Unusual shapes and extraordinary ornaments can decorate any interior and give it unique features and personality. Regular hexagons of honeycombs have long attracted designers and artists, because this is truly amazing phenomenon nature, which can become an excellent basis for creativity. Today's master class will tell you how to make original wall shelves in the shape of a honeycomb with your own hands.

To make wall shelves in the shape of a honeycomb, you will need the following materials and tools:

  • boards 1-2 cm thick, 10 cm wide (it is better to calculate the length individually);
  • packaging of wood screws;
  • corner brackets and screws with dowels - for attaching shelves to the wall;
  • white paint on wood;
  • colored wood glaze (translucent paint) or decorative wax on water based;
  • paint trays, brushes or paint rollers;
  • electric drill and drills of the required diameters;
  • grinder or sandpaper;
  • construction tape;
  • ruler;

Step 1. To estimate how many shelves and what configuration you want to get, take a sheet of notebook and sketch out the desired design, taking into account the proportions of the wall and free space on her. Let it be individual hexagons scattered across the wall, or collected in groups - it’s up to you to decide.

Any size can be made. For example, take the edge length as a basis - 20 cm. Now count how many edges you have drawn, and multiply the number by your edge length - this is the total footage of the board you need to buy.

Step 2. If you have a reliable circular saw on your farm, start cutting the boards. In fact, it's easier to do preliminary calculations, then buy at a DIY hypermarket or specialized market necessary boards and ask them to cut them on the spot. The main thing you need to tell the sawing specialist is that the cuts of the boards should be at an angle of 30°!

Step 3. We fold the sawn parts. It is more convenient to do this on a flat floor. We fasten the honeycomb parts together by drilling holes to the diameter of our self-tapping screws, and only then screwing the self-tapping screws into them. If you do not first mark the holes and drill them, the boards may crack, because we screw the screws into the very edge of the boards. We assemble all the elements according to the intended design.

Step 4. We sand all surfaces well and move on to painting. In our version, all shelves are painted with translucent glaze (water-based decorative wax), and the ends are painted with white wood paint.

For painting, choose reliable paints that are safe for health. These must be materials for interior work water based. If the standard color of glaze or wax does not suit you, you can mix several colors of one yourself trademark. After mixing, make test paints on an unnecessary board and wait until it dries - this is the only way to evaluate the color that will turn out in the end. Carry out painting in compliance with the technology: apply the first layer of glaze with a brush or roller, and after 3-4 hours - the second.

Step 5. All that remains is to attach it to the resulting shelves metal corners, which will hold the shelves on the wall. Prepare holes in the wall, insert dowels into the holes, and then secure the shelves with screws. To prevent the metal corners from standing out against the background of the wall, paint them with the paint that was used to paint your wall, or just white paint to match the color of the ends of the shelves.

Making a wall shelf with your own hands

To estimate how many shelves and what configuration you want, take a sheet of notebook and sketch out the desired design. (And if there are any pieces left, you can make a shelf as a gift to a friend).

Let the “advanced” woodworkers start by cutting the wood circular saw, and we, according to tradition, will go to the store, where we will buy boards and immediately ask them to cut them to the sizes we need.

The main thing to tell the workshop is that you need 30° cuts! Do not forget.

Now put all the pieces together to check that everything fits together. Order? Let's go home to collect shelves.

At home we put the parts together again. It is more convenient to do this on a flat floor. We drill holes, and only then drive in the screws - otherwise the boards may crack. We assemble all the elements according to the intended design.

We sand all surfaces well and move on to painting. In the version in the photo, all the shelves are painted with azure, and the ends are painted with white enamel for wood.

  1. Regardless of whether you paint the shelves with glaze, enamel or other decorative coating, choose reliable paints that are safe for health. These must be materials for interior work; you don’t want to breathe harmful substances, do you?
  2. If the standard azure color does not suit you, you can mix several colors of the same brand yourself. True, you will have to do test paints on an unnecessary board and wait for it to dry.
  3. Apply the first layer of glaze with a brush or roller, and after 3-4 hours the second. It is also recommended to apply enamel in 2 layers. Bookshelves, like other furniture, can be varnished if desired: for furniture in the room we recommend Belinka Interier Lak.

Bookshelf in the form of a honeycomb is quite unique and interesting. In this instruction I will tell you how to make such a shelf yourself!

Step 1: Tools

We will need:

1. Wood (plywood). To make 6 cells like mine, you will need a piece of approximately 170 by 60 cm.
2. Miter saw, which can be used to saw off edges exactly 30 degrees.
3. Wide adhesive tape(masking tape)
4. Wood glue
5. Sandpaper
6. Paint or varnish

Step 2: Cut the plywood

I used 18mm plywood. The angle between the sides inside the hexagon cell should be 60 degrees, so I set the saw to 30 degrees.

The cells themselves can be any size you want, but it is better to make a drawing in advance and decide on the exact dimensions of the sides. My first pancake came out lumpy, or rather the first two. The cells were either too large or too deep. Final dimensions of each side: 15 cm deep, 19 cm long. The approximate diameter was about 39 cm.

Step 3: Putty

The quality of the plywood left much to be desired, but I wanted the outer surface of the shelves to shine and shine. To achieve the desired effect, you need to sand the surface. But this process can literally take days if you don't have a sander at hand. So I went the other way and treated the surface with wood filler/filler.

Step 4: Sanding

If you also follow my path and use putty, then the next step will be sanding sandpaper.

Step 5: Painting

First, on the sides that you will paint (I only painted the outside), you need to apply a layer of primer, let it dry, sand it, or apply another layer if necessary. You can repeat the process several times until you achieve smooth surface, which you will like.

After priming, you can start painting. I chose the gold color, in reality it looks much better and more impressive than in the photo. The feeling that there are gold bars in front of you.

Original hand-made honeycomb shelves will not only become a convenient rack for things dear to your heart, but also an interesting art object on the wall of your room. The modular structure of such shelves allows you to create interesting color and geometric compositions. For example, these shelves, if necessary, are inserted into one another and completely folded into one cell. You can change their location or add new cells, creating fancy pattern on the wall.

Honeycomb shelves can be not only wall-mounted, but also table-top and floor-mounted. Agree that making honeycomb shelves with your own hands is an exciting thing for home handyman, which gives scope for skill, imagination and real creativity! You can paint them, experiment with colors and sizes.

To make shelves with your own hands we need:

  • boards, level, tape measure, wood glue,
  • saw and miter cutter, screwdriver and screws,
  • brackets for mounting the shelf on the wall.

Prepare 15 boards cut along the edge at an angle of 30 degrees and 30 cm long along the long edge.

To make a hexagon, take 6 boards and assemble the first cell on the floor or a large workbench. At first, it will be like putting together a puzzle. Then things will go faster!

Start assembling the shelf with one board, gradually complementing it with the remaining sides. In order to fix the shelf cell, lubricate the ends of the boards with wood glue and press them firmly for a couple of seconds.

To securely fix the shelf geometry and safely hang it on the wall, additionally connect the base of your shelf with two screws and the sides of the shelf with one screw.

If you feel at home with the working tool, you can safely add a crossbar in the middle, simply by accurately measuring the size of the shelf at its widest part.

After assembling the shelf, carefully sand its surfaces and tint them with wood stain and furniture varnish. To hang the shelf on the wall, use ready-made brackets. Now in construction stores presented wide choose beautiful brackets, with curls, forged with decorative elements.
