DIY smokehouse made from 2 gas cylinders. Everything is easy and simple - a smokehouse from a gas cylinder. Firebox and chimney

A thrifty owner can always breathe life into old unnecessary things. Someone may have an old propane gas cylinder lying around in their utility room. You shouldn’t sell it for scrap metal, because just one day of work and you will have an excellent smokehouse from a gas cylinder with your own hands.

The shape of the cylinder will give the product originality, and you will need a small set of tools that almost any craftsman will have. As a result of the efforts spent, the family will receive delicacies from fish, meat, lard or poultry.

Preparation for production

A gas cylinder is an excellent preparation not only for a smokehouse, but also for a barbecue. However, it is advisable to choose a container that is not damaged by significant corrosion, as this will affect the durability of the product. Also, all work must be carried out only after the remaining gas and gasoline have been properly removed from the cavity.

Video - how to make a smokehouse from a cylinder yourself (brief instructions):

If all the work is done correctly, the product will last on average 15-20 years, which is much longer than store-bought ones.

You will need to stock up on the following materials and tools:

  • gas cylinder (capacity for red household gas 50 l);
  • sheet metal(thickness 3-4 mm);
  • approximately 6 m of building corner with a 45 mm wall (in some cases it can be replaced with a 20x40 mm building profile);
  • chimney pipe (length 100-120 cm, diameter 100-120 mm);
  • door hinges (it is advisable to choose a metal thickness of at least 2 mm);
  • rods for the grid (diameter 8-10 mm reinforcement, square or hexagon is not advisable);
  • wooden blanks for handles (well-dried blanks made of birch or other dense species);
  • grinder (preferably with a soft start);
  • welding machine(electrodes will need 2-3 mm);
  • electric drill (drills must be selected with a minimum length to ensure rigidity during operation);
  • hacksaw for metal (use a blade with a fine tooth).

Working with a cylinder

After selecting a cylinder, it is necessary to visually check it for the presence of deep corrosion. Next, you will need to get rid of the condensate and gas remaining in it. First, take the container out into the open space in the yard or other area. It is preferable to carry out work in dry, sunny weather. There should be no open source of fire near the work site.

Unscrew the valve as much as possible. After the intensive phase, turn the container over to remove residues. You can check whether the gas has completely escaped using ordinary soap paste. Lubricate the valve with it. When bubbles stop appearing, it means that the pressure inside is equal to the outside.

From the top of the future barbecue-smokehouse from a gas cylinder with my own hands Using a hacksaw, we cut off the neck along with the tap.

When cutting off the top, do not allow a spark to occur. In this case, it is necessary to periodically water the treatment area to eliminate the risk of fire. The cut must be wet.

We rinse the opened cavity running water to get rid of the smell. It is convenient to fill the volume with water using a hose. If it does not fit into the hole formed, then pour everything through a funnel.

Adding to water will be effective. ammonia. Leave the container with this solution to settle for several hours. You can stir the liquid periodically. After draining the residue, wash it again with running water.

Making the base for the smokehouse

It is unlikely that any preliminary drawings will be needed to make a smokehouse with your own hands from a gas cylinder. Most often, manufacturers calculate the final result from the material that is available.

In general, this design of a vertical smokehouse can be useful, where you can use an electric stove.

Marking the cuts for the door is done using a long ruler and a pencil. You can duplicate the stripes with thin white chalk.

The cuts will need to be made carefully without displacements, not reaching 100-150 mm along the axis before the rounding of the balloon ends (“top” and “bottom”) begins. There is no need to open the slots right away.

Having made long axial grooves with a grinder, we try on the hinges in place. We clean the surface to be welded with a metal brush fixed to a drill. Some craftsmen clean the area under the hinges with a grinder. The method is practical, but aesthetics are not always preserved. We “grab” the overhead loops by welding.

You can also subsequently secure these with rivets or bolts. However, no coating is allowed on rivets or other fasteners in order to prevent harmful fumes from near food. A more popular option for attaching hinges is final welding with electrodes. When the hinges are welded, we open the grooves separating the door from the frame completely.

From the side to which the tap was attached, we weld an elbow made of pipes onto the barbecue smokehouse from a gas cylinder with our own hands.

The height of the vertical section must be at least a meter. This will ensure high-quality traction and efficient smoldering of the chips during the process. A damper covering the upper end will help control the draft. vertical pipe. In some designs, the damper fits into a cut groove in the pipe.

The second end is connected to the firebox for the smokehouse. To do this, cut out the lower half of the end diameter using a grinder. When using such a smokehouse as a barbecue, the draft in the former gas cylinder will be regulated using this cut-out sector.

During operation, thermal deformations of the manufactured container are possible. Tightening the structure will help reduce their influence. To do this, along the axis of the cylinder in the middle of the hole closed by the lid, we weld a tube with a diameter of 20-30 mm from the inside. It will also serve as a limiter to help prevent the lid from falling deeper. Another function of the pipe is to hang food products from it for smoking. This can also be done through holes drilled in the frame.

Welded strips of metal along the perimeter of the lid will help ensure the tightness of the cavity. They can also serve as a closing stop. A horseshoe-shaped loop on the outside can prevent the lid from falling back sharply.

At the bottom of such smokehouses from gas cylinders, made with your own hands, install a special tray that serves as a container for collecting fat. To avoid smearing the container, it is advisable to cover the tray with food foil. The bases for a removable metal grill are attached above the pallet. You can make it yourself with your own hands from rods of stainless steel wire or use a ready-made unnecessary grill left over from an old refrigerator.

Making a stand (legs or support)

A smokehouse made from a gas cylinder, made by yourself as in the photo, must be stable so as not to tip over the coals and food. To do this, legs are attached to it. If you intend to use the device as a portable product, then it would be wiser to make them removable. Their convenient length will be 80-100 cm.

To do this, we weld bolts to the base of the former cylinder, and weld nuts to the prepared legs from a corner or construction profile. Before transportation, we unscrew the legs and return them to their original position upon arrival.

More often the base is not removable, but is rigidly welded to the base of the cylinder. For greater convenience, you can replace a pair of legs with a pair of wheels. Transportation within the immediate area will be simplified. Comfort for stationary legs will be added by several crossbars or a full-fledged shelf under the cylinder. In the cooking process, useful space always comes in handy.

Smokehouse firebox

If this unit is intended to be used not as a smokehouse, but only as a barbecue from gas cylinders, then an additional firebox will not be needed. If the owner intends to engage in smoking, then the fire will need to be lit in an additional container.

Additional firebox made of welded steel sheets

To make a firebox, you will need to cut a sheet of metal 3-4 mm thick. It is also possible to cut another cylinder of smaller volume. Two holes in the end opposite walls are left for mating with the smoking chamber and for installing a damper. The third hole is necessary for laying wood chips that form smoke smoke.

Additional firebox from another cylinder

Even a slight distance from the smoking chamber from the sawdust firebox will help prevent open flames. This is done by cutting into the pipe. In some designs, its role is played by a special corrugation.

The length of the finished smokehouse will help determine the final result, because hot smoking uses more smoke high temperature. For cold smoking you need almost cooled smoke.

The most important thing is that before the first smoking you should definitely let the unit go idle - heat it with wood, but without meat.

The video shows an example of a barbecue grill, smokehouse, made by hand from three 50-liter gas cylinders.

Today in the store you can find a smokehouse for every taste. But the prices are steep, to put it mildly. If you show a little diligence, you can save a lot by making a fish and meat smoker yourself. For example, from a gas cylinder. The metal from which it is made is quite strong. This means that you can easily provide your family with delicacies. TO DIY optic from a gas cylinder, videos and photos you will find in our article, if you are planning to implement such a design, be sure to read it to the end.

Necessary materials for making a smokehouse:

1. Gas cylinder (volume 50 l.);
2. Iron sheet 4 ml. It is necessary for organizing the firebox;
3. Pipes for making a chimney elbow;
4. Pipes for connecting to the firebox;
5. Pipes for the stand (smaller diameter);
6. Hinges to install the door;
7. Rods (small diameter). Necessary for making gratings.
Before starting installation, do not forget that the gas from the cylinder must be completely released and then washed with water. This will prevent an explosion.

Step-by-step instructions for making a smokehouse from a gas cylinder:

  • Let's mark the door. Don't cut it all the way out. Bend it a little, weld the hinges, and then cut them out completely;
  • Instead of the neck, which should be sawed off, we weld an elbow and insert a chimney. The pipe is made with a damper so that the smoke output can be easily adjusted;

  • Now let's cut a hole to connect the smokehouse to the firebox. We need it to regulate traction. You need to weld a rod along the edges of the hole (can be replaced with a metal strip). Then the metal will not bend when heated;
  • We will install a steel sheet in the lower part of the smokehouse. We need it to collect and remove fat. The smokehouse grate is made of a material such as metal rods;

  • The stand can be welded or removable. Removability can be easily ensured by making holes for the bolts. For example, you can weld 4 tubes to the bottom in the corners of the smokehouse. Their length is about 6 cm. When you assemble the smokehouse, these tubes should be inserted into pipes with a large diameter on a stand. If you build wheels on these stands, your smokehouse from a gas cylinder will become mobile. A utility shelf for storing dishes or firewood can be equipped under the smokehouse;

  • To make a firebox, use a smaller gas cylinder. It is necessary to make 2 special holes with doors in it. Sawdust will be loaded into the top. At the bottom there is a vent. In order to prevent fire from entering the smokehouse, the firebox is connected to the smokehouse not directly, but through a small transition. It is easy to make from a pipe.

Itself. Naturally, they need different temperatures. Therefore, to ensure cold smoking, the pipe connecting to the smokehouse should be extended. Then the hot air, passing through the pipe, will cool to desired temperature, which should be in the range of 20-25 degrees. In the universal version of the smokehouse, a pipe of the length required for the type of smoking you will need at a particular moment is installed.

So, with a little effort, you will have the equipment to prepare magnificent delicacies, because it’s so easy to make gas cylinder smoker with your own hand, when you have photos and videos at hand. With this we say goodbye to you, we wish you success in all your endeavors, see you again on our website - a farmer without hassle!

Do you have an old gas cylinder lying around or spoiled? Don't rush to throw it away for recycling! It will make an excellent smokehouse, as well as a grill and barbecue, where you can prepare aromatic, healthy dishes for the festive and everyday table. Installation requires certain tools, materials and a day of free time.

Preliminary work for assembling a smokehouse from a gas cylinder

The smokehouse is assembled only after full preparation necessary funds for installation. This will ensure high speed and quality in the work process. Required:

  • Balloon. It shouldn't be rusty. If, after cutting the container, it turns out that the metal inside has a lot of corrosion, it is better to postpone the work, since such a product will not last long;
  • Grinder with grinding equipment (disc with replaceable sanding wheel);
  • Electric drill;
  • Set of metal drills;
  • Welding machine with electrodes;
  • Hinges for doors. If the doors are large, you must have 2 hinges.
  • Metal door handle.
  • Rods (steel or stainless steel) d=10 mm;
  • Metal corner;
  • Pipes for supporting the device.

Preparatory work with the container

A gas cylinder is a container in which there was gas in a compressed state, although there is no longer a high concentration, but it is necessary to observe personal safety precautions.

The barbecue smokehouse from a gas cylinder is assembled when the following are carried out preparatory work with capacity:

  • Eliminate remaining gas by opening the valve. The container should be turned upside down. How can you tell whether the contents have come out of a metal container or not? Having prepared a soap solution from liquid soap, apply it to the shut-off and control device (at the bottom of the valve foot). Bubbles have formed, which means the gas has not escaped.

When work is carried out to dismantle old gas cylinders, all work must be performed away from housing, people and the source of fire! Do not check for gas using matches or a lighter. If it is not completely released, the substance will ignite and burn your hand.

Making your own design

The smokehouse is mounted as follows:

  • A cutting line for the door is drawn along the length of the cylinder and cut with a grinder with a special nozzle for metal. Side walls must be left untouched;
  • The bottom of the cylinder for the firebox is cut off. It is also better to mark the cutting line so as not to damage the holding ring of the container;

Try not to use a cylinder with damaged side rings, as they serve as the basis for the entire structure. Obvious defects noticeably worsen appearance and may damage the design of the final product

Supports for a stationary device

Such a multifunctional stationary structure must have stable legs. An excellent option would be metal corners or square pipes, which will be additional power elements to avoid body deformation. They are welded on both long sides of the container. Pipe legs are attached to them, also by welding.

The resulting design can be supplemented with a table on which it will be convenient to place items and ingredients for cooking:

According to personal preferences, we determine what kind of grill smokehouse from a gas cylinder should be and cut off the legs from metal pipe. The approximate dimensions of a stationary smokehouse are about 1 meter. If the device will also be used as a barbecue and is intended to be transported in a car - up to 35 cm.

The method of attaching the legs depends on the future use. A stationary device will be more stable if metal legs weld using a welding machine. If mobility is envisaged, then it is better to make twist-out threaded supports

Making a brazier (furnace)

Using a welding machine and stainless steel sheet, you need to make a firebox. Its size depends on personal preferences, so its dimensions should be thought out in advance. Here are some tips:

  • The larger the firebox, the faster the product will cook.
  • A barbecue smoke generator requires a door for storing firewood and wood chips, as well as an opening for removing ash;
  • A smoke exhaust pipe is installed, which should fit the neck (the place where the valve is cut off). A welding machine is used;

Making supports for a portable structure

A portable smokehouse made from a cylinder is more functional, but the assembly process is slightly different.

We all love to cook food over fire, as such food has its own unique taste that cannot be compared with anything else. In this article, the author will tell you how to make a special device for these purposes; it will be universal and will include a smokehouse, grill and barbecue. The entire manufacturing process is described in detail and accompanied full photo report.

The peculiarity of this smokehouse is that the hearth is located separately from the smoking chamber, that is, the products are smoked exclusively in smoke, thanks to this there will be no strong overheating.

The smoking chamber can be made from a gas cylinder, expansion tank, or from a large diameter pipe. It is advisable to take thicker metal, as it can burn out over time.

To make a smokehouse we will need:

Materials:

Gas cylinder;
- for the hearth - metal with a thickness of 6 mm;
- steel corners and profile pipe for the frame;
- four wheels;
- ventilation dampers;
- pipe;
-thermometer;
- loops;
- wooden handle;
- shelf for dishes;
- heat-resistant paint.

Tool:

Welding machine;
- Bulgarian;
- pliers
- hammer;
- metal brush;
- protective equipment.

Let's start by making a frame; the smokehouse itself will be installed on it in the future; we cook it from the corners, according to the planned dimensions. Next, in order for the smokehouse to move, we attach rollers at the bottom of the frame.

Then we take a balloon and, using a grinder, cut off one side part, smoke will flow into the smokehouse through this hole. Next, mark the outline of the window and cut it out. When everything is ready, we make a door from the cut out part, use hinges, which we fix with bolts.

We install an aluminum seal along the entire contour of the window and secure it with rivets.

Now we move on to the manufacture of the combustion chamber, we take sheet metal 6 mm thick, cut out metal walls from it, which we then weld to each other, and also install a door, which we fix on hinges. The left wall of the combustion chamber needs to be made with a small semicircle in the upper part, we make it according to the shape of the cylinder. This hole is necessary so that the heat and smoke from the hearth are evenly distributed throughout the smokehouse.

We drill a lot of holes on the side of the chamber in the lower part; they are needed for ventilation. Next, we attach a special damper nearby that will regulate the air intake.

Now we are making a mechanism that will close the combustion chamber. Everything is shown in detail in the photo.

A spring was used as a handle for closing the ball chamber, which was fixed by welding.

To make it easier to move or further storage smokehouse, it was decided to make the combustion chamber removable; for this, a metal plate was cut out and welded to the cylinder, and special holes for bolts were made in it. Similar holes also need to be made in the side of the combustion chamber. When everything is ready, we attach the camera to the plate, using bolts as a fixing element.

Next, inside the cylinder we weld two horizontal corners at the same level; a grate will rest on them, on which the products will be cooked in the future.

To ensure good smoke circulation in the smokehouse, we make a special chimney. Let's take it metal plate, which we apply to the cylinder and apply markings, as shown in the photo, make a hole for the flange. You can purchase it, or you can make it yourself from a narrow plate, which needs to be bent in the shape of a circle and then welded to the intended location.

When everything is cut out, we weld this part to the cylinder.

We put an elbow on the manufactured flange, then install a vertical section of pipe that will act as a chimney.

In order to know the temperature inside the smokehouse and monitor it in the future, install a thermometer.

We make a special basket for firewood, which will be placed directly in the combustion chamber.

Next, we make a handle for the smokehouse lid, install two aluminum brackets, onto which we attach a wooden strip.

Now you can proceed to painting the product, but before that you need to thoroughly clean everything from rust and remove all the debris that has accumulated during the manufacturing process. We paint the surface with special heat-resistant paint. When everything is dry, we get this multifunctional smokehouse.

A gas cylinder is one of the best materials for the manufacture of smokehouses. And it's quite easy to do if you follow the instructions exactly.

And the resulting design can be used not only for direct purpose, but also as a barbecue or grill.

Selecting a gas cylinder

To build a universal and high-performance smokehouse, you will need an empty gas cylinder medium size.

The products most often used for these purposes are “ AG-50» volume 50 l. It's in every way great choice:

  • thick metal walls will last a long time keep warm;
  • streamlined shape contributes to better smoke circulation;
  • impressive weight provides sustainability(on a stand).

Important! Even in an empty bottle there is always condensation, which needs to be drained. This liquid has an unpleasant and corrosive odor that is difficult to remove from any surface, so it must be drained away from residential buildings, into some container with a lid.

Preparing the cylinder for use as a barbecue-smokehouse

To prepare the cylinder, you need to open the valve and release all remaining gas. Then the valve is cut down - slowly, using a hacksaw. To avoid overheating, periodically water the cut area. cold water. The liquid is drained from the cylinder.

If it flows out reluctantly, to speed up the process, drill hole with a diameter of 2-4 mm. Next, using a hose, pour water into the container and leave it to settle for a day. The next day, the hole in the cylinder is tightly closed by driving a wooden block into it.

From this moment on, you can begin the work that is necessary to obtain the desired version of the smokehouse.

Smokehouse project from a cylinder

There are several options for constructing a smokehouse from a gas cylinder. They differ in several ways:

  • location fireboxes;
  • arrangement smoke chamber(method and place of installation of grilles and hooks);
  • location and design doors;
  • way smoke supply and exhaust.

Firebox can be done from another cylinder smaller capacity, welding it directly to the smoking chamber. If there is no second cylinder, you can build a firebox made of metal sheets and connect it to the cylinder using a pipe.

Photo 1. Diagram explaining the principle by which a smokehouse, barbecue grill and barbecue are combined in one product.

When choosing the second option, it becomes possible to do universal smokehouse, which with a short pipe (chimney) will work as a device for hot smoking, and with lengthening (extension) of the pipe - as for cold smoking.

Smokehouse stands

You can make both a stationary and portable smokehouse from a gas cylinder. In any case it will be necessary stand(bed), since the round container is unstable, despite its heavy weight. Both removable and non-removable (welded to the cylinder) supports have proven themselves well.

If the first option is most desirable, then the easiest way to proceed is as follows:

  • drill into the wall of the cylinder 2 aligned holes for bolts with diameter 10 mm;
  • cook from metal corners or profile pipes stand on legs like a barbecue ( optimal sizes designs 60x25 cm);
  • weld along the support strip of metal;
  • put the bottle down and Mark on the strip hole location for bolts;
  • drill out there are holes in the strip (similar to those on the container);
  • weld from the bottom side of the strip nuts for bolts with diameter 10 mm so that they are exactly under the holes;
  • put the cylinder down on support and screw the bolts through all 4 holes(in container and on strip).

You can also make a stand more in a simple way : weld from segments profile pipe"table" size 60x25 cm, and weld two more pipe sections to it on top, each length 60 cm. A container is placed in the space between them. Additional stops can be welded to the frame of the stand: sections of pipe located at a slope towards the container.

A non-removable stand is made as follows: legs from metal corners of the required length are welded to the container.

Instructions for making a smokehouse with your own hands

At the stage of preparing the cylinder, water is poured into it, after which the hole is tightly closed by driving a block into it. It is in this state that the metal is cut. Water in the container prevents accidental fire. To complete the task use grinder with a disc for metal thickness 2.5-3 mm.

Important! When sawing a water cylinder, you need to place any suitable container under it, in which you will drain liquid when making the first cut. After receiving desired hole drain all the water.

To set up a smokehouse you will need:

  1. Two door hinges, with the help of which the door will close and open.
  2. Door handle.
  3. Knee.
  4. Pipes.
  5. Lattice.
  6. Hooks for hanging products.

Stages of work

Step 1. The upper part of the neck with the tap is cut off.

Step 2. Drain the water.

Step 3. They saw off the back ring, which was necessary to stabilize the cylinder in a vertical position. As a rule, this ring is not welded along the entire circumference of the container, but in several places. We need to find them and cut them down.

Step 4. Each cylinder has a seam line that runs along it, from the bottom to the top. This seam will serve as a guide for marking. Algorithm of actions:

  • take roulette, measured from the seam line 24 cm;
  • put a mark marker or simple pencil;
  • find point at the opposite end balloon, draw a straight line between them;
  • retreat 3 cm from each seam, passing along the circumference of the cylinder towards its central part, and draw lines (you should get two “rings”, one each in the upper and lower parts).

Step 5. Make a straight cut along the line that runs along the entire length of the cylinder, but begins and ends at the previously drawn circles near the neck and bottom (i.e., does not reach the seams).

Step 6. Door hinges are attached on both sides of the cut so that they work to open and close.

Step 7. Using a tape measure, measure the desired width of the door from the cutting line. Draw a line.

Step 8. They make cuts along this line and along the side lines along the circumference, but do not finish the door a little so that it is still in the position fixed on the cylinder.

Step 9. Weld the handle to the door.

Step 10. Finish sawing the door and open it.

Step 11. To prevent the door from moving during operation of the smokehouse, inside two metal rods located along its width are welded to it.

Step 12. An elbow made of pipe, the cross-section of which corresponds to the diameter of the hole, is welded to the hole in the neck of the container formed after sawing off the tap. A chimney pipe will be installed in this elbow, in the upper part of which a damper is attached. With its help, smoke output is controlled.

Step 13. A circle is cut out at the bottom of the cylinder, to which a pipe coming from the firebox is welded.

Step 14. Construct a firebox by choosing any of the methods proposed above.

Step 15. All components of the smokehouse are assembled into a single structure.
