you will need a router with which you can carry out everything necessary operations, then place them on glue. Don't forget to support the canvas with wedges.

Finally, treat the finished canvas with a protective agent and finishing coat. If the door is located on sunny side, experts do not recommend finishing it laminated coating, replacing it with traditional colorless varnish for exterior use.

The topic of this article is the manufacture of arched doors, their installation and the intricacies of these processes. We will talk about the types of doors with arches, note their varieties and the features of each type. We will also give recommendations on self-production entrance door in the form of an arch made of solid wood.

Today, arched openings of various shapes and styles are used in the construction and decoration of most premises. They are used as entrance and interior doors.

Types of arched openings

From the variety of doorways in the form of arches, the following classification can be made:

  • Semicircular arches. They are the most common and are also divided into subtypes:
    • Classic (semicircular) - they have a smooth radial shape.
    • Ellipsoidal - made in the shape of an elongated oval.
    • Modern - have intricate shapes with various protrusions.
    • Romantic - shaped more like a rectangle, with the upper edges slightly rounded.
  • Horseshoe arches. They are shaped like a horseshoe. They can have not only a smooth semicircle, but also an elongated, pointed top. Most often, openings of this type are used to decorate premises in national styles.
  • Gothic (pointed) arches. These structures have an elongated, pointed shape, without smooth transitions.

What types of arched doors are there?

Arched doors have many varieties and are classified according to various factors: installation location, material of manufacture, design features

Types of arched doors at installation site

There are two main categories here:

  1. Interior doors arched - located inside residential and other types of premises. Most often they are made of wood and have glazing. Stained glass compositions are often used for glazing such structures.
  2. Entrance doors in the form of arches - used mainly in entrance groups ah establishments: shops, organizations, shopping and entertainment centers. Made from plastic profile.

What are arched doors made of?

Due to the complexity of manufacturing this type of door leaf, the variety of material for their production is not very abundant:

  1. Plastic. This material serves for the production of profiles, from which they are made not only entrance doors, but also windows.
  2. Solid wood. Wooden door leaves in the shape of arches are used for entrance areas in the private sector, as well as inside any type of premises.

Structural features of arched doors

Based on the characteristics of operation, the complexity of installation and the cost of the finished product, the following arched door structures can be distinguished:

  • Canvases that repeat the contours of the opening one to one. The peculiarity of such doors is that their production takes a long time. They stand quite high. Such models are made of wood, as they are arched plastic doors made using a different technology.
  • Standard canvases with an arched part fixed above them. Such doors are somewhat cheaper, since their arched part is mounted separately and does not open together with the door leaf. It also becomes possible to use not only hinged, but also sliding versions of the canvases.

Important! The opening height for such doors should be large enough. It is calculated by the formula: Vpr = 210 cm + half the width of the opening.

  • Single doors. They are usually used as interior and entrance options for private houses and public spaces.
  • Double doors. For wide openings it is advisable to use two sashes. One of them can be fixed in the opening using a latch. Relevant for entrance groups. In this case, more often than not, the “working” part of the door is 2 times wider than the fixed part.

Making an arched door yourself

Despite the difficulty of making such canvases, it is possible. Now you can see for yourself. You and I will learn how to make wooden arched entrance doors.

It is better to order the box part according to your dimensions, and we will make the canvas ourselves.

We prepare everything you need

First you need to prepare tools, boards and available materials. We will need:

  • Jigsaw with wood saws.
  • Electric milling machine with two types of cutters: disk (for grooves) and cylindrical.
  • Sanding machine with sandpaper of different grain sizes. The best one is tape.
  • Boards, 5 centimeters thick.
  • Wooden wedges.
  • Two small blocks and 4 wood screws. The length of the screws should be 30mm greater than the thickness of the bars.
  • Carpenter's waterproof glue. PVA is possible.

Making a blank for the arched part of the canvas

To make the arched part of the door leaf, we first need to measure the final width of the opening. That is, from the total width we subtract the thickness of the “box” part and a 2mm gap between the door and the opening (frame).

After this we do the following work:

Important! Before making an arched door, you need to select well-dried boards. Since if they are damp, the canvas will warp over time.

  • Now, using an electric router, we make grooves for a tighter connection. To do this, we take a disk-slot cutter. We make the grooves in such a way that the protruding part is about half the thickness of the board. That is, 2.5 millimeters. The same goes for the internal groove.
  • Next, we clean the entire surface of the grooves from dust and apply wood glue to them. After this, we connect all the boards and leave them to dry.

Important! In order for gluing to occur better, you need to take a board and attach pre-prepared bars to it with self-tapping screws. The distance between the bars should be 10–20 mm greater than the width of the glued workpiece. Place the workpiece between the bars and spread it apart with wedges.

Cut out a semicircle from the blank

For this operation, we recall the installation experience plasterboard arches. We use one of two options to outline the arched shape:

  1. If the arch has an even semicircle. Mark the middle at the bottom of the workpiece. Then we take a pencil and tie a non-stringent thread to it. Cut the thread exactly to the length of the arch radius. Apply one end of the thread to the mark and draw a semicircle with a pencil.
  2. If the shape of the arch (as in the photo) has an elongated semicircular or pointed shape, then we use a different method. To outline the boundaries of the bend contour it is very convenient to use a long metal ruler. We also make a mark in the middle and draw a line from it strictly vertically to the length of the radius of the arch. Next, we place the ruler on the edge and bend it so that one edge touches the radius mark, and the other coincides with the edge of the workpiece. After this, draw a line with a pencil. On the second side we follow the same steps.

Important! Make sure you get a symmetrical arched neckline.

Next, take a jigsaw and carefully cut the workpiece according to the markings. After this, we take a grinding machine with the coarsest sandpaper and process the surface of our arched part of the door on both sides. After this, we repeat grinding with a finer abrasive.

Now the most beautiful part of our door is ready. Interior doors arched type can be decorated with the same elements. However, it is worth considering that for interior spaces glazed arches will be more elegant. And their manufacture requires carpentry skills.

Finishing the door leaf

Now we have to make the rest of the door. It will be assembled according to the same principle as previous part. The only difference will be that the boards will not be positioned horizontally, but vertically.

You should also provide a horizontal part at the very bottom of the canvas. This will help extend the life of the door.

As a result, our door leaf will consist of 3 parts:

  1. Horizontal bottom cross member.
  2. Shield made of vertical boards.
  3. Upper cross member. It is also the arched part.

After all 3 parts of the door are ready, we connect them using the tenon method. To do this, we use a milling cutter to perform the appropriate operations and place all 3 parts on glue. Don't forget to support the canvas with wedges.

The final stage is treating the entire surface of the door with a protective agent and finishing coat. Pinotex or any other wood protection is suitable for this.

If the door will always be on the sunny side, it is not recommended to cover it with laminating coatings. In this case, it is better to use ordinary colorless varnish for exterior use.

Nowadays, interior arches instead of doors have become very popular. They give the room extravagance and elegance, help free up space in small apartments, which the doors occupied when opening. They are installed between adjacent rooms, in the hallway or in the kitchen. Can .

The arch can have different configurations and be made of different materials. They are usually made of plasterboard. It is suitable for installation and bends well.

Preparing for work

Before making an arch instead of a door, you need to measure the opening, plan a specific shape for the arch and calculate its dimensions. It is necessary to measure the width of the door opening and its height from the floor. Moreover, it is necessary to take into account that the arch will reduce the opening by about 10-15 cm. If the height is less than 2 m, then it is better not to make an arch, but to decorate the opening with decorative details made of foam plastic.

The width of the arch will be equal to the distance between the side walls of the opening. Measure the opening and divide the distance in half. This value is necessary to make a correct semicircle. Before installing the arch, you need to find out what shape it will be.

You can install a semicircular arched structure made of plasterboard. When planning installation, you need to find out whether the walls are vertical and level enough. This is necessary for the design to be correct. If the walls of the door opening are not level enough, then their surface must be leveled with putty.

Materials and tools:

  • drywall;
  • stand profile;
  • dowels;
  • screws;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • roller with needles;
  • arch corner with holes;
  • latex putty.

First, the front parts of the arch are performed. You need to pick up 2 pieces of drywall. The measurement and cutting of pieces is carried out uniquely for all materials.

An even semicircle can be done in two ways.

  1. First way. It can be made using rope if it does not stretch. This rope must be tied to a simple pencil. Then mark the middle of the semicircle, more precisely, its radius. For this, the value that was obtained by measuring the opening width is used.

If the opening width is 1 m, then the radius of the semicircle will be 50 cm. From the edge of the plasterboard sheet, where the top of the arched structure is located, you need to measure 60 cm and draw a straight line. This value was obtained by the following calculations:

50 cm + 10 cm = 60 cm.

10 cm is the distance from the top of the opening to the top point of the arched structure.

Then the plasterboard sheet is cut to fit the width of the opening (100 cm). Then the middle is marked on the drawn segment. To do this, measure 50 cm from the edge. We got a point for drawing a semicircle.

You need to take a pencil with a string, measure 0.5 m, and draw a semicircle from the resulting point. This is how a kind of compass was made. If everything was done correctly, then the semicircle should be even.

Then electric jigsaw or use a bladed knife to cut out a semicircle. Thus, a rectangle with a semicircle was obtained. The width of this rectangle is 100 cm, height 60 cm.

  1. Second way. First you need to prepare a soft baseboard. It is used to draw a semicircle on a sheet. Cut out a rectangle measuring 100x60 cm. Measure 50 cm from each edge and draw 2 lines. Place a mark where these lines connect.

Take a soft plinth and bend it on both sides. Thus, a semicircle is obtained. The most convex part of the semicircle should be flush with the mark. The edges of the semicircle should meet the edges of the rectangle. Draw an arc and cut it out. It is better to do the work together with an assistant.

How to make a frame

To complete the frame, you need a profile prepared earlier. The frame will be made of guides.

First you need to attach two guide profiles along the width of the opening (1000 mm). They will be installed on both sides of the opening. They are fixed with dowel screws if the walls are concrete. If the walls are made of wood, then you need to use self-tapping screws.

In order for the arch to be flush with the wall, its frame must be installed 11-12 mm deep into the opening. After installing drywall and puttying, the plane will be level.

Then, on both sides of the opening, 2 side parts of the frame, 600 mm long, are installed and fixed. To do this, you need to cut off the bottom of the profile at an angle. If this is not done, then this part of the profile will be noticeable, due to the fact that the arch at the bottom narrows.

The manufacture of the main part of the frame is completed. Next, the front arched elements are installed on it. The work is done with metal screws.

If you want to make an arch of a more complex shape, then you need to make an appropriate frame for it. Next, you will need to close the end part of the arched structure. For this purpose, it is necessary to make a frame on which the bent strip will be installed. This frame must be made from a 27x28 mm profile.

The work is performed with metal scissors, which have a spring mechanism. In order for the profile to have the shape of an arc, you need to cut it accordingly: 2 of its 3 sides. The profile has a U-shape. It is necessary to turn the profile clockwise to the side, then it will be located inside the installed right part of the arch.

The second profile is fixed in the same way opposite it. Then cuts are made along the middle and upper parts of the profile every 40 mm. This creates a kind of snake of the required length. It is installed along the edge of the semicircle. The steeper the bend, the more often the cuts need to be made.

When renovating apartments, when a decision is made to remove doors, widen a doorway or build a partition, most of us advocate the installation of arches, which look more modern and attractive than standard rectangular openings. This architectural solution visually expands the room without installing doors. As a rule, openings with a round outline have several main types:

    the arc of the arch has the correct radius - classic version;

    the arc of the arch is made with a rise (modern style);

    the arch of the arch has a straight part in the center with rounded corners the required radius;

    the arc of the arch is made in the form of a regular or irregular ellipse.

The last two types are best suited to wide openings. Below we will look at the installation features various types interior arches on a frame made of profiles.

The simplest and most common option is installing a frame in an existing doorway . This type of construction suits those customers who do not plan to cover the walls with plasterboard, but would like to have an arch.

    The installation of the frame should begin only after the completion of plastering and putty work, i.e. when the doorway is completely ready for further finishing. In this case, its inner part should have a flat, smooth surface.

    Next, in the upper part of the opening we fix straight vertical and horizontal guide ceiling profiles (PNP profiles 28x27), and the dowel-nails should be placed at a distance of 200-300 mm from each other, and holes for them should be drilled at an angle deep into the wall so as not to damage its edges. Dowel-nails must be located in the corners and at the ends of the profiles.

It is important that the guide profiles are positioned strictly parallel to the partition. It should be taken into account that the profiles must be recessed into the opening to the thickness of the plasterboard sheet, i.e. by 13 mm.

    Then we cut out two identical parts from a sheet of drywall that will form the profile of the arch. These parts should fit freely into the doorway, forming a gap of 7 mm with the wall. We temporarily fix one of the parts on the wall with two self-tapping screws. From the PP profile we cut pieces of the required length, focusing on the temporarily fixed part, so that they do not extend beyond its edge. Each such segment requires two copies.

Don’t forget to mark the installation locations of the PP profiles so as not to get confused. After this, we remove the plasterboard part, and fasten the prepared sections with self-tapping screws, first to one PNP profile, then to another.

Aligning the “snake” with the edge of the plasterboard sheet, we mark on it with a marker the location of the profiles, and on sections of PP profiles, the depth to which the “snake” will move. We cut off the excess. In addition, we trim the last segment of the “snake” adjacent to the sides of the doorway. We perform the same operation with the second “snake”.

When filling the arch, do not forget to protect the corners with a corner profile.

The outlined frame design for an arched opening can also be used with simultaneous continuous cladding of walls with plasterboard using the Perlfix mixture . In this case, the width of the frame must be determined by the width of the wall, i.e. flush with the wall.

Arrangement of an arched opening in frame partition from plasterboard we do it as follows.

    The facing of the partition begins with the doorway. In this case, whole sheets must be used - this is a guarantee against the formation of cracks. It takes two people to work.

We apply a sheet of drywall to the partition frame so that the doorway is located approximately in the middle of the sheet. Then we move it to one side so that the edge of the sheet falls in the middle of the rack profile. We measure the sheet in length so that its free end also falls on the rack profile, and cut off the excess.

We lift the sheet to the ceiling and, leaving a gap of 5 mm, begin to fix it in this position with self-tapping screws. Having screwed in 2-3 self-tapping screws, we continue to attach the sheet to the rack profile. Ultimately, this plasterboard sheet must be fixed to the frame with self-tapping screws with a pitch of no more than 250 mm.

    We measure the width of the doorway and mark the center line on the surface of the plasterboard sheet (the width of the opening divided by 2). From the top point of the opening, measure the same half of the opening width, making a mark on the center line. We have obtained the center of the circle for the arch.

If such an arch radius is not suitable for some reason, for example, if the doorway is wide enough, it can be increased by lowering the center of the circle down along the center line. Accordingly, the arched vault will end up being less steep.

If you need to obtain a specific arch profile, it is recommended to first accurately calculate all the radii and their connections, then cut out a template, and using the template, mark the contours of the desired arched opening on fixed sheets of drywall.

So, draw a line along the contour of the arch and carefully saw off the extra fragment along this marking.

In the same way, we fix a sheet of drywall on the other side of the partition, make markings and saw off the excess.

    The next stage will be to strengthen the arched opening and give rigidity to the structure. For this we need wooden plank 50x70 mm, from which a number of bars (at least five) should be cut corresponding to the width of the opening. the length of each bar is equal to the distance between the sheets of drywall inside the partition. Having evenly distributed the bars along the radius of the arc, we fix the sheets of drywall onto them with self-tapping screws.

    We cut out a strip of the required width and length from drywall, moisten it with a spray bottle and, placing it in a “bridge” on two supports (you can use bricks, boxes, cans, etc.), place a small weight in the middle. After some time, the strip will bend under the weight of the load, and it can be fixed to the bars with self-tapping screws even when wet.

    Next, we fix strips of plasterboard onto the side rack profiles with self-tapping screws, the width being equal to the thickness of the partition, and the length from the edge of the strip to the floor. Don’t forget to strengthen the arched opening with a corner profile.
