The best monitors for computer work. Existing types of matrices. Choosing the best matrix type for a monitor

A monitor is one of the main components of a good computer. Why do we need powerful video cards if there is no way to adequately reproduce the video signal? A monitor is a device without which a personal computer will not function perfectly.

Society does not stand still; an increasing number of innovative technologies are developing and finding application in real life. Currently, the Russian market of computer components offers a huge number of monitors, which differ both in the type of screen, video adapter and interface cable, and in the size of the displayed image.

Parameters such as screen aspect ratio, screen size, viewing angle, and pixel response time also matter. No less important are the resolution, color depth, pixel size, and screen refresh rate.

There are people who sit near the computer for several hours a day. They can work or play. This is not particularly important, the main thing is that vision directly depends on the quality of the monitor. You should select this element carefully. Doctors recommend taking a break every 30 minutes. Look out the window, just close your eyes. Do some exercise for your eyes. The monitor also needs to be looked after. Monitors of various models are now available. How to choose a computer monitor that is inexpensive but good. Let's figure it out together.

What to pay attention to

If you go to buy a computer monitor, you should know what to look for first.

Diagonal and screen size

A lot depends on this characteristic. Inches are used to measure dimensions. On average, 19 inches, and the maximum is 30. However, the huge screen is not very convenient. There may not be enough space on the table for it. Although now they produce models that are mounted on the wall. You should know that if your computer monitor has a large diagonal (screen size), then you also need a lot of electricity. In addition, you will have to select the appropriate video card. So experts recommend choosing a 22 or 23-inch monitor.

Diagonal and aspect ratio are completely different things. Don't get confused. The thing is that the diagonal is the same, but the aspect ratio can change. The aspect ratio of the monitor screen can be classic or widescreen. The first type looks like a square, the ratio of these monitors is 5 to 4, sometimes 4 to 3. The second look like a rectangle, their ratio is 16/9, maybe 16/10. Pay attention to the photo:

Now there are almost no classic models left. If previously there were very few different programs for widescreen, now they are produced in large quantities.

If you are thinking about how to choose a good monitor for your computer, it is important to know what resolution is. There are points that go vertically and also horizontally. They are called pixels. Their number is the resolution. A computer monitor has a minimum and a maximum resolution. So what monitor resolution should you choose? It all depends on what you want to see on the screen. The larger the diagonal, the higher the resolution.

Let's take an example - a 15-inch monitor. It will have a resolution of 1024 by 768. If the monitor has a diagonal of 20 inches, then it will be 1600 by 1200.

But what if you are mainly going to play, how to choose the right one? It is best to purchase a computer screen with an aspect ratio of 16 by 9 and a resolution of 1980 by 1020.

Resolution options

Matrix selection

The matrix is made in several ways:

  1. The first one is called TN. This is the earliest matrix, it is also cheap, but its response is low. The viewing angle is very small. In addition, color rendition is quite poor. But the manufacturers made a special film to increase the viewing angle.
  2. IPS appeared not so long ago. It is considered a very expensive matrix. It has several varieties, such as UH-IPS.

The most expensive matrix for a computer monitor is considered MVA/PVA. Some manufacturers, trying to reduce the cost of this element, improve it, but the image quality deteriorates significantly.

Which matrix should I choose for my monitor? It all depends on what exactly you want to do on the computer:

  • TN is suitable for various office programs, surfing the Internet and various games. But it won’t be very good to watch movies, or work with photographs or color. This matrix will not work if you are an active user of Photoshop. It is better not to install professional programs.
  • IPS - you can watch movies, host professional programs, including Photoshop, but it is not suitable for games.
  • VA - you can watch movies, work with photos and professional programs, but again not suitable for games.

The higher the resolution on your monitor, the smoother the picture will be.

Response time

Response time is the amount of time on the monitor screen that it takes for the pixels to switch from white to black. If this time is long, then the plume will be visible. This characteristic should be small, then the picture will be more realistic. The response time of monitors varies greatly, but 5 ms is recommended.

Contrast

The higher the contrast, the better the midtones and blacks are displayed. This is very important when you work on a computer during the day. If the contrast is poor, then any light source will affect the image for the worse. A static contrast ratio of one thousand (white) to 1 (black) is recommended. Dynamic contrast is the name given to adjusting monitor lamps to certain parameters.

Let's give an example. Let's say you're watching a movie, and it's night. Then the monitor lamp will burn much darker and brighter. In this case, the scene will be very clearly visible, that is, the contrast has increased. If the system does not respond immediately, some tones will be visible. A dynamic contrast ratio of 10,000,000:1 is recommended.

In general, rarely do anyone pay attention to these numbers; they look mainly at static contrast.

Brightness

Screen brightness indicates how intense the screen glows. If the lighting in the apartment (office) is bright, then you need higher brightness. Otherwise, the image will not be very visible. The recommended brightness level is 300 cd/m2.

Screen surface

The screen surface is divided into matte or glossy. The first image transmits very well, but it is much easier to get dirty. Moreover, it most often glares if there is a light source somewhere nearby. With a matte surface, everything is completely opposite.

Connectors are communication ports that are needed to connect a computer with some device.

  • DVI - designed to transmit video information from a computer to a monitor. To ensure maximum transmission speed, monitor the cable length. It should not be more than one and a half meters. If it is longer, the signal will attenuate. If you really need to connect the cable over a long distance, connect amplifiers.

DVI connector and connection plug

  • HDMI - using this cable you can connect your computer to a media player or TV. It is divided into several varieties, each with its own characteristics. How to choose HDMI? Standard is the cheapest cable, High Speed is more expensive. Some cables support the Ethernet protocol. If you need it, then you purchase just such a cable. Pay attention to the signal transmission range. 1080p would be best

It is important to know that a quality cable will not be flexible, nor will it be thin. The contacts must be soldered very well, not by hand.

  • VGA is designed to allow video players to be connected to a TV or computer. But now this connector is gradually being replaced, and some manufacturers are planning to abandon it completely.

VGA monitor connector

You also need to see if there is a video camera, if there is a three-dimensional image. Pay attention to the speakers and touch buttons.

If you are still thinking about how to choose a monitor for your computer, first decide why it is specifically needed and where it will be located.

  • Home:

It is best to buy a home monitor with a diagonal of 19 inches, with a high resolution. It must have a TN matrix and must have several connector ports, including HDMI.

  • Office:

The monitor should have a good diagonal - 19 inches, preferably compact and not very expensive.

  • Designer:

If you choose a designer monitor, look at the matrix - it should be IPS.

  • Game:

If you are a gamer, then you need a 22-inch monitor. The response time must be fast, and various connectors are required. This is where dynamic contrast comes in.

The best monitor for gaming is Ostendo CRVD.

  • DELL U2412M and U2414H, as well as P2414H.
  • Samsung S22D300NY and S24D590PL
  • LG 29UM57
  • BenQ GL2450
  • Philips 223V5LSB
  • Acer K222HQLbd
  • Samsung
  • AOC i2757Fm

Video - Expert advice on choosing an inexpensive but good monitor for any user:

The monitor as a means of visually displaying information has existed for a long time and has experienced several revolutionary changes in its history. If not a few years ago manufacturers were mainly fighting for the ability to provide high basic picture characteristics, today the competition between different concepts for implementing this device is becoming fiercer. Modern types of monitors differ in many criteria, determining not only image quality, but also the availability of communication interfaces, energy saving indicators, functionality and other performance qualities.

What is the difference between a monitor and a TV?

At first glance, modern computer monitors are no different from televisions. At least, if you compare small models of similar size, you may not notice the difference. And yet it is there. So, if a classic TV is an autonomous device that receives and reproduces audio and video signals from cable and satellite stations, then a monitor processes and provides graphic information, the source of which is a special video card. As for external differences, they are most clearly expressed by the type of monitor on a laptop, which can be represented by one of the family matrices. In particular, TN, MVA and the most modern development - IPS matrix formats are common today. Compared to the same TVs, these modules provide higher quality and more detailed reflection of graphic information per unit of screen area.

for computer displays

The basic module, which is balanced in characteristics and therefore widely used, is TN. This system provides a good response time, averaging 20 ms, and has a low manufacturing cost. But due to modest color rendering indicators and low contrast, such matrices are not in demand among sophisticated connoisseurs of high-quality images. The best replacement for such devices are IPS and TFT modules - a type of monitor that has decent contrast, does not stand out and broadcasts optimal color reproduction at large viewing angles. But the TFT module in modern modifications is more expensive and requires higher power consumption.

Classification by type of information reflected

There are two fundamentally different concepts for displaying information on the screen in the form of an image. The alphanumeric system, which is implemented in displays that process a character or text signal, is considered classic. Among the latest varieties of this family, the so-called intelligent monitor, endowed with editing capabilities and pre-processing the received data, deserves attention. The second way of displaying information is graphic, which, in turn, is also divided into two groups. In particular, there are vector and raster types of monitors, which have their own characteristics. For example, the raster output model is designed specifically for computer equipment with the appropriate graphics subsystem. Vector displays are more often used in radars, slot machines and other equipment that does not require high-quality display of graphic data.

Classification by screen type

The oldest monitor today is a cathode ray tube monitor. These are CRT screens, which are practically no longer available for sale. LCD monitors can also be considered traditional and also obsolete. However, there are different types of LCD monitors that operate on liquid crystals. These are the same matrices that are used to equip laptops - the most modern ones include IPS and TN+film modules. In the general family of screens, the most progressive is LED technology, based on light-emitting diodes. Such monitor models provide high image quality and in some versions show good energy-saving capabilities. A technologically more advanced continuation of this concept is the OLED monitor, which uses an organic light-emitting diode.

Classification by interface

Nowadays, it makes sense to talk about two types of interfaces that are most widespread - analog VGA and the HDMI system, which, although not new, provides high quality transmission of “pictures” and sound. The VGA port is already the latest representative of analog interfaces. Compared to digital signal broadcast channels, it noticeably loses in quality, but is still used to maintain the usual functionality of the equipment in terms of connection. As for HDMI, it is, in fact, a DVI-D interface adapted for household appliances, also designed for processing multi-channel audio. Today, this connector can be equipped with any type of LCD monitor, as well as projectors and plasma panels. To implement a connection via this channel, you must use a passive DVI-D system adapter. It should be borne in mind that not all analog outputs even theoretically allow the possibility of connecting via HDMI and using an adapter.

Classification by video adapter type

Any monitor needs an input signal processing system. This function with further translation is performed by video adapters that allow several connection configurations. In particular, some video cards require PCI or AGP connectors, which provide high efficiency and flexibility. Another connection option is a group of graphics core chips that are built into the board. This solution is cheaper and does not involve any hassle during use, but is inferior to the previous option in terms of the same efficiency and performance. Modern types of computer monitors are most often equipped with a full-fledged integrated video adapter. This option is even cheaper, but, again, does not allow you to maximize the potential of the input signal.

Classification by type of coating

There are two types of coatings for monitors - matte and glossy. The first option is good because it does not allow the incident light to be reflected, but at the same time it is characterized by lower color rendering rates. Glossy models, on the contrary, provide a more saturated and bright image, but due to the reflection of glare they can cause inconvenience in terms of visual perception. When evaluating these types of monitors, you should not forget about the practicality of caring for them. For example, there are no marks or streaks left on a matte surface, which cannot be said about glossy coatings.

General characteristics

The operational parameters of the monitors determine how comfortable the perception of the “picture” will be. First of all, it is worth noting the resolution, which in the latest models is 2560x1600. will determine how saturated the image will be. Monochrome models are practically never found on the modern market, and versions in the latest families at least have a 32-bit matrix. Almost all standard types of monitors operate at frequencies in the range of 60-100 Hz. As this value increases, the flickering effect during broadcasting decreases, which improves viewing comfort. Of course, the size of the monitor also matters. Today you can find small-format models of 17-20 inches, and screens of 30-40 inches.

Monitor selection criteria

In addition to the main characteristics, you should consider the functionality of the monitor, its ergonomics and the availability of additional accessories. In terms of functionality, the models differ in the range of settings, the presence of special operating modes, special capabilities for energy-saving operation, etc. When assessing which type of monitor is best for specific tasks, it would be useful to decide on the implementation of the interface. In this case, the most convenient way to perform the same settings is selected - through the monitor menu or through mechanical controls on the case. As for additional accessories, they mainly relate to fastening elements. The better the quality of the brackets, racks and retaining panels, the more reliable the stability of the entire structure will be.

Monitor manufacturers

The leaders in the segment are manufacturers such as BenQ, ASUS, DELL, Samsung, etc. The developers of these companies strive to master not only the main technological areas in terms of improving image quality, but also focus on the specific interaction of monitors with other computer components. The middle class is represented by brands like Hitachi, SuperSonic and Philips. All major types of monitors, from LCD to the latest models on the OLED platform, are produced under the brands of these manufacturers. And if in terms of technological perfection this product may be inferior to the above-mentioned leading companies, then in terms of price it has an advantage. For example, an average one in terms of characteristics can be purchased for 10-12 thousand rubles, while offerings from ASUS or BenQ with similar operating parameters cost about 15-18 thousand. At the same time, the budget segment is also popular, in which they try to present their developments by both premium and little-known companies. In this group you can find models of modern monitors with a price tag of about 5-7 thousand.

Conclusion

Segmentation of monitors by class and type is becoming more complex and vague as new developments are introduced. Subtypes are appearing in seemingly established segments - liquid crystal and LED monitors. Two popular varieties are acquiring different modifications, endowed with new functions and improved ergonomic properties. In particular, modern types of monitors have long switched to digital interfaces, are gradually being equipped with support for the promising 4K playback format, and are increasingly appearing in touch versions. Of course, the improvement of the basic principles of creating monitors does not stand still. In this regard, the greatest interest among manufacturers is logically aroused by the LED platform and the OLED system that continues it, with its own technological modifications.

An important device in any computer is the monitor, because the quality of the picture, and therefore your comfort while working or playing on the computer, depends on it. Monitors differ from each other in many ways, so today we will tell you how to choose the right monitor for your computer.

What criteria should you use to choose a monitor for your computer?

All displays differ from each other in their technical characteristics (parameters), which will be discussed below. Write down the parameters that are important to you on a piece of paper and go to the store with it to choose your new monitor!

Screen size. When purchasing, first of all pay attention to the size of the monitor screen. It is measured in inches (1 inch = 2.54 centimeters). On a large screen it is much more convenient to watch movies, play games, work with windows, etc. However, large monitors require more power from the video card, in particular, if the computer is an old model and the monitor has a diagonal of 24 inches, slight stuttering is possible. Small monitors are good because their price tag is much lower, so to save your budget you can choose an 18 or 19 inch monitor. For desperate gamers or those who like to watch movies on a computer, we recommend paying attention to 27-inch monitors.

Widescreen monitor. If previously the market was dominated by monitors with a 4:3 format, now widescreen monitors with an aspect ratio of 16:9 or 16:10 are very popular. The fact is that most modern films and games are released in exactly this format - narrow and wide. If your monitor is not like this, then, most likely, watching new games or movies will not be interesting at all, because the picture will be small, which is completely unacceptable.

Maximum screen resolution. Do you want the picture on the screen to be as clear as possible?! Then choose monitors with an extension of 1920x1080 pixels. Screen resolution is the total number of dots (pixels) vertically and horizontally. The more of these points there are, the better. In addition, on such computer monitors you can place several open windows at once. For example, on a monitor with an extension of 2560x1440, 4 windows will perfectly fit, which will not interfere with each other, and they can be used freely. Widescreen monitors often have resolutions of 1366x768, 1920x1080 and 2560x1440.

LED backlight. Old-style monitors have built-in cold cathode fluorescent lamps, which provide backlighting in the monitor (in the technical data, this item is abbreviated CCFL). New monitors, as a rule, use a new technology - LED backlighting, which is also called LED backlighting. Thanks to it, the color rendition of the screen improves, and energy consumption, on the contrary, decreases. The only thing that is unpleasant about this technology is that LED monitors cost a little more than regular monitors (with CCFL technology).

Type of LCD matrix. All LCD monitors are manufactured using the same technology - TFT (stands for Thin Film Transistor), however, LCD matrices also have their own additional types of technology by which they are manufactured. Depending on this, they are divided into the following types:

  • TFTIPS(versions: TFT S-IPS, TFT H-IPS, TFT UH-IPS, TFT E-IPS, TFT P-IPS). The advantages of these matrices include excellent color reproduction, wide viewing angles and correct black color. The disadvantage is the long response time (which is not suitable for gamers and movie buffs) and, naturally, the inflated price. These monitors are suitable for working with graphics.

  • TFT MVA(other versions: TFT PVA, TFT S-PVA). The advantages and disadvantages are the same as those of TFT IPS, except that this type of matrix also has good contrast.

  • TFT TN(Twisted Nematic). This technology is one of the very first, and therefore one of the oldest. However, it is still in great demand among consumers due to its low price and short response time (important for dynamic pictures - games and films). There are a lot of shortcomings, ranging from poor contrast or color to such a disadvantage as the appearance of “dead pixels”.

Stereo speakers. Stereo speakers are specially built into some monitor models in order to replace standard speakers. However, the quality of these speakers is very poor and the sound is far from ideal. However, in general, it is a very useful thing if you use the monitor as a TV (after all, many models have built-in TV tuners). If you strive for good sound, then it is better to purchase separate speakers for your computer, or even better, a 5.1 sound system for comfortable viewing of movies or TV series. Consequently, stereo speakers are usually an unnecessary thing in a monitor designed for a computer.

HDMI input. The HDMI interface is one of the most popular today, because, firstly, it is universal, and secondly, it is capable of transmitting video and sound in digital format. Accordingly, a monitor connected to a computer via HDMI is capable of transmitting images in much better quality than via VGA.

DVI input. The DVI interface is also capable of transmitting video signals in digital format, but without an audio signal. This connection is recommended for use on monitors with screen resolutions greater than 19 inches (since it is on them that you can see a significant difference).

Support 3D. Monitors with 3D support are capable of displaying three-dimensional graphics, because today a lot of new films and games are released in this format. Do you want to feel like you are in virtual reality?! Then choose monitors with 3D!

Many readers, in addition to dry explanations, want to see specific examples of monitor models that should be purchased in a particular case. We decided to satisfy the wishes of our readers and especially for them we published examples of computer monitors that we would choose in one case or another, naturally justifying each choice. So let's see what we got.

Which monitor to choose for a designer

A distinctive point in a monitor for a designer is that such screens are capable of more accurately conveying colors, so it is very important that the matrix of the designer’s monitor be created using IPS technology (we wrote about all the advantages and disadvantages of this model a little earlier).

Which monitor to choose for gaming

When choosing a monitor for gaming, we advise you to pay attention to 2 points. Firstly, this is the response time; the shorter it is, the better the monitor will be able to show you dynamic scenes in games. Therefore, choose monitors with response time less than 4 ms. Secondly, find out what horizontal viewing angle the monitor has. A gaming monitor must have angle from 170 degrees. If it is smaller, then if you look at the screen at a slightly angle, you will not clearly see the image on the screen (colors will be dark, objects will be blurry and indistinct).

How to choose a good monitor for your home

A good monitor for the home should have maximum functions and capabilities, since it can be used as a TV, as a computer monitor, as a screen for a game console, and as a home theater. Moreover, he must perform all these functions at a high level. In addition, we should not forget about the quality of the picture on the screen and the release date (it is better to choose a new model that will not have to be replaced with a new one next year).

Display size and resolution are the most obvious characteristics that have a decisive impact on cost. As the most affordable device, we recommend 21-22-inch models with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels (Full HD) with an IPS matrix at a price of 8,000 rubles.

Cheaper displays tend to not be worth the money spent on them. Instead of a digital HDMI or DVI input, some only have analog VGA. This alone causes a fuzzy picture to be displayed, the contrast and color intensity of which are even more lost on a cheap TN matrix.

Monitors: how many inches to take?

The really good all-rounders are in the 24-inch HD models with 16:9 or 16:10 aspect ratios. The 16:9 aspect ratio monitor displays movies and TV shows without black bars. A monitor with an aspect ratio of 16:10 has more vertical space, which is very useful when surfing the web and working with programs.

The elite of mid-class monitors include devices with larger diagonals: from 27 to 29 inches. Most 27-inch 16:9 models have a resolution of 2560x1440 pixels. They are convenient because they provide a lot of space for working with several programs at once.

In terms of the number of dots per unit of screen surface area, 27-inch displays are superior to 24-inch Full HD (110 ppi vs. 95 ppi), so icons or fonts are slightly smaller on larger monitors. But this doesn't mean you'll have to change Windows settings to scale fonts and characters to the appropriate size—you'll only need to do that on 4K monitors.

29-inch monitors with a resolution of 2560x1080 pixels seem a little unusual at first due to their ultra-wide 21:9 aspect ratio. In daily use, this feature is useful for those users who need to view several open windows simultaneously while working.

Watching a movie in this format is a pleasure. In addition, ultra-wide 29-inch displays use exclusively high-quality IPS matrices, so you can safely choose any model based on design and budget.

For just 15,000 rubles you can purchase a 4K monitor with a diagonal of 27 inches and a resolution of 3840x2160 pixels. However, we do not recommend spending money on such cheap models. Firstly, they have TN matrices installed, which causes the contrast to change at the edges of the image. Secondly, such monitors have a low frame rate, which negatively affects vision, and some games and videos may simply not start.

If you follow our recommendations and limit your choice to modern IPS matrices, and also exclude older models with low screen refresh rates, you will ultimately choose a 27-inch device with support for Full HD, QHD or 4K at a price of 20,000 rubles.

Monitors: only IPS matrices are good enough

Low quality TN matrices are almost gone. They could only be found on monitors and laptops in the lower price category, but, as luck would have it, they are experiencing a rebirth in 4K monitors. Unlike high-quality IPS panels, each subpixel of a TN matrix uses one transistor instead of two, which significantly reduces the cost of manufacturing high-resolution monitors.

The disadvantages are expressed in a decrease in contrast and, at a certain viewing angle, even inversion of the picture. These phenomena are very annoying on monitors with a diagonal of 24 inches or more. Even if you sit in the center of the screen and look at it directly perpendicularly, changes in contrast will be noticeable closer to the edges of the image.

Along with the dependence on the viewing angle, image quality is also determined by other parameters. The brightness level and uniformity of illumination distribution depend on the backlight. Modern models use white LEDs as light sources, which should emit light with a brightness of 250 cd/m² or higher.

Only very cheap devices distribute brightness really poorly. If you frequently edit photos, you should pay attention to the gamut of color space. Monitors with the highest Adobe RGB coverage will suit you. For gamers, pixel response time and related features play an important role. In this regard, TN matrices are to some extent superior to IPS.

If dynamic display of gameplay without artifacts is of paramount importance to you, take a closer look at devices with support for technology AMD FreeSync And NVIDIA G-Sync. They ensure that the monitor's refresh rate is synchronized with the video card's frame rate, thereby eliminating side effects such as tearing, which occurs when a new frame is superimposed on an old one before it disappears from the display. This happens because the monitor is not synchronized with the video card.

If you follow these recommendations, you won't end up choosing the cheapest monitor. And then your device will most likely be equipped with HDMI (optimally 2.0), DVI and DisplayPort 1.2 interfaces. From an ergonomic point of view, it is important to consider the height adjustment of the monitor. And last but not least, pay attention to the warranty. She should be two years old, or even better, three years old.
