However, the painting of discs can also be caused by a more prosaic reason - the nondescript appearance of the discs acquired during operation. The result of this is the formation of various types of chips, dents and scratches on the surface of the discs.
There are two ways to paint car rims:

2. Paint it yourself using acrylic paints.

Materials and equipment

1. First you need to make sure that the surface of the disk is even. This stage is best left to specialists who have special equipment for detecting irregularities on disks and straightening them.
2. Purchase all of the above materials and necessary tools, in case of their absence. When purchasing primer, paint and varnish, you should make sure that they are from the same manufacturer. Only compliance with this condition can give confidence that they will be compatible, which means they will fit securely and hold well. Experts recommend buying acrylic paint in cans. This will avoid the need to purchase special equipment such as a compressor or spray gun.
3. You should start by thoroughly washing the disc. This will allow you to get rid of any remaining sand and dirt, even if they are located in places where access is difficult. The washed discs are wiped dry with a rag and, if possible, blown compressed air and dry for several hours.
4. At this stage with discs and primer. This can be done without the use of technology, that is, manually, using sandpaper, but it is best to use a special attachment that is fixed in the drill. Cleaning must be carried out so efficiently that no old paint remains even in the most hidden places.
5. The cleaned disc must be degreased using a solvent. After this procedure, the surface of the disk should dry well.
6. A primer is applied to a dry and clean surface. The best result is achieved if the primer is applied in three layers. After applying each layer, allow the treated surface to dry.
7. Now you can start painting directly. Like a primer, paint is applied layer by layer, and each applied layer also needs to dry. If you are too lazy to remove the tire and you decide to paint the rim on the assembled wheel (although this is not recommended), the surface of the tires should be covered with cellophane film or masking tape.
8. You will also need tape if you need to paint the disc in several different colors. In this case, the required pattern is laid out using tape, and each paint is applied according to its own patterns. This must be done very carefully to prevent the boundaries of the surface being painted from being blurred.
9. After completing the painting work in one or more colors and completely drying the surface of the disc, varnish is applied to it. This is done to give the paint layer additional reliability and strength. After applying the varnish, the disc must dry for at least 24 hours. When carrying out work, it is better to carry out the entire complex on each wheel separately, rather than, for example, cleaning all the disks and then moving on to another stage.
Priming discs
After thorough cleaning, you can begin priming. Before applying primer, the disc must be degreased. If the work is carried out on a disk from which the rubber has been removed, then nothing additional needs to be done. And if the rubber is installed, all surfaces that will not be covered with soil must be covered with film and tape. You also need to close the tire inflation valve.
Primer
The primer must be applied in two layers with a break of 10-15 minutes between each layer. After applying the second coat, allow the primer to dry completely.
Wheel painting
Next we move on to painting. If the disc is painted with only one color, then it is enough to cover the unpainted surfaces and apply several layers of paint with an interval of 10-15 minutes between coats for the layers to dry.
If a two-color coloring is chosen, then the main paint is applied first, again in several layers. Afterwards it needs to be given time to dry properly. Then those places with the base paint already applied that will not be painted over with the second color should be covered with masking tape. 
After covering the unpainted surfaces, several layers of second paint are applied. After painting, you need to give the paint time to dry.
Final work
The final stage of painting the wheels will be applying varnish. Again, do not forget about protecting surfaces on which the varnish will not be applied. It is also advisable to apply the varnish in two layers.
To improve the appearance after painting, the tire can be coated with silicone grease for rubber parts, this will give it the appearance of a new tire, which, together with a freshly painted wheel, will look very good.
After completing the work, it is better to stop by a tire service station to check the wheel balancing.
Car wheels painted by yourself will look no worse than after taking them to a specialized workshop. Besides independent restoration will bring no less pleasure than the attractive appearance of the wheels. Before you paint your car's rims, let's look at what paints are used for the job.

Having finished applying the first layer, you need to leave the surface to dry. After which the priming procedure will need to be repeated. To speed up drying, you can use a hair dryer. Care should be taken to ensure that there is ventilation in the room where painting work will be carried out. It is best to carry out work outside in dry, windless weather. After some time, it will be possible to paint the rims, since by then the primer will have time to dry completely, and the acrylic paint will lie perfectly on the treated surface.
We paint the disk. Final stage
Using a spray gun or a can of acrylic paint, we begin to paint the disk. Before starting work, do not forget to place a cloth or paper under it to prevent dirt from getting onto the surface to be painted. After applying the 1st layer, you must let the paint dry, after which the procedure must be repeated. It is advisable to paint the disc three times, and then you can start varnishing it. Varnish (colorless) is applied twice with a break of 15 minutes. It is recommended to let the wheel dry for 1-2 days before using it. To avoid an annoying surprise, do not forget to paint the spare tire. To give the disk surface a more attractive appearance, it can be polished after drying.
But it happens that this is not possible, or the damage is noticeable only on one disk, or you just like them and don’t want to change them. In this case, repair and construction work is carried out in a specialized service station or on their own. Painting rims yourself will take more time and effort, but the result may be almost no different from the work of professionals, especially if you try to comply as much as possible with the technology used in professional service centers. And each time you will do better, because you will acquire the necessary skills and experience.

Do-it-yourself powder coating of discs in a regular garage requires expensive equipment. This is a sandblasting machine necessary for thoroughly removing the remnants of the old coating and perfectly leveling the surface. You will also need a heat chamber - after degreasing the surface, applying an anti-corrosion coating and powder coating, you will need to carry out heat treatment (“bake” it). If you do not do this constantly, then in a private garage it is very difficult to provide, properly equip and carry out this technological cycle. Therefore, let's look at a simpler option available in a regular garage - painting wheels using acrylic paints.

Surface preparation
Before degreasing and , the surface of the disk should be prepared: clean off old paint coating. Wash the disc thoroughly using a brush and suitable detergent, to old paint left quickly. Then we begin to work with sandpaper: carefully, for a long time and monotonously sand the entire surface of the disk without exception. First coarse, then finer and the finest at the end. At the final stage, it is recommended to frequently water the surface to be treated in order to achieve better polishing and wash away any remaining sanded material.
Because We are not painting a new disc; in any case, it has various chips, defects and dents on the rim. To eliminate them we use automotive finishing putty. After it dries, we go through it again with fine sandpaper, pouring water on top.
Primer
After the surface is prepared, we move on to the next stage of work - priming. Before doing this, do not forget to degrease the cleaned surface with a solvent. We begin to apply the primer first from the inner surface of the disk, then move to the outer surface. Before spraying, do not forget to shake the can thoroughly, and repeat this procedure from time to time. Work slowly, making sure that the primer is evenly applied to the prepared surface. Keep the can of primer at a distance of 25-30 cm from the surface. Let the surface dry thoroughly and apply another coat or two, allowing time to dry. To make the drying process go faster, you need to consider airflow. Suitable for this construction hair dryer or, as a last resort, your wife’s regular hair dryer. In any case, it is better to start painting the next day so that the primer is completely dry.
Painting and varnishing
Well, the surface of the disc is primed and dried, which means you can proceed directly to painting and varnishing. It is advisable to choose paint and varnish from the same manufacturer and read the instructions before use. The technology of these processes is similar to the priming procedure. It is better to paint on a spread piece of polyethylene or fabric to avoid dust getting on the surface to be painted. Apply 2-3 layers of paint at intervals of 10-15 minutes and 2 layers of clear varnish at the same interval. After applying the first coat of varnish, check the surface for unevenness and, if necessary, sand with sandpaper or abrasive paste. Wait about a week for the painted and varnished disc to dry completely. Polish the finished disc with a special polish - this is not necessary, but it is very effective.
During the painting process, do not forget about the spare wheel. If you are not satisfied with the end result, do not be discouraged, repeat everything again. You have gained invaluable experience, and you now know how to paint wheels, avoiding mistakes.
