Today, wooden fences are gaining popularity again. Modern analogues made from other materials, of course, are no worse, but from time immemorial, humanity has valued and still values naturalness. Nothing beats naturalness solid wood. Our website presents several types of wooden fences and fences for the home and detailed instructions on how to make them yourself.

Main types of wooden fences

For any owner of a private home, a fence made with your own hands is a special pride. But before you begin its construction, you need to choose the type of structure. Types of wooden fences for private houses and photos for them:

Wattle

Wooden fence network. By type, this is the most ancient variety - rods intertwined with each other in a special way and knees driven into the ground. An antique wicker wooden fence (you can see it in more detail in the photo below) is very unusual; making it with your own hands is not at all difficult, but, unfortunately, it has a short service life.

Ranch

Although this name is reminiscent of American films about cowboys, it should be noted that in our country, such structures were erected a long time ago. They were used to fence gardens, orchards, agriculture animal grazing areas. By design, these are several boards (poles) nailed to a wooden beam.

Palisade

This is also a type of antique fencing that you can make yourself. The stakes are pointed at the top at an angle of 40 degrees. Has an impressive appearance

Lattice

Attractive appearance, such an openwork wooden one is easy to make with your own hands, most often serves as a decorative element personal plot or for its zoning. A decorative wooden fence is not particularly durable. It can be made by crossing straight or diagonally slats or narrow boards.

Fence

The traditional type of wooden fencing is a picket fence. The simplest manufacturing option: the boards are attached in a vertical position to the veins, and those, in turn, to wood posts driven into the ground. This is the most economical and quickly erected way to fence your site. Apparently that's why it became so popular. Easy to use, making it yourself is simple and quick, and with proper care it will last a long time.

One more distinctive feature The advantage of this fence is that it clearly delineates the boundaries without obscuring the area itself.

Separation of wooden fences according to installation technology

Wooden fences, as you can see in the photo above, are:

  1. No foundation. In this case, only wooden poles or metal supports will be needed.
  2. On the foundation. The above-ground part of the foundation is made simultaneously with the wooden beam.

As for finishing, it can be done using any material, taking into account your preferences: stone, corrugated board, brick. A solid wooden fence with a base always looks respectable, stylish, and solid. To make it you need to spend a lot of money, there is an option to reduce the cost of the design - this is to make a wooden fence with your own hands from start to finish.

Stages of installation of wooden fences

Rustic style (Country) has always been and remains at its peak fashion trends. Wooden picket fences - his bright element, and the simplicity of the lines, even without decorations, always looks modern and elegant. Do with my own hands not difficult at all. How to make a wooden fence more complex design? First you need to decide on the material of manufacture.

Important ! When choosing a material for a wooden fence, make sure that the solid wood is free from rot and other damage. Treat the wood with an antiseptic. Or buy ready-made material.

Step-by-step instructions for installing a wooden fence

If you have already decided on the material, choose the proportions: shape, height of the wooden fence. Only after this will it be possible to begin construction directly. How to make a wooden fence with your own hands, drawings and detailed instructions see below.

  • The first step is marking the territory.

  • Next, you need to calculate the number of wooden pillars, picket fences and veins.
  • The ground part of the timber must be treated with tar.
  • Then marking is done along a pre-tensioned cord under the beam (recommended distance is 3 meters).
  • Holes are being dug out. The depth of the holes should be equal to the depth of the soil - this is about 1.5 meters. Holes can be dug with a drill.
  • Think carefully about one nuance: if you are planning to make a high and heavy wooden fence, then in this case be sure to attach supports to the base metal plate. This is necessary for stability and to prevent the fence from twisting under the influence of gravity.
  • Wooden supports are installed vertically on a 12 cm sand cushion, after which the hole is filled with small portions of soil and sand. Compact thoroughly. To make the structure more durable, the hole can be filled with concrete.

  • After installing the supports, you need to calculate and determine the attachment points for the wood veins at the top and bottom.
  • The picket fence is selected according to a pre-selected template, but you can make it even by cutting it along a stretched cord.

To simplify the work, you can purchase a ready-made picket fence with or without drawings.

How to make a checkerboard fence with your own hands

The next type: do-it-yourself wooden fences, checkered in the photo, you can clearly see the difference with the previous one.

Compared to the previous one, the wooden chessboard looks more decorative. Main feature installation is that you can do it in any design: dense or with gaps.

The pillars are installed similarly to the option described above. After installation, you need to attach the beams. Can be cut into wooden pillars grooves, in metal ones it is necessary to weld the corners on which the beams will be located.

Decide in what position you want to make the checkerboard: horizontal or vertical, set the guides. With a vertical checkerboard they are made horizontal and, conversely, with a horizontal checkerboard they are made vertical.

Next, after installing the guides, you can begin installing the boards. Place them in a checkerboard pattern as shown in the picture above (one on each side). They can be secured either with nails or self-tapping screws.

Very important ! Clearly measure and mark the attachment points, because small irregularities will create gaps, and this will significantly spoil the appearance of your fence.

Do-it-yourself wooden ladder fence

A wooden horizontal ladder fence is also very popular, so we will dwell on it in more detail. Making such a structure with your own hands is as easy as the previous ones. Install supports according to a similar principle (described above).

Next, you need to secure it on both sides. decorative overlays made of wood - these will be the guides. As a rule, a channel is used for this purpose; it is easier and easier to insert the board into it at an angle. In this case, it’s up to you to decide at what angle you want to make the Christmas tree. The position is also selected according to preference. The direction can be either vertical or horizontal.

Important ! Do not forget to install cushioning material between them along with the boards. This is necessary for ventilation and to preserve the material from rot.

Upon completion of work, treat the fence with an antiseptic and paint the structure.

The key to the longevity of a solid wood fence

As a material for making wooden fencing you need to choose those wood species that are characterized by strength: ash, mulberry, acacia, oak, aspen, Siberian larch.

By the way, the last option is a truly eternal material; when exposed to water, it does not deteriorate, but, on the contrary, strengthens. It is also worth limiting the use of pine trees to create wooden blocks. You should not use birch if you do not want to change it often; it has the lowest density among all others.

Bars for fencing are used from wood and metal, or as an alternative to wood - overlays. The tree should not be discounted. Today thanks modern technologies There are special metal consoles. Therefore, solid wood supports do not have to be dug deep. The consoles are concreted, and then a wooden beam is attached to them.

The most vulnerable areas of wood are those where the cut is made across the grain. To extend the life of wood in fence blocks, lay the boards horizontally or make canopies. Wood is vulnerable if it comes into direct contact with air:

  1. At high humidity swells and is affected by fungal deposits.
  2. If the air is too dry, it dries out and cracks.

How to treat a wooden fence to reduce the risk of damage and deterioration? This can be done by impregnation with an antiseptic and painting with special materials: Swedish paint, soaked in hot drying oil, yacht varnish.

Prepare Swedish paint you can do it yourself at home. To do this you need to mix the following ingredients:

  • Iron sulfate - 260 grams.
  • Iron minium - 260 grams.
  • Regular table salt-260 grams.
  • You will need 580 grams of rye flour.
  • Drying oil, can also be used linseed oil- 240 grams.
  • About 4.5 liters of water.

The consumption of this mixture will be approximately 200÷300ml/m2. The expected color is golden. If you need a different color, then replace the lead with ocher or manganese peroxide.

Wooden fences have turned into rare fencing even for ordinary village house. Meanwhile, it’s easy to make it yourself.

The craze for fences made of corrugated sheets has practical explanation: available material, fast construction, long service life, low price. As a modern material, profiled sheet has burst into construction market and significantly replaced the traditional tree.

Today it is undeservedly forgotten. But this is - natural material, beautiful, light, durable, from which you can make a unique fence of its kind. It is enough to make a little effort - and a wooden fence will decorate your site, giving plants the opportunity to develop in natural conditions, and not “burn out” in the heat near metal fences.

So, the advantages of a wooden fence:

  • The beauty of natural wood
  • Ease
  • Durability
  • Environmental friendliness.

Types of wooden fence

Lovers do not stop at the traditional version of fencing made of vertical picket fences on wooden posts. This method, although it has a right to life, is being replaced by more modern and beautiful designs. Let's look at a few of them, moving from simple to complex:

  1. Narrow picket fence on wooden posts. Classic, simplest and cheap option house fencing. The construction involves timber for posts (15 by 15 centimeters), timber for veins (4 by 4 centimeters), gravel for filling holes, slats, screws or nails. The classic design can be given originality by changing the gap between the picket rails, its height, and painting it to imitate valuable wood.
  2. Wide figured picket fence on a metal frame. More reliable option, prolonging the service of the fence.
  3. Horizontally installed planed board on metal or brick supports. Involves the creation of blind fences. The fence can be made in the style of “lattice”, “herringbone”, “cross”, “ladder”. A new trend in the construction of wooden fences.
  4. A wooden wattle fence made from planed boards arranged vertically or horizontally.
  5. Ranch style fences are used to enclose huge garden plots located in rural areas. A practical and cheap option.

Construction stages

The beauty and durability of the fence depend on the quality of the wood. You can buy a ready-made picket fence, but there is a danger of “running into” raw material. Your efforts to make a fence from such a picket fence will go down the drain: it will “fail” already in the first year of operation. We recommend ordering a picket fence made from planed boards. Process it according to all the rules and get a wonderful result.

We make a fence frame

To make a frame in wood, minimal effort is required. The pillars are buried at least 40 - 50 centimeters, a gravel cushion is arranged, on which the pillars are installed vertically, their lower part is treated with bitumen and covered with roofing felt. Using bolts or self-tapping screws, two parallel horizontal veins are installed, to which the picket fence will subsequently be attached.

A more durable frame is made from profiled square or rectangular section. The supports are buried one and a half meters into the ground and concreted. Horizontal guides are welded to the posts. The metal is cleaned of scale and painted.

And finally, the most complex and reliable option for creating a frame for a wooden fence is with a monolithic foundation and a base on metal or brick supports. A trench is being prepared for monolithic foundation, formwork. After the foundation has hardened, the base is removed from facing bricks or natural stone, which go well with wood.

Preparing wooden fencing elements

We agreed that it would be a material planed on both sides, so it wouldn’t be difficult to process it antiseptic impregnation without preliminary preparation surfaces. After the slats have dried, apply a primer.

The last stage is painting the wood with pigmented impregnations, glazes or covering compounds. The end part of the picket fence should be thoroughly cleaned with fine-grained sandpaper and also carefully processed. A thrifty owner applies paint in several layers to protect the wood as best as possible and save himself from painting work for the next 8 to 10 years.

Can be used as varnish coating, stains various colors. You can burn wood using a special lamp.

Attention! Processing and painting of a wooden picket fence should be carried out before its installation. If you install unfinished fence pieces and then start painting them, the end pieces will be difficult to access and poorly finished.

Fencing installation

Classic sample - vertical installation fence slats with a gap equal to the width of the picket fence. Installation can be carried out in two ways. In the first case, you attach each batten to the veins using a level. In the second, you pre-assemble the section on a horizontal surface, and then connect it in whole blocks to the support.

Features of installing a fence in the “cross”, “herringbone” and “ladder” styles are the presence of special vertical overlays on the posts, where grooves are made for horizontal fastening of narrow planed boards. Overlays can be made of wood or metal profile.

A variation of a vertically installed picket fence is the “chess” style - the picket fence is attached on the front and back sides alternately. For this purpose, the same overlays are used as when installing a “ladder” fence. Using a “checkerboard” you can create a blank canvas or make small gaps between the slats. The effect is amazing: from a certain angle the fence seems blank, but if you look at the fence from the side, the beauty of your site will be revealed to a passerby.

The “ranch” style is an analogue of the Russian “corral”, it is very simple and cheap to implement: they are horizontally attached to massive posts wide boards(poles). Large areas should be surrounded by such a fence.

The wooden wattle fence is made in the style folk traditions, only instead of a flexible vine, narrow ones are intertwined wooden boards. The length of the board should correspond to the distance between the posts. This fence has the same back and front sides. Can be used as a support for climbing plants.

When making a wooden fence with your own hands, pay attention to important details that will help you ideally make your dream come true:

  1. For structural strength, install vertical posts in the ground on special shoes to increase the support area - no “windage” will be a problem for the fence!
  2. The distance between the pillars should not exceed three meters. Experts consider the optimal distance to be 2.5 meters between supports.
  3. When installing a picket fence, do not rely on your “sharp eye” - work with a level, constantly checking accuracy in all planes
  4. As soon as you purchase wood, immediately treat it against pests. The borer beetle can infest itself there in a very short time - it will no longer be possible to improve the structure of the tree with the help of antiseptics.
  5. Pay special attention to protecting the wooden fence from the sun and atmospheric precipitation. Take care of the choice of paint and impregnation in advance.
  6. Only dry wood can be painted (humidity no more than 12 percent).
  7. We do not recommend using it for painting a wooden fence. oil paints and enamels. They have the property of cracking and crumbling under the influence of unfavorable factors.
  8. For hardware, use galvanized metal fasteners that are not susceptible to rust.
  9. When attaching the picket fence, make sure that the screws enter the tree strictly perpendicularly, without damaging the tree.

Follow these simple tips, and you can build a beautiful and durable wooden fence on your property yourself.

They have always been famous for their popularity. This was largely due to its relatively inexpensive price and ease of installation. But today the situation has changed a little, and now they create not just fences from wood, but real masterpieces.

Let's look at everything in detail.

Making a wooden fence on your own. Step-by-step procedure

The construction of a wooden fence can be divided into several stages, namely:

  1. Installation of support pillars;
  2. Installation of crossbars;
  3. Covering the installed frame.

Each stage in construction must be completed in in full.

Installation of support pillars

Installation of support pillars is carried out using the backfill method. The algorithm of actions is as follows:

It is important to know! Sand and crushed stone will fit more densely if the mixture is wetted with water.

Installation of cross beams

Transverse joists, which are made of wood, are best installed using brackets.

The installation algorithm is as follows:

It is necessary to pay attention to the fact that the distance between the transverse joists can be reduced. However, in this case, the structure may reduce its strength. The support itself must be at least 10 centimeters higher than the casing, and the bottom must be at a distance from the ground no more than 15 centimeters.

Covering the installed frame

Before you begin the installation yourself mounting boards, you must remember that there are several ways.

In one of the methods, the picket fence is installed on the logs before the latter are mounted into the supports, namely:

If we talk about the second installation method, it involves the direct installation of each board separately. In this case, you need to prepare for a long and labor-intensive process. After each installed board it is necessary to measure the distance between them (if you need clearance between the boards) and check for a clear vertical line.

It is worth noting that any of the methods is popular among owners of private and country houses, so it is impossible to say which one is better. Everyone chooses an option for themselves depending on the choice of wooden fence design.

How can you treat and paint a wooden fence?

It is necessary to understand that an installed wooden fence takes on a variable climate in all seasons. For this reason, it is mandatory.

Important to remember! Before installation, all metal components of the fence must be primed and painted.

Do not forget that ultraviolet solar radiation damage to a wooden fence for the reason that as a result of their exposure, the wood loses internal moisture, thereby losing its bearing capacity and the appearance itself.

This impregnation must be applied several times to the primer with the possibility of deep penetration. After this, you can use moisture-resistant paint and varnish to give the wooden fence an attractive look.

The price of pleasure

If we talk about the cost of the necessary building materials, the average price is indicated in the table:

Name of building material Volume Cost price
Board 1 m 3 About 3 thousand rubles
Cement 1 kg About 10 rubles
Antiseptic 10 l. About 2 thousand rubles
self-tapping screws 500 pcs. 300 – 400 rubles
dye 3 l. About 400 rubles
Metallic profile 1 meter About 130 rubles
Grinding wheel 1 PC. About 50 rubles
Edged board 1 m 3 About 4 thousand rubles

Design options

To date, there is no other material besides wood that is equally flexible for implementing various design solutions (at the same time, wood is very affordable in terms of price).

And this is how this fence looks internally. No one will say that the view has become worse.

In this version of the design solution, attention was paid to every detail. You can see how the contours themselves are worked out, and the corners are smoothed to the fullest extent. You can see in the photo sliding gates from the same yard.

Agree, few of us know what techniques this or that designer uses to realize his fantasies. But they use: firing, create the effect of antiquity, successfully combine wood with various forged metal elements, and even simply sand the wood and paint it in various shades.

What do you think about brutal style? Agree, the view is simply impressive.

To implement such a design solution, you only need a jigsaw, Sander and woodworking skills. If you have the tools and desire, you can achieve the effect of shabby wood.

How do you feel about puzzles? If you wish, you can initially draw a picture on the board, and then cut it out according to the template. It is worth paying attention to the fact that this work is considered jewelry, since each board has its own clear size and bending.

At the same time, the most complex process When erecting such a wooden fence, its installation is considered (not everyone is capable of making such an arrangement).

For construction, first of all, you need to carefully select the board. In no case should it be allowed to have different thickness or width in any place of the board. In this version distinctive feature is his affordable price, but this is compensated by the enormous labor that is necessary to create such a creation.

Despite the fact that a board up to 1.5 centimeters thick is not very suitable for fences, it can be used to create an excellent lattice-type fence. Agree, the view is no worse than the previous options. And if you decorate it with greenery that will entwine it, the view will be gorgeous.

Over the past few years, unedged boards have increased in price by more than 15-20%, but this does not prevent it from remaining in the low price range. Moreover, it is often used when constructing a wooden fence in this style.

As you can see, this example clearly shows one of the design solutions when working with not edged board. If desired, you can achieve any exclusive solution.

What do you think of the design solution in the style of blinds? Agree, the view is just bomb.

Wooden fence: main advantages

Tree - classic solution for building a fence. Despite all the advantages modern materials– corrugated sheeting, chain-link mesh, Euro picket fence, etc. – wooden picket fences are still in very high demand.

The advantages of wood are obvious:

  • environmental cleanliness;
  • accessibility and relatively low cost;
  • ease of processing;
  • aesthetics appearance.

At the same time, this material also has a number of disadvantages, which mainly relate to its fragility. Therefore, if you decide to build a wooden fence around a country house, you will have to take proper care to ensure that it lasts as long as possible. And at the same time it did not lose either its appearance or its protective properties.

To do this, even before the start of construction, it is necessary to cover everything wooden elements antiseptic to protect against mold and rot. In addition, it doesn’t hurt to impregnate them with a fire retardant in order to fire protection. Well, after completing the installation of the wooden fence, you will need to cover it with paint (preferably waterproof), stain or varnish.

The finishing coating will significantly extend the life of your fence and reliably protect it from the sun, dampness, temperature changes, pests and others. negative factors operation.

We build a wooden fence with our own hands: where to start?

The start of any construction is laid in construction estimate. In your case it will be extremely simple. After all, if you are going to build a fence yourself, all you need to do is select the appropriate materials, calculate their quantity and, of course, the cost.

It is noteworthy that if previously a wooden fence meant a simple picket fence, today for those who want to build such a fence around their house, much more is available wide choose. First of all, we note that there are two main categories of wooden fences - solid and with clearance.

The most popular among both the first and second are the following types of fences:

Which one to choose is up to you. At the same time, you need to remember that the construction of a solid fence will require twice as much material as for a fence with a gap. On the other hand, the second option will not be able to hide what is happening in your yard from curious neighbors and passers-by. However, fences with clearance demonstrate higher wind resistance at a similar height to solid ones. But in any case, the choice will depend only on your financial capabilities and aesthetic preferences.

Site plan

It is best to start construction by drawing up a work plan. This is the only way you can adequately assess its volume, your financial capabilities and the time it will take to build a fence around the site. To do this, it is necessary to measure the perimeter of the latter, as well as determine the location of the gate section and wicket. If you want to build a fence at low cost, the most suitable option are point supports - in this case, a foundation is not required to build a fence.

When calculating the number of support pillars, you should remember that they are installed no further than 3 m from each other. Otherwise, the transverse logs will begin to sag over time, which will lead to a loss of strength of the fence.

Support posts for gates and wickets, as well as corner supports, should be more massive than purlins, since in fact they support the entire fence structure. For the former, it is best to choose a metal profiled pipe with a cross-section of 6x6 cm, and a profile of 4x4 cm will do an excellent job as the latter.

After taking measurements, it is necessary to draw a construction plan. It will help you visually assess the amount of work and calculate the optimal configuration of the fence, of course, taking into account all the features of the site being developed - height differences, the presence of obstacles, etc.

Purchasing materials and collecting tools

Let's assume that you have chosen as the main material wooden picket fence 1.5 m high, the width and thickness of which are 15x2.5 cm. To ensure wind resistance of the fence and its overall reliability, the installation depth of the support posts should be equal to a third of the height. In this case, the lower edge of the support should be located 20 cm below the soil freezing line. If on your site the latter does not exceed 80 cm, then the height of the support will be 2.5 m.

In areas with heaving or weak sandy soils the support pillars will have to be rammed. On strong soil, it will be possible to get by with the pile or driving method of installation. The supports of high and heavy fences installed on normal soils will have to be concreted.

Once you have decided on the basic materials, all that remains is to buy them and deliver them to the construction site. Along the way, you need to remember to purchase everything else that may be required to install the fence - Consumables(nails, bolts, drills, emery or grinding wheels, antiseptic and fire retardant, stain, varnish or paint, etc.) and, of course, a tool.

To build a wooden fence you will need:

  • roulette;
  • level;
  • hammer;
  • axe;

There is no need to delay the process of building a fence - it is better to start it when everyone is present necessary materials. As for the tool, what you don’t have, you can borrow from neighbors or friends already in the process of work.

Construction of wooden fences: algorithm of actions

The optimal period for arranging the area around a country house is summer, but the fence can be built in both spring and autumn - the main thing is that the soil is not frozen and dry. Before starting work, the area along the fence installation line must be thoroughly cleared and, if possible, leveled.

The construction of the fence is carried out in several stages:

  1. Site marking.
  2. Installation of supports.
  3. Installation of picket fences on transverse joists.
  4. Installation of crossbars on supports.
  5. Finishing of metal and wooden surfaces.

To mark the future fence you will need a tape measure, metal or wooden pegs and a nylon cord. First, the installation points for support posts for gates and wickets, as well as corner supports, are designated. Here, taking into account the external dimensions of the supports, pegs are driven in and connected with a nylon cord - it allows you to control the linearity of the fence.

Installation of support pillars

This is the most labor-intensive stage of construction. Each support, or rather the quality of its installation, requires the closest attention. After all, the reliability of the entire fence directly depends on this.

Backfilling of support pillars is performed as follows:

  1. Using a crowbar and a shovel, holes of the required depth are dug, the diameter of which should be approximately three times the diagonal cross-section of the supports.
  2. Sand is poured into the bottom of the hole approximately 5 cm high, which is watered and thoroughly compacted.
  3. A post is placed at the bottom of the hole and a mixture of crushed stone and sand is poured 20-30 cm deep, which must be compacted properly.
  4. During the installation of each of the supports, you must carefully monitor the correct level.
  5. If sand makes up a significant part of the soil or it is heaving, partial concreting must be done. To do this, you need to pour 2-10 cm of sand into the hole, compact it and cover it with concrete to a depth of approximately -10 cm from the soil line. The remaining hole is filled with a mixture of crushed stone and sand and compacted thoroughly.
  6. On strong soils, backfilling is carried out up to the soil line. If desired, you can concrete the top 10 cm of the pit.

Assembling the fence panel

To create fence sections, you should prepare transverse logs and a picket fence. The first ones are carried out individually along the length of the span. In the case of a fence 1.5 m high, there will be 2 crossbars on each section (if the height is significant, 3 or more transverse joists are installed to ensure the stability of the fence structure). The logs should be placed symmetrically with respect to the middle of the fence but no more than 20-30 cm from the top and bottom of the picket fence.

If the crossbars are wooden, all that remains is to lay the boards and strengthen them with nails or self-tapping screws. The picket fence is attached to the profile pipe using bolts - to do this, drill into the joists through holes. You can install the boards on the crossbars after attaching the latter to the supports - it’s up to you to decide how it will be more convenient.

Wooden cross members are mounted using bolted connections, but for this purpose to metal support pillars on required height you need to weld special ears. Lags from profile pipe installed by welding.

After installing the picket fence to the crossbars, the section is mounted on supports - and so on until the bitter end. The last thing you need to do is coat the wooden elements of the fence with varnish, stain or paint, and the metal ones - prime and paint.
