Making a reverse hammer and do-it-yourself body repair. Reverse hammer. Types and work. Design and features Reverse hammer drawing with dimensions

Every driver who has at least once repaired his car himself knows what it is. reverse hammer. For those who hear this name for the first time, we will tell you in detail about this tool in this article.

The most important part in car body repair is leveling its surface. To straighten the body you need to have all the necessary tools. This includes a reverse hammer.

A reverse hammer for body repair is a metal pin measuring 50 cm in length and 2 cm in diameter. There are two elements on it: a rubber bushing and a metal washer. The washer holds the bushing and prevents vibrations from impacts from transferring to the hammer body.

Some reverse hammers may have hooks. With their help, the hammer grabs the staples welded to the body, holding on to it while leveling the surface of the car.

Kinds

Removing dents from car body parts that are difficult to access or requiring alignment reverse side, is carried out with a small reverse hammer.

A reverse hammer should be used to remove small areas; therefore, it is not suitable for straightening large-area elements such as the roof, trunk and hood lid due to small sizes and technologies of their work.

Vacuum

The value of this type of reverse action hammer lies in the presence of a vacuum suction cup, thanks to which there is no need to remove the paintwork from the car before starting repairs.

A reverse hammer with a suction cup is needed to grip metal surface body Thanks to it, there is no need to dismantle parts of the car that require repairs. The vacuum return hammer operates from compressed air, which is produced by the compressor.

For spot straightening

Some complex dents on the car body are straightened using one-sided spot welding. This device is called a spotter. The device instantly welds metal fasteners to the body in the damaged area and pulls out the deformed surface using a reverse hammer.

It is fixed to the surface that requires straightening, and the hammer itself moves in the desired direction in the form of a washer, which applies force at the point of fixation and pulls out the deformation.

An automatic spotter spends from 10 to 15 kW of energy. Care must be taken to provide wiring suitable for this load.

Mechanical

Mechanical return hammer - small hand tool for straightening a car, which consists of a rod and loosely mounted weights with the same or different masses.

On one side of the reverse hammer there is a hook, on the other there is a lock washer, which prevents the weights from falling from the rod, thereby transferring the impact force to the surface requiring alignment.

When using a reverse hammer, you need to be careful, since in the middle of the body, often when leveling out one dent, a new defect can form. Therefore, in such areas it is better to use more professional equipment.

For internal and external bearings

You can remove the inner and outer bearings using a special reverse hammer. This tool performs work that requires effort from the inside.

There are also CV joint pullers with a reverse hammer, which are designed for removing constant velocity joints from vehicle drives. At the end of the puller there is a tubular nut that must be screwed onto the CV joint threads and pulled out of the drive with a reverse hammer.

How to choose

To straighten a car body, you need to choose the right hammer.

When choosing a reverse hammer, you need to pay attention to:

  • maximum effort;
  • structural strength;
  • life time;
  • model.

When buying a reverse hammer, it is not at all necessary to pay attention to its color. The operation of this tool does not depend on this.

Before you start repairing and straightening a car with your own hands, you need to acquire all the right tools. If you have neither the time nor the desire, you can simply drive your favorite car to a service station.

One of the most successful tools for body repair is a reverse hammer. The reverse hammer is successfully used during the repair of thresholds, arches, pillars, where there is no access from inside. The design of the reverse hammer is very simple; the base is a steel rod with a diameter of 20 mm. and 500 mm long, a weight (bushing) is put on it; on one side, the rod is made in the form of a hook, and on the other, a washer is welded so that the bushing does not fly out, and the impact force of the return hammer is transferred to the rod.

Principle of operation; Before starting work, you must familiarize yourself with the repair area of the car body; the areas to be pulled out should be cleaned down to metal and repair washers should be welded. Next, use the hook of a reverse hammer to cling to the washer and pull out the dent with light blows, repeat this operation until the dent is completely removed. To remove oblong dents and edges, a metal rod is welded through the holes by inserting several washers.

Important: Under no circumstances should you use a reverse hammer to repair large areas of the body, these are the central parts of the roof, hood and trunk lid, since as a result of welding the washers, the metal can be greatly pulled out, the result will be a disastrous part in a landfill. There are also reverse hammers with two or three weights, which allows you to adjust the impact force.

DIY reverse hammer

To make a reverse hammer, you will need a steel or stainless steel rod with a diameter of 20 millimeters and a length of 500 millimeters, a steel weight (bushing), an ebonite handle and a hook. You can make your own hook from sheet metal 4 mm thick. It should be noted that to make a vacuum reverse hammer, instead of a hook you will have to use a plunger suction cup, no matter how funny it sounds.

Important: All parts of the reverse hammer must be filed and all burrs and serrations removed. Don't forget the reverse hammer hand tool, Make it so that it is pleasant to hold in your hands

Vacuum return hammer

For body repairs without painting, vacuum reverse hammers are used, since they do not disturb the external paint of the car body. In addition, they can be used when repairing large areas of the body.

Many motorists restore the car body with their own hands. When performing this work, to eliminate defects, it is necessary to use special tools, including a reverse hammer. This device can be purchased, but if body repairs are performed infrequently, then it will be much more profitable to design the tool yourself.

What is a reverse hammer

A body repair hammer is a tool designed to remove dents from the surface of a car. As a rule, these defects cannot be corrected with conventional tools, so a reverse hammer is often used for arches and racks vehicle. The instrument has a classic design and is a pin 50 centimeters long. The diameter of the steel rod is two centimeters. It contains two elements: a rubber bushing on one side, and a metal washer on the other. It holds the hammer in a stable position and protects the tool body from vibrations resulting from striking.

The tool is used for straightening small-area damage.

The device for straightening defects is equipped with additional clamps and metal hooks, with the help of which the staples welded to the car body are grabbed during the straightening process.

Kinds

The use of a reverse hammer largely depends on the location and complexity of the defect. There are several types of tools:

  1. Tool with pneumatic mechanism.
  2. Spotter.
  3. Vacuum hammers.
  4. With adhesive pads.

For spot-pointing a new car, it is recommended to use vacuum hammers. The way it works is as follows: using a suction cup, the tool is attached to the area to be restored, then the handle is pulled “towards you”, and as a result, due to air compression, the dent is leveled. The operating principle of this type of device allows you to eliminate defects without damaging paint coating car body.

The use of pneumatic tools is necessary to repair serious damage. The hammer is connected to powerful compressor, as a result, the mechanical impact on the damaged area increases. The device is attached to the car body using special hooks. Before using the device, if necessary, remove the paintwork from the damaged area.

A spotter is a welding machine that is used to weld additional element. This can be an iron rod or a special hook. Next, use a reverse hammer to cling to the protruding part and level the damaged area.

Before welding the part, the area to be restored is thoroughly washed, the paint coating is removed and degreased.

Tools with adhesive pads are attached without using welding machine. Reliable fastening is ensured by a special adhesive composition; after eliminating the defect, the overlay is cut off and the damaged paintwork is restored.

The purpose of using a hammer is to smooth out dents. However, it can be used to dismantle some spare parts. So, to remove internal bearings, use a tool that has a special pin in its design.

Self-production

The finished tool is not cheap, so in order to save money, many motorists construct the device with their own hands. For self-creation required:

  • Metal steel rod (or pipe) 50 cm long and 2 cm thick.
  • Rubber or ebonite handle.
  • Hook out of stainless steel, having a thickness of 4-5 mm.
  • Welding machine.
  • Two steel washers with a diameter of 2.5-3 cm.
  • A weight 6 cm thick and 16-17 cm long.

To make a reverse hammer you will need:

  1. Clean and degrease the rod using grinder polish the surface of the part.
  2. A hook is attached to one of the ends. In order not to waste time when creating threads for removable nozzles, the part is welded.
  3. A small washer is put on the pin, which needs to be welded near the base of the hook. It is used to ensure that the weight does not come into contact with the working surface.
  4. A hole with a diameter of 2.1 cm is made in the weight. Thanks to this, the part will move freely along the rod during operation. When making a tool, it is taken into account that the shape of the part must be without protrusions and corners. Round sheets of steel are welded to both ends of the element, thanks to this the palm will not jump off the weight when straightening the body.
  5. A weight is threaded from the free end. If the part moves slowly, then the diameter of the hole is increased by another half a centimeter.
  6. At the end of the work, the handle is put on, but before that another washer is installed to prevent contact between the handle and the weight when using a hammer.

Used to straighten dents on a car body. different instruments, including a reverse hammer. In many cases it is more appropriate self-production. Having spent 30-40 minutes of his time, the motorist receives a tool that is simple in design but effective.

In order to create such a reverse hammer himself, the author of this article needed very little metal. The picture shows a drawing for this particular hammer. Anyone who will do the right to create with their own sizes. After all, the main goal is to make it work!

According to the principle in such a hammer: a rod on which on one side there is a hook, a handle, a stopper, and a striker. We take the hammer in one hand, and with the other we activate the hammer by hitting the stopper. The author took a couple of small pieces of sheet metal of the same diameter, and one piece of thicker metal, two pieces of pipes, one larger in size, the other smaller in size, but a little longer than the first one and also a handle. The author does not indicate dimensions in the text; your dimensions may differ from the author's dimensions. The author's dimensions are in the picture above.

You need to make a circle out of metal, its size is equal to the diameter of the larger pipe. You need to drill a hole in it equal to the diameter of the smaller pipe. Next, a smaller pipe needs to be welded as in the picture.

Explanation from the author: first he cut a square of size, slightly larger size a larger pipe, then made a hole for a smaller pipe and welded it, and then turned it into a circle the right size. There is another option in the picture. Everyone has the right to do their own thing.

The author put a large piece of pipe on the resulting workpiece and scalded it. Next, the author made another puck, exactly the same as at the beginning.

Then he cut the pipe smaller, leaving a margin of 2-3 mm for welding. The picture shows the cutting line.

Next, he filled the void with dry sand. I put the finished second puck on top and scalded everything.

It turned out to be a striker.

At the next stage, the author took: metal for the stopper, a handle and a rod. The author cut the rod with a margin for bending for the hook.

The stopper should be made of thicker metal so that the stopper does not bend when struck by the striker. The author did not choose a thick one, but it was in the form of a staple.

The handle can be used from anything that fits (or you can just weld a small tube.)

He bent one edge of the rod with a hook, put on a striker, and put a stopper on the second edge and welded it on the side of the handle. I also welded the handle here (all welding should be on the side where the handle is, but not on the side where the striker is.) This is the hammer the author came up with.

Among the works related to body repair, the most difficult is considered to be straightening, which refers to the alignment of body parts. This is explained by the high requirements for the skills of the performer for its high-quality implementation. In addition, you will need professional tools, such as, for example, the hammers discussed in this article, including a reverse hammer for body repair.

This term refers to a metal pin 50 cm long and 2 cm in diameter, one side of which is represented by a bushing, and the other by a small steel washer that holds the bushing and protects the body from shock vibrations. Many models of reverse hammers are equipped with several hooks that are used to grab staples welded to the body.

Purpose and classification

The reverse hammer is designed to level out small dents that are not directly accessible from the back side on parts such as sills, arches and pillars.

It should be borne in mind that the tools in question are not suitable for processing large body parts, such as the roof, hood and trunk lid.

In addition, only small dents can be removed using reverse hammers. In the case, for example, of a violation of the body geometry, other repair technologies will be required.

Reverse hammers are classified into four types:

  • vacuum;
  • spotters;
  • with two and three weights;
  • with pneumatic mechanism.

The type of tool determines the technology for performing straightening work. When using reverse hammers of the last three types, it is first necessary to completely remove paint material from the surface of the body part being processed by grinding. The difference between a vacuum tool is that it is used without removing the paintwork, without damaging it or compromising its integrity.

Application

The process of straightening with your own hands using a reverse hammer is performed in the following order:

  1. First of all, you need to clean and degrease the work surface.
  2. Then the paint coating is removed from it by sanding.
  3. Round repair washers are welded onto the treated area of the body.
  4. Next, attach the supplied metal hook to the end of the reverse hammer.
  5. He is hooked to the puck and, holding the weight with one hand and the handle with the other, the first is directed towards the second with sharp movements. In this case, the surface of the body part is leveled. It must be taken into account that the force of the blows directly determines the speed of leveling.

Dents lead to the formation of internal compressive and tensile stresses, which can change unpredictably during straightening. For its successful implementation, it is very important to determine the nature of the defect. For example, when removing a dent located in the central part of a body part by pulling, new defects may form.

Therefore, during the straightening process, it is necessary to control changes in the dent being corrected and, in order to avoid the formation of new defects, carry out it from the edges to the middle of the defect in a circle.

If the work is done correctly, the surface will return to its original shape and the deformation stress will be eliminated.

Self-production

Reverse hammers can be purchased separately or in special tool kits for body repair. In addition, this tool can be made by hand. To do this you will need the following materials:

  • steel pin with a diameter of 2 cm, a length of 50 cm (you can use a smaller diameter option, but in this case the service life of the tool will be shorter);
  • handle made of ebonite or rubber (an ordinary nozzle will do);
  • welding machine;
  • stainless steel hook 4-5 mm thick;
  • weight 16-17 cm long, 6 cm thick;
  • two steel washers with a diameter of 2.5-3 mm.

The metal pin must be cleaned, if necessary, given a smooth surface by grinding, and degreased. A hook must be attached to one end of the pin. This can be done in two ways: by welding or by creating a thread and screwing it onto it. Welding a hook is much faster, however, having created a thread, you can later use various nozzles. Then you need to put the washer on top, screwing or welding it near the base of the hook. This will prevent the weight from moving towards the surface being processed during the straightening process.

A hole is made in the weight with a diameter 0.1 cm larger than the diameter of the pin to ensure the possibility of its free movement during operation, and it is put on from the free end of the pin. If the stroke is tight, the diameter of the hole in the weight is increased by another 0.5 cm. The weight itself should not have corners or protrusions, since in this case its movement during operation will be difficult. To ensure maximum grip comfort, round steel sheets should first be welded to both ends of the weight so that the hand does not slip off it. Another washer is put on top of the weight and fixed, which is necessary to prevent the weight from moving close to the handle during operation. Finally, the handle is put on and secured.

As you can see, the work of making a reverse hammer is quite simple to do with your own hands. The whole process takes 30-40 minutes.

Other straightening hammers

In addition to the reverse hammer, there are some other types of hammers designed for body repair, such as a pick and a shrink hammer. However, all models of straightening tools of this type have some common features.

The strikers of such hammers consist of rubber or some other elastic material. This is necessary to ensure a soft impact of the hammer on the surface being processed during the straightening process. Thanks to this, defects are eliminated without causing new damage to the material. Straightening versions of tools are equipped with handles that widen towards the end, often with rubber linings. They provide a comfortable grip, securely hold the tool and prevent it from slipping out of your hand.

Many straightening tools provide the ability to change attachments from various materials included in the kit, due to the presence of threads on the handle.

How to make a return hammer with your own hands

For processing cars, a reverse hammer is used to repair the body. This design allows you to draw body cavities with your car before picking up the car.

In addition to the information, this material provides photographs of the reversible hammer assembly, which independently allows them to be welded. Please note that this hammer is designed for handling intruders using welding, not for mammals!

To return the hammer, we need a small metal. Below is a drawing with dimensions; The diameters and lengths are for this reversible hammer.

Retractable Hammer: We respect the working principle and DIY tool

You can use your own measurements, use your own pipes - the main thing is the work!

By design it would be the other way around - a hammer stick with a hook, an attack, a stop and a handle: right hand holds the handle with his left hand, puts happiness in a linear motion, hitting the fence.

So, we need: pieces of two tubes different diameters(they can be called small and large pipes), and the small pipe is taken slightly longer than the large one; a piece of sticks; a pair of iron glands made of iron and one made of iron is thicker and still a handle.

Diameters and lengths are not shown in the text, they may be your own judgment and mine, see the above picture.

Cut the plate with a round trunnion of the same diameter as the diameter of the large tube (diameter shown in the red circle in the picture above).

Cut a piece of iron with a diameter larger than the diameter of the small tube. We weld a small tube (picture above). comment: The first time I cut a square, drilled a hole, welded a tube, then dug a circle out of the square, Bulgarian cut for the red circle.

And you can immediately cut the circle, drill and weld as you wish (another shape starts to work in the picture below).

What we have, we place in a large tube and boil in a circle (in the picture above and below, shown from different sides).

Create another nickname, just like at the beginning.

I did it: cut it large area, drilled a hole, placed it on a small tube (see picture above), marked the diameter with a large tubular line and interrupted it with a Bulgarian. What happened in the photo below.

Cut a small hose, reserving a few millimeters for welding, approximately at the cutting line in the picture below.

We fill the tube with sand.

The sand is dry. So we punish him: we just knock on the floor, sand "Sit down", add sand and plunger again.

Sand the sand on top and cover with a penny (picture above). Enter everything from the inside diameter to the small tube and the outside diameter to the large one.

This happened (picture below), this is a fighter.

At this stage of making the return hammer, we need a stick, a piece of iron for stopping and handles (picture below).

Bar. When cutting the rod, be sure to leave a hook.

Emphasis.

It can be made from pieces of flat iron, such as 4 mm. The emphasis should be the punch, not the bend. Note: I caught a piece of iron 2mm thick, which is not very thick, but in the form of a staple (see blue below).

Pen. Maybe from scratch.

From old patients, from old kitchen utensils. In extreme cases, you can even weld a piece of the same small tube together.

We hook the hook from the sticks. Let's go into the barrel on a stick. The other end of the stick is inserted into the hole of the station and braked from the rear (picture above). Then place the handle and also squeeze it on the same side.

Thus, all welding is done using the hammer handle, but not the striker.

It so happens, the Reverse Hammer is prepared by hand.

You can buy cheap seals with a large diameter for the job and weld them. Here in the picture below, pull out the center stand: the welding washers and the back hammer will level the body element.

Due to the accident, the car is not insured against various injuries.

With some of them, if you have the necessary knowledge and experience, you can manage it yourself. Sometimes, however, experts cannot do without qualified experts.

Coordination of the invasion of expert cars should be carried out quite often, so a return hammer for body repairs in every car repair shop.

Where is it used, how is it used?

A reverse hammer is one of the most important tools for car body restoration. It is used when there is no direct access from the inside to compensate for small cavities.

The construction of such a device is extremely simple and does not require special skills to repair the body.

The main disadvantages of this tool are:

  • Before starting work, the damaged metal surface should be thoroughly cleaned;
  • It cannot be used for a relatively large area of the car body (the central part of the roof, luggage compartment and lid) because welding the washers can pull the metal a lot and the end result will be very unfortunate.

applications:

  • arch repair,
  • restoring sills, pillars and other body elements.

Device design

The base of the device is a steel rod with a diameter of 20 mm and a length of 500 mm.

On the bar, on one side it is placed on a dumbbell, and on the other, the washer is welded. Washing machine necessary to prevent the plug from leaving the base, and impact force was not transferred to the stick. A special tool is often available with the tool. Caught buckles welded to the body. To remove extended edges and recesses, a series of washers are welded to the surface and push a metal rod through the holes.

The operating principle of this device is simple, but requires some knowledge of the basic device:

  • firstly, a thorough examination of the damaged area of the body;
  • those areas where they are stretched must be cleaned down to the metal and welding washers;
  • the hook is then attached to a washer attached to the body of the machine and lightly removes the dent;
  • The previous operation is repeated until the body is completely aligned.

Bring back the vacuum hammer

One of the most popular and frequently used varieties of this device are vacuum return hammers.

It is actively used if the car is not planned in the future. Its main advantage is that it can be used to repair even large areas of the body. The weight of the tool is about 1 kg, so working with it will not require much effort.

During the treatment process, to properly grip the metal, you do not need to drill even the smallest holes into an existing dent, as standard auto body repair technology does.

Design and use of hammers, DIY tool making

The vacuum device can handle bits of any configuration, size and shape. The vacuum cleaner holds the material firmly when the dent is lost.

Its use reduces costs labor in size and significantly reduces operating time.

Stages of body restoration using vacuum modification of the device:

  • thorough degreasing and heating of the vehicle surface at the site of damage;
  • gluing two special adhesive lines along the edges and center of the dent;
  • clean the piston clamp and act on the fracture zone using vacuum hammers (here it is necessary to control the rise of the concave metal);
  • repeat the previous two steps until the damage becomes invisible;
  • careful improvement of the minilater and hooks on the body surface.

How to make a reverse hammer with your own hands and how to use it. Press!

The reverse hammer is necessary tool, with which you can fix dents in hard-to-reach places on the car body. These are parts of the car where it is impossible to squeeze out a dent from the back side.

These mainly include the arches, sills and pillars of the car.

Such equipment is used for minor damage to a specific area, which does not require replacement of the entire fragment.

This tool does not represent complex equipment and is not large in size. It is the reverse hammer that will be discussed in this article.

What kind of device is this

If you are at least a little familiar with plumbing, then creating such a tool at home will be quite simple for you.

Making such a device yourself will not take much time, and will not even require special equipment or knowledge.

For a more visual understanding, we present a primitive drawing that will not be superfluous.

As noted above, the design of such a hammer is very simple. A metal sleeve is mounted on a steel rod 50 cm long with a diameter of 10 to 20 mm, which should be easy to grip by hand.

The diameter of its hole should allow it to slide freely along the hammer rod without creating a large backlash.

A handle is installed on the top to hold the tool by hand.

A reverse hammer is indispensable for straightening

An impact washer is tightly attached to the rod in front of the handle.

You might find this article useful on how to make a workbench with your own hands.

You can find out how to choose a screwdriver here.

And this article will tell you how to choose the right electric spray gun.

Another safety washer is attached at the bottom, which prevents the bushing from flying off the rod during operation, thereby causing additional damage to the leveled surface.

And at the very tip of the tool there should be a hook for grabbing staples.

If you decide to make such a hammer yourself, rather than buy it in a store, where the price will be much higher, then it is advisable that the hook and bottom washer be removable. Because for convenience when working, it is better to have a set of hooks of different lengths, as well as several bushings of different weights.

How to use

The operating principle of the reverse hammer is as follows:

  1. First of all, you should inspect the damaged area of the car, select the appropriate hook based on the location and main dimensions of the dent, in order to then correctly calculate the accuracy of the applied force.
  2. Then the repaired area of the body surface must be thoroughly cleaned from excess paint layer and primer down to the metal.
  3. Next, you need to weld special repair brackets (washers) onto the metal surface of the dent using a welding machine.

    If the electric spotter comes complete with a reverse hammer, then during the leveling process you only need to change the nozzle.

  4. Then you need to hook the hook of the auto tool onto the brackets, and then begin to pull out the dent with gentle and light blows.
  5. It is recommended to perform leveling until the damaged part of the body surface is completely eliminated.
  6. To get rid of dents on your car, you first need to weld some brackets and push a hammer through their holes to remove the damage.
  7. After which the corrected surface defect should be treated with a primer and re-coated with paint to match the body.

Good to know: body work reverse hammer is one of the essential tools, designed to remove irregularities in hard-to-reach areas of the car.

However, it is worth paying attention to the fact that such a device has its drawbacks, due to which, along with the dent on the car body, a layer of paint that was not even damaged is completely removed. In addition, areas of extensive dents in the hood, roof and surface of the trunk of a car cannot be straightened with its help. Welding staples can greatly deform the metal, which will ultimately lead to a complete replacement of the part.

Vacuum device

I would like to add special kind The described device is a vacuum return hammer.

It is interesting to know that vacuum body straightening has characteristic feature, which makes it possible to repair a considerable area of the damaged surface of the car.

The advantage of such a reverse hammer is the vacuum suction cup, with the help of which you will not need to remove the thickness of the paintwork from the car before starting body repairs. When working with a reverse vacuum hammer, there is no need to drill or weld brackets onto the area of the body to be leveled.

IN in this case Pistons of any shape and configuration are used.

Using a vacuum suction cup, the material is held firmly while leveling out the dent. Working with such a tool reduces labor costs and production time.

You might be interested in an article on how to make a pipe bender yourself.

And you can read about what a grinder is here.

Restoring the body using vacuum straightening occurs in several stages:

  1. Cleaning the surface from grease and warming up the area for leveling.
  2. Two specially selected glue pins are glued in the center and along the edges of the dent.
