Why drywall is not the best choice for walls: comparing alternatives

It’s rare that a redevelopment can be done without erecting new partitions, unless you decide to make a studio and are just tearing down the old walls. New walls can be built from piece materials, such as bricks, slabs and blocks of various compositions - we have already talked about them in the article “From brick to glass blocks: what to build from interior partitions" Or use sheet materials. There are three most popular today, and we are ready to tell you about all their pros, cons and features so that you can choose the best one.

1. Plasterboard sheet (GKL)

A plasterboard sheet is a layer of gypsum wrapped in thick paper, measuring 1200x2500x12.5 mm and weighing 29 kg. It can also be thinner - 9 mm wide, but this option is very fragile. It is mounted like this: first, a frame is formed from metal profile, then plasterboard sheets are sewn onto the frame in two layers, overlapping on all sides. The final wall thickness will depend on the width of the metal profile used 50/65/75/100 and will be 100/115/125/150 mm, respectively. GCR is sheathed not only on walls, but also on ceilings.


Waterproof plasterboard sheets (GKLV) of green color are also sold, but they are conditionally waterproof: with constant exposure to water, such sheets will swell, even if they are covered with tiles on top. It is better not to use it in “wet” rooms at all.

GCR cost: 250-350 rubles/piece. GKLV will be more expensive.

  • It is convenient to lay communications inside the frame, which is sheathed with gypsum board.
  • Easy installation.
  • If you mount the frame on top of the floor screed, the plasterboard wall can be dismantled and rebuilt as needed.
  • Very light material, gives very little load on the floors.

2. Gypsum fiber sheet (GVL)

GVL also consists mainly of gypsum, but is reinforced with various environmental additives. The assortment includes PC sheets - with a straight edge, they are intended for walls, and FC - an edge with a recess (for the floor). There is also a GVLV (waterproof gypsum fiber sheet) in stock: it does not differ in color in any way, it only has a seal indicating moisture resistance.


Dimensions of the gypsum fiber sheet are 2500 x 1200 x 10/12.5 mm, weight 36/42 kg. More often, a thickness of 10 mm is used for interior partitions. The metal frame is sheathed with GVL sheets in one layer, unlike gypsum plasterboard. To improve sound insulation, you can make two layers, but then it is better to combine: one layer of gypsum fiber board, the other of gypsum plasterboard.

Cost: 450-500 rub./piece. The final wall is approximately the same in cost for gypsum plasterboard and gypsum board, since gypsum plasterboard is mounted in two layers, and gypsum board in one.

GKL itself is a non-flammable material. The only element exposed to flame is the cardboard lining of the sheet. Due to the fact that the flammable cardboard and the heat-resistant core are connected end-to-end, i.e. there is no between them air cushion, cardboard will not burn either - only charring of this layer of material is possible.

IMPORTANT! Any type of gypsum board is not flammable, but do not confuse ordinary heat-resistant gypsum board and fire-resistant gypsum board - a material reinforced with special additives. An ordinary sheet of drywall will begin to deteriorate from prolonged exposure to high temperatures as soon as the water contained in the gypsum (about 17%) finally evaporates.

Drywall sheet size

The standard sheet should be rectangular:

  • length - from 2,000 to 4,000 mm;
  • width - from 600 to 1,200 mm;
  • thickness - from 6.0 to 12.5 mm.

Each application area has its own sheet standards: thin arched gypsum boards are often produced in sizes 1,200/2,500/6 mm or 1,200/3,000/6 mm. A moisture-resistant sheet often has parameters of 1,200/2,500/12.5 mm (less often - with a thickness of 9 mm).

By generally accepted standards:

  1. the weight of 1 m² with a thickness of 6.5 mm is 5 kg;
  2. weight 1 m² thickness 9.5 mm − 7.5 kg;
  3. weight 1 m² thickness 12.5 mm − 9.5 kg.

UK (lat. - AK)

Longitudinal beveled edge. They are subject to puttying using reinforcing surface sealing tape. Sealing seams at the joints of such sheets is carried out in at least three stages - the process is quite time-consuming.

Modified beveled longitudinal edge with a slightly flattened shape (found only on Rigips plasterboard sheets). Joints are connected only with reinforcing tape

Semicircular longitudinal edge. Reduces the labor intensity of the seam sealing process. For this type of sheet it is also not necessary to use reinforcing tape. Filling the seams with high-strength putty is performed in 2 layers.

An analogue of the PRO edge from the Lafarge Gips companies, as well as the Polish branch of this company - Lafarge Nida Gips. The joints are connected only with reinforcing tape.

Slightly rounded longitudinal edge. This type of joint can be puttied without additional gluing of reinforcing tape.

One of the options for a semicircular beveled edge with a flattened shape, produced only on Rigips plasterboard sheets. The sheets can be joined using putty compound with or without reinforcing tape.

Folded longitudinal edge. This type of edge is mainly found only on gypsum fiber sheets. Reinforcement of the edge of the FC under plaster is done with paper tape (serpyanka).

Semi-circular, slightly beveled edge (alternative to HRK edge). To seal the seams, the joint is sealed with reinforcing tape and puttied. This version of the plasterboard edge allows the use of joint sealing technology for AK edges, as well as filling joints using HRK edge board technology.

In home repairs, sheets with beveled edges on the front side of the sheet are most often used - these are edges of the UK and SHTUK types.

IMPORTANT! When cutting slabs, a cut edge inevitably appears, and there is no protective layer of cardboard on the cut edge, so before processing the seams of such sheets, a chamfer is made on the edges with a plane or knife. Next, use the putty mass, covering the seam with reinforcing tape.

For quick leveling of vertical bases, the most preferable option is gypsum plasterboard slabs, but to perform the cladding, you need to choose the correct sheet size. The thickness of the drywall is determined based on the characteristics of the structure being created.

GCR is divided into categories depending on the functions and characteristics performed:

  1. Ordinary. It is used in residential premises, offices, service rooms. According to the standard, objects must have a constant positive temperature and humidity no more than 65%. A simple board consists of plaster, lined on both sides with cardboard. The products are gray in color and marked according to GOST.
  2. Moisture resistant. GKLV refers to special materials that are used for cladding walls and erecting partitions in rooms with high humidity. This is an excellent solution for a bathroom and shower room, hallway, loggia. Improving the quality of the material is achieved through additives in the composition. Additional components also increase resistance to fungus and mold. Impregnation of the outer coating helps neutralize the harmful effects of water, but the sheets are not able to maintain their structure during prolonged direct contact with liquid. The products have a greenish tint.
  3. Fire resistant. The material is used for cladding areas that experience constant temperature effects. The product is suitable for cladding areas prone to fire and evacuation corridors. Such properties are achieved by adding reinforcing fibers to the composition, which significantly strengthen the structure of the slab. But the integrity of GKLO upon contact with very high temperatures or an open flame is maintained for a short time (from 30 to 60 minutes). The exact values ​​are indicated on the labeling. The fire-resistant material is pink in color.
  4. GKLVO. A universal variety that combines high levels of moisture resistance and fire safety. Products are optimal solution for attic rooms and ventilation. The material has a green tint and red markings.
  5. Arched. A special type that bends well is used to create complex architectural forms.
