Plastic accordion doors disassembly and assembly diagram. How to install an accordion door with your own hands - video. Preparing the doorway for installation - what needs to be done at this stage

Sections of the article:

It’s very nice to be able to show your apartment or house to guests and proudly declare that any item from the interior was made or installed by yourself. Undoubtedly, quality work inspires and fills with well-deserved pride. However, wanting to install a folding door in their home, many are afraid to take on such a seemingly difficult job. However detailed information How to install an accordion door will help even a person who is not very familiar with carpentry to do all the work efficiently. The main conditions for this are persistence and attentiveness.

Materials of manufacture and design

Not so long ago, an accordion door was considered an attribute of small-sized doorways. However, thanks to the efforts of designers this design It not only allows you to significantly save space in your home, but is also a worthy element of the interior, and sometimes even its decoration. Thus, in the market of door designs, accordion doors can have the widest range of colors and design styles. In addition, various materials can be used in the creation process, the main ones being MDF sheets or plastic.

Installing an accordion door made of natural wood is quite a rare occurrence. This fact is explained by the significant weight wooden structure, which fasteners cannot always withstand. To ensure a sufficient level of rigidity, the product is fixed in a profiled frame made of steel or aluminum.

The dimensions of the product are not strictly defined, so the height of the structure can be 2050, 2500 and even 3000 mm. The width of the blade varies from a minimum value of 600 mm. Moreover, both the number of sashes and the principle of their execution directly depend on the wishes of the buyer or designer. Thus, the doors can be solid, or with various inserts in the form of glazing, stained glass compositions and other decorative elements.

Standard equipment

The installation process of accordion doors can be done by self-made products, or after purchasing a complete set of necessary parts, including accessories. The standard set of accordion door elements includes:

  • Guide rail in the form of a metal profile;
  • Doors, each of which has special hinges that make it possible to fasten them to each other;
  • Roller carriages that directly move the web;
  • Special keys for adjusting fasteners;
  • Fastening elements;
  • Accessories.

Aluminum is most often used as a material for the manufacture of guides. In case of engineering need, the lower and upper rails can be used simultaneously. In this case, the main emphasis of the weight of the structure falls on the lower fastenings and the floor. The upper elements serve to ensure the verticality of the canvas. However, most often the product is attached only to the top rail.

In some cases, the kit also includes locking elements, but most often they must be purchased separately, along with the extensions and trims.

Making a door with your own hands

If desired, the manufacture and installation of an accordion door can be done independently. In this situation, in the absence of significant experience, it is important to follow the instructions. The most difficult process is the selection of suitable fittings. It is much easier and more effective to purchase a set that most harmoniously matches with color scheme canvases and general interior premises.

To make the sashes you will need Construction Materials in the form of MDF sheets with laminated coating. Using chipboard slabs are unacceptable for accordion doors, because physical qualities materials do not meet the necessary requirements.

It should be remembered that installing an accordion door with your own hands requires a certain set of components:

  • Guide profiles or blanks for them;
  • Axial locking elements and rods;
  • A set of roller mechanisms for all sliding sashes. If the product is installed with a lower guide, the number of carriages is doubled;
  • MDF sheets with special overlapping edge;
  • Set of screws, hinges and door handles;
  • Wood glue. The most suitable for making accordion doors are “Moment” and “Titan”.

To install hinge mechanisms, it is necessary to trim special grooves for the mechanism plates. In this case, the depth, length and width of the cut must correspond to the dimensions of the plates. Installation of door handles is carried out according to technology and depending on the type of product.

Sash manufacturing process

After all necessary calculations MDF sheets are marked on the sashes, followed by cutting out the panels. The end part of each sash requires processing and alignment. For this, sandpaper is used, which allows not only to smooth out unevenness, but also to remove dust and other foreign particles.

Workpieces after partial processing sandpaper pasted over with an edge along the end part. For high-quality sizing, the product must be pressed and left fixed for 12 hours. After this time, each sash is carefully checked for the quality of sizing. After this, it is allowed to mark the sashes for installing hinges.

Installation of the finished product

The principle of operation according to which the accordion door is installed is strictly step by step process. To get acquainted with it in more detail, go to clear example It is worth referring to various videos explaining the essence of the work. Also, when purchasing a ready-made installation kit, it must be equipped with detailed instructions.

The installation process itself begins with securing the profile element. It is worth remembering that this part must be equipped with a special latch in advance. If necessary, when the profile has a larger width than the opening itself, this element cut and mounting holes for screws are drilled in it. In this case, the pitch between the holes is maintained at 250-300 mm.

The latch is attached from the opposite side to the opening. After this, the axial part of the end flap is placed in it, which must be inserted into the guide grooves of the roller mechanism runner. The next stage includes fastening special upper and lower axial metal rods into holes prepared in advance for this. If the product does not contain holes at the time of purchase, you must drill them yourself.

During the installation of accordion doors, being at the preparation stage mounting holes, it is important to ensure that their depth is not greater than the size of the axial rod. It is required that this element extends slightly beyond the main line. In this case, it is better to navigate in size according to data from official instructions to the delivery set.

After the final fastening of all elements at the verification stage, all axes and their fasteners must be located parallel to each other in both horizontal and vertical positions.

Installation of the receiving plate is carried out in the lower section doorway in the corner area. Before this, its exact location must be determined based on the location of the latch. To fasten the runner device, a suitable hole is prepared. Moreover, the procedure must be carried out quite carefully, since this sliding device is responsible for the process of adjusting the accordion door after it is installed independently.

Assembly of the canvas

When installing an accordion door, one of the most labor-intensive and time-consuming processes is assembling all the doors of the structure together. To carry out this procedure, it is necessary to initially mark all the points of future attachment points for hinge mechanisms. In this case, it is advisable to place all elements strictly on the same level. To make the task easier, all existing sashes are laid out on a flat surface in the required order.

After installing all the sashes on the outermost mobile panel, marking and preparation of a groove for installation are carried out door handle. In this case, unlike doors of a classic type, the handle is mounted as close as possible to the area where the hinges are placed.

Process Features

To ensure high-quality and durable operation of the product, before assembling and installing the accordion door in the existing opening, it is necessary to take into account several important features, also indicated in numerous videos. These include:

  • There is a slight difference in the structure of the initial and final doors. Therefore, during assembly, you should carefully inspect the parts so as not to confuse them;
  • In all sashes, except those located at the edges, marking and installation of hinge mechanisms in the amount of 3 pieces is carried out;
  • Checking the uniformity of hinge fastening. On each of the valves, the distance between them should be the same;
  • All loops of the product must follow one horizontal line for each of the three levels. If this requirement is not met, the canvas will almost immediately be skewed;
  • In the process of combining fabric parts, it is important to adhere to regulatory standards. technological gap in 3 mm.

Installation of the canvas

After the product is assembled, the stage of hanging the pre-placed fasteners begins. Before installing the accordion door, all existing doors are brought into the folded position. For additional fixation, special iron axial rods are used, inserted into the grooves of the plates. After this, it is important to ensure rigid fixation of the axis of the final panel runners.

If it is necessary to loosen or tighten the nuts in the end carriages or on the axial fastenings, use the adjusting wrench that comes complete with ready-made door sets. It is also used to set the mode of opening and closing the canvas.

When installing an accordion door, there are several important features to consider about these folding structures:

  • When using sashes made of natural wood or when covering a passage with a structure that is quite wide by standard standards, it is necessary to increase the number of carriages;
  • A heavy door, to ensure operational safety and durability of the product, is installed on the lower rail, with an additional corrective upper one.

General operating principle and appearance of folding doors

Externally, accordion doors are lamellas of different widths, usually from 10–15 cm, which are connected to each other using hinges. When assembled, they resemble blinds. Another main difference between them and swing doors is the presence of guides, usually upper, less often lower. In addition to standard accordion doors with slats in the form of blinds, there are other models on the market that are no less popular. For example, accordion or “book” doors of 2 sections. Due to the smaller number of folding elements, this design is considered more reliable and less likely to jam, which is typical for cheap multi-section plastic accordions. Smooth sliding along the guides is ensured by movable slider rollers, and fixation of the canvas in the selected position is ensured by stopper flags.

Standard configurations consist of 3–4 sections, and can also be equipped with additional sections if it is necessary to expand the doorway. There is an opinion that accordion doors look cheap and do not fit well with the interior. The usual folding curtain doors made of plastic really look like this, but options made of wood, glass and aluminum, on the contrary, are presented in a wide range of models. IN construction stores can also be found combined options with stained glass windows, metal and wooden frames, all glass sliding structures. Here everything depends on your taste preferences, financial capabilities and the width of the doorway.

A little about door materials, their advantages and disadvantages

Let's start with analysis plastic structures.According to the principle of assembly and fastening to the wall, such structures are as follows:

  • assembled on one side and inserted into the guides;
  • disappear into the wall, the doors go into a niche plasterboard construction, which is pre-installed;
  • made in the form of a book, assembled from two canvases of the same size, which are moved apart in one movement.

When purchasing folding doors made from PVC panels, consider the following features: the fastening between the panels is also made of plastic. Therefore, the fewer lamellas, the greater the strength and service life of the structure. PVC doors help to delimit space, but they are not capable of insulating a room from noise and cold. When installing such doors, you should strictly adhere to horizontal position and double-check the accuracy of the level several times. Otherwise, the misalignment will create increased load on the roller mechanism, stoppers and hinges, which will lead to rapid wear and failure.

Instead of sliding structures made of plastic, experts recommend wooden analogues. To ensure that the sliding door is not heavy, soft wood, such as pine, is used for its manufacture. Sections of canvases are connected to each other not by soft hinged profiles, but by hinges of a hidden or open type. Instead of natural wood, MDF panels with a blank facade or glass and metal inserts are used to make canvases. In order not to worry about the shrinkage of solid wood panels, we recommend purchasing doors made from glued timber. If you want to fill the room with light and expand the space, you can use an accordion. They can be made entirely of glass or with metal and wood inserts.

If we put together the advantages of high-quality folding doors, we can highlight the following advantages:

  • visual expansion of space;
  • saving room space by moving the canvas across the opening;
  • lightness of doors design features;
  • ease of installation;
  • wide variety of models in design and price.

Among the disadvantages of such interior doors are the lack of proper heat and sound insulation, the fragility of multi-section and cheap plastic structures, and rapid failure with intensive use and careless handling.

Preparing the doorway for installation - what needs to be done at this stage?

Before installing the accordion door, quite often the old door frames are not dismantled. On the one hand, this simplifies the installation process and reduces the time required to carry out additional work. However old box was collected under old door with a different type of construction, it takes up a lot of the usable width of the opening, which is required for installing the guides. Therefore, we recommend dismantling the old door frame, and also knocking down the layer of old plaster down to the base (concrete, brick). Only after such preparation do we take measurements of the opening and purchase the desired model of a folding door.

In order not to increase or, on the contrary, reduce the opening, try to select models that are as close as possible to the size of your opening. We install doors at the final stage of repair, when the finishing work is completely completed. Let's start assembling a new one door frame no threshold. We saw off the rack parts of the box with gaps of 3 mm at the top and 10 mm at the bottom. We saw off the upper part of the posts at an angle of 45°. To make the corner smooth without distortions, use miter saw. As a last resort, if you don’t have such a tool at hand, use a regular saw or grinder and a square. We saw off the lower part of the stand at a right angle. We perform similar operations with the second rack. If the design of your folding door involves hanging hinges on the door frame, for example, when installing a book-type wooden panel, we make seats for card hinges and attach one part of the hinges to self-tapping screws. Pre-drill holes for screws. This will prevent the wood from chipping and cracking. To connect the side parts of the box to each other, we use a crossbar, sawing it off on both sides at an angle of 45°. When calculating the length of the crossbar, we take into account the gaps between the door frame and the wall of 1 cm on each side.

We assemble the finished parts of the door frame on a flat surface. To connect, we drill holes for self-tapping screws diagonally in the upper part of the structure. We do this using a drill with a diameter of 2–2.5 mm. It is more convenient to drill holes for self-tapping screws with a countersink. This will allow the screws to penetrate deeper and fix in the box. From each end of the upper corners of the box we drill two diagonal holes for self-tapping screws. After preparing the holes, screw the screws into them.

We mount the prepared box in the doorway. We insert spacer bars and wedges 1 cm thick between the door frame and the wall. This will allow us to fix the position of the door frame and prevent it from slipping during fastening. Using dowel screws, we fix the position of the box in the opening. There should be at least 4-5 fasteners on each side. We seal the gaps between the door frame and the wall with polyurethane foam and wait until it hardens. In the meantime, let's get acquainted with step by step instructions assembling the accordion doors specified by the manufacturer and carry out necessary work on assembly.

Basic instructions for assembling and installing accordion doors

After installing the door frame, we begin further work by preparing the main guide profile, which is included in the kit. To adjust it to the dimensions we need, we measure the width of the doorway, which was obtained after installing the door frame, and measure this distance on the profile, make a mark and cut off the excess with a miter box. We perform similar operations with the guides on the sides, if they are provided for in the installation of your door. After adjusting the guides to the dimensions of your opening, we first apply them without fastening, and see if we have measured everything accurately. Now we drill holes for the screws in the guides. The step between the fasteners should be 15–20 cm. Knowing the distance between the fasteners, we determine the total number of screws. We drill holes for them with a diameter of 3 mm.

The guides are installed. We move on to preparing the lamellas or sheets, depending on the design of your accordion. We measure the height of the opening and cut off the excess part of the strips. At the same time, do not forget to take into account the gap of 5–8 mm under the door, which is necessary for ventilation. When cutting the canvas or lamellas, carefully measure everything again, and also read in more detail the recommendations of the manufacturer of your accordion model. Remember, when closing the door, it should fully reach the opposite door without a gap.

Now let's move on to assembling the doors. Here again everything depends on the model and design you choose. Let's look at the two most common examples - classic lamellas made of plastic or MDF and an accordion like a book of two sections. Plastic strips are connected to each other using grooves, and from MDF - through a longitudinal axis, which passes through the eyes of each lamella. Book-type canvases of two or more sections are usually made of natural wood or MDF. They are connected to each other using loops. They can be either hidden or end-mounted. We have already talked in more detail about attaching hinges in step by step wizard class pro. Before fixing the hinges, the holes for the screws also need to be drilled.

We insert slider rollers into the guide profile and fix them. We hang the assembled door. We roll the canvas to the end and tighten all the fasteners, install the stoppers. We finally fix the side guides and screw the assembled sheet to the left or right edge of the profile. On the opposite side from the blind side we attach a handle and a lock to the canvas. Let's check the mechanism in action.

The final stage of work is the installation of platbands. As in the case of the box, we cut off the edges of the crossbar and the upper parts of the racks at 45°. You can attach platbands different ways. Most often, regular or liquid nails are used. The second option provides a more reliable fixation, but subsequently dismantling such platbands is quite problematic. As you can see, installing an accordion is not so difficult; the main thing is to adhere to the manufacturer’s recommendations and general rules.

Modern models of accordion doors are not only an element for dividing space, but also an effective component of design. They are made from various materials, issued in different styles, which is clearly demonstrated by the photos. They sell doors with a set of fastenings and spare parts. The installation can be carried out by representatives of the company, but after reading our step-by-step instructions, watching a thematic video and reading reviews, you will understand that assembling the door with your own hands is not difficult.

What are accordion sliding doors?

Accordion doors are a system consisting of individual vertical slats from 10 to 15 cm wide, connected into one sheet using small strong loops. Visually they look like corrugated blinds.

The guide to which all panels are attached, as a rule, is located at the top, less often, but still there is another option - the bottom location. If there is a wide doorway, install an accordion door consisting of 2 panels. When open, all elements fold together like accordion bellows. Smooth movement and parallelism of the elements in relation to each other are ensured by special synchronizers. Fixation of the canvas in the required position is carried out using stoppers-flags.

Usually the design includes 3-4 sections, but in case of a non-standard doorway, manufacturers complete the door with additional panels. main feature doors - save space, which is especially important for small rooms, where even an extra area of 1 m² makes a difference.

It can't be said that sliding doors accordion looks organically in any interior. But if the choice is made correctly, then the premises acquire personality traits. Moreover, you can buy not only a solid door, but also one with inserts: glass, stained glass, metal frames. Designs can even be completely mirror or glass. Among them there are models that are controlled automatically.

Attention: accordion doors made of glass, wood, MDF are quite heavy, therefore the load on the roller structure is corresponding, and this affects the service life. Plastic accordions are lightweight and last a long time.

Plastic accordion folding doors

There are several types of plastic “accordions” and each of them differs in its design:

  • The door leaf is assembled on one side. When installing this version of the door, the composite leaf is inserted into a pair of guides.
  • A structure hidden in the wall. In this case, the doors go into plasterboard wall, therefore, installation of this model is possible only with a special design.
  • Model like a book. There are only 2 sections of the same size, folding once.

Plastic accordion options have their own characteristics and should be taken into account when choosing:

  1. The connections between PVC strips are also made of plastic. Therefore, the fewer folding fragments, the longer the door will last.
  2. Plastic models have low heat and sound insulation, but they are good for highlighting individual zones.
  3. When mounting a plastic “accordion”, set the guides strictly horizontally, otherwise the hinges, roller mechanisms and feet will quickly wear out.

Wooden doors accordion

Light wood, usually pine, is used for manufacturing. Natural wood combined with glass inserts, MDF, stained glass. Due to the design features of the system, wooden sections They are thin, so they are not very heavy.

To secure the inserts, grooves are provided in the panels; they are additionally reinforced with glazing beads. Wooden “accordions” are used as interior partitions, partitions, and for dressing rooms.

The wooden frame of accordion doors has high aesthetic properties, in addition, it is more durable compared to other materials. In addition to solid wood, laminated veneer lumber is used to make the frame. It is lighter, and is not subject to shrinkage, and is not deformed, therefore, sliding design it is reliable, stable and practical.

The advantages of wooden accordion doors include:

  • functionality;
  • mobility;
  • noiselessness;
  • ease of installation;
  • decorativeness;
  • environmental friendliness.

The disadvantage is that they have low moisture resistance and are not as durable as their swing counterparts.

Main characteristics of glass, aluminum, PVC accordion doors

Glass accordion doors look impressive: light, stylish, filling the room with light. They look harmonious in classic interior, and in the very modern design. Made entirely of glass, they are a cross between a blind and a folding door.

Polyvinyl chloride plastic is an excellent material for accordion doors. It does not burn, is moisture resistant, and does not emit poisons when heated, so the door can be installed in any room.

Step-by-step instructions for assembling accordion doors

Assembling and installing accordion doors is easy. They come with fastenings and spare parts. TO expensive models Manufacturers make sure to add spare strips in case the door has to be extended. The installation process itself consists of the following steps:

Advice. When screwing in self-tapping screws, damage to the material often occurs. To avoid this, pre-drill the holes using a smaller drill bit and then install the fasteners.

Accordion doors are a wonderful alternative swing doors. They not only save space, but can also become the highlight of the interior.

The basic idea of almost any design solution in terms of decorating an apartment or house, this means separating rooms from each other and forming separate compositions inside each one. The most important element Naturally, interior doors are divisions of space. Now we will talk about how to install an accordion door with your own hands.

Until recently, most people associated this type of door with a cheap option for those situations when, in a small amount of housing, it is necessary to save and preserve every square meter space. In their modern form, accordion sliding doors are already a separate design element, and not a forced compromise. There are many different variations of accordion doors on the market with a wide variety of design styles. The basis for such doors can be either PVC or MDF strips. The differences are not even so obvious at first glance. In both cases appearance doors seems pleasant and harmonious.

Plastic is naturally much lighter and less susceptible to both damage and contamination. It is easy to clean and can last quite a long time. The downside is again its somewhat excessive lightness. After all, when using such a door, there is a certain feeling of its flimsiness. However, the latest versions of PVC slats are made with a more sophisticated system of stiffening ribs, so they only seem flimsy. In terms of installation plastic doors an accordion is somewhat easier. Firstly, the door elements are very easily clicked together manually and are easily adjusted in size to the required dimensions of the doorway. Secondly, setting up such doors is much easier, as well as correcting possible flaws during the installation process.

Doors made of MDF are already much more massive, and this affects their ease of use. This does not add any difficulties in opening and closing, but the noise insulation and stability of the door is clearly better than in the case of plastic. The installation of such doors is complicated mainly by the weight of the door and the need to especially strictly observe all levels and markings during installation. Among other things, MDF accordion doors should be secured much better.

What is required to install the door?

The doors themselves are sold with all the necessary spare parts and fastenings. In high-quality products, there are always several spare strips to be able to increase the width of the door.

typical configuration of an accordion sliding door.

From materials it is also necessary to purchase and prepare everything necessary to prepare the doorway itself. Any suitable extensions and platbands are suitable for this. It is only important that the thickness of the material is at least 15 mm in order to withstand the weight of the door and, accordingly, all the loads during operation.

The following tools and building materials will be needed:

  1. hammer drill;
  2. hammer drill (if you need to expand the existing doorway);
  3. roulette;
  4. plumb line and bubble level;
  5. construction corner;
  6. hacksaw;
  7. miter box;
  8. bars or wooden bowls;
  9. polyurethane polyurethane foam.

Preparing the doorway

You can, of course, mount an accordion door inside an existing door frame. However, this will significantly reduce the usable width of the opening. It is best to completely dismantle the old door along with the frame and knock down the mortar under them down to the base ( brickwork or concrete wall). After this, you can take measurements of the resulting opening and check the list of nominal door sizes for different numbers of elements. Such a list is included in the instructions for the door. It is only important to take into account the width of the extensions. As a result, it becomes clear: is it necessary to slightly widen the opening or, conversely, with the help of extensions, polyurethane foam and bars cut in size to the required parameter.

The prepared extensions are cut to form a box without a threshold. In this case, the upper crossbar is attached with its ends to the upper edge of the vertical extensions and fastened with self-tapping screws.

Important: In order not to damage the material, you should first drill holes in the place where the self-tapping screw is installed with a drill of a smaller diameter (2 mm) and only then screw in the self-tapping screws.

After the box is ready, it can be inserted into the doorway and secured with blocks and other wooden supports as wedges. For reliability, it is better to use several bars equal in width to the doorway, form spacers in the center and along the bottom edge so that the extensions do not bend during the installation process. To secure the extensions to the wall, long anchors are used, installed three on each side and at least two on top.

Once the anchors are tightened, you can foam the gap between the extensions and the wall. After the foam has dried, you can proceed directly to the installation of the sliding accordion door.

Installation of guides

In order not to make mistakes in the calculations, it is better to start with the installation of guides and other fasteners. The set of accordion door parts includes a guide profile. According to the instructions, the required length of the profile is measured and the excess is cut off. It is advisable to use a miter box to ensure a perfectly even cut.

In the same way, according to the instructions, a profile is cut to attach the blind part of the door and the counter on the side of the handle of the future door. After this, we check all the dimensions, but only by placing the profiles, without securing them. Holes for self-tapping screws are made in the profiles in advance. In the upper profile, holes with a diameter of 3 mm are drilled every 5-7 cm, and on the side profiles every 15-20 cm.

If the profile is designed for fastening using special clips, then you can already begin installing the clips around the perimeter of the doorway. Typically, the same clips are used for the top guide (rails) and the profile on which the blind part will be attached door leaf accordions. On the side where the finishing groove and magnetic lock will be installed, slightly different smaller clips are used.

The top guide should be strengthened so that the clips are located at a distance of approximately 5-7 cm from each other. On the sides, you can limit yourself to installing only 4 or 5 clips evenly in height.

Assembling the door leaf and mounting the rollers

All strips from which the door leaf will be made should be cut so that they fit in height. In this case, the reserve for the roller system on top, which is inserted into the rail, is taken into account. There should be a ventilation gap of approximately 7-10 mm at the bottom of the door, as is the case with any interior door.

How to assemble an accordion door is described in detail in the instructions supplied with it from the manufacturer. It is very important to comply with all the necessary assembly points, because different manufacturers have their own design features.

IN simple version The plastic strips of the door leaf are connected directly using grooves or using additional spacers. In this case, the two parts to be connected are shifted and connected at the edges, after which one part is pulled along the second to the end.

In the case of MDF, a method is often used in which the strips are connected using a long axle, which is threaded alternately through the eyes on each of their parts.

After all the elements are connected and the door leaf is completely assembled, you should place the rollers and other accessories that come with the kit. As in the previous case, everything is done strictly according to the instructions.

Final assembly and fastening

Now all that remains is to install the folding interior accordion door inside the prepared doorway. The door leaf is threaded with rollers into the guide profile. When all elements are inserted, the door folds and is located in the center of the profile. In this condition, it is most convenient to install the guide in the doorway.

final view of a typical accordion door assembly

If clips are used, the guide snaps onto them. If necessary, use a rubber mallet to securely click. In other options, self-tapping screws are used, which first fasten the rail along the edges, and then along the entire length every 5-7 cm.

The next step is to attach the side profiles and attach the blind part of the door leaf to the corresponding profile. At this stage, the ease of movement of the door and the tightness of its fit to the counter profile on the handle side are checked.

If everything is fine, then the handle is installed. When the door is closed, the location of the lock mate is marked and the latch with a magnet is screwed onto the door frame.

Completion of work

When everything is finally secured and checked, you can begin installing platbands around the perimeter of the doorway on both sides. Using a hacksaw and wort, excess parts of the trim are cut off at an angle of 45 degrees, limiting their length. The platbands can be attached using either liquid nails or special furniture nails with countersunk heads or without them at all.

Video: example of installing an accordion door

The doorway is an integral part of any room, and each apartment owner wants to decorate it in his own way. In fact, there are a lot of design options; some prefer to install regular wooden doors, and some are decorative or hardware. Nowadays in markets and stores you can often find beautiful models of doors called “accordion”. To install them, use special technology, which requires strict adherence to all rules and consistency, while high-quality installation of an accordion door is not difficult if you have all the materials.

Accordion doors are installed in places where it is not possible to install a regular door, these can be wide doorways, closets, etc.

Such a product should not only be functional, but also fit perfectly into the interior of the room. As a rule, interior doors can be of different sizes, colors and textures, so choosing the right product will not be difficult.

For small apartments, sliding compartment doors or accordion doors, which can be installed in any room, are considered a good option. The product is often installed in the living room, bedroom, kitchen or office. In addition, the plastic accordion door can be installed as a shower curtain. Following simple recommendations, installing an accordion door with your own hands will not be difficult.

What are the features?

  • It is important to note the significant space savings. Often you have to place furniture based on the location of doorways. It is unlikely that you will be able to place a closet, sofa or shelf nearby, since this will interfere with the opening of the door. As for the accordion, such problems do not arise.
  • The walls can be finished with any materials, since a sharply opened door will not damage the cladding with its handle.
  • Such doors are silent, they open smoothly, sliding along the guides.
  • Another important advantage is safety; children will not be able to pinch their finger, which cannot be said about conventional door designs. In addition, these doors open easily.
  • Reliable to use. Accordion doors may occasionally sag or warp. This only happens due to fluctuations in temperature and humidity. Perhaps many have noticed that in certain seasons of the year the sash opens or closes with difficulty, but this in no way applies to accordions.
  • Such products can be installed for any opening, even where a regular door is not suitable.

Equipment

Before installing the accordion door, you need to check the presence of all parts and fasteners.
So, the accordion door kit includes:

  • top rail in the form of an aluminum guide;
  • door panel;
  • 2 roller runners;
  • hinges for connecting panels;
  • adjusting key;
  • other elements and accessories for installation.

If doorway It has standard width equal to up to one meter, then it is not necessary to install a lower guide. In some cases, extensions and trims are not included in the kit, so they have to be purchased separately.

As a rule, doors are purchased with all necessary spare parts and fastenings. If the kit is of high quality and not cheap, then it will include spare hair for increasing the width of the door in the future.

In addition to the materials for installing the accordion door, you need to purchase preparation materials doorway. Any extensions and platbands with a thickness of at least 15 mm are suitable for these purposes.

You also need to prepare some tools, without which it is impossible to install such a door. So, you can’t do without an impact drill, a hammer drill, a tape measure, a plumb line and a bubble level, a construction angle, a hacksaw, a miter box, bars or wooden bowls, and polyurethane foam.

Features of doorway preparation

There are options for mounting an accordion door inside the door frame, but in this way it will not be possible to significantly save the usable width of the opening. In such cases, it is recommended to completely remove the old door and frame, knocking down the mortar underneath to the base of the wall.

After such actions, you can take measurements of the formed opening and determine the amount of material. The need is also determined additional expansion reduction of the doorway.

The prepared extensions need to be cut to form a box without a threshold. IN in this case the upper crossbar will be fixed with its end to the upper edge of the vertical extensions with self-tapping screws.

To prevent damage to the material, you must first drill holes at the screw installation points using thin drill, then screw them in.

After preparing the door frame, you can insert it into the doorway using bars and other wooden substrates as wedges. For better reliability It is recommended to use bars equal in width. Using them, spacers are formed in the center and along the lower edge. This is necessary so that the extensions do not sag during installation. To fix the extensions to the base, long anchors are used, which are installed three on each side and two on top.

After tightening the anchors, you can proceed to the process of foaming the gap between the extensions and the wall. When the foam is completely dry, install the door itself.

Installation of an accordion door

You need to measure the height and width of the doorway before purchasing the door. This is the only way to know the required number of panels in a sash. The folding door must be installed by fixing the guide.

For standard opening The width of the guide rail can vary between 33-35 cm, while its height can be 33-39 mm. If the width of this opening is less than the length of the guide, then the last element must be cut using a hacksaw for metal.

The distance between the holes and the guide should be approximately 25-30 cm. Using these holes, it is fixed at the top of the opening. If necessary, you need to drill new ones.

When opening the sash from right to left, you need to right side put a latch, the same will happen on the other side.

You need to insert the end panel axle into the latch and place the carriage slider in the rail. The guide is fixed to the upper area of the opening using self-tapping screws 20-30 mm long. After this, a metal axis is installed in the end sash at the top and bottom. To do this, you need to mark the position of the axes and drill holes for them, if there are none, and their depth should be less than the length of the axes.

It should be noted that the end of each axis will protrude slightly. The axes are fixed to the panel. As a general rule, the bottom and top axis should be aligned horizontally and vertically.

Under the axis located in the lower corner of the opening, you need to install a receiving plate, placing its position relative to the latch. At the upper end of the panel that was installed last, you need to drill holes where the slider will be attached. The accordion door panels must be placed side by side in the same way as they are intended to be connected with hinges. You need to be careful not to confuse the placement of the right and left panels. Next they move on to the stage of installing the door hinges. Using a pencil, you need to carefully place their location on the shutters, taking into account the required distance. It is recommended to place three hinges between the closest sashes, but not on the outer ones.

Horizontal placement of low, middle or upper level elements is provided. This pattern should be the same on all sashes. The slightest displacement should not be allowed, since distortions and subsequently cracks may appear on the panels.

Having marked the placement of each hinge with the same distance, both horizontally and vertically, you need to secure three hinges on one sash. They need to be inserted into back side. Adjacent panels must be connected in such a way that the distance between the mini panels is approximately 3 mm.

To install the handle on last panel you need to drill out the groove. It is installed on the outer panel near the loop connection. In addition, you need to drill a groove for the lock between the panels.

After this, you can hang the assembled sashes on the mounts. The structure rises and is inserted into metal axles, namely landing plates. Now you need to connect the carriage axis to the plate of the last sash. For these purposes, you need to use a key to adjust the position and movement of the door itself. The shutter is adjusted by tightening or loosening the nut on the end or carriage axle.

If the doorway is more than one meter, then more upper runners are needed to cover it. You will also need a support to adjust the door travel in the lower area of the opening. You cannot do without a bottom rail into which the wheels of the carriage mounted on one or two panels will be wound. The guide needs to be recessed into the floor or hidden under the threshold. It should be noted that dirt often accumulates in the channel, which is not completely cleaned out.

What could be the disadvantages of an accordion door?

Despite important advantages such door design, there are some disadvantages associated with using a large number of bearings and hinges, which can reduce the reliability of the door. If you buy an inexpensive product, then much attention should be paid to the choice of accessories. The service life of the door will depend on its quality.

Disadvantages also include poor sound and heat insulation. Closing the door tightly is very difficult to achieve. If you buy it to create silence in the room, then this is not a very suitable option.

It is better to install such doors in rooms with a small area. They effectively save useful space.
