What does a barbecue with electric drive of skewers look like? Homemade spit

Electric drives

When cooking over an open fire or coals, we often encounter the fact that the meat is already beginning to burn on the outside, while the inside remains raw. The process can be controlled by adjusting the distance to the heat, constantly piercing the meat with a sharp object to determine the degree of its readiness. It is much easier to acquire an electric drive for a spit.

IN household appliances such a device is built in initially. In gas and electric stoves, ovens and grills, which may include a spit, have an electric drive for rotation. Most often, such equipment is equipped with a lateral electric drive.

Such a device may not be available. In this case, it is advisable to have a separate one, which will ensure continuous rotation of the metal rod.

Types of electric drives for spits

Among these devices, there are several varieties. The simplest of them is the unregulated drive. It is designed for start and stop operation only and rotates in single speed mode only. More expensive models are equipped with adjustable models professional equipment. With its help, you can change the rotation speed, and in some - adjust the distance to the heat and other parameters.

Also distinguished automated And manual devices. Using the former, you can set the time and rotation speed, speed, periods of operation and stops. The main difference between the models is the ability to work offline.

The spit itself is attached to the electric drive either through a special connector or using tongs. The first option is inconvenient because it usually has an unregulated diameter and shape, i.e. it cannot be used for any other type of metal rod. It is usually sold complete with a specific skewer. For example, you will need a bayonet less than a centimeter thick, and if you want to taste it, it is difficult to use a rod 1.5 centimeters thick for such a device to prepare it.

Do-it-yourself electric drive for spit

If you wish, you can make an autonomous electric drive with your own hands. You can use motors from old household appliances:

  • slabs;
  • microwave ovens;
  • ovens;
  • electric kebab makers.

In addition to this, you will have to find a gearbox, without which it is impossible to convert torque into the required efficiency. It is recommended to cover the entire set in fireproof material to prevent the winding from catching fire.

An electric spit is an indispensable addition to a pleasant outdoor recreation. With its help, you can forget about culinary chores by the fire and completely devote yourself to your favorite pastimes!

Automatic spit for barbecues with engine designed for both autonomous use in hiking conditions, in the forest, on the shore of a lake, the engine can be powered by a regular 12-volt battery, and in the absence of one, you can use a special handle and rotate the spit, with a lamb carcass attached to it, by hand using the appropriate force, and in stationary conditions at home, at the dacha, using a regular 220 volt outlet as a power source for the electric motor for the spit. This engine can operate either from a battery or from a 220 volt network via an adapter. The design of this spit is quite compact, the volume is approximately equal to the volume of two shoe boxes, and the weight is 6.5 kg. The volume is 0.02 cubic meters. Motor power 50 watts. The spit itself is 160 centimeters long, consists of two parts, the diameter of the spit is 22mm. The spit can be adjusted both in terms of installation height, using two hooks on the stands, and by extending these stands from the persistent tripod. The delivery set also includes two clamping forks and clamps, between which the product required for cooking is clamped. If a whole carcass of, say, a lamb is being cooked on a spit, then the hind legs can be secured to a special lever with two clamps, coaxially installed on the spit along with clamping forks, which helps to better secure the carcass on the spit. The delivery set also includes a special bracket for attaching the carcass spine to the skewer. When installing a carcass on a spit, a bracket is pierced from the outside in the middle of the spine between the ribs and the bracket is secured inside the carcass with two fastening wings, through a plate with two holes. After which the lamb's spine is pulled motionless to the spit, it does not unbend, and the carcass becomes elongated along the spit. The more the carcass resembles a cylinder, the more uniform the roasting.

All of the above parts are made of high-quality stainless steel, when assembled they are quite compact, will not take up much space in your car and will help you have a good rest in nature in the forest and in the country.

After a little modernization, this spit can be installed permanently in stone or metal barbecues, large barbecue complexes with a barbecue.

Cooking on fresh air is becoming more and more popular. There is a grill or barbecue in almost every summer cottage. And if barbecue is enough traditional method cooking meat, the use of a spit remains rare. This part allows you to fry large pieces of meat and even whole carcasses. It’s not at all difficult to build such a device for a barbecue with your own hands.

Choosing the right rod is half the success

Before making a spit and all the accessories for it, you need to prepare the material for work and decide on its length and shape.

Mostly flat, square and round shapes are used. It all depends on what products. Boneless meat or minced meat will be difficult to roast on a round spit because it will slip off. It is more convenient to fry shish kebab and small pieces on a flat rod. In order to cook a whole carcass without any problems, it is best to take square shape. The meat will not slide off such a spit and will be able to cook evenly on all sides.

The base of the skewer is a metal bayonet, and right choice material for it is a guarantee of successful use. For a bayonet, you should not choose low-melting alloys or use an old rod from scrap metal. The best decision- stainless steel. In addition, to create a spit you will need:

  1. Handle for spit.
  2. Roulette.
  3. Bulgarian.
  4. Metal rods.
  5. Pliers.
  6. Welding machine.

Making a spit

Before you make a spit with your own hands, you need to decide on its length and diameter. For cooking small pieces of meat, a 7 mm thick rod is suitable. To fry the carcass of a small animal, a device made of a rod from 9 to 11 mm is suitable. If you plan to cook large pieces of meat, you should prepare a rod with a diameter of 12 to 16 mm. As for the length, the spit for the grill is made the same length as the grill itself.

If there is no barbecue, then you should build a kind of stand that will be installed above the fire. A spit with a carcass is placed on it. For this purpose, the metal rods must have the same length, so that the load is distributed evenly. 4 prepared rods should be welded 2 crosswise. You will get grooves that will allow you to conveniently and firmly install the spit over the fire.

Drawing of a spit for a barbecue: minimum dimensions.

There is one important detail What distinguishes a spit from a regular skewer is the handle. It helps turn the meat over for even cooking. It can be made from any available material. You can use a regular door or bicycle handle, or a piece of pipe that can be shaped into a convenient shape for use.

The handle should be welded to the main structure of the spit. If there is nothing suitable at hand, then the bent end of the rod can become a handle. The main thing is to create leverage. Thanks to this, the cook will be able to easily twist a rod of any shape, and the cooking process will take place without additional physical effort. You should carefully consider the size of this rod. The cook's hands should be at a safe distance from the hot flame. Therefore, the piece of rod that will protrude beyond the limiters must be at least 1 m in length.

The final stage in the construction of the spit is equipping it with teeth that will hold the meat. On industrially manufactured skewers, these teeth are made with a clamp and are removable to make it convenient to mount the carcass. For a structure that is built with your own hands, one pair of teeth is made from metal rods. They should be bent with an arc and welded to the base. The teeth are firmly secured at the “blunt” end at a distance of 1/3 of the length. The skewer is ready. Now at the dacha there will be not only a barbecue built with your own hands, but also accessories for it.

An electric broiler for skewers will help make your outdoor recreation relaxed and comfortable. It’s easy to buy such a device in a store, but it’s better to remake a regular grill by adding an electric motor to it, which will turn the meat and ensure even cooking.

Tools

In this article we will talk about improving a regular barbecue. To do this yourself, you need the following tools:

  • electric motor;
  • electric drill;
  • Bulgarian;
  • drive pulley;
  • drive belt, you can use a bicycle chain, but in this case there will be sprockets instead of pulleys;
  • gears (their number is equal to the number of skewers).

For example, a motor from a windshield washer device in a car or a drive for rotating wipers is used as a motor. In principle, any similar 12 V motor will do, no matter left or right rotation.

If you use a 220 V motor, the electric grill will not be as mobile, and there will also be a risk of injury electric shock. The rotation speed will also be too high. The 12 V motor is powered even from a small motorcycle battery. Gears can be purchased at the store or cut out from stainless steel yourself.

Making a brazier

For those who do not have a barbecue to remodel, we will briefly describe how to make one with your own hands. To assemble the electric fryer you will need metal sheets– component parts about 3 mm thick, which are marked and cut out with a grinder.

Scheme for making a barbecue

  1. All plates are clamped in a vice in turn.
  2. At the very bottom of the wall, holes with a diameter of 10 mm are drilled at a distance of 3 cm from each other. They are needed for traction, thanks to which the coals will produce heat.
  3. Holes are also drilled in the bottom, but with a smaller interval. Their function is to get rid of excess ash.
  4. The barbecue body is welded from the resulting blanks.
  5. Finally, the legs are welded.

In the upper part of the electric fryer, grooves are cut to rotate the skewers, the distance between which is equal to the width of the gear with a tolerance of 0.5 cm.

Installing the engine on the grill

Installation of the elements of the skewers rotation system takes place in the following sequence:

  1. Motor.
  2. Gears.
  3. Chain.
  4. Power source (battery).

Next, a gearbox is mounted, which reduces the rotation speed on the skewers and transmits force from the motor to the gears. Initially, a pulley or drive sprocket is installed on the motor shaft (in the case of a chain drive). The driven gear, pulley or sprocket must be much larger in diameter to reduce the skewers' rotational speed to an acceptable level.

The entire system (engine, gearbox and gears) is mounted on a plate that already contains a shaft with bearings. The motor is mounted with outside barbecue using a bolted connection.

The chain is tensioned only when the product is completely completed.

Manufacturing of gear system

The assembly sequence is as follows:

  1. Initially, install the first gear.
  2. The second is installed on the body and connected to the motor with a chain.
  3. Next, attach the third (also on the wall of the grill).
  4. The fourth and subsequent gears are attached in the same way.

A professional product made by an experienced craftsman

The engine, starting to work, rotates the first gear mounted on the shaft, which, in turn, through a chain, belt or teeth (depending on the design) transmits rotation to the second gear, which to the third, and so on. Thus, the skewers with meat turn at the same speed.

Methods for transmitting rotation of skewers:

  1. Connect all the gears with a chain (in this case there is no need for contact between them, but the chain must be long enough).
  2. Install the drive only between the electric motor and the first gear mounted on the shaft, where the belt or chain will be put on (in this case, fairly wide sprockets are used - 3-4 mm, with minimal play, to prevent slipping when engaging with each other).

After the gears are mounted, tension the drive chain. By changing the size of the drive sprocket or shaft, the required rotation speed of the skewers is achieved.

Important! After installing the gears on an electric grill, for safety reasons it is necessary to hide the moving parts with a protective plate.

Making a spit and skewers

Before you start making these devices, think about what parameters they should have. A skewer and a skewer are different instruments for cooking food. The first is used for cooking whole carcasses, for example, big fish, pork leg, duck, etc., the second is for frying small pieces of meat.

The length of the spit should be 15 cm greater than the width of the grill, and the thickness should be approximately 15 mm. This product will even withstand a pig carcass.

The skewer is made up to 10 mm wide (depending on the size of the pieces of meat that are planned to be fried). For small slices, 6 mm is enough, but for large ones (for example, a whole chicken), this width is not enough.

The shape of the skewer can be different:

  1. Round.
  2. Flat.
  3. Corner.
  4. Square.

For the smallest pieces of meat, flat rods are used. Square ones are suitable for minced meat; this shape prevents them from slipping. Round skewers are not very convenient; the meat easily slides off them and also turns during frying.

For convenience, the spit is equipped with teeth that securely fix the animal carcass and prevent rotation. Making such a device with teeth in the form of arcs or triangles is not difficult, the main thing is not to overdo it, otherwise threading meat onto an electric spit will be difficult.

Rotation of skewers - tedious and monotonous work, which cannot be interrupted, so as not to end up with coals on the skewers instead of shish kebab. The idea to create a grill with electric skewers appeared a long time ago.

Various technical developments have evolved over time into a design consisting of a 12V electric motor and a drive consisting of a chain of gears or a belt drive that allows all the rods to rotate simultaneously.

Make an electric grill with your own hands - not difficult, you just need to understand its design.

Dimensions

Before you start making an electric grill with your own hands, you need to decide on its size. This important point, since it determines what kind of engine is needed for such a design. Large system with rotating skewers will require a certain power: the greater the number of moving units, the greater the losses and the shorter the engine life. Sometimes it is convenient to slightly change the design and make a spit for the barbecue with your own hands, which rotates only one axis, but can accommodate large quantity meat.

Do it yourself

You can purchase a ready-made automatic grill, but they, as a rule, are either stationary and powered by a 220 V network, or have too few skewers. In order to obtain a design that meets the user's needs, it is necessary to manufacture electric grill with your own hands. The easiest way is to modify an existing grill by installing an electric motor with a drive for skewers.

It is necessary to acquire the necessary materials and tools and get to work.

Required Tools

To create a barbecue with automatically rotating skewers you will need:

  • Electric motor.
  • Grinder with cutting and grinding wheels.
  • Electric drill.
  • Pulleys, sprockets or gears in required quantity(according to the number of skewers and gears of the gearbox, if any).
  • Drive belt, bicycle chain (depending on the selected drive system).

Selection of electric motor

The best option is electric motor with 12 V power supply, which has sufficient power to rotate the skewers, but does not require an excessively capacious power source. It can be connected to the vehicle's on-board network and used rechargeable batteries etc. You can use a motor from different devices, such as:

  • Electric grill.
  • Electric spit.
  • Car window regulators or wipers.
  • Microwaves.
  • Cordless screwdrivers, etc.
The use of motors with a 220 V power supply deprives the grill of autonomy and precludes its use when traveling outdoors, so we will not consider this option.

Drive assembly

Skewers are inserted into special slots. On one side, they are sockets into which skewers are inserted from above; on the opposite side, they are grips for skewer rings installed on the axis of gears or drive pulleys. There are many drive design options:

  • A bicycle chain with a drive sprocket on the motor axle and a row of driven sprockets on the skewer axles.
  • A drive belt passed in a zigzag pattern through a series of drive pulleys and a drive pulley on the motor axle.
  • The drive gear transmits rotation to the chain of gears along the axes of the skewers.
The latter option is more reliable - it does not create excessive load on the pulleys, so it is used most often.

Do you need an electric drive for skewers?

There are mechanical barbecues in which the rotation of all skewers at once produced from one axis. A handle is installed on it, with the help of which the working rods are set in motion. The design is convenient due to its independence from power supply, but it requires constant human presence. An electric drive for a barbecue frees up a person, giving him the opportunity to do other things or just relax with friends.

Electric drive installation

Electric drive installation includes several actions:

  1. Installing the electric motor on the product frame.
  2. Creation of a chain of gears (pulleys, sprockets) transmitting rotational motion to each other.
  3. Installing the drive belt or chain.
Application different types transmission somewhat changes the specifics of the actions performed, but the general order of work is not disrupted.

Instructions for making a chain of gears

The first gear is the drive gear, it is installed on the motor shaft. It connects to the 2nd gear, to which all the others are connected in series. It is not recommended to disturb the installation order and place the gears out of order; this can interfere with the ease of movement and create unnecessary load. Unlike the pulley or sprocket system from bicycle chain, the gears are all in mesh, so they require the same sequential installation.

Preparing the skewer

In parallel with the manufacture of an electric drive, the question often arises - how to make a spit for a barbecue with your own hands. Unlike a skewer, a spit is designed for roasting large pieces of meat (for example, a pig carcass). Therefore, it needs a sufficient lifting height above the coals and a larger working part width. Typically, the spit is installed in the transverse direction, which allows you to expand the heating zone to the entire working part. It is necessary to install a separate motor with a connecting device for the working rod, and on the opposite side it is necessary to attach a mating part that supports the free end.

Successful examples and options

Usually to the appearance of barbecues special requirements can not be. However, there are often people who are no less demanding when it comes to device design. For them, the important question is how to make a grill that fully matches the design summer cottage or having some specific shape. There are a large number of examples and options on the Internet. appearance barbecues made in different styles and forms.

You need to choose the most suitable option for yourself before you start making an electric grill, so as not to redo the finished product due to some inconsistencies.

Advantages and disadvantages

To the advantages electric grill should be classified as:

  • There is no need for constant attention to the condition of the kebabs.
  • The juice released from the meat does not flow onto hot coals, forming carcinogenic compounds, but evenly wets the surface of the pieces.
  • Uniform cooking of meat on all sides.
  • IN winter time there is no need to freeze near the grill.
  • If you need to cook for a large number of guests, the work can be put on stream.

To the disadvantages can be attributed:

  • The need for rechargeable batteries.
  • Using an electric motor requires certain safety precautions.
  • The frying mode at a certain rotation speed requires skill and experience; at first, the kebab may turn out to be undercooked.

Users note that habit and some skill appear quite quickly, but not everyone succeeds the first time.

What does the design look like?

Exists a lot of design options, types of drive, design and design of barbecues. Externally, such a product does not differ too much from the usual type of barbecue, but the presence of a motor and gear system immediately reveals electric version designs.
